Was at the Chicago Comic Con this weekend, and let me tell you it was a pretty awesome experience for me, and I'm sure it was for many other BSG fans as well. I don't think I once walked by his booth and he wasn't there signing autographs and talking to fans. The only time I saw him away from it was he ate lunch two days at about the same time that I did in the cafeteria area. But anyways, onto my story.

To get an autograph from him would have been 50 bucks, and I don't have that kind of money for a signature. So Friday I just said hi and talked to him for a couple minutes, and he was pretty enthusiastic about the show and talking to fans. So that gave me an idea. When I got home that night I drew this deviation, which took me about 4-5 hours.

The next day in the morning I talked to him again. I took out the drawing and asked if he would be willing to trade my drawing for an autograph. He said it was beautiful then asked which photo I wanted signed. It was pretty awesome to say the least. So I got to talk to Edward James Olmos...frakking Admiral Adama! And get his autograph. It was a pretty cool highlight to a good weekend, even if some other parts of the con were disappointing.

I don't care...I'm tired of hearing about it. Another game where you play a soldier running around in first person shooting other soldiers...Didn't I play this 2 years ago? Haven't I played this every year since Doom? I'm sure it'll be a fantastic game...for people who love games where they just run around in first person as a soldier shooting other soldiers, or shooting other people pretending to be soldiers. Here's a list of other games coming out that sound so much better than another Call of Duty. You do realize this is number 6 don't you? DON'T YOU?!?!?! The "2" in Modern Warfare is just trying to trick you. Oh, and I don't need a crappy $90 set of night vision goggles, and neither do thousands of retarded gamers. I can't wait to hear some of the bad news stories that will come out of that one. (Driving with Night Vision and no headlights anyone?) Anyway, the list, accompanied by Game Trailers links and my short sum up:

1. Scribblenauts (DS) If you can write it, you can use it. Solve the games puzzles by spawning in any of over ten-thousand items to use (beavers, ladders, chainsaws, trampolines, balloons, fans...)

[link]

2. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3) Best looking game coming out. Its like Tomb Raider but better in every way. It even has a more likeable character (yes, I'm aware he doesn't have boobs.) The first one had fantastic environments, puzzles, gunplay, characters, voice acting, and a good story, this one will be like it, but better.

[link]

3. Assassin's Creed 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC) Ok yeah, I'm tired of everything being sequels too, but this is only number 2, not 6. And it takes place during the Renaissance! Thats cool! Other eras of time besides WWII and the 2000s existed? Amazing. Speaking of amazing, this game looks it. And if they can take care of the repetitive nature of a lot of the first game, it will play amazing as well.

[link]

4. Brutal Legend (Xbox 360, PS3) The genius of Tim Schaefer combines with the comedy of Jack Black in a game where you play as an ax yielding roadie fighting darkness with the POWER OF ROCK! You can finally use rock the way it was always intended, to destroy! For good or for awesome. I don't think there will be much comedy in COD:MW2, an area which most games are severely lacking.

[link]

5. Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3, Xbox 360) Its Batman kicking ass and doing the detective thing while trapped in Arkham. You really need to know more?

[link]

There, five games that will be awesome, aren't first person shooters, and don't even have COD in front of them. I didn't even mention the stuff that will come out in 2010 (Last Guardian anyone?) And I was able to avoid other sequels that went past the number 2. Why is it that 90% of gamers in the U.S. still only play FPS and Madden?

Wow! Look I just submitted actual 3D models. You mean it wasn't created using "Poser?" That must be why it doesn't look like a bunch of 3D crap just thrown together and called "art." Yes, in fact 3D models can actually be built AND textured in one of dozens of 3D programs.

I may not be the best 3D modeler, in fact there are a lot of people way more impressive than me, but I find it damned offensive people who use programs like poser and call it art. If you're creating the poser assets yourself, fine, but I don't see why anyone with real 3D capabilities would continue using a program like that with such aptly a named title.

This is why I get mad. It takes a long time to make good 3D art, just as it takes time to make quality 2D art. People throwing crap together in a scene in poser is akin to someone throwing other artists 2D work together in photoshop and calling it their own. Inking and coloring another artists work with permission is different. You're putting your own personal touch on a piece of work that you like by and respect. I don't understand how someone could be proud of their "artwork" if its just other peoples assets put together in poser with some poorly done lighting added in. And the other thing is, everything in poser looks EXACTLY THE SAME. I can look through deviant art and pull a poser image out of hundreds of deviations looking at just the thumbnails. All the characters have the same retarded faces and all the scenes have the same bad lighting.

