it was one hell of a night for us and am glad you guys were there to share the event with all the volunteers of Rock Ed Iloilo

I left Rock Ed Iloilo's Rock The Rehas 2009 event at around past 1AM
took time to charge my batteries etc for another long day ahead of me..
an opportunity to talk w/ Cookeh as well

Me and my sister Doriedel took the 5AM air-con bus bound for Estancai, Iloilo
slept in the bus for almost 4hrs and we arrived in Estancia town at around past 7AM . We waited for the guys from our farm in San Dionisio, Iloilo to arrive, riding in our family's big truck.



We were bound for Binuluangan Island in several pumpboats at around 9AM.. with friends, town officials and relatives all to attend my Lola's burial.. crossing to the island was greeted by a mild rain..

Arriving at the island.. I was greeted by a sheer crowd of people.. I guess it's the usual, my lolo's burial last 2002 was the same also.. we had almost everybody in the islands attending, besides this is Carles..



The formal mass for lola was held the day before and so today was more of a burial rite mixed with the chaos of the islands.. ahahahah.. LOL

My dad did most of the talking. Addressing relatives and friends. And yes.. family photos.. deym we are such a big clan.. XD XD

We took lola's body from the house to the family cemetery w/c was just a walk away on the nearby hill overlooking the sea.. she wil rest beside my grandfather.

Doriedel my younger sister w/c we call also Doray.. as we all claim was my lola's junior gave the last words and prayer for lola... and in a crowd of people we commit my grandmother to her resting place beside my grandfather.

Then everybody and we do mean everybody had lunch in the family's house. The burial now evolved into a fiesta.

I took the opportunity to go back to the city, since we only have Nanay Gloria watching the house at home.. dad will be staying in the island for a few days to talk w/ his siblings and family matters.. mom and the sisters are going to our farm in San Dionisio on the next day.. and thus I will be the one going home..

At around 1PM, with a few relatives and friends I cross back to the mainland.. with a moderate rain and rough waters. eaching the port of Estancia.. I headed straight to the bus terminal and caught the air-con bus bound for Iloilo City.. we left the town of Estancia at around 2:30PM

Spent the next 4 hrs sleeping in the bus... we arrived in Tagbak terminal at Jaro at almost 6PM ... and by 7PM I was home w/c suprised Nanay Gloria because she was expecting us back by the next day.



Tired and super exhausted... I guess this ended my 2 days marathon. Satisfied w/ the outcome of the Rock Ed Iloilo RTR 2009 event and happy that I was able to do my final responsibility to my grandmother.. I was also happy to be able to talk to Cookeh, whom was surprised I went home after all and was able to be online even for just a bit.

when Karen Guanco of Headtone Music Philippines told me to have a photo shoot with Diet of Wormz, I never hesitated. The guys of Diet of Wormz had been close friends of mine since I was still playing as the guitarist for SwitchJarz. Our bands are sort of twins in some ways as we had always played together in gigs as well as share the jamming sessions while rehersing or while at our bassist Flip's house.

Since 2005, Rock Ed Philippines has been ending its work-year with a mammoth celebration of Human Rights. We hold eight (Cool simultaneous events in eight (Cool train stations of the MRT line along historic EDSA. ROCK THE RILES is held every Sunday closest to International Human Rights Day. (Intl HR Day is celebrated every Dec 10)

Despite having no commercial funding this year, we all decided to push through with it anyway. Everyone involved in 'Rock the Riles 2008' pitched in to make it possible. Shelled out cash, lent some equipment, lent expertise, talent and time.

So we can squarely say: This one's ours.

This gathering is our rally of sorts, that one time we decide to physically come together and say the same thing at the same time. That one time we decide to pool our voices and say "No more excuses, Philippines."

Next Sunday, take the train. Choose a station. Watch a gig. Take a stand. Rock and roll.

not much to do.. not really being productive especially in earning much needed cash...

I do am busy.. as a volunteer though... I actually tire myself to death working on a lot of stuffs for other people FOR FREE...

damn.. I really need to do something w/ my life.. I just turned 25 last sunday.. O_O... fucking god I am 25!!! and yet my life is still a mess and no where of getting stable..

