As a friend pointed me, I might post some new stuff up here... and since I just came back from a 19 day trip with my brother through Cuba today (Santiago de Cuba, El Salton, Bayamo, Camaguey, Remedios, Santa Clara, Trinidad (not recommended, imho), Cienfuegos, Valle de Viñales and, of course, la Habana), I have some pics to post.

Since there is a lot to sort out first (crap, fun shots, architectural details (one of my interests), it might take a while to get the *best* (double cough) up here.
Anyways, first one posted ^^

After two weeks at the office (which was quite dull ), I went back to the scene where it all happens: the Professor Tulpstraat in Amsterdam. What I especially like are the traces that are left by former users and inhabitants. Not only old constructions and parts of fronts became visible while stripping the interior, you also find stuff and things that people left behind, such as a copy machine from 1980, old chairs and sofa's from the 60s, different layers of wall paper from all era's... on top of this journal you find a small collage of stuff i found, at the background some old parts of wall paper, and on top some kind of business cards from a barber shop that was located in the Amstel Hotel (i would date those from the 30s), which i found underneath some old floors in one of the appartments.

I posted a first pic in my scraps, I'll try to upload some more, so you guys get an impressions what I do nowadays (for those who are interested and I am not that much online to view all your works recently (unfortunaly)

Well, time to get the happy new year wishes from this place...

I haven't been around much lately, due to school exams and a school project that had to be finished for wednesday (plus a presentation of the whole project...) - and now you people filled up my message centre again (thanks for doing that ) - I will go through it, but - of course - I can't comment on each piece...

Anyways - I have finally found a work placement for my study ! I will start on January 31 with a restoration project in Amsterdam at the Professor Tulpstraat, just behind the Amstel Hotel (see pic). The main building in this row was in use as a stable for the hotel guests, but for the past hundred years they were in use as housing and offices.

The project also includes some new development (reconstruction of two demolished houses) and renovation, so all kinds of work are included. After all, it still is meant as a small introduction to get an idea of what I might do after my study

Had quite a busy day yesterday - had to go to school in the morning in Utrecht, went to Amsterdam in the afternoon (shot my first b/w film - eager to see the results!) and had dinner with a friend that evening in Den Bosch - finally ended up that i travelled 4 hours and 30 minutes by train that day!

It was quite an expensive day too, not that i had dinner in an exclusive restaurant - but i baught a book at an antiquarian bookseller in Amsterdam (i'm not telling what i paid for it! ). But what a book! I've searched for a copy quite a long time - this book is a reproduction of all the row houses at three of Amsterdam's main canals. Originally drawn in 1767 (reprinted in a limited edition in 1922, 1930, 1936, 1962 and twice in 1979 - baught the 1962 version). I'm almost broke, but it was worth every penny!


^ the book contains hundreds of these drawings - most of the houses shown still exist, and you can recognize them very well, though proportions are not always right. Many of them were demolished though - the book even shows a dozen of wooden houses - there are only two wooden houses left in the entire city.

Architect of the building was P.J.H. Cuypers, who also designed the Rijksmuseum and a dozen of churches. I always thought he made the entrance far too small. Quite low, in comparison with the seize of the building. Must have something to do with the Dutch soberness

Today, it's just a mess. Of course there were always trams, buses and people, mainly tourists, filling the square in front of the building. And besides tramps and a barrel organ there was... construction noise...
A few weeks ago they closed the main entrance, because of the metro construction. Big signs saying "Ingang Station" and "Naar de Sporen" direct the passengers to the new, temporary main entrance. I doubt if the Dutch railroad company, the NS, ever heard of tourists, because when I went out to make some pictures, people quite often asked where they could find the bloody hell station entrance... ]]> ~Vanderaap