Poser work doesn't belong on deviant art and it sure as hell doesn't deserve daily deviations. A turd no matter how polished is still just a shiny turd, or something to that effect.

Poser is a slap in the face to people who try to model and texture their own 3D work. It makes other people think 3D is easy, and because of this it lessens their opinion of 3D work as an art form. I have more respect for the person who spends an hour trying to learn 3D max, Maya, SketchUp, or any other 3D modeling program than the person who just continues to be a pretender with Poser.

Whereas after a hard day's toil, instead of relaxing with a book they'll be much more likely to sit down in front of an undemanding soap opera because this is obviously teaching them nothing, so it is not learning, so it is not work, it is not drudgery, so it must be pleasure. And I think that that is the kind of circuitry that we tend to have imprinted on us because of the education process."

I've ranted on this before but its something that always bugs me every now and again on DA. It feels like the value of a person's opinion is equal to the number of pageviews they have. For a lot of artists I'm sure that's not true, but it is still the overall aura I get when reading people's journals and talking to other artists. I understand that pageviews generally coincide with the quality of ones art. But just because my gallery pales(right word?) in comparison to others, doesn't mean my intellectual or artistic knowledge is worthless. Ok if you're on DA and your 13 years old and say something stupid about my work I'm probably not going to listen to you. But I'm 23 years old with a college education! Granted I put up a lot of stupid journals but whenever I write a long one its like I'm talking to myself and just arranging my thoughts. An example of how my brain works.

Heres what happens:

-Good artist uploads a piece of art
-I leave a comment praising it with a minor critique
-If they read my comment they visit my DA page
-They say in their head "his work sucks/he only has 9 thousand page views, what does he know?"
-They either A. don't reply (which is fine sometimes because they get really busy
)
-Or they B. reply to my comment discarding it as useless babble from an inferior species
-Should I try to defend myself I just get another example of option A. or B.

See, I feel that if I had more pageviews or "better" artwork, I probably wouldn't get the same response. Or I might get a response had I not gotten one before. The other example is a popular artist writes a journal thats a bunch of stupid shit and everyone agrees. And If I disagree then A. I get flamed(proper usage?) by the artist or B. I get flamed by the artists fanboys.

So whats the point of this journal? Just makes me sad that this is how it has to be, that DA only really works for me on a very small scale. That I only really feel comfortable talking to the people I know. Its not very community like. Isn't it supposed to be?

Sometimes DA...I just don't feel the love.

From GamePolitics.com:

"A researcher at Texas A&M International University has concluded that there is "no significant relationship" between school shootings and playing violent video games.

Writing for the Journal of Investigative Psychology and Offender Profiling, Prof. Christopher Ferguson criticizes the methodology used in earlier research linking games to violence and aggression. He also points out that no evidence of violent game play was found in recent high-profile incidents such as the Virginia Tech massacre, the Utah Trolley Stop mall shooting and the February, 2008 shooting on the campus of Northern Illinois University.

Ferguson examines the notion of "moral panic" as it relates to the supposed relationship between violent video games and school shootings:

Moral panics may emerge from ‘culture wars’ occurring in a society... politicians, news media and social scientists, arguably [have] motives for promoting hysterical beliefs about media violence, and video games specifically. Actual causes of violent crime, such as family environment, genetics, poverty, and inequality, are oftentimes difficult, controversial, and intractable problems. By contrast, video games present something of a ‘straw man’ by which politicians can create an appearance of taking action against crime...

As for the news media, it has long been recognised that negative news... ‘sell’ better than do positive news... As for social scientists, it has been observed that a small group of researchers have been most vocal in promoting the anti-game message... oftentimes ignoring research from other researchers, or failing to disclose problems with their own research...

Ferguson, who cites GamePolitics among his numerous sources, notes that many video game critics are unfamiliar with the medium:

It has been the observation of this author, for instance, that the majority of individuals critical of video games are above the age of 35 (many are elderly) and oftentimes admit to not having directly experienced the games. Some commentators make claims betraying their unfamiliarity, such as that games like Grant Theft Auto ‘award points’ for antisocial behaviour... despite that few games award points for anything anymore, instead focusing on stories.