I wanted to go back to making big drawings and paintings... its just that I am not earning anything for now that it's also hard for me to invest on art materials to satisfy my artistic cravings..

photography I guess is the only thing keeping my sanity... I also find it to be my most effective source of income but I don't have any projects or commissions so I am just an IDLE BASTARD for now..

We request everyone to please please please pray for Tara, a very young lady who was shot in the head this early morning during a robbery. She is a musician (guitarist for Saffron Speedway) and artist with a ready smile for everyone and warmth about her that is rare.
Today is also her birthday. She is spending it at the hospital in highly critical condition. Please make your birthday wish for her right now and pray that she not only survive this ordeal but also come out as good as she was before this nightmare happened.

Robber shoots lady who refused to give up laptop

MANILA, Philippines - A 23-year-old woman is now in critical condition after being shot in the head early Wednesday morning after she attempted to wrestle her laptop away from a thief in Cainta, Rizal.
A report by radio dzBB’s Sam Nielsen said the unidentified thief used a .38 caliber pistol to shoot the victim identified by the Cainta police as Tara Santelices of Brookside Subdivision in Cainta town.
Santences’ companion Joyce Mejias, who was riding the Marikina-bound jeepney with the victim at the time of the incident, said the suspect declared a holdup while the jeepney was moving along Felix Ave. in Cainta.
But when the victim tried to wrestle back her bag containing a laptop, the assailant immediately shot her, took some of the passengers' bags and immediately fled the scene.

according to joee, she even thinks that the driver might have been in on it also. basta simpleng holdup lang.. i'm not sure whether or not tara fought back or if there was any kind of struggle.. i dont even know kung anong nakuha nila from them. basta the gun went off and si tara yung tinamaan. joee also mentioned that noone in the jeep helped them at all. if anything, the passengers who kept getting off just prolonged the ride to the clinic where the jeepney driver dropped them off and disappeared.
when joee realized that the clinic would not be able to do anything, sinakay sila nung clinic sa cab and when joee was pleading for a nurse to go with them to help her stop Tara's bleeding while in the cab, still noone helped.
according to joee, tara was still conscious and responding to joee while they were in a cab going to the hospital in marikina. when they got to the hospital, the doctors took over. that was the last time joee saw tara awake.
right now, tara's in the ICU of Medical City. the bullet is still lodged in her brain. right now, she's on life support. you can go visit her from 5pm to 7pm everyday. i think the doctors are waiting for her condition to stabilize lang. then tara's family has to decide na talaga whether or not they should let the doctors operate on Tara. if she undergoes surgery, it's a 50-50 chance of making it... so please.. let's keep praying... i think we all want a miracle. so let's pray for one.

Tara is the guitarist of a band called Saffron Speedway. She is now in Medical City and is fighting for her life. Our gig series called INGAT AVENUE will raise funds to assist her family as they brace for medical expenses.

Road safety includes being extra careful and alert when we commute. It ALSO means while we weigh and prioritize our safety, we should HELP someone who is in trouble. It can be through shouting out loud, (this always startles them) call for help, stay alert and yes, someone once shared a story that he threw a shoe, a book, and his glasses at the robber to drive him away. That way, he kept his distance from the robber's knife point but still managed to assault him enough to let him stop his deed. Shout! Forget poise and shit like that. Scream! Throw something. Yes, when we are on the lookout for other people's safety, we allow them to watch over us, too. And safety of people and property is INGAT AVENUE's campaign.

These things shouldn't happen. And we must do what we can do to promote an attitude and a culture that will give thieves a difficult time being thieves. (e.g. well-lit roads, real security enforcement, more capable investigation teams, security cams, a TEAM EFFORT among passengers sharing the same jeep, bus or FX, whatever. Damn, I'm stumped.) And we should make inconsiderate drivers have a tougher time being stupid. (I'm not sure how yet.)

oh well.. am re-exploring film photography as I have finally got my film SLR fixed.. yay!!

and I have newly acquired a instamatic camera w/ a panorama option..

we have formally organized Iloilo's own lomography group LomoIloilo - [link] ... and we had just successfully concluded our 2nd group shooting session.. with this in mind, I guess I have more reason to dwell myself again into film photography

Though most part of Iloilo have recovered already.. some areas are still in deep shit.
We are currently coordinating relief operations. Aklan province is seriously in need of relief assistance and so if you guys could send help there.. that would really be beneficial to the people there.

