I really do, but lately I wonder about her...then she goes and does something that proves it. She's getting very old and starting to lose it...may have lost most of it, so it's painful to hear some of the things she says...thinking that buying me lunch equates to paying for a tank of gas (I run all her errands every week, so it's not out of place to want something, gas isn't free @_@). So she called my mom to ask what I do with my money (I get about $400 a month). My mom went on to tell her exactly what I do with my money...car insurance, weight watchers, gas, a fair amount of my food, some clothes, etc. And I go by her house to pick up her latest shopping list, and she's gotten me a card. it's a peanuts card, says 'You got a card for no reason at all!' and on the inside was 'If that doesn't prove you're special, nothing does!' signed 'Love you, Grandma'. made me smile ^_^. it also contained a check for $200...which more than the money itself shows that somewhere behind the pseudo senility, some part of the grandma I grew up with is still there, and still cares.

This film just came out today, and seems to have slipped under the radar of most people. The theater I saw it in was mostly empty. It's an adaptation of a 2002 horror/fantasy novel written by Neil Gaiman, done in the stop motion style of Nightmare Before Christmas and sharing Henry Selick as director. I'm not going to spoil the film, as it's a wonderful piece of mystery and delight, best described as a modern fairy tale.
It has a very specific atmosphere that works because of the stop motion medium...this film wouldn't exude quite the same feel in CGI or traditional animation. It's delightfully macabre at points and earns its PG rating. Parents wanting to take their children should remember PG means Parental Guidance and they should avoid taking kids who are disturbed by dolls or scared of spiders due to imagery in the film, as well as partial geriatric nudity.
This film really is an...experience, you have to see it for yourself to get it. I don't know if I can recommend it enough.

Been meaning to do this for awhile...it's a pointless ramble on other drivers' habits that annoy me.

1: Overly nice people
I understand niceness. And common courtesy. But when there's a line of cars behind you a half a mile long, DON'T let another mile and a half of cars turn in from another road to be nice...let one in and let it filter in properly, don't make everyone behind you really pissed off...

2: What lane do I want to be in?
People who seem to be in such an extreme rush, they switch between lanes every time they'll gain half a car length. What's really funny is this rarely works in the long run, and brings us to #3...

3: People who don't signal at all/as they turn
I believe you're supposed to signal some 100 yards from your turn, but many people seem to forget they even HAVE turn signals at all, and others just flip them on for a half second as they make their 45 mph turn into a road. SOMETIMES I can understand this..someone new to an area doesn't know where their turn is, etc...but they also don't tend to be going 45 mph at the same time...

4: People who get pissed at drivers who follow the rules
I can't tell you how many times I've been honked at for slowing down to 25 mph in a school zone with the lights flashing.

5: People who run blatently run red lights
These probably tick me off more than most...the light turned yellow awhile back, but they speed up...some 40 feet from the line, the light turns red, but they speed on through, making a left turn in front of traffic that just got a green...I'll admit to being halfway across when the light turns red, but I've never been so blatent as to start after the light's red...

EX: Bikers who pick and choose road rules
This is an honorable mention, to bikers who decide they get to choose which rules they want to obey, or ignore them altogether. They'll run red lights, expect to be given right of way like pedestrians, and all sorts of other madness. They seem to lack the understanding that I'd probably run them over if there weren't laws against it.

This is just what I can figure out off the top of my head...I may amend this or ramble nonsensically about something else later.

Retro Remake Reviews: Kirby Super Star (SNES/DS)

Hello all! This is the first in what I hope to make a series of reviews of the remakes of games I loved when I was younger. I plan to make it a recurring feature, provided people show interest. I'll give the basic overview of the game, and compare the original to the remake, and rate the remake on a 1-10 scale in comparison to the original.

My first RRR is of Kirby Super Star Ultra for the Nintendo DS, a remake of Kirby Super Star for the Super Nintendo. One of a few Kirby games released for the system, it is almost undoubtedly the best. It's a series of 6 smaller Kirby games, each with their own particular 'gimmick,' though they are all largely standard Kirby fare, aside from the Gourmet Race. In addition it featured three Sub-Games, as well as a Boss Rush Arena mode when you completed all six of the main games.

The remake on the DS has met with poor official reviews, though I can't blame the reviewers. When you start up a new game, you're presented with only the Spring Breeze game, a very simplistic mode that is itself a remake of Kirby's first game on the Game Boy, Kirby's Adventure. It is only after you start clearing game modes that KSSU opens itself up for the great game it is. It features three new Sub-Games that utilize the touch screen, and the original trio are unlockable. The original six Game Modes are all here, and the entire game has received a graphical overhaul that makes even the rather lovely SNES version look dated.

