Back when my brother asked me what characters he should draw for our art trade, I didn't have much to choose from in my gallery. On a whim, I picked my ascii warrior avatar, and surprisingly enough he accepted.

Voice of Levity Says:

I move on to the third round of

along with my brother *Artist-Mage and several other cool artists.
I am of course ridiculously happy.

This marks a couple of landmarks: the second time a written entry of mine has won a contest, and the first time I have won a one-on-one OCT battle.

It has been great fun, and I have improved a lot. And so have the other competitors. Which means when I meet my inevitable downfall, the end result should be truly epic.

It's funny to think how rushed I was entering the tournament. When I asked ~MikazukiYuki if there was still room for me, my character had only existed in her latest incarnation for a very short time. Her name wasn't even a week old! (By the way, names are hard.)

And yet Fedora Tanglechild and co. have been growing more and more developed, fighting their way into a special place in my heart. Let's hear it for those seedy rascals; may they continue to entertain and delight.

In other news, I'm finally giving this "css" thingie a try. I'm not done with the setup, but what do you all think so far?

I lost in

Âs Round One against

, and that was very much for the best. IÂm back in the tournament via the shotgun-round system, and I vastly prefer the new direction the story plot is taking with my latest entries.

Round Two is a two versus two fight, and the final matchup for mine isÂ

That is not a typo. IÂd love to say itÂs because weÂre so awesome that weÂre each worth two people. What actually happened was: we lost the others during the battle. All three of them (we grabbed a replacement halfway through only to have him become a casualty too). It was very sad, but I trust in their reasons and hope the best for them.

Anyways, my Round Two entry is online. If I was someone else, I would totally read it and enjoy it. And then I would read *Artist-MageÂs entries because he is just that good.

In the meantime, I'm going take the path of optimism and make a reference sheet for if I win this round. My characters are going to need it. I'm too cruel to them.

I tried to resist, but I ended up joining the sweeper faction in *Sanguine-OCT. I just had too much fun with my attempts for ~DAWildGuns and Desire, and I feel that I'm learning a lot in these events.

Since I'm never going to reach a day when I have "enough time to do everything", I went ahead and resumed my side projects. My latest submission is a spectator comic for ~DAWildGuns.

A particular meme has been floating around in my journal for over a year now, and I think it's well past time I got it filled up. Basically, ten people volunteer, and I go through their galleries and feature three of their submissions. ~~I need three more people.~~ Edit: Ok, list filled. Now I just need to go through everyone's galleries before posting the feature.

I can't believe I'm experimenting with unfamiliar writing techniques in the middle of a tournament.

It's the last day of Desire's second round, and I'm still far from satisfied. However, to sooth my rampant paranoia, I'm going to go ahead and post what I've got so far. Edits will come later.

's character was fun to write for, and I could easily have gone a lot farther. Unfortunately, my time is limited. Here's hoping I didn't mess things up too badly.

There are times when I have trouble getting anything done. Sometimes itÂs because my inner perfectionist raises standards beyond my ability to fulfill them.

This is, to put it bluntly, ridiculous. IÂm not perfect, I wonÂt be anytime soon, and if I donÂt even try, I wonÂt improve at all. IÂve heard it said that Âanything worth doing is worth doing poorlyÂ, and IÂm certainly not going to let a silly little thing like falling flat on my face stop me from chasing after dreams.

So letÂs see if I canÂt get myself back on my feet and make some more footprints on the world.

- Write ten things about yourself.

IÂm not really into non art-related memes, but this one seems harmless enoughÂ

1.) It burns! Agghhh! Why did I even try this-ÂYeah, IÂve got a nearly compulsive sense of humor. I think everyone in my family has asked if my humor comes with an off switch. IÂll let you know if they find one.

2.) I was born mildly apraxic and aphasic. In other words, IÂve had to work harder to learn the language and motor skills that the typical human takes for granted. Fortunately, IÂve learned to compensate very well; most people donÂt even notice that I move a little slower and that my dialect doesnÂt quite match up with that of any country on Earth.

