It has been the better part of a year since there have been any new additions to this site from Terragen; either the "old" version or from TG2. I almost have to relearn the thing! I hope to gradually get some more renders up here in the coming months. Then, next month, I will be going on another long monastic retreat. Yes, I am getting more into that all of the time, and it is just possible that I may take a vocation to the order that I belong to and in which I have been an oblate for nearly four years. In other words, I would become a monk. This is nothing new with me, as I have had this urge to that way of life for some years now, but if it is to become a reality, now is the time because I will soon be too old to enter an order. Anyway, that is where we are at this time. Sorry for the long absence.

I love the ability to add moons, multiple suns, and different levels of volumetric clouds in TG2, but the render time for anything of decent quality "resolution" is far too long. It takes hours. I can do a good high quality render in Terragen 0.9 in usually under two hours, but one of the same quality in TG2 would take a couple of days or more! So with that I am using it sparingly these days and still doing most renders with the old version. Maybe the final release of TG2 will be more efficient in CPU usage and such and the render times will be less, but I don't know right now. We will see what we will see.

I have been playing around with TG2 for a few weeks now, but there is still so much to learn. I like the ability to add moons and planets to the scene in addition to the volumetric cloud layers. All of the clouds in Terragen 0.9 are stratiform and only one layer, though they can still be used to get amazing effects.

I continue to use Terragen 0.9 for renders as well and will continue doing so. It is still capable of producing beautiful scenes, and that is the bottom line is for me. Each application works well depending on the goal. So, renders from both will continue to be seen here. Enjoy.

I am finally getting into TG2. I have printed out many of the tuts and have been pouring over them. There are many tests that I want try as time permits. Next I want to get a planet (moon) into the sky on one of the next renders. Then I want to play around with some of the shaders to make some strange looking terrains. But, slowly, I am getting there. All in all, it is a very cool program. I especially like the volumetric clouds and the way that it renders cumulus clouds. It is nice to be able to do several layers of clouds as it certainly more natural. It is also nice to be able to do fog in the valleys without sacrificing a pleasing level of haze in the atmosphere. The next time I do fog though, I want to increase the edge sharpness a bit. Also, I need to try something with the mountains poking into the clouds. Much to learn and much to try in this new fangled thing. I am still using the unregistered version, but I am about to upgrade to the registered version so that I can do larger image sizes. Now, all I really need is TIME!

I played with TG2 for a while last Saturday. Tried to make a (what I thought) was a simple cloudscape with cumulus, alto cumulus and some cirrus and some lighting effects. What I cam out with was a mess! At least with Terragen I can see what I am doing on the little postage stamp quick render at the upper left. Also, my aging computer is not quite up to the task of the new application. So, sorry to say this, but I am not impressed with TG2! I am sticking with the old version for a while as I am still learning the various tweaks and tricks of the program. One can still make some amazing terrains with Terragen 0.9 and so, even though I might be left behind for a short while, I will continue to use Terragen 0.9.

OK, now that I have had my rant, I know I am being too critical. What I will do is to wait for the final release of TG2 and then make the jump and learn it better. By then also, there should be better documentation and helps. The Tech Preview is just that. It is high-end version for high-end users. The final version should be more "polished" and have a better GUI. In the end, I might eventually migrate to Vue, but will not be until I get good enough to start selling prints and making a little side money off of this effort. Vue is expensive! So, all ranting aside, until the final version of TG2 is released, I will do Terragen 0.9 renders here and hope to get better at this. Thanks again for reading.

I finally downloaded and installed TG2 this past weekend (Jan 20, 2007) along with the PDF overview file. I wish that I had more time to devote to this stuff, but since I do have a "day job" I only have some time on the weekends to play with Terragen and produce one or two digital terrains. I only discovered Terragen about six or seven months ago and now that TG2 Tech Preview is out, it will take me some time to really learn to use it.

Last year I decided that I wanted to do some kind of computer art and thought that I was going to make space scapes. Well, when I found out about Terragen and digital terrains, that all changed. Once I got Terragen and began to learn how to use it, I thought that this is way too cool and dropped the space scape idea. The gist of this is that I will get to TG2, but it will be a while. There are some good tuts that I have found and I want to get into it. But the time is the factor. I use sophisticated software in my work and all sophisticated software takes time to learn, but at work, I have each day all day to learn a new software, not just on weekends!

Anyway, thank you for visiting my site.

I want to better master this version first before even attempting the more advanced TG2 application. So, don't plan on seeing TG2 work hear yet. For me, there is so very much that can be done using Terragen 0.9 that I have yet to explore. Therefore, my plans for this new year are to continue to learn the various tools in Terragen 0.9 and create as many varied terrains as I can and share them here. TG2 will wait for another time.