NGO work also demands my constant attention as the typhoon brought about more work in the NGO.

I find myself in dire need of rest as I am required to travel around because of the relief operations work.

Kapwa 2 event was held here right after the chaos.. and we had been really busy in Museo Iloilo and University of the Philippines Visayas Iloilo City campus doing a conference on Indigenious cultures.. will be posting pictures when I'll have net back in my house..

Rock Ed Iloilo rocked Iloilo once again after their successful “asa Arte” event in Brgy. Jayubo, Lambunao, Iloilo last February. This time the event is highlighted to kickoff the start of the Rock The Rehas film screenings featuring four documentary films about life in prison namely: 1048:2261 by Gang Badoy (founder of Rock Ed Philippines); Buhay Looban by Lourd de Veyra (Radioactive Sago Project) & Marj Lachica; Dancing for Discipline by Pepe Diokno and dokumenTADO:Rock The Rehas by Tado as one of major projects for Rock Ed Philippines through the Asia Foundation.

Gang Badoy, Executive Director for Rock Ed Philippines; Tado, Pepe Diokno and Leslie Umaly took time to spend a weekend with the Iloilo crowd as to talk and spread the word of volunteerism and advocacy for making a better country for our society. Two representatives from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Ungka also took the stage and talked about the situations inside Iloilo City’s nearest BJMP facility. An interactive forum gave opportunities for the crowd to ask questions and cite their own opinions about the films, volunteerism and regarding situations that are happening within our prison system.

The event also was a chance to gather donations of used clothes, food, toiletries and slippers for the benefit of BJMP Ungka as part of the Rock The Rehas project of Rock Ed. Used books also were collected for the benefit of Sto. Angel Elementary School, San Miguel, Iloilo as part of the ongoing BookBigayan of Rock Ed Philippines.

Everybody had a good time as the night was rocked by the crunching sounds of the bands Martians, Diet Of Wormz, Four Horse Men, Children's Playground & Sixpounder.

The night more interesting as the guys from Iloilo counter culture took the opportunity to interview Rock Ed Philippines’s Executive Director and Founder Gang Badoy. The mayhem ensues as Tado got into the act as well. Everybody went home in the early hours of the morning drunk yet happy and contented of the night fulfilled.

The day after Jailhouse RockEd was more of a serious note as Gang gathered Rock Ed Iloilo for the benefit of discussing more plans for Rock Ed Iloilo before reurning back to Manila. Despite the hangovers and the sleepy eyes, Rock Ed Iloilo ended the day transporting the donations to a secure location prior to being handed over to the beneficiaries of the event.

Rock Ed Iloilo will always be grateful to all who donated and participated in such an event. You guys RockEd!!

I have just caught wind of the Orphaned Works bill being presented in the US. And this concerns EVERYONE. I quote Mark Simon on his take concerning this issue.

An Orphaned Work is any creative work of art where the artist or copyright owner has released their copyright, whether on purpose, by passage of time, or by lack of proper registration. In the same way that an orphaned child loses the protection of his or her parents, your creative work can become an orphan for others to use without your permission.

Currently, you don't have to register your artwork to own the copyright. You own a copyright as soon as you create something. International law also supports this. Right now, registration allows you to sue for damages, in addition to fair value.

What makes me so MAD about this new legislation is that it legalizes THEFT! The only people who benefit from this are those who want to make use of our creative works without paying for them and large companies who will run the new private copyright registries.

These registries are companies that you would be forced to pay in order to register every single image, photo, sketch or creative work.

It is currently against international law to coerce people to register their work for copyright because there are so many inherent problems with it. But because big business can push through laws in the United States, our country is about to break with the rest of the world, again, and take your rights away.

With the tens of millions of photos and pieces of artwork created each year, the bounty for forcing everyone to pay a registration fee would be enormous. We lose our rights and our creations, and someone else makes money at our expense.

This includes every sketch, painting, photo, sculpture, drawing, video, song and every other type of creative endeavor. All of it is at risk!

If the Orphan Works legislation passes, you and I and all creatives will lose virtually all the rights to not only our future work but to everything we've created over the past 34 years, unless we register it with the new, untested and privately run (by the friends and cronies of the U.S. government) registries. Even then, there is no guarantee that someone wishing to steal your personal creations won't successfully call your work an orphan work, and then legally use it for free.

