It seems only a small percentage of folks I know are even aware of this, but a short time back I published a short story novel. I titled it Unending Expansions, and have it up for sale via the Self Publishing site, Lulu.

You can see it & buy it here:
[link]

Oh and yes, it is a mature rated book.

I wrote a bunch of new material just for this book, and have not hosted the digital copies anywhere before. ^^ Its not getting much attention however. Largely because this really is a niche market, and I can't exactly count on huge droves of people reading my journal to buy a book.

So yeah, I'm a self-published author. ^^ Hooray! Go get the book if you'd like. Its full of all sorts of fun expansive goodness. Plus other things, like actual stories!

Requests. Ah, such a fun topic to get into. There are two definitive camps in this particular debate, namely those who think Requests are OK, and those who do not. There are of course the polar extremes on both sides, from the incredibly hostile artist who hates everyone who even mentioned the word Request, to the rabid art whore who thinks everyone should draw for free, because they say so.

Now here comes some fun opinions from myself, as well as various little observations I've made over the years.

You know what kiddies? Time is valuable. Even leaving the sometimes flawed idea of “Time is Money: out of the statement, time still has a value. Time spent drawing for somebody is time you could spend working at your job, or playing a video game, or hanging out with your friends doing one thing or another. With all things, you need to look at the sacrifice being made for the activity in question, and how better you could be using the time for other things. Yes it may be “nice” for us artistic folks to open up the floodgates for people whom want something for nothing, but we usually have better things to be doing. Or at least, more pressing matters.

In my case at least, I work for a living. When I'm not at work, like I am now, I'm in school furthering my education. Then comes homework and course projects, obligations for other things here in reality, housework, errands, feeding myself, managing my money and other such things, etc. All of this takes time, and usually leaves only a few hours in the day to truly enjoy myself. During these periods I usually want to amuse myself in one way or another, from chatting online, to playing games, and occasionally even working on some of my creative ventures.

I've already written a book of short stories, and I have a more serious novel attempt on the go. All of this takes up quite a lot of time when I work on it. When I have the time, I also enjoy drawing. Now what do you all think would be higher on my list? Drawing for friends whom have frequently drawn me, or drawing for some faceless person I've never met before whom thinks I should stop what I'm doing and draw them? Not to mention all the art I do as trades, or commission work. The latter of course takes priority, seeing as I'm being paid for my time.

Here's a wacky idea for those of you among the rabid requesting circles to mull over. You are not ENTITLED to anything for free. This is not some perfect lotus eating world where everyone gets whatever they want without having to put out any effort. I'm not saying that everything needs to break down into some kind of business potential, but come on. You can't expect people you don't even know to just shit out a bunch of art for you, only to have you demand more or just go to the next artist and do the same.

Do you have any idea how many people have just stormed up to me out of the blue, and demanded I draw them a series of pictures? Or a comic? Or write them a fucking novel with illustrations? Sure they're the extreme, but the vast majority of people with requests on the brain have started conversations with me for the express purpose of getting art out of the deal. And trust me, that doesn't fly with anyone. At least, nobody with a backbone thicker than your average toothpick.

So! What can be done about all this? You people want art, and nobody wants to just give it to you. Well here's a wacky idea, pick up a pencil and start drawing for yourself! I know what you're saying, “But Tombfyre, I SUCK at art! Nobody loves me! I'm going to cut myself now...” To that, I say bullshit. If you bother to put the time and effort into it, you can at least start sketching up some passable material. I will admit there are the odd individuals out there that couldn't draw to save their life, but they're the exception to the rule rather than the rule itself.

You want to know how I got my start? Somewhere in my early 20's I realized that just writing sub-par literature wasn't going to cut it if I wanted to get more attention in our wonderful little furry world. To top it all off, various friends of mine encouraged me to start drawing. I realized quickly that all I knew how to do was stick figures doing various lewd things. So I looked at a few how-to-draw guides on the internet, and got started. Most of it was pretty shitty, and done with a mouse in MS paint for the first 1-2 years of my artistic career.

Then I switched to paper, and things just took off from there. I'm still only a moderately good artist in the grand scheme of things, at least in comparison to some of our art gods out there. But as you can see, somebody with zero drawing talent can WORK his way up to being a decent artist. Its taken 7 years to get where I am now, so this kind of shit doesn't happen overnight. But if you're willing to put in the effort, and make friendships along the way, who knows what might happen. D...

