I went to AggieCon today. It’s Texas A&M’s annual convention where we celebrate all things gaming and anime related. There’s also an Art Room and an art auction, and yes, some of the pictures have *gasp* NUDITY! For several years the MSC Board (the people in charge of the venue) have been wanting something done about the nudity. Well, this year they finally won. They censored the art room. I’m pissed. I wasn’t alone (Have you ever seen Todd McCaffrey wearing painter's tape in little X's on his shirt over his nipples in protest? I have, it's funny!). It’s a college for crying out loud! Bastion of free thought and expression right? Apparently not. It’s completely out of line with the policies elsewhere in the university. If the library has a 50 year backlog of Playboy in 2 different media (yes! Microfilm and Hardcopy! I work there, I know.) on the second floor then we can have an uncensored art room. The Campus firewall doesn’t filter out pornographic content. Why? Because it isn’t university policy to support censorship! I mean, who are they protecting? It’s a college campus! How many kids are there!?! Yes, there are some parents who bring their (young) children to Con with them. Fine! You put a sign outside that warns of nudity and let the parents deal with their own dang kids! Anyone who goes in that room knows damn well what's in there! I love the art room. Every year great artists come or send it great stuff. Yes, some of these artists are guys. Yes, some of the artwork contains nudity. So? It’s tasteful and it looks better than the garbage that the university buys and displays all over the MSC to “support the arts.” *gags*

Oh and if anybody wants to check out some great fantasy artwork then check out: ~Corbistiger He comes to AggieCon everyyear and he does great stuff. I don't know how much attention he gets on here though... He got a DD and he has about 100 watchers but I have more pageviews than he does (which just shouldn't happen).

Gold is at $850-900/ounce. Nah there's actually more to it than that.

After last semester, I'm finally approved to order my senior ring, my Aggie Ring. You'd have to see the male ring to understand but when the price of gold shoots up the price of the ring shoots up. Gold has gone up a lot. Ordering my ring is going to cost $772 (tax included). You'd have to be an Aggie to understand why it's worth that.

My mother is financially unable to help me with it, at all. I have to pay for it myself and it's going to cost basically every dollar I have available with the rest being needed for... well, food. Money for re-subscribing to this site just isn't going to be in the budget. As if that isn't bad enough, this semester is already starting to look a little rough. I won't get to spend much time here so I'd get no satisfaction from the money. Oh well, such is life.

The last 4 months I've been working on something I've wanted to do for 9 years. I've had to revise the concept of it and my methods since I didn't exactly have it all quite figured out at the age of 11 but it's finally off the ground. This next year will hopefully see much progress in this effort but by it's very nature I'll never be done with it.

At the end of 2006 I have 78 hours of credit. I hope to have the 95 hours needed to order my Senior ring at A&M in September after returning from the summer, at the beginning of my Junior year (I would get the ring in November, after I turn 21 ).

I'm currently working on something new. This may sound silly but I misplaced my composition book. I wasn't able to do anything without that book; not because I wasn't capable of it, I just really wanted my book. I'll start bitmapping tomorrow. I'll probably have it ready by the evening.

I purchased a year set of 1943 Steel pennies since I couldn't get those through circulation and they weren't in the set of wheats I bought. (If you want to know why the 1943's aren't found so easily then look here: [link] ) I then went to the bank, got some pennies, sorted through them, returned the pennies I didn't want and got some more. I did this until I'd sorted through between 4500 and 5000 pennies. At this point, I only lacked 11 pennies to finish a set from 1940 to 2006. Throughout the semester I kept looking through spare change, when I came home for Christmas I was missing 6.

I picked up another 2000 pennies at the bank and sorted through them. I was only missing 4. I picked up another 2500 pennies at the bank. I was missing 3. I picked up another 2500 pennies at the bank today. I'm only missing 1 penny.

I am 1 penny away from having a complete set from 1940 to 2006. I have collected 155 of 156 different circulating varieties; I have searched between 11500 and 12000 pennies; The 1955-S Still escapes me. So what to do now? I could buy the penny easily. I could have it for less than $5. But after all of this that kinda feels like giving up. But what else is there to do? I've searched through all those pennies and I still haven't found it. My chances of finding it are almost zero. But stranger things have happened. In my search I also found a 1910, a 1919-S, and a 1929-S.

So what think all of you out there that actually read all of this? Should I give up or keep looking?

In a community such as this, some guidelines are imposed upon even those with rather loose standards of acceptability. Even so, some images which violate the artistic standards of some still endure inspite of a certain lack of appropriateness.

Spending some time on this sight has reminded me of a discussion in my AP art class a few years ago in which someone asked what the difference was between art and pornography. At the time, still firmly in the fog of my own ignorance, I would have said that art is usually drawn or painted where pornography usually deals with photography. This was an unfair statement. I've subsequently come to the understanding that the division between art and pornography (drawn or photographed) is a difference in intent. The content or the method are irrelevent beyond their use in the communitcation of intent.

Art is meant to communicate thoughts and feelings. So is pornography. However, art seeks to glorify, to convey a sense of beauty and in some cases the divine. Art makes us think. Art demands that we respond to it, each in our own way. Art calls for a response from our higher selves. It calls for logical, ethical and emotional responses.

Does pornography do this? No, of course not. Pornography appeals purely in an animalistic sense. It is purely purient. It is only meant to make us aroused, the very act of which often tends to deminish all logic and reason within us.

I see people on this sight who show anime characters being whipped. People who take disney characters and turn them into something dirty. This twist sense of art should not be. It violates the principles of the profession. This kind of thing isn't sexy; it's sleazy.

I'm not saying that doing one sleazy picture makes someone a bad person or a bad artist, only that this should never be a primary focus of our work as some have chosen to make it.

I've given considerable thought to this and I think we all should. If anyone cares to see what I have chosen as my standard of acceptability you need only to look at my favorites. Any image in there that contains nudity is in there because I felt that it was both tastefully and skillfully executed.

I don't care if everyone draws the line where I have. I just wish everyone would draw a line and stick to it. At the very least I can respect that even if I don't agree with it.