Aside from the new Sub-Games, KSSU gives fans of the original many pleasant surprises, in the form of four entirely new game modes, that continue to ramp up the difficulty curve following the original six. Revenge of the King is also a remake of Kirby's Adventure, but is more reminiscent of the game's Hard Mode, with tweaked bosses, more difficult enemy placement, stages almost taken directly from the original GB game, and the first Dedede boss fight to give people a run for their money in years. Meta Knightmare Ultra allows you to play through five of the original six KSS modes (Gourmet Race is not included) as Meta Knight, who utilizes an experience point system to restore health and unleash deadly attacks. It culminates with a new final boss for Milky Way Wishes that makes the original look like a walk in the park. Helper to Hero is similar to the original Arena mode (still included), except instead of playing as Kirby, you control one of his various 'helper' characters in an effort to defeat 13 of the game's bosses and prove even Helpers can be Heroes. The final mode, True Arena, is a more difficult Arena challenge, where you face off against all of the new and tweaked bosses with very little health restoration, as well as an all new final boss at the end.

Kirby Super Star Ultra is a truly excellent remake of an already great game. Hal really went above and beyond the call of duty for this remake. It does have one annoyance that keeps me from considering this game effectively perfect, and that's the controls. They swapped the control setup from most Kirby games, so the A button makes him jump and B causes him to inhale or use his powers. It's not a game breaking change and can be easily adjusted to, but it is still an annoying blemish on an otherwise superb game.

Kirby Super Star Ultra (Nintendo DS): RRR 9.5

AC, radio, it's fine...I've had to drive her around a lot, but I love her and she's letting me use her car, so...

A couple days ago, I was pulling out of a parking lot, when the car...stopped. it just had a complete cessacion of power. I got it half into the parking line so it wasn't making an obstruction, called for help, my dad suggested jiggling the battery, so I did...electrical came back. yay. Got it home, we unscrewed the electrical connectors to the battery (this was apparently something my dad knew about from previous problems...but mechanics refused to acknowledge it existed) and re-tightened em, and it ran fine again...until today.

My home's driveway is long, and downhill...and halfway down, it died again. Not just died, but the brakes locked up, wouldent push down even, and there's no emergency brake...I forced it into park and the thing GRINDED to a stop just before hitting one of our parked cars...it was pretty much a miracle. I am never driving that car again. And my Grandma probably shoulden't, either.

Orks let me use some greens and whatnot, and aren't as intensive detailwise. In addition, I'm working on some 'display quality' pieces, the first of which I did was WAY back with Typhus, Herald of Nurgle. My current projects are Celestine the Living Saint, Ghazkhull (of course...though I'll get another for coverting Mega Armored Warboss), and the Master of Ravenwing on Jetbike.

Lastly, Pokemon! Huzzah! I've got Pearl, and am looking to trade for stuff I don't have/can't get. I would love to get a Lucky Egg to speed some leveling up, but I know that's asking an awful lot...so mostly just any pokemon I can't get in Pearl...for stuff I CAN get in Pearl ^_^.
Well, another Christmas come and gone, and I'm STILL behind on painting. Will probably get worse, as Christmas was PSP time! I got one a couple years ago, eventually it broke (I dropped it) and getting it fixed was part of my present from my parents. I've got a good sized PSP library again, after someone stole my game carrier awhile back...currently I haves:

Valkyrie Profile
Disgaea (Christmas)
Jeanne d'Arc
Final Fantasy Tactics (Christmas)
Castlevania (Christmas)
Megaman X
misc UMD movies

It's also nice that my Christmas presents to others were appreciated...I got my little brother a sort of 'mirror dish' thing that you put an object in it and it reflects it so it looks like it's 3D in mid air...my mom got a candle, which she always loves...I got dad a nice religious shirt, and my grandma gets dinner from me next year.

My middle brother (younger than me, older than little brother) will be getting $10 when he gets in from college.

I went to Dragon*Con with a friend...pretty much everything that could go wrong (on a personal, and not con-wide level) did, but I had fun anyway! I got to meet Kittyhawk, she signed a shirt for me, and I forgot to ask what the right way to wash it was...@_@. I saw Donald Duck creator Don Rosa, passed by the table where Pete Abrams sits when he's not elsewhere...watched a lot of anime and movies. Mostly Death Note (episodes 3-16, missed 1st 2), and saw Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter. It is so absolutely horrible that it may be the best film evars. Must love the concept of a group of atheists who organize a hit squad to take out someone they don't believe in.