3.) I read obsessively. To say I love reading is a gross understatement. Let me put it this way: reading isnÂt my anti-drug; itÂs my drug of choice. When books are outlawed, expect to see me getting my daily fix from those people wearing trench coats in dark alleyways. Some of you may even be those people. IÂll pay in cash.

4.) Words have developed a fascination for me. (I blame the reading.) IÂm always amazed at how a with just a few tweaks here and there, a phrase can change so much in connotative and emotional effect and yet still retain the same meaning. Ironically, this makes writing even harder for me because IÂm always playing around with different ways of wording the same things.

5.) IÂm an optimist. This is not to say that I expect everything to be all rainbows and sunshine. Rather, I know that there is an amazingly good plan; that I fit into it; and that even if IÂm broken and disfigured in the process, I can still experience good things and make good things happen. ItÂs not the softest or prettiest sense of optimism in the world, but itÂs mine, and it brings me a great deal of comfort.

6.) Related to the preceding fact, IÂm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints. You may know us as Mormons. Feel free to ask questions. IÂll be happy to answer.

7.) IÂm creative and good at adapting old skills to new challenges. This lends very well to improvisation, the procrastinatorÂs best friend. It also makes me look smarter, and who doesnÂt like that?

8.) I have a long and regrettable history of laziness and of giving up when things are hard. Among other things, IÂve given up on learning to whistle, snap my fingers, juggle, type, or draw.

9.) I have a more recent history of patience and of knowing that some results are hidden until later. I can now whistle simple tunes, snap with both hands, juggle three balls, type 50 words per minute, and IÂll let you judge my drawing efforts for yourself.

10.) I enjoy the sound of my own voice. In my defense, IÂve been told that I have a lovely voice. Of course, this was mainly by choir conductors trying to get me to sing a bit louder.

Every now and then, I feel the urge to wax poetic. Normally, I try to restrain such urges because I figure I'll just embarrass myself. However, having received positive feedback the two times I've succumbed to temptation on dA, I decided to make another go at it. I wrote a poem to go in the comments of my Pixel ID

In fact, I ended up writing three poems to choose from. I selected I am More than Numbers for the ID itself. Since the other two aren't half bad, I'm posting Riddle Me and Tougher Neighborhood in my gallery as my first official submissions to the poetry category.

In the course of my face-drawing research, I've been impressed by -SD- Just Holla That and Fun with Facial Expressions, both of which I'm adding to my favorites gallery. The later in particular is excellent for anyone who needs a better understanding of facial expression.

Now, color and I are not on the best of terms. I'm not sure why. Maybe I accidentally killed color's parents. Maybe it was the burning of color's village. The name calling probably didn't help either. Regardless, I've resolved to make amends and build new bridges. Who knows? It might be the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Filling up one's first sketchbook is a great feeling, and I heartily recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried yet. Looking through and see what's changed and what hasn't, reading the comments I wrote for each sketch or doodle, showing off select pages to hapless victims--fun stuff

EDIT: Figured it was about time I made an avatar of my own. Scanned a doodle from my older sketchbook, inverted the color, and shrank it to 50x50.

Ok, here's the deal: I've been feeling a little less of that artistic mojo flowing through me for over a week now. I'm sure it'll return at a later time (it always does), but until then I'm going to take it easy on the frequency of my posts. I may even temporarily go back to the OOTS inspired style for my comics.

I am NOT giving up on the comics altogether. The amount of progress I've made between Infiltration Armor (the first comic I posted) and Plan of Attack (the most recent 'real' comic) is self-evident and proof of the benefits this project brings me.

On a related note, since I can't seem to get Infiltration Armor or Playground to show up in my gallery, I'm resubmitting them as soon as I copy the comments (my precious treasures!) and dig up the original files.