As if artist protection isn't fuzzy enough. And for friends who are not based in the US. THINK ABOUT THIS.

Photos on the internet could be orphaned. With tens of millions of photos shared online with services like Flickr, Shutterfly and Snapfish, there is a huge opportunity for unauthorized use of your photos... legally.

edit: Even if we don't live there, we're going to get hit VERY HARD. Your pictures, your vectors, your stocks, your paintings, your songs and writings... anyone can take credit for them under the impression that your works are unregistered, hence ORPHANED. Regardless where you come from, it will be a difficult and costly argument as to define what are your rights as a creator and the rights of anyone on American soil to make use of what you make.

This legalizes theft. Not just theft of your work but possibly even your very identity. And your ability to protect yourself..... well.. WHAT ABILITY? Legally you can't accost anyone if they do take whatever you make.

And if it does push through, what's the sure fire way to protect ourselves? WHAT? DON'T POST? Are we going to allow ourselves to shun our right to expression because of this?

The people behind the bill say it's not forced registration, but you won't have any rights unless you register. THIS IS SEMANTICS! Of course, this is forced registration and we can't stand for it!

AGAIN GUYS. LETS VOICE OUR OPINIONS ON THE MATTER. Everything you make, everything you placed your heart and soul on deserves to stay yours!

it really compels me to do more of such things.. of which I think I will be submitting here anytime soon.. I do still have more pics of the kids in the garbage dumpsite here since my work as a volunteer in a civic organization give me opportunity to help and be with these kids in the garbage dumpsite on a daily basis.. it also gives me the chance to practice my photojournalism thing...

I guess sharing to you these pics may in a way give light to their lives as I also would indulge myself in being w/ these kids hoping that my presence w/ them would serve a way for them to improve their lives.. I am proud ta say that I am a VOLUNTEER.. wehehe.. a volunteer photographer, art teacher and English teacher for the kids...

We were able to donate 800 used textbooks to the school Don Ignacio Ramirez Memorial School of Jayubo, Lambunao

And the kids did enjoy our art class and the short animation film the guys from WVCST prepared.

The short walk to Mari-it Wildlife Conservation Park was a much needed opportunity to unwind after the whole day of volunteer work...

Bug Run - Feb 9 - 10, 2008
Iloilo City - Roxas City - Iloilo City

The Bug Run took a year of planning for the Volkswagen Käfer Club of Iloilo Inc. The club itself has to tackle a lot of things before really committing itself on the idea of a long trip for everybody. Iloilo City to Roxas City is quite a long travel especially if you took via the Balasan route. We knew quite well that not all VW Beetles can commit in the event as car conditions and personal obligations may hamper them from participation.

Come January 2008 and the guys met to discuss the possibility of really making the activity possible. From there we had a confirmation of 15 VW beetles, a reasonable number and a feasible one. The date of activity was set and the preparations were noted. February 9 came with much anticipation as those whom committed to the road trip prepared their cars as well as themselves.


The starting point was the Shell gasoline station just after Gran Plains Subdivision, Jaro, Iloilo City. We had 13 VW beetles ready as one was not able to make it due to personal matters and another suffered from car trouble. It was a long morning for most of us as we prepped our cars, double checking everything from the full tank of gasoline to the engine oil and the last minute application of car wax. Some of the club members whom cannot participate came to show support and to send the guys off.

Seeing that everything was ok, everybody started their engines and lined up as we prepared to hit the road. We had a small plan on the order of cars and we headed out to leave the city limits. It was pretty interesting to see the bugs lined up as I was in the last car having the mechanic with us. Our pink VW was the sweeper car. We left at past 9 in the morning.

The trip was a mixed of sunny weather and rain. We had people look at the convoy with curiosity. Its not a frequent thing to see 13 bugs lined up speeding on the highway. Kids saluted and hit each other to the common games we are quite fond of when seeing a bug on the streets. I was really amused at the sight of people smiling at us as we sped away.

We took a break at Barotac Viejo, had a cup of coffee there and we took a stop at Hilltop in Ajuy as we enjoyed the scenic coastal beauty of the place. We also took a break at Ajuy town proper. From there on was a non-stop trip to Balasan, Iloilo.