As for what went wrong...it was a comedy of errors, sort of. A friend of mine wanted to meet me RL, so he paid for my trip down there, etc, brought moneys for food and conswag, etc, I brought what I could scrape up. Day 1, we get there, meet up, get the rental car...turns out the website was deceptive...not only did the cost of the rental not include insurance, but there was also a $25 a day fee because he was 24 and not 25 >_>. Had he known that, the car woulda been in my name...ended up costing more than the hotel room! Second day, we go out to see the sights in Atlanta, discover the Con's already open (We thought it wasnt), he withdraws some cash from an ATM we stumbled across, and later realizes...he left his check card in the machine! Tragedy averted, he cancels the card, but we have to rely on me and what I brought for food, etc...thus SEVERELY reducing conswag...Though I got to see the Atlanta Aquarium, Whale Sharks are big, Otters are the ferrets of the sea. We hit the con some, I meet Kittyhawk, get a t-shirt...next day, everythng was fine, cept I forgot my cell phone at the hotel, but nothing serious. Third day, I forgot my con badge...I couldent get into the art show, dealer room, etc...and later in the evening, I couldent get into any con bits at ALL...turns out someone went in in full costume without paying, and they had to crack down security...it was panicy trying to get in touch with my friend and meet up with him...last day of the con there just wasn't much to do...I needed to get more money from my mom, due to a comedy of errors I had accidently gone into overdaft on my debit card (from pre-trip...I was using cash for the trip till now) and had to have her stick money in to counter the overdraft, the overdraft fee, and then some @_@.

Ultimately, my friend got my money back to me from an actual bank (Cause they didnt open till today...weekend + labor day...), I paid back my mom, gave my grandmother MASSIVE hugs...for she had given me $100 for the trip, simply because I helped her grocery shop, etc...I never expected payment for that! Thanks to her money, me and my friend had food!

Bottom line: Grandmas rule.

I've had abunch of these models for ages...ironically it was getting one box of stealth suits (and then another) that got me on this Tau kick...sorry for the dark photo, my work environment is lit well enough for books, etc, but for close ups of slightly dark colored models...eh.

Well, my birthday hit, June 30th, got We Katamari, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and money. Also, in my typical flippant nature, I'm taking up Warhammer again...I finally found an army I think I can do, the Dark Elf Cult of Slaanesh. I realized what my problem is, and it's painting the same trooper over and over...the Cult has a mix of Dark Elf and Chaos units, leaving it much variety, and easily only one of each unit. block of Spearmen, crossbowmen, daemonettes, shades, Devoted...and that's just Core troops.

I put up a Cold One Knight here, somewhat of a 'test' of new background more than to show it off...it'll hit Scraps once i get the whole unit up. I realized the green tables at the FLGS were too bright and were contrasting, so I tried some terrain as a backdrop, and I think it worked well...I have a friend with an army surplus blanket that's a darker green, might ask him to let me borrow it as a backdrop for bigger pictures.

Lastly, the Cult's gonna require a bit of GW special ordering...most stuff's good, but for a few conversions I want, as well as one particular unit (the only Dogs of War we can take, and a bunch of overindulgant Dark Elves to boot!), but aside from that I'm good at the FLGS. I'm debating what to do for a mature thumbnail...Daemonettes may not be much, but they do have exposed breasts, so I need to mark em Mature.

Next up is the Cyclopses, which should be done by wednesday, and possibly Morghul as well, which would render my Skorne complete (until the Praetorians and Cannoneer come out), letting me work on the Trolls.

In any case, enjoy the Titan's flag symbol while you can. the Cyclopses, Praetorians, et all are gonna use Makeda's House symbol instead. It's not only easier to paint, but fits into smaller areas, which the Skorne symbol on the Titan's flag, the biggest one thus shown, was a squeeze.

Going up Wednesday should be the Skorne Titan Gladiator and Archdomina Makeda (I know she's not a Warpack 'lock, but I just felt like painting her first. Morghul is next).

Wow, I got the Stormblades standard bearer, and decided to go for it...I painted a freehand Cygnus (the Cygnar faction symbol) on the flag, an uneven surface...I never even did freehand on FLAT surfaces before! I know to most of you Dev-art people, painting some silly little symbol isn't much, but my freehand skills...well, I obviously underestimated em, but they're not my specialty. But anyway, I did it! Pic of him alone will come up with I paint the rest of im, I had to do the flag or it'd be bugging me for all eternity...

Special thanks to the Privateer Press forumites for telling me 'you can just strip the flag if it doesn't work', gave me the courage to try...and to [link], for having a great tutorial on how to paint the faction symbols.

I should probably go to bed as it's 3:17 AM, but I just finished submitting pictures of my finished Cygnar stuff (and one Kreoss), so I figured I'd use the Journal for once. I played my first game of Warmachine with my fully painted group, and eked out a win! I even got a jack bond, the Lancer is bonded to Darius and is Belicrose, which considering how useless some of the jack bonds are to D, isnt bad. The Sword Knights usually run with the Lancer, so their Flank power cancels out the -2 he gives em, so it works out rather nicely.

Next up...either finishing the Menoth starter box, or building to 750 with Darius...that'll be replacing the Ironclad with a Defender, filling out the Sword Knights, adding the Thunderhead, a Gun Mage Captain, and the Piper.

Anyway, back to avoiding sleep by painting things.
