For the past six years there have been numerous conventions on anime, gaming and comics. Since that time the comic industry in our country breathed life again. Many have published, lived and failed…but never lost hope. Here's the event that aims to bring together a great company of artists and celebrate this great art form called KOMIKS!



KOMIKON 2005 will be held at the UP Diliman's Bahay ng Alumni on October 22, 2005.

It will showcase the creations of Filipino artists from various genres and themes and give tribute to the creators and their creations. The 1st Philippine Komiks Convention aims to bring together different comic book artists/groups and publishers in a venue where they could present their talents, works and services to the public. Most importantly, it aims to give a break to aspiring comic artists. It would like to provide the venue for different art groups and different generations of artists for a free exchange of ideas. Hopefully it would lead to a transcending of stereotypes and broaden the scope of comics – from local to international to cross-cultural, sequential to strips, amateur to professional and traditional publication to independent comics publishing. This event will give people the awareness of the exciting state of contemporary Philippine comics industry.



Contests like the Independent Comic Book Contest, On the Spot Comic Strip Making and the Original Character Making Contest hopes to bring out the next generation of Comic Book creators to the fore front. Our Special Guests, comic book superstars from the past and present, both coming from the local and international fields will be available for questions and will be present to provide insights about the industry through their experiences. Various fun-filled activities will also be provided by our exhibitors through their respective booths.



Taking the cue from the film industry that regularly take time to award meritorious films and give accolades to their worthy creators, the Komikon Committee will open the nominations for the planned annual Komikon Awards in this event for the following year. The Komikon Awards will give the opportunity for readers, creators, publishers and retailers to nominate and vote for the best in the industry, both local and international. The Awards will not be typical; it will follow the non-traditional MTV way of giving awards, with categories such as Best Line, Best Action Scene, Best Romantic Scene, etc. The awards aim to encourage solidarity within the industry to produce quality local books and promote wider readership in the market.



This event is organized by The Artists' Den and UP Graphic Arts in Literature (GRAIL).



The UP GRAIL is a non-sectarian, non-partisan and non-political literary organization that aims to promote graphic literature as a serious literary form. The group believes that certain "comic books" or "graphic novels" can be considered as serious literary forms and that these are reflections of the society's social, political and cultural context. Their aim is to initiate and actively participate in all activities that would involve the promotion of graphic literature as a serious literary form.



The Artists' Den, on the other hand, has a long-term commitment to help art groups grow, to promote goodwill among fellow Comic Creators and support different works and activities among appreciative audiences. The organization had been witness to the ups and downs of the comic industry as members themselves are mixed up in it. The group has actively participated in the past conventions and now would like to have a convention that focuses on comics alone.

Not so long ago, in a galaxy far away. Lord Sidious the dreaded leader of the Sith himself, master of the dark force sensed a disturbance, an imbalance in the force. He sensed a great power coming from a far off galaxy, namely the Milky Way, and a planet called Earth. He sensed a being of immense power, a power that dwarfs even his own. Unfortunately this power is uncontrolled, untapped and waiting to be reaped. He sends forth his greatest Sith master, Darth Vader to pursue and bring this powerful being from earth. Unbeknownst to the empire, Junior has already learned somehow to control some his incredible power due to certain events on his life. Now Vader accompanied with a battalion of empire warships and star cruisers surrounded the earth and made junior surrender. Now junior somehow knew that even his incredible power cannot match the so many ships surrounding earth and if he battles them all, he knows that some blasts with escape his path and hit earth. Which means his arrogance will not pay off this time, so he surrenders. Thus sparing the earth from destruction and total annihilation of its inhabitants. But when he reached the cockpit of lord Vader’s ship he was surprised to see a welcoming party for him, full of music and storm troopers welcoming him. and of course wimmens. those gorgeous, beautiful wimmens of all colors, reds, blues and purples. Lord Vader now realized junior's great weakness and immediately contacted lord Sidious of this great discovery. Lord Vader was pleased with junior's cooperation. Vader then told junior about his untapped power and how he can master all of this so he could control that power thus become more powerful. Lord Sidious was then pleased. After a couple of days of venturing into wormholes, they arrived in the empire capital itself. Junior accompanied by Darth Vader arrived to the colossal building where lord Sidious resides. Then at last lord Sidious and junior came face to face. Junior was not pleased of what he saw, a hideous face hooded as if shamed. But junior also sensed Lord Sidious' great power and knew that this is a man who has a lot of experience and ruler of an empire is indeed a person to be respected. and junior on this point was really looking for a mentor or someone who can teach him to harness his power. Junior was in the side of good, but due to his personality and a high spirited lifestyle, he is vulnerable to corruption. And he doesn’t have still, the right constitution to know or sense evil things. Dark Sidious told junior that he needed a powerful ally to combat a very large group of droids who are attacking the outer rim of the Milky Way, which unknown to junior, Darth Sidious dispatched his out of commissioned droids and put them in a strategic position so as to bait junior to joining the dark side. Because of his good nature and big heart, junior agreed to help Sidious and wipe out all of the droid forces that are in the outer rim of the Milky Way. And junior's payment is the knowledge of mastering his power... and thus is corrupted, like Vader himself, seduced and became one with the dark side of the force. After months of painstakingly taking apart each one of the droid armies in the outer rim, junior went off to where the empire is and reported to lord Sidious that he is successful in eliminating the enemy. Lord Sidious was pleased, very pleased with junior. Though in the corner, Darth Vader’s jealousy grew more and more because of Sidious' sudden appeal to this young and arrogant child from earth. He told himself that this earthling cannot undermine his mastery of the force, specially the dark side. he knew that someday they will come to blows and after the smoke clears, he will step on the carcass of junior, victorious and master once more of the force. now, Sidious plan is going perfectly smooth and he then trains his young apprentice to the dark side, although he doesn’t give hints to junior of his evil plan to turn him into a Sith lord .thus he trains him first to the basics of the force. And thought him how to concentrate and use his power well. Because unknown to all, that junior's power is unlike the others he has trained, he must give him some knowledge of the force so as to bring forth junior's true and natural power within him. And then after that he can now corrupt the young man. After long and steady months of training, junior has now mastered the way of the force. Now its time of him to be turned. Sidious plans another one of his wicked schemes and tell junior of a great and evil disturbance from one of the separatist's planet. The planet Ihqua is a planet where foliage and fertile vegetation grows aplenty and where a beautiful and fairylike species of creatures live.