She caught me holding pencils and pens in a death grip and helped me overcome this. These days, I hold them fairly lightly. Thanks to her, I can still enjoy drawing, even when my RSI decided to stop me from participating in the 50,000 word novel challenge for this month.

Step 1: Relax.

*Takes a deep calming breath.*
*Takes a few more.*
*Starts hyperventilating!*
*Obtains one of those brown paper bags.*
*Stabilizes.*
*Gets something to eat.*

Step 2: Look at the competition.

There weren't that many of us, and I'd like to think I made at least the top three. Based on the amount of laughter and commentary over the public channels, I suspect my two primary rivals are ~neander and Torso.Their work clearly demonstrates a greater degree of experience and skill and even comes in color...and they complain about the quality of their work!

I have plenty of comic ideas that may enter the online world, and if I win, I plan to focus on familiarizing myself with the wonders of digital art. I have no idea when the voting will occur or even whether it'll be called off due to lack of participation.

Until then, I'll move on to...

Step 3: Get back to my other projects.

It's not that I haven't been drawing and writing; it's that I've been focusing more on the comics than on making other things worthy of deviation status. I figure it's time to change that for a while.

I don't expect to win single-handedly, but maybe I'll be a funny enough writer to help a real artist. We'll see how that works out.

Edit: Went and looked up the original information about the contest. Posting it here:

"After grousing about my dissatisfaction with Keenspot and their lazy artists who can't be bothered to log into the game when we pay them to do it, the wizzes Rine, Zvezda, and Torso came up with a good idea: have the players do it.

So that's what we're gonna do. Starting today, you have until the end of July to create a webcomic about RetroMUD online. If you'd like to team up as a group to create the comic, that's fine too.

Post the URLs to your webcomics to the RP news group.

At the end of July, we will have a vote online, and whoever gets the most votes wins 50 RPP, to be divided up amongst the winners as they see fit (if more than one).

The idea is to create an ongong webcomic. You should consider it a longterm commitment that will hopefully earn you accolades from across the Internet and RetroMUD. It should also highlight a wide swath of what makes Retro great, and not be so "in-jokey" or irrelevant that the comic is actually detrimental. Or to put it another way, please don't invent new races, add copyrighted characters from other licensed works, etc. to the webcomic. Keep it about Retro.

When I first met Ombre online, I had no idea said person had an art site. All I knew was that this cultist could bring my RetroMUD character back to life in exchange for my soul. Imagine my surprise when months later I discover Ombre's double life as ~glaftilikanenswegnur, deviant artist!

Hello Kitty eats your soul - Of all the hello kitty variants I've seen, this is definitely my favorite. Cutest little servant of a soul-sucking sword I've ever seen.
weird coloring - With skill and technique, even a mundane activity can become a piece of art.
Line-arrt - This pirate is cool enough to give even ninjas a run for their money.

Im not actually a shoulder angel, but it definitely tops my list of Jobs Id Accept in a Heartbeat, right above mad scientist and narrator. In preparation, Ive developed responses to various dilemmas. For example:

Child: I found a dollar on the floor. What should I do?
Voice: Quick, before its too late! Draw a smile on George Washington! Its the only way!

My wonderful brother Artist-Mage is planning on the possible production of a webcomic and has asked me to contribute script ideas. Not sure how itll turn out, but Im expecting funny experiences for all involved. ^ ^

Todays favorite is, appropriately enough, a comic. While its about another artists relationship with her father, it also depicts several lifelong aspects of my relationship with my parents. Regardless, I hope its at least worth a laugh.

Random scientific fact: hippos are aggressive animals and are responsible for a *large* number of lethal animal attacks on humans. For some reason, schools and cartoons never teach thisI wouldnt know either if not for my extra-curricular reading. Kids (of all ages), treat hippos with respect and caution; stay away!

I was pleasantly surprised by the positive feedback from two of the people who read my short story, Playground. Thank you! I've decided to keep writing and submitting short stories and am already working on the concept for my next one, which should be out sometime next month.