By way of illustration, Ferguson makes reference to last year's well-known Cooper Lawrence/Mass Effect incident:

In one recent unfortunate incident, the psychologist Cooper Lawrence discussed the video game Mass Effect on Fox News and compared some scenes in the game to pornography... It quickly was revealed that Dr Lawrence had not actually played the game, and ultimately recanted her statements...

Ferguson points out what he sees as design flaws in a number of studies relating to video games and aggression. He also examines school shooting research conducted by the FBI and Secret Service before concluding:

School shootings, although exceedingly rare, are an important issue worthy of serious consideration. However, for our understanding of this phenomenon to progress, we must move past the moral panic on video games and other media and take a hard look at the real causes of serious aggression and violence...

the wealth of evidence... fails to establish a link between violent video games and violent crimes, including school shootings. The link has not merely been unproven; I argue that the wealth of available data simply weighs against any causal relationship."

My two cents:

So shut up media and stupid people who listen to them!

From The Entertainment Consumers Association:

"Recently, Rep. Joe Baca (D CA-43) introduced H.R. 231. This bill, if passed, would require a warning label be affixed to all games rated T or up by the ESRB, regardless of the content descriptors. The warning would read: `WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior.'. The ECA needs your help to make sure this bill does not become law.

Congress is simply misinformed on this issue. The vast majority of studies show that there is no proven causal link between violent media of any type and aggressive behavior. Several studies suggest that playing video games can be helpful to young people, such as this study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project. Further, the bill requires the label even for games that are not rated T or above for violence, which could confuse parents and undermine the ESRB, which according to the FTC is the most enforced media retail system.

HR 231 is an unconstitutional restraint on speech that will harm consumers and parents alike. Please join with the ECA, and let your representatives know that you want them to let the industry and parents continue with a system that works, and have Congress stay focused on the real problems facing our nation."

You can write your member of Congress at, [link]

My two cents:

I believe gamers and parents have the right to choose what games they play and what their children play. This message on retail packaging would liken games to cigarettes as a potential health hazard, a hazard which simply does not exist. The video game violence issue is just a fabrication of misinformed and fear mongering media. This warning label would only stand to confuse buyers and parents and cause unnecessary damage to the game industry as a whole, both consumers and developers.

The TinEye search engine allows users to search by uploading a picture rather than typing in a keyword. It then conducts a pixel by pixel search across the internet, flagging up all instances of that image even if it's been cropped, merged or digitally altered in some way. It's not just for copyright enforcement though, "it's being used by researchers who need to find where an image came from to provide attribution, even people who are trying to find out who people are in old photos." It's currently in beta, but you can try it out."

Original article:

[link]

Search engine:

[link]

The article mentions photographs but i'm sure it could probably be used for artwork as well.

________________________________________________

Its funny when a spanish speaking anime forum uses your venom/naruto image, scroll about halfway down

[link]

So I picked it up for my DS kind of as an impulse buy. I was at walmart and they had it at the electronics checkout so I got it. I like guitar hero and rock band on my 360 so I figured what the hell. Its actually pretty fun. I tried my first song on easy because I wasn't sure how the console skills would translate and it was kind of really boring. So the next song I jumped in on hard and it was a lot more fun. My "strumming" arm is cramping a bit so I need to devise a playing method that stretches my arm out more. Hopefully I unlock the Bloc Party song soon, because honestly reading that on the back of the box is what sold me. I was like...80% going to get it and then that added the extra 20.

Oh and, if you get it, use some headphones, because the DS sound sucks without them.

Side note:

Oh, also I'm selling like 40 games on ebay to earn some cash for Wizard World Chicago this weekend. This isn't my personal collection, I wouldn't want people thinking I actually played "true crime." They're mostly used PS2 and Xbox games but there are some new ones as well. I'll give 20% off on shipping to any DA member who is interested, just send an invoice request or message on ebay letting me know your from here. There is also a Michael Turner Wizard hardcover book I'm selling.
I thought I would share some recommendations for music. I typically listen to alternative, rock, indie, and electronic music but I'm not restricted to any genre.

