Its mostly for me to stick up all my lifedrawings and work in progress stuff with the hope that, after time, there'll be some kind of improvement.
I'm really keen for any crits or comments for the WIP stuff, so make sure you visit often!

And hey, Id like encourage everyone, particularly all my good buddies from Freelance, to stick one up so we could get some kind of blog/sketch/community thing going to motivate us all to keep at it!
You know you want to! You know you need to! DO IT!

Hey folks. I'm in a great mood for no particular reason, why not update this 'ol journal.
Im seriously loving lifedrawing at the mo. Twice a week, Stu comes on tuesdays and its always great to shoot the shit with him.
This Thursdays session I ran into my first proper 'arty farty' person. By this I mean, they study art for the sake of learning what art is. You know what I mean, the whole flashing bulb in a blank room thing and calling it art, and hey, to some it may be. But the thing was, she wasnt the least bit interested in learning any skills. I mean just something simple like construction, line work, gesture lines. She pretty much just sat there and doodled the whole session. Going to a lifedrawing session is one thing, but actually pushing yourself there is another.
Ok, so I've been through animation and had all the rules drilled into me. Id never criticise anyone for not knowing any better. But even back when I first started, I hungered to learn more. Constantly reading tutorials and badgering people for tips and so on. I think I scare alot of people when we initially meet just cause my mind flips over too 'omg, this person knows stuff I need!' mode.
So, what erks me I guess, is the simple fact that, she doesnt care! (and I want her to care!)
Does she use it as an excuse for being lazy, or doesn't realise the hard yards you have to go through to get anything.
She saw my stuff, and said, 'oh, you must be an animator, you use all the lines and things.'
She goes to the same school as Stu and had seen his stuff.
Is there some other way to do lifedrawing I don't know about? Where you can can just show up and then use that to cement your position whenever you call yourself an 'artist'.
I mean, its one thing to talk about art, but if you don't do any work its all just wank, right?
That was a bit of a rant I've had in the back of my head for a while. It comes across kinda one sided, but meh, that was my honest gut reaction to it.
Ratatouille came out yesterday, so already got tickets booked for it tonight. Then Yum Cha tomorrow morning and some kinda party tomorrow night with Stu. Yay, beer!
That's me.
I'm going for a run.

Ok, ok, keep your pants on... or not.
Yes, had the interview, finally. I was late getting there. Didn't take into account the school kids on the bus drawing on the seats and the bus driver having to stop every 2 minutes to yell at them. Public transport - yeesh.
So five minutes late and looking my best, I stroll on in.
For anyone who hasnt been into the Weta building - its sweet.
There's a full size Lurtz (from fellowship of the ring) to greet you at reception and tonnes of the weta maquettes everywhere. Was then ushered into a boardroom with more toys to drool over while I waited. Two people walked in and introduced themselves to me, I shook the woman's hand first and went to shake the guys. As I was shaking his hand she introduced him as Greg Broadmore.
My eyes widened, Greg's hand cracked.
"Ow," said Greg.
You can see his stuff here: [link]
I am a big fan of Greg's. NZ is such a small place, I have loved his stuff since I first started seeing it in King Kong.
They went through my portfolio and peppered me with questions about my drawings, how I go about them and all that. It was pretty relaxed and I enjoyed it all up. Greg pretty much threatened to sue me at one point for a bunch of my dinosaurs, saying he'd already done that idea. Haha, fucking awesome guy.
In the end they let me know that, for the moment, they didn't have any positions for concept artists. Just for me to keep doing what I'm doing and Ill be fine.
Sooooo, didnt get to see Richard this time (though he does live just down the road so Ill probably bump into him tomorrow or something), and didnt get a job out of it either. At least my names in there now, so I can get my focus back into doing some more of my own stuff and getting more portfolios ready to send out.
Yee ha.