We arrived at Vice-mayor Ganzon’s residence in Balasan just 30 minutes after 12 noon. We had our cars line up outside his house. The Ganzon family had prepared a hearty lunch for us and we really enjoyed it. Then a text message came that the VW that had car trouble was catching up with us and so we decided to wait for him. We enjoyed that early afternoon talking about everything and then the fourteenth bug arrived.

We left the Ganzon’s residence at past 3 in the afternoon. Our last leg of the trip to Roxas City was met with very heavy rain. We slowly make our way out of Pilar, Capiz with almost zero visibility and only guided by the car signal lights of every bug in the line. Minutes after the heavy rain stopped and we found our way in Pontevedra, Capiz. We took a detour in Pontevedra as we visited the brother of one of the club member whom was our lead car.

Well I guess things will not really go without a hitch. As we were leaving Pontevedra, one of the bug had engine trouble and took time to start up. We waited for him and when we were on our way, another bug had almost ran out of gas. We slowly took him to a gas station to fill up and we slowly assisted the other bug all the way to Roxas City.

We arrived in Casa Felisa, San Antonion Resort Village, Baybay, Roxas City past 6 in the evening. Upon arriving our attention was on the car that had engine trouble. We everybody lending their tools to the mechanic we spend half of that evening figuring out what was wrong with the engine of that VW as well as securing our rooms for the night. The night became more interesting as people came to look at the cars lined up in the parking area as well as VW enthusiasts of Roxas City came and talked with us. Everybody took a break as we headed out to dinner at the local beachside seafood restaurant that was just a walk away. The dinner was welcomed with much conversation on our experiences that day. We had a long talk about that day’s trip and assessed on things that would prove to be useful for the next day’s trip back to Iloilo City.

We returned to Casa Felisa late that night and some of us called it a day while the rest were still focused on the engine of the VW that broke down. We had some conversations with the Roxas City VW group until late that night.

With its humble beginnings as a devotion to the Señor Sto. Niño forty years ago, Dinagyang Festival has grown into a tourist attraction the city and province of Iloilo can be proud of. For two consecutive years no less than the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (Atop) has named Dinagyang as the Best Tourism Event in the Philippines. No wonder, Dinagyang performers are always invited in various occasions not only in other parts of the country but also abroad.

What makes Dinagyang Festival a unique tourist attraction? It is the Ilonggo spirit of unity and the nature of being fun-loving people. Today, Dinagyang is not only known for the drumbeats, frenetic dance steps and well-designed costumes of the performers but also with food – as exemplified by the traditional Dinagyang Food Festival – and the merrymaking, where people not only serve as mere spectators but become part of the celebration.

Nevertheless, Dinagyang has not departed from the original spirit of the devotion. Weeks leading to the highlights of the Dinagyang, novenas and masses are held at the San Jose Church where the replica of the image of the Sto. Niño de Cebu is enshrined. Also, not to be missed is the the traditional fluvial procession of the Sto. Niño at the Iloilo River with the faithful.

Remarkably, this year the organizers of Dinagyang Festival have adopted several innovations in a bid to put more class and to further improve the celebration. Dinagyang tribe performers will now use dark brown color for their body paint instead of the traditional soot. Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) executive director Ben Jimena explains this move as a way to make Dinagyang performers “unique” compared with the performers of other festivals.

Also, judging areas have been reduced to four instead of the usual five. This is to lessen the strain on the part of the tribe performers who in the previous years had to hurdle five performance areas.

Several other adjustments had also been made on the contest rules to optimize the performance of each participating tribe.

It is also noteworthy that for the first time a group from outside the region – the Tribu Ivatan from Batanes – is joining this year's Dinagyang competition. As stated by Batanes Rep. Carlo Diasnes they have joined Dinagyang to promote tourism in their place, a thing only the best tourism event in the country could deliver.

Indeed, at forty years Dinagyang has grown grown into something “larger than life!”

