In case you didn't know, I am a big fan of Chuck Palahniuk, and had never gotten the opportunity to go to one of his readings. Well yesterday I finally was able to go!!! It was awesome, although I had already known about the blow up doll contest, and how the sighing was going to be held, it was still a lot of fun. We arrived sometime around 4.30 if my memory serves me correct, and there was already a line. I was extremely nervous as to whether or not I would get to be one of the first 150 to purchase a copy of snuff (his latest book). But first let me back track a bit, because you're probably wondering "why does it matter to be one of the 150?'. Well, it did matter .... A Lot. Because only the first 150 people to purchase a snuff at the reading would get their books personalized. and I really wanted to get my 3 book signed by him. But because we arrived so early, I managed to snag number 65. We waited about 1 hour in the line outside, waiting to get into the lobby, then about another 30-40 min. waiting to be seated. The introduction was pretty funny, mainly because of the crowd, and one kid who sat about 3-4 rows in front of me. He made sure to respond with sly remarks, my kinda guy. Although the lights didn't dim, and music didn't play to get the crowd started, when chuck peaked out from behind the curtain, everyone shouted with excitement, even my grandmother. Oh yeah, did I mentioned I had gone with my grandmother Ana? Well yep, I did. Because she speaks mainly Spanish, I spoke to her in Spanish the entire time, at one point I noticed the two ladies sitting next to me debating as to whether or not they should ask my name. The brunette who didn't want to ask countered her blonde pal by saying "I don't think she speaks English". Ha ha. that's pretty much all I could think.
but enough about speaking English, and exciting crowds, back to the reading! - He started out the evening by telling a story about his friends and their cat, followed by a new short story he wrote 'Loser" which was great. I don't want to give any details on them, in case someone reading this is planning on going to his next reading, or wants to watch it on youtube, which you can by the way, there was then a short interview, and afterward audience questions. At the end of the audience questions, there was a second round of blowing up the, well, blow up dolls. followed by throwing of the autograph hounds. (all of which you can catch on youtube)
Finally it was time to get out books signed. Ana, my grandmother, waited with me, for about another hour or so. We were in line with the same group of kids when we were waiting outside. When I reached the front of the line, chuck very gladly sighed all of my books, and I mentioned to him how I missed him during the Haunted tour, and how disappointed I was about that, in my copy of Haunted he wrote "Sorry I missed you in Miami", he asked if I was just visiting GA to go to his reading, and I told him, that no, we moved up here about a year ago, and he accordingly wrote in rant " Welcome to Atlanta!". ha ha. (I'll try and post pics of my books later one, as soon as my scanner is willing to work with me). I told him I was there with my grandmother, and that is was her first reading ever, he apologized saying he was so sorry it had to be his, but I let him know my grandmother enjoyed it very much. He then asked me to go and wait around the curtain, and he wanted to speak to my grandmother. I left, he spoke to her, gave her something, and then called me back for a picture. I haven't an idea what he gave her, he told her to make sure not to tell me. I guess I'll find out sooner or later. Actually when he asked me to leave, one of the young guys I was waiting in line with, I think his number was 62, asked me what was going on, I told him I had no idea, but we'll all find out once I got back. At least I thought we would, sorry blondish guy with number 62 ( I think?), but we all didn't din out, I still haven't found out.
I'm going to post pictures of my books (as mentioned before), and pics I took from my seat. I must warn you though, they aren't the best pictures, so bare with me.

Bye for now,
Dominique

And PS. Thank to Joe, for taking my picture with Chuck, when my battery died, and sending it to me.

I first have to say that I have had a blast featuring some of my favorite artists here on DA, and can't wait to do it again. It's been extremely hard to pick these 10, and having to pick just four of their pieces to feature, although you may have noticed that I have bent that rule, just a smidgen'. But now, for my last feature, I thought I should end it with one of my most favorite artist on here. His work is beyond outstanding, his detail is mind boggling, and I can only hope that I will someday be as good as him. And I absolutely love his work with hair, and that is why I have given him the title of KING of HAIR! I'm sure that many of you have come across the work of ~aramismarron , but if you haven't please check his gallery out. When I first saw his page I was in aww. I love that he puts so much detail in his work, and you still get the feeling that, yes this is a drawing, not a photograph, something that not a lot of artist are able to achieve when working with graphite. It was defiantly pretty difficult for me to pick out just four of his pieces to show on here, but I hope you enjoy the ones that I picked. and here they are:

FEATURE 9!, First I must apologize for my tardiness. I've been kinda distracted with the holiday season, but here it goes, Feature # 9! I am extremely thrilled to feature *EvilxElf Like my last feature, this is a photography feat. I love Evil's use of color in the photos, as well as they way she zooms into the subjects. Every photo is so unique, and I love that she takes photos of the same group of people, but it doesn't feel like a repetition every time, like some other photographers do. Like I've said before, I'm not a photographer, and admire them all. Photography has to be one of the most interesting mediums to use, and I love finding new photographers, and their amazing work. I defiantly felt like that when I first found *EvilxElf So here are my favorite picks, please enjoy them, and add/ fave them, you won't be disappointed!