Met Richard Taylor again the other day. I think hes stalking me.
Armageddon was on and i was running the Borders stall. Id been to get my Pride of Baghdad graphic novel signed by Brian K. Vaughan and swapped sketches with my good buddy
Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) had finally run out of things to talk about and Armageddon was winding down at last, so I decided to go try get some cash out for some last minute purchases. My eftpos card has a big crack in it so all the atm's declined me and no other stalls could get it to read, in the end I just went up to the Weta Workshop stall and tried to buy the triceratops skull from the King Kong series hoping Id luck out and my card would work. It didnt. The pretty girl behind the stall even tried the fabled plastic bag trick. Gutted.
Turns out Richard Taylor had been hanging over my shoulder the whole time; recognised me from our previous random meeting, reached over, grabbed the big box of dinosaur and hands the bloody thing to me! He then scrawls his PERSONAL email on a piece of paper and tells me to send him more of my work!!!!
SQuEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

In other news, life drawing sessions here rock, only $8 for a two hour session and its on twice a week just down the road from where I work.
Working full time recently has been fantastic money wise as Ive been able to buy a new desk for my drawing board and Ill soon be able to upgrade the ram on my comp.

Yup, things down here are goin swell.

Look at me, Im in Wellington! Sitting in a net cafe at the moment while the massive Cuba Street Festival is about to start outside.
The move down was without a hitch, and Ive spent the last week over indulging in far to much computer gaming - its only fair though as I completely deprived myself of it last year.
For the first time in my life (that I can remember) theres no school looming on the new year. And that, my friends, calls for a celebration. Actually, Im all celebrated out. Ive consumed more alcohol in the last two weeks then I have in the entire year. Thats a fact.

And now...

Id like to thank all my classmates, friends and fans (haha). I couldnt have done it without you. Freelance has been great. The tutors rocked my socks and i learnt so much from them. I can animate now, and i have a diploma to prove it. I reackon thats pretty rad.

So Im now officially on holiday. A chilled out part time job at a bookstore to pay the rent and plenty of free time to spend expanding on my portfolio and other random works.

Yay for lazy weekends! Over the past few weeks with my days so full of class work and dinosaurs, I really crave getting out and doing something on my weekends. Last night I went out with some friends and ended up at a friends, sisters, boyfriends place, who then turned out to be Alex Leighton, and ex-graduate from Freelance, and one of the three founders of New Zealand animation company, MukPuddy. Needless to say, him and I had a good chin waggle and so forth. He was doing a mean painting on a canvas. I intend to try some oldschool canvas works myself one of these days. Ive always preferred tradional over digital. And yeah, so I can say I did something this weekend now. Laying in bed listening to the buzz of bandsaws, ahh gravy...

The second entry in my journal. I think I'm starting to get the hang of this.
Lifes been pretty full on for me just lately. I landed a job painting a large amount of warhammer miniatures just recently, and have quite a small time frame to have them done by. Coming up soon, I also have a character design assessment due in a week for school. So naturally, I'm on here, procrastinating.
I just finished tidying up a head shot of a raptor. Dinosaurs have always been an obsession with me. Ever since kindergarten and discovering the mystical 'Corythosaurus.'
Its from drawing dinosaur upon dinosaur that I think I actually gained any artistic ability. I was looking forward to coming to the school I'm at now as I could finally have a reason to learn to draw people. Surprise, surprise, upon arrival everyone else was drawing characters, cartoons and great sketches of people. And here I was, doodling away at dinosaurs, dragons and demons, which was about as humanoid as it got for me.
I have to say I'm quite stoked at how all the life drawing and lessons have helped over the last half year. I can now manage an acceptable drawing of a person without offending any nearby humans. Its like a whole new door of characters, personalities and emotions has opened up to me. I'm no longer restrained by the lipless visage of my lizard friends.
Drawing the raptor tonight was like rediscovering a favourite toy. The thing was, it was better then how I'd left it. It now had perspective, construction and many other things I wasnt really aware of back then.
At this rate, I cant wait to see what I'll be capable of in a years time.

Ahh yes. So could this be the start of something special. Who knows?
Im hoping this will incourage me to produce the goods as I can can be a real lazy artist at times. And heck, thinking of drawing things aint going to help me get any better. So here goes.
I'm going to be posting a few of my past favourite pieces of art then, it'll be time to get stuck in and get something origional out into the light. First off, picture of Hellboy, that I've been promising myself and my good buddy J to get done. Tally ho!