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) urges the Philippine Nation al Police (PNP) to stop treating journalists who covered the failed Magdalo uprising as enemies of the state. We protest in strongest terms the PNP's move to forcibly bring some journalists to the National Capital Region Police Office in Bicutan and condemn the confiscation of video footage of the day-long stand-off at the Manila Peninsula Hotel. We denounce the overkill that led to the tying of the hands of members of ABS-CBN's technical team and reporters in what looked like a virtual arrest. The explanation by police officials and Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro that the move was made to prevent the escape of Magdalo troops does not wash. The technical team had superiors who could have been asked to verify their identities. And, certainly, there is no reason police officials would be ignorant of the identities of reporters Pinky Webb and Ces Drilon. While we concede the PNP's right to conduct a thorough investigation of a crime – and we do not dispute that the takeover of the Peninsula was a crime – the police ought to follow legal procedures. Invitations to questioning shoul d be differentiated from coercion; journalists have the option to accept the invitation and, certainly, should be accorded the basic right to counsel. We concede authorities' right to demand a halt to coverage that could jeopardize the lives of state security forces but believe any move for redress should pass through normal channels, involving management of television stations and not lowly ground staff. While journalists' refusal to leave the Pen when ordered by the cops could have jeopardized their lives, live footage of the Pen standoff showed they did not block authorities from doing their tasks. Nor is their little to support suspicion s that media showed bias for Trillanes and company; if anything the rebels complained about media's alleged bias for government. It is regrettable that a day that would have given the government a clear-cut politic al victory would be marred by knee-jerk reactions of the authorities. This government claims it is protecting democr acy. It should realize that media is a prime component of the democracy it purports to serve.

I was out for the whole night with my friends in LOOB Inc. the NGO I work for as a volunteer staf. It was Yukie-san's birthday, the wife of Nong John, our head.

I actually went home earlier this morning (that's around 7am) and Nanay Gloria and my mom told me Frodo was dead already. Nanay had already buried him somewhere in the backyard. T_T

I guess there is nothing I can do... I just miss the guy, He has been with the family for more than 3 years already. Our regular tough guy, and so far the dog with the most bites.. mwahahahah!!

http://VanS3n.deviantart.com/journal/13706288/ Thu, 12 Jul 2007 09:43:18 PDT Brgy. Calajunan, Mandurriao, Iloilo City, the city garbage dumpsite area. My NGO had already been working with the people there for quite some time now. We already had 2 weekend activities there for the kids.

The NGO Loob Inc. had asked me to take pictures of the place to be sent to our fellow volunteers in Japan for this fundraising activity this weekend for that area. Well, I gladly accepted the opportunity to take em pics..

The only thing that was a problem was the weather, as in really bad weather. And to the fact that the place was a garbage dumpsite made things a bit of a challenge. Thankfully the weather was on our side for a while and by braving through the piles of almost everything and anything I was happy I was able to endure the stench.

The only thing I have observed from the people there is the simplicity of life and contentment. Something I really appreciate in them even if they live their lives in poverty.

Well after we were done, I was screaming for a bath, and worst, the weather decided not to be friendly with us anymore.

Oh well, was quite the experience.

Kodak was kind enough to replace the camera that died on me while I was on the field doing my photography commission in Libacao, Aklan... Like the darn thing just turned off for no apparent reason.. T_T That was last February 1, 2007.. Well since it was still under warranty.. *evil grin*

well 4 months later... apparently more than 4 months actually... since I just got it now.. they replaced my Kodak EasyShare C340 with a Kodak EasyShare C743

well both are quite the same.. in a sense though my first camera is merely 5.0 megapixel and has a small LCD screen like an inch something.. and this new Kodak C743 is 7.1 megapixel and has a 2.4 inch LCD .. w/c is much more convenient..

oh yeah.. I though I was really decided not to vote for the midterm elections.. but then again... after much thought..

I finally took that brief walk from my house to the polling precinct and casted my vote...

well, I am quite vocal about the political issue in my country that I never really trusted the system anymore.. w/c led to my initial decision not to vote since cheating, vote buying and such will never be avoided... not to mention violence related to the elections.. some of the major sights to see in the Philippines during the election period.

I do rant and whine about our pathetic political dramas and utter crap that is always seen on national television... so I do wanted not to be a part of it...

Yet I realize that I too am trying and hoping for changes in this chaotic country we call home... so I voted..

atleast if i voted, I do have the right to rant and whine at those bastards.. LOL!!