Ok, so time for feature numero 8! This week I'm going with something a bit different, not a painter or pencil art, but photography. I love photography, I'm not very good at taking pictures, and have a huge admiration for those who are able to photograph so well, and make it seem so effortless. Today I'm featuring *lithp , I love his work, his close up photographs make you feel like you're right there, next to the person. I can honestly say that I've never really felt much emotion when looking at photographs (with the exception of my family album of course), but while going through his gallery the first time, I got a sense of happiness and warmth while browsing the gallery. His photographs of his little girl are beautiful, and you can see the love he has for her by looking at them. I hope you all enjoy his gallery and add him, I know that while going through the gallery today to pick my favorites to feature, i added a bunch of photos that I hadn't the first time I went through. So please enjoy!
And I have to say that I am extremely happy to be featuring ~HackyScott He was one of the first artist I found and added to my dev watch when I began my DA account. To be completely honest, when I first saw one of his drawings, I didn't think much of it because I could have sworn it was a picture, and after enlarging it I realized that yes it was a drawing. The detail he puts in his work is beyond me. I can't imagine how much patience it must take to do his work. I think his work is extremely extremely (yes he deserves to 'extremely's) good. Plus I love getting to see his WIP's. Just getting to see a bit of his process is great. Hope you all enjoy his work as much as I do.
And I am extremely excited to be able to feature ~IanC83 . I love his paintings, I can only wish to one day be as talented as he. The detail in "Hear No Evil See No Evil" is magnificent. His is amazing at capturing an expression, capturing the mood, feel of a subject. I personally do not know if he uses models or not, so I can't say, but if he doesn't, wow. I also like the bit of comedy in "Hover Not Included". I've seen many artist who are very good, but also have certain parts of the anatomy that they just can't work very well with (I, for example, have a big problem with lips, but I like to think I'm pretty darn good when it comes to drawing hands) Ian is great with the human anatomy, getting every detail in the joints, muscles, but still in a very subtle way. So here are my 4 favorite pieces of his gallery, plus a link to his site.

Ok so this is my third feature, and I am very happy to feature ~Eastwest89. He is an amazing artist. His use of color is wonderful, I love that his work is so realistic, but you still feel that it's a painting (an amazing painting at that), and I think that's something that a lot of artist tend to lose. His detail is incredible, and his work with shadows leaves you awe-struck. Please check out his work and add him. He is over all an an amazing artist.
Her graphite drawings are filled with so much detail, and her latest watercolor pieces are amazing, I think I have fav'd almost everyone of them. I hope you all enjoy her work. I think it's only fair to feature *Farfalla-Dea so here are my favorite 4 of her gallery. She is a great artists, and one of the nicest people I've met here on DA. Plus she is an amazing face painter (and yes it is very difficult to be a good face painter, trust me i've tried before, and it's hard). She makes it seem so easy, and what I love most about it is the details she puts into them.

YES!!! Today I was finally able to see the Louvre exhibit at the High Museum here in GA. It was... I don't know... Wonderful EXCITING AMAZING GREAT ... PERFECT!!! When you are standing right in from of a painting or sculpture that you know one of the masters has created, it's just a wonderful feeling. Something that I think everyone should experience at least once in there life. Knowing that Velasquez once held this canvas in his hands. That Marie Antoinette once sat in that chair, or the Louis the XVI used this writing table and so many other examples, it's an amazing feeling. We also were able to see the Annie Lebovitz (I know I most likely mis-spelled her last name, sorry). It was great to see her work, and not just her celebrity work, but also to see her family side, I truly loved that photographs of her parents. Especially the ones of her Mothers birthday in the kitchen. The High Museum is just about the wrap up this part of the Louvre exhibit, but in Oct. I believe they are going to bring in the Impressionist exhibit with pieces by Monet, Degas, and I think Manet, but not entirely sure on that one. I heard a rumor that Gustave Callibot's The Floor Scrapers would be there, but I'm not sure, If it is that would be awesome, it has to be one of my favorite panting's of all time. I highly encourage anyone who is in the Atlanta area to che che check it out (sorry, I have that song stuck in my head, and I couldn't resist.)