Apparently some folks out there just don't seem to understand that I'm not an artwork machine for them to abuse, nor take over in any way. I don't take requests, and have not done so for years. Some may not know this, or just have no decency in them not to demand things from every artist they see.

Lately I've been getting everything from shouts, to notes, to comments on my art basically telling me to drop what I'm doing and start drawing comics/art/series featuring X theme and Y characters. I keep telling these people to bugger off, but a few of them just wait a few weeks and come up with another insane request. I'm not sure if some of them just don't understand what the hell I'm saying, or if they have no idea why I wouldn't just bend over and give them what they want.

So yeah, a reminder. I don't bloody take requests. I draw what I want, and when I want to. I'll likely draw friends I know most often, and I might even consider requests from them. But we bounce art off each-other all the time.

And no, that doesn't mean you can grab your crayons, vomit colors all over some paper, and suddenly I owe you art. People have already tried that before with me, and it doesn't float.

/rant

*edit*

And just sending the same request a few hours later after I've already told you no won't get you a different reply. This means you, Inflationartfan. Go away.

Well I've started going through the ass-end of my gallery, and removing a lot of old deviations. They're some of my first works done via mouse in MS paint, back in 2004 and earlier. DA doesn't even seem to have the files themselves anymore, just broken thumbnails. ^^()

So, all the MS paint goodies are now gone. Next I'll probably be moving a lot of older hand-drawn stuff either to scraps, or getting rid of them as well. Yay for cleaning up old crap!

And once again, the collection system is bothering me. Its bad enough that people are show-casing other peoples work, but now some of my deviations are being added to collections such as "The worst shit I've ever seen." ...
((Yoinked from Two-Ton neko. ))

1. Draw a bunch of fan pictures of really popular series such as Naruto, Dragon Ball Z or any other series that there are way too many gullible fans for.

2. Find a bunch of artists or people on dA that draw or fav the heck out of those kinds of pics and comment on their pages by either complimenting their works and/or asking them to look at your own created fan works.

3. Post up journals about the latest of every pirated release of the series you draw fan fics for obsessively. Not only will it have people look at your journal but actualy take their time to read whatever crap you have in your journal. Note: Make sure you make it a point to call anything original you have to say or create crap. You will know if this is successful if people either downright agree or try to argue that your ideas actually matter to them when they really don't.

4. In following to the above step, you need to watch out for two-faced commenters who are also following this plan to get popular. You need to avoid looking at their page through the link in their comments so they don't get the faves and views you brown-nosed so hard to get.

5. Reply to everyone's comments about your works half-assed like. Thank yous and it is an awesome picture always work. Never compliment the viewers in fear of letting other viewers pay attention to them. Those are views you need to desperately horde for yourself in order to become popular.

Helpful Hints and Bonuses:
Avoid being original at all costs. Also copy popular styles and never try to create original techniques. That is looked down upon by the general public. Or worse, ignored. Don't waste your time trying to be original because of this.

When you've got a lot of attention and started your own private fan base start up contests with your art work as the prize. Use one of your unsubmitted works in replacement of the prize. It would most likely match the description of what the winner wants since this will save you time for drawing your next fan pictures. Fans always ask for the same monotinous thing.

Follow these steps and you too can be popular. And remember, NEVER be original!

Well, as most of you know, I'm still quite blocked up on the artwork front. I've tried sketching quite a few times over the last little while, but they just don't go anywhere. I can't make up my mind what I want to do, and I get disappointed with whatever it is I'm doing really quite fast. I've got ideas, I just have no idea what I'm doing anymore. Hell, I think I'm actually slipping into worse quality than before.

All in all, this is proving to be rather annoying. Whenever I'm not doing something creative for long periods of time, I start to get moody, perhaps even lightly depressed. Seems to be a normal reaction from those whom write or draw, and fail to do so for a certain period of time. Either way, it ain't any fun.

I turn it on, it starts booting, then it turns off again, but the power light is still on. If I turn it off and on a few times, it will just get into a loop of automatic resets, or it will do nothing.