I woke up around 6:00 AM. It was quite difficult to wake up though since I was online until 3AM that morning. Packed my gear and my cameras, my Canon AE-1 SLR and Thea’s digicam because my Kodak C340 fell off my bag while on my way to Kalibo, Aklan to do Aklan assignment on Libacao, Aklan last January 31, 2007 and is officially broken. My digicam still has a warranty though.. T_T. I also got a handful of contact numbers of person and relatives in Antique on a piece of paper in case of emergency. I was going to take this trip on my own. I ate breakfast and had my coffee. I was at the Antique bus terminal around 7AM since I knew that the bus leaving for Anini-y, Antique will take off around 7:30AM. Took the opportunity to buy supplies like water, food, candies and a pack of cigarettes… I also loaded my cellphone which will be an essential part of the trip. The bus for Anini-y, Antique took off around exactly 7:30AM.

It was a long trip. It was a hot and dusty road, so I wrapped myself in Sarong and enjoy one of the best coastal views in Panay. I arrived at Brgy. Talisayan, Anini-y, Antique at around 11:30AM. I was texting my Aunt whom lives in San Jose, Antique when I saw that I almost passed the Barangay so I called on to the driver to stop. Grabbed my gear and got off the bus. I was about to ask the locals where the KKSA is when I realized that my cellphone was missing. And turned around and saw the bus too far away already. Just my luck.

I finally was able to see my contact there and proceeded to do what I was paid to do, take pictures. When that was done, I was offered to have lunch at the house of my client as we talk about my recent loss of my fone. She told me that the same bus will pass by around 12:30NN. So I waited on the side of the road until the bus passed by. Hailed at the driver and asked whether they found any cellphone, to my dismay none claim to have seen my fone and told me that maybe some passenger found it. Oh well, it was a broken fone anyways. And since it was SIEMENS I figured nobody could use it since it uses a different battery charger unlike the convention NOKIA everybody is familiar with. Another thing since it was already low on battery. I can’t cry over the loss of my fone, I have to finish this commission. So I must continue what I already started. So officially, my cellphone number 09212587386 is no longer a functioning number of mine starting that day.

1:00PM came and I was able to ride a jeepney from Anini-y, Antique to San Jose, Antique, the province’s capital town. Arrived at the San Jose terminal around 2PM and I jumped into a CERES bus bound for Culasi, Antique in the northern part of the province. I got off the town of Barbaza, Antique around 4PM. Asked a few locals and I was finally able to locate my next photo assignment. They told me that I have to hurry since no buses are passing by going back to San Jose, Antique as of that time. I spent almost 20 minutes taking all the necessary pictures.

The highway was already empty when I stood beside it. There was this old man in bare foot that started to talk to me. We had this sort of nice conversation about a lot of things. Apparently he was also waiting for any kind of transportation that was going back to San Jose. Just my luck, it seemed I’ll be stuck in Barbaza for the night. At around almost 5PM a jeepney bound for Bugasong, Antique passed by and me and this old man took the opportunity to shorten our distance between Barbaza and San Jose which was around 54 kilometers away. Got off the town of Bugasong. Luckily for me there were two other passengers who still need to go to Patnongon which was another town. We occupied a tricycle from Bugasong to Patnongon. I still took the old man with me. He got off somewhere along the way and was very thankful since I offered to pay for his fare which was around 80 pesos excluding mine. Something that made me feel a bit better as I was able to be a good Samaritan that day. We arrived at Patnongon hoping there was any transportation still bound for San Jose, to my luck there was none left and it was almost 6PM. I have to reach San Jose before then in order to catch any last trip back to Iloilo City some 104 kilometers away from San Jose. A motorcycle passed by and offered me a ride to San Jose for the price of 200 pesos. Seeing that I haven’t got much choice I took the offer and I found myself speeding along an almost empty highway while the sky was already getting dark.

I arrived at San Jose, Antique 20 minutes late and found that there are no longer any rides back to Iloilo City. And because I lost my phone, I don’t have means to contact anybody. It's not that much of a work but I do get to travel around the island of Panay getting paid to take pictures. Am also with a videographer Oscar Nava whom is in-charge of the video production part of the project and Thea Divinigracia the writer, web developer and contractor for the project. I have been really busy with working on the pictures as well as travelling out-of-town on a daily basis. Hopefully the project will be finished before the middle of December.

The project is for a local NGO Taytay sa Kauswagan Inc.. It's a micro-finace group that helps small businesses. Our work features the products of local producers whom have export quality. The project also includes a brochure in which I will also be in-charge of the lay-outs.