In other news, remember the drawing I am trying to do without any reference pieces? Well.... it's changed.... just a bit.... well a lot. Instead of having three photos of one girl, the middle photo is going to have a close up portrait of her, the one on the right is going to have a close up of a hand on a guitar, and the last one is going to have a close up of a bass, or drum, not exactly sure yet. But I will most defiantly keep you informed.

Have to get going,

WELL WE KNEWWE'D MISSED THE BOAT AND WE"D ALREADY MISSED THE PLANE

Ok, this is just a quick update as to what I've been up to drawing wise. I finished my SURS drawing (as you can see it is my latest addition to my gallery). And although I'm terribly ecstatic about the chin/jaw area, I am however very happy with the overall drawing, especially the hands and the green legs. I am now working an a three in one drawing. It's basically one large drawing with what is meant to be three Polaroid pictures within it. The three photos inside of it are a girl performing. One where she is sitting with her microphone, another that is a close up of her face, with her eyes closed, and the third is of her standing singing into her microphone. the background of all of the photos is going to be dark, and I will most likely use my softest pencils (7-9 B) and you will only see the lighter parts of her face. Where as the background of the actual illustration board is going to be done in a muted 4 B (using a woodless 4 to achieve this). The big news on this piece is..... I am not using any type of reference, none whatsoever. This is all I my head, and I am trying my best to execute it to the best of my abilities. I have never really done something* that is just from my head. I have always used reference pictures, whether my piece turns out to be an exact replica or not, reference is always involved. but my mother had mentioned to me how it had been a long time since I had done something just out of imagination. I think the last I did this I must have been a painting of a ballerina sitting on a flower that I gifted to my cousin. So far I must say though, that I am very happy with how it is turning out, I am defiantly taking my time with this; and since there is a lot and I mean a lot of dark in this, I am going to use a workable fixative so that all of the dark that I have already added to it, doesn't get badly smudged with finger tips and what not. I had planned on taking some WIP's of it, but I most likely will just post it once it's done. Maybe, maybe not, we'll just have to wait and see.

*- by "something" I mean an actual completed piece that is meant to be realistic/portrait. I have of course done things that I just imagined before, just nothing I can really consider a fully completed drawing or painting. I know that by just reading the entry I kinda contradict myself a bit. So this is the explanation if you will, of what I actually meant.

bye for now, and please don't miss the boat

Sooooo, I haven't been on DA for the last 3 months or so because of computer problems. But i have finally been able to resolve those problems, and came back to DA only to find over 300 deviations. I must say I was very happy to see so much great new work from all of my favorite artists here on DA, great work!! to all of you. What am I doing woth drawings and whatnot you ask? Well, i think i will finally be able to update with my Frida portrait, Carmen Maura portrait and a few more. I did do a Penelope Cruz drawing, which at first was turning out really good (i thought it was going to turn out amamzing!), but sadly I have to report that it just turned into a big mess, the nose turned out horrible, her top started out with a checkered patternn, but then went intp a sold red color, but after my change, i wasn't able to fix the checkers, so it just looks like blah. WHen i went into doing the background, i decided too just have fun with my watercolrs, since it was already going down hill. But it was fun, so i'm not too worried about it. I am now working on a drawing of the band Straylight Run, it's from an ad promoting their new album The Needles The Space. So far so good, first time i draw 4 people in one peice, with a nice background. I think i might have made John a bit small, but not the big of a difference, so i'm good with it so far. About 22 hours into it, and I think I might have about another good 10 or so left. I am going to try to take WIP pics of them starting from this point on, since my sister just bought a new digital camera. I have to get going now, but hopefully will have some new pieces up by this weekend :crosses fingers:

I finished the Carmen Maura Anotonia drawing a few days ago, and again must say that I wam EXTREMLY happy with it. I think i was able to get a get resemblence wit Carmen. I really can't wait to post it on here. I was getting ready to take a photo of it (along with Frida and my Ballerina) when my sister's camera just gave out. But I do promise that the moment I am able to take really good phot's of them I will. In the meantime i did do a real quick drawing of Rossy De Palma that I uploaded, nothing speacial really, just something to do while awaiting the arrival of my illustration boards. I used some really old scrap paper, but it was fun to do, and did keep me busy. And yes, I realize that the shading done on it is lurid, proud to say it may be my worst, haha.
Oh yes, before I forget, as you know I work in graphite, but graphite tends to smudge alot, does anyone know how or what I should do to prevent this? I've hear that using parchment (sp?) paper helps by covering the peice, but not sure if I should use parchement or tracing paper? I know of some sprays out in the market that are used to keep graphite from smugding, but have also heard that they tend to make the paper yellow after some time. So not too sure what to do, any advice would be wonderful.