Lately I've really been into British indie music. I enjoy unique voices, smart lyrics and subject matter, and the use of I guess, atypical instruments. I love when bands use stuff besides the typical guitar, bass and drums. This means, pianos, violins, trumpets, trombones, synthesizers, whatever gives the music a new flavor. Heres some recommendations of some new stuff I've been digging that you probably haven't heard of:

Artist: The National
Album: Boxer
You might also like: Interpol, Wilco
Why I like it: A unique baratone lead singer that is both melancholic and melodic
Recommended Songs: Fake Empire, Apartment Story
Their biography on last.fm: [link]

Artist: Arcade Fire
Album: Neon Bible
You might also like: Radiohead
Why I like it: Orchestral rock, unique sound, singer and melodic
Recommended Songs: Black Mirror, Keep the Car Running
Their last.fm bio: [link]

Artist: The Cinematics
Album: A strange education
You might also like: The Editors, Interpol
Why I like it: Indie Brit rock
Recommended Songs: Break, A Strange Education
Their last.fm bio: [link]

Artist: Maps
Album: We Can Create
You might also like: Can't think of anyone to compare 'em to
Why I like it: Great to chill out to
Recommended Songs: So Low So High, It Will Find You
Their last.fm bio: [link]

My top 5 artists/albums right now:

1. Hard-Fi / Once Upon a Time in the West
2. Bloc Party / A Weekend in the City
3. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones / Lets Face It
4. Editors / An End has a Start
5. Sometimes I just go to browse through the "newest deviations" and 90% of it are peoples crappy NON ARTISTIC photos. I don't want to look at your emo picture of yourself holding the camera.
***SPOILER ALERT***

I don't understand how people can hate this movie. Yes it had CG monkeys and vine swinging, yes it had aliens, yes it had a nuclear blast survival in a refrigerator. Is this so different than any other Indy film? Maybe George Lucas threw too much of his ideas into some of the scenes but as a hole its still a good movie. Its not on par some of the other Indiana Jones films but it was adventurous, humorous, and entertaining. Stop comparing it to other Indy movies and judge it on its own merits. If you can believe a man in a metal suit can survive getting shot by a tank, you can believe a man in a fridge surviving a nuclear blast. And that fridge was lead, for those without keen eyesight. Its a good movie, quit your bitching. There are many worse ways you could spend 10 bucks. Now for a list.

Ten things under $10 bucks you could have done instead of see Indiana Jones 4:

1. Getting herpes from a $10 hooker

2. Watch the Tomb Raider movies

3. Having to see "What Happens in Vegas" because you told your girlfriend you heard Indy 4 "sucks"

4. Buying and watching the Phantom Menace on DVD, Jar Jar Binks anyone?

5. Renting any Tom Cruise movie

6. Going to see "Postal" because you already watched "What Happens in Vegas" and you need something to wash the stupid out of your head but you refuse to see Indy still because it "sucks"

7. Reading journals by 14 year olds on DA who say Indy 4 sucks, even though they've only seen Temple of Doom and parts of Raiders and the Last Crusade on TV and never really liked them in the first place. They also think Sahara and National Treasure are waaaaay better.

8. Daydreaming about how great Michael Meyers is and how you can't wait for the awesomeness that is "The Love Guru"

9. Go out to eat to any one of a number of fine dining establishments such as: McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, White Castle, or Taco Bell. But you better go alone because $10 still won't buy you enough for 2.

10. Play Dungeons & Dragons with your buddies who also agree that Lord of the Rings is an infinitely better movie Trilogy than Indiana Jones or Star Wars.

I Hate, Hate, HATE persuasive films. I hate the people who make them, I hate the people post their stupid journals about them, and I especially hate the ignorance of most people who just flat out believe them.

Watching a persuasive video is so stupid, because 90% of what you are going to watch is because you want to believe what they already have to say. Heres an explanation.

Substitute any of the following choices for A. and B.

"I think (A.) is (B.) so I'm going to watch this movie on why (A.) is (B.) and it will reinforce what I already think."

Popular Choices For A.:

1. The September 11th Attacks were planned by the U.S Gov't

2. The moon landing was fake

3. Global Warming

4. Video Games Cause Violent Behavior

Possible Choices for B.

1. True

2. False

3. Bullshit

Do you see what I did there? Watching persuasive films only makes you think you are learning something new.

"I feel smarter because I watched this movie on why video games make kids kill each other. I already new kids kill each other because of video games before I watched it, but now I can tell others why."

Anyway, I'm tired of peoples stupid journals on DA. "Hey check out this video on why Global Warming is natural and An Inconvenient Truth is a lie, I always new it was a bunch of BS and now you should know too" So you watched a movie that is going to reinforce you're already held beliefs? Why don't you do your own research and figure out the answers for yourself. Watch An Inconvenient Truth, watch that other one that says its BS, and then do some research and form your own opinions.