Not to mention also my existing work with another NGO Loob Inc. as volunteer alongside , and . We had just conducted a basic art lesson for the kids of Brgy. Namocon, Tigbauan, Iloilo.

And the anime guild which I head also Otaku Geirin is in high gear as we have acquire new chapters from other schools in Iloilo City. This also means that I also have to accomodate members from other schools as well as their weekly meetings in my schedule.

Manila, the Philippines – An oil tanker that sank in the Philippines last week is leaking tons of fuel, affecting the local marine and coastal ecosystems.

The M/V Solar I, chartered by Petron, the Philippines’ largest oil refiner, was carrying 2.4 million litres of oil to the southern island of Mindanao when it went down in unusually rough waters off Guimaras Island, several hundred kilometres south of the capital, Manila.

To date, 200,000 litres of oil have leaked from the tanker, contaminating a 24km2 area. The oil slick has already reached the coastal towns of Nueva Valencia and Jordan on Guimaras Island, as well as Villadolid, Pulupandan and Bago on Negros Island. The spill is heading up through the Guimaras Strait.

The Guimaras Strait is one of the most productive fishing grounds in the country, as well as a popular tourist destination. It is home to pristine white sand beaches, several marine sanctuaries and unspoiled coral reefs and mangrove forests.

The Philippines coast guard is calling this the worst oil spill in the country’s history. According to officials, 1,000ha of mangrove forests have been affected, including parts of the Taclong Island Sanctuary, a feeding and breeding ground for fish and other species.

“Oil spills are most destructive when they reach the shoreline,” said Abbie Ramos of WWF-Philippines. “Critical habitats such as coral reefs and mangrove forests are being affected and will take years to repair.”

Threatened species such as the dugong, green and hawksbill turtles, and several cetacean species can also be found along the Strait.

“The area is tremendously rich in marine life,” added Dr Jose Ingles, WWF-Philippines coordinator for the Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion. “A spill of this proportion is simply catastrophic.”

The coast guard has sent oil spill response teams from Manila and Batangas and doing all they can to clean up the leak.

WWF hopes a national oil spill contingency plan that includes all stakeholders — coastguard, oil industry, local fishermen and coastal communities — will help pool resources in an effort to form rapid response teams to deal with any future oil spills throughout the country.

In addition, as extreme weather events may very well be part of our future, WWF is seeking new standards for transport of hazardous cargo in rough weather, and current shipping routes should be reviewed and new options considered in order to avoid particularly sensitive marine areas.

• The Guimaras oil spill is the second such incident in the Philippines in the last eight months. In December 2005, a power barge ran aground on the nearby coast of Antique, dumping 364,000 litres of bunker oil. This oil spill severely polluted 40km of Antique’s coastline and decimated more than 230ha of pristine mangrove forest. Rehabilitation costs are estimated at US$ 2 million, and clean up efforts have not yet been completed.

• WWF has been working in the Guimaras Strait area for several years to promote sustainable coastal management. In 2004, WWF-Philippines facilitated the completion of participatory coastal resources assessments covering a 54km coastline and 37,187ha of municipal waters in the four towns of the Northern Guimaras Strait, as well as developed a programme for the sustainable management of the Strait’s blue crab fishery.

The oil spill has already affected more than 20,000 families in Guimaras. 17 barangays from 3 municipalities. It has already reached some towns in Northern Iloilo ... It has been sighted as far as Cadiz City, Negros Occidental.

We are still struggling with the clean up... it's not easy since there is a major health hazard and we lack proper equipment. To be honest... as long as the tanker is down there at the bottom spilling bunker oil to the surface, even if how effective the clean up be, the oil will be there the next day.

Taklong Island, a marine sanctuary was badly damaged by the oil spill as well as 20 smaller islands more or less that are natural marine sanctuaries that are damaged as of now.

Basically, I don't think in 3 years matapos ito, minimum of 6-10 years the most. And the recovery of the natural ecosystem will take 30 years more or less.

Schools in Iloilo City are already coordinating with each other over relief efforts. Though we are not allowed to go to Guimaras to directly participate in the clean up operations due to major health concerns, students are now collecting plastic bottles to be made into make-shift boom floaters.