Thanks in advance.

So, i thought i should let everyone know that i finally finished the ballet dancer and must say that i am extremly happy with it. Especially the leg muscles, i think they look great. Hopeefually i'll be able to post a photo of it soon, i know i know, i've said that a few times already, mianly with my frida portrait. But i do promise that as soon as I'm able to get a good scan of it I will. I really don't want to post a scan that doesn't do it's justice. But on a new note, remember how I was having problesm deciding what to do after the ballerina, my choices were 1) sinister photo of jared leto and 2) very odd angle of G. way. Well i finaly made me decision and went with neither one. I'm doing a "portrait" of Carmen Maura and Antonia Banderas in the film Law of Desire. One of my faorite films, and she is my all time favorite actress, so i just had to! ha, so far so good, the angle of his head ia a bit odd, i'm not used to doing that type of angle, so i think i might get help on doing it.
In my last entry i was getting ready to work on my first illustration (hence the title "First Illustration" haha), and since then i have finished it. It is of Frida Kahlo, one of my favorite artists. Done in graphite and i added color pencil to it. I must say that I am extremly happy with it. I can't wait to post it up here, but because of it's size i have yet to upload it. I am now working on another illustraion board peice of a ballerina. It's on the same size board, but it's still going to be a full figure peice. I'm not very good at doing figures, so i figured i should try it and hopefully that will lead to my getting better at them. So far so good, I've done both legs and am starting on the skirt she is wearing. I most likely have put in about 6 hours so far into it, but i don't think i'll continue keeping count on it. I can't wait to get it done. I already have two ideas for my next peice either a portrait of Jared Leto from this months AP. He has a very sinister look on his face on the photo, and I think instead of just doing a full face portrait, I might draw the entire torso, in keeping with doing the figure. Or I can do this weird angle of Gerard Way, where his face is almost in three quarter view, but also looking upwards and sideways, it would deefiantly be a difficult angle for me, but still not sure which I will do. But i think i should just focus on what i'm doing now and make a decision when i get to that point. Yesterday I went to the John Lennon exhbit and it was amazing as always, I would reccommened to anyone who can go to go ASAP! It's something everyone should experience.

Hey everyone,

long time sine i've written. So i think i'll take this time to inform everyone on my latest projects. I recently began my first drwaing on illustration borad (15x20). It is a portrait of the mexican painter Frida Kahlo. I must say that I am very happy with how it's turning out. I've also decided to add color to it by adding red to her head band, yellow to her earings and necklace, and green/pink to the trimw on her dress. I've never added to color to a graphite drawing, so for my first time i think it is coming along rather well. I wanted to post WIP's of the peice, but because of it's size and my small scanner, i was not able to. But hope that i'll be able to post the finished product. So far i've worked on it for 21 hours and 30 min. and have at least 3-4 hours left. Everything it close to done with the exception of her nose and mouth. But i'm not sure what to do with the background. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Really wish i could post a pic of it so i could recieve better suggestions. Not sure what i want to do after this, but i'm sure i'll find something interesting. I would like to do a large portrait, but still not too sure on who. Suppose i should wait until i'm done with this peice before i start planning the next. Haha.

So yesterday I finished number two of the "Neorotics" Seris that I'm doing (which includes 'Off My Rocker'). I didn't give the second one a real name because I just can't think of anything. It was a total of about 13 hours, and I'm extremly happy with the end result. Everyone seems to like them so far. And since I had planned to start scratchboard, I decided to do the second Neurotic as my model. It's the same image just on another meduim, so far so good. Did I mention this is the first time I use scratchboard? I didn't think it would be this detailed. I'm using the X technique (thousands of little x's to make the entire image). I have no idea when it'll be done, but I workd for about 2 hourse today and my arm is as sore as hell. All worth it though. Can't wait to finish. I will try to put up the drawing in the next day or so. Although I already know that the scan will completly srew with it, but what can i do.

I was looking through my gallery a while ago, and noticed how my scanner changes everything in my drawings. So I guess this is a quick apology on behalf of my scanner.