I already took it appart to see if loose cables was the problem, and it worked again for about an hour. Now, I can't get it to do a damn thing other than whats listed above. Woo... I've suspected the mobo and power supply was crapping out for a while now. Sometimes it took several pressings o' the power button to get it going, but I doubt its a faulty switch.
I must say, dispite being a rated "G" movie, it certainly had mature content. ^^() Lots and lots of death and whatnot. Still, I found it a very amusing movie, rather delightful, and full of all sorts of neat and spiritual things.

As most of you probably know, its full of Tanuki, so of course there is a lot of interesting and odd happenings. But it was all good, and spoke out a tad about the encroachment of people on wildlife. Now I'm one step closer to owning all the Studio Ghibli movies out on the market. ^^

As some of you have probably heard me complain before, there are certain folks out there who bother me for various reasons. Those who tend to annoy me the most, are those whom see artists as a chunk of meat, who exists for the sole purpose of making them artwork.

Now, one of these people has been bothering me since the dawn of time it seems. Way back when I was still getting started as an artist, he came out of nowhere with requests/demands of free artwork, adult roleplaying conversations, free stories, you name it. As is quite usual for me, I said no. But he persisted, bothering me agian and again anyways, dispite being asked not to. Eventually I blocked him, so he paged me via other means, and messengers, and e-mail adresses. When those were all blocked, he began a long process of trying to get other people to talk to me on his behalf, or get himself invited into group conversations...

Well, this stepped up again recently, and said person has even gone to the trouble of hunting me down on Second Life, bitching that he's blocked on all the chat programs and e-mail. And now he wants a custom avatar there (for the second time), and even tried to "purchase" artwork from me with in-game currency.

What I'm trying to wrap me head around, is weather or not this is some kind of freaky Persistence and over-stereotypical fan-boy behavior, or flat our Harassment. Frankly, I'm getting sick of this all over again. He certainly doesn't take no for an answer, and he's not the only one either.

So very annoying in any case. I figure if this keeps up, I'm simply going to report him via SL as a start, and go from there.

And what made it even better, was I got to see it on the local IMAX screen. Nothing quite like an enveloping view and uber surround-sound to make a movie even better.

I found it amusing how they kinda tied the movie to be a prequil to the first batman film, but changed things around a tad as well. Either way, continuity errors asside, it was really quite slick. I want some of the military gear they had in that warehouse. ^^

I just got back home from seeing War of the Worlds. I have to say, I was impressed with the film as a whole. Probably could have used a better actor than Cruise, but oh well, we can’t win ‘em all. There was quite a lot of eye-candy there, though they got the ships wrong I figure. ^^() Damn creepy scenes, seeing people just vaped into dust by the laser thingies however.

While I was at the mall, before seeing the movie, I noticed there were far more punk assed gang-members there than usual. After the movie, there were even more. There were tons at the bus-stop too, and on the bus itself. Hell, there were even Ebonics-spewing individuals swinging around metal baseball bats to accompany me on the final little walk home. I’ve come to the conclusion that this city has gone to hell.

I was being told today that Edmonton has been named the murder capitol of Canada. Hmm, I wonder why… Could it be because we have next to no police force? Could it be because the police force blatantly advertises this lack in the newspapers, crying for people to join? Could it be because the damn city turns away the RCMP, for some unknown reason?

Well whatever it is, it’s getting to a point where I’m considering carrying a knife again in public. Sure it’s illegal to defend yourself, but frankly I don’t give a damn anymore. If some fucking ex-con wants to take a swing at me with a baseball bat, and try to take my wallet, I’ll tear his goddamn head off

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with people these days? Most of these sons of bitches aren’t street people, they have no reason to act this way, but they choose to anyways. And if we the citizen dare lay a finger on them, we’ll most likely go to jail for assault and battery, if not intent to kill or some other bullshit. I say let us have as many weapons as the criminals do, and see how quickly crime decreases.

I figure if every gun/knife toting teenager and lowlife knew damn fine that anyone they’re trying to mug was armed to the teeth, they’d think twice. Hell, even if they shot first and then robbed the corpse, there would be thousands of other people all around that were just as armed, and would put the asshat down for good at that point. But no, we’re not allowed to think that way. Gotta be all nice and tolerant to everyone else… Maybe if we stick our heads in the sand, they’ll go away.

On a happier note, I seem to have been offered a job in the mall, at the army supply store. Angry dragon surrounded by flak jackets and sharp objects… Why do I see an arrest warrant in the near future?