"Holy Shit you want me to learn something? I thought I was done learning when I dropped out of high school."

Research doesn't mean looking on wikipedia and reading some dumb asses blog. Its called reading peer reviewed articles and books by experts on the subject matter. Read some news articles even. Don't just believe what the assholes who made their persuasive film want you to believe. Its so stupid. They aren't documentaries, they aren't all facts, they are so filled with opinions and each "experts" individual thoughts that your are lead to believe what they want you to believe. The media presents guys like Jack Thompson and Dave Grossman as "experts on game violence" but I don't believe a word those guys say. Why? Because they have an agenda, like every persuasive movie ever made.

Don't trust the opinions of others or the "facts" presented to you. Go to the source.

With the aftermath of Gertsmann Gate theres only one site I trust for unbiased reviews and thats GameRevolution. I mean WOW the OFFICIAL XBOX magazine gave it a 10? I just can't believe that they would hype a product that is going to sell software and hardware for them like crazy.

And IGN had that "exclusive first review." What a surprise that an exclusive first review gets a perfect score. $$$$$.

Screw GTA. I could be a normal loser in a normal city in real life. Games are supposed to be fantasy, I don't want to be some a-hole driving a car with a gun around a city that I could go to 30 min from my house and have way more fun in than playing Grand Theft Auto. If I want an open world experience I'll stick to Oblivion.

I've decided to start doing commissions for Marvel Legends Custom action figures. I'm not sure if anybody cares but if you happen to stumble across my page heres the rates and the breakdown. Figures are typically going to cost around $50.00, could be more or less. Heres what you are paying for

1. Base Figure(s) ($5 - $10 Each)
2. Paint ($1.00 - $2.00)
3. Apoxie Sculpt ($1.00 - $2.00)
4. Time - $15.00 an hour, usually takes 3+ hours a figure

This is a pretty good deal for some nice looking customs, especially considering figures can go for upwards of $100 on eBay. Check out my gallery for some examples of my work.

If you would like to commission a figure just send me a note.

Try working in a real 3D program. All the poser artists are up in arms rushing to Blade68s defense because I said poser shit isn't real art. Even Moonbeam, the "director of artist relations" attacked me. Whatever. Poser is for hacks. I've never sworn so much in a journal but I'm pissed. I think anyone who does real 3D art for themselves or for a career would agree that using poser for your so called "art" is a cop out. Its not real art if you didn't create the 3d models and textures your using. Anyone with half a brain can arrange objects in a scene to look halfway decent. Its not that hard to dress pre-made characters with pre-made clothes either. Try modeling and rigging your own character. How can you have pride in your own work when all your doing is throwing shit together. Its like using someones 2D flash character generator and calling the costume you "created" your own. Or using the city of heroes character creator and calling the character "original."

I think I want to make a webpage called poserART for all the fake 3D artists.

"Where pretenders and wannabes come together!"

UPDATE:

I censored the swearing so I sound less asshole, because I'm not, was just pissed.

UPDATE 2: After reading it...wow, I do sound like a dick.

People need to stop fucking blaming games for real world violence! It is ridiculous. Jack Thompson needs to shut the hell up because he has no idea what he's talking about, Fox news needs to shut up because its not news, its exaggerations and flat out lies made to scare adults and old people.

"The bottom line at NIU, as at Virginia Tech, is that the shooter was a heavily-armed, deranged, homicidal adult. No video game rating system, no amount of retail enforcement of same, could have kept him from playing Counter-strike. No video game law - even if it were somehow constitutional - would have blocked him from buying Counter-strike or any other M-rated game. That’s because such legislation typically seeks to prevent under-18’s from purchasing violent games." [link]

From ECA (Entertainment Consumers Association) President Hal Halpin:

"We’d like to extend our condolences to the families, friends and classmates of those who were affected in the school shooting at Northern Illinois University.

Separately, we are disgusted, but no longer shocked, to find that anti-game activists are again rushing to conclusions about what drove Stephen Kazmierczak, the clearly disturbed 27-year-old who police say was responsible for this tragedy, to commit such an act.

Blaming video games for the behavior of the mentally-challenged is vile on many levels. And, as Generations X and Y mature, it is extremely likely that just about all of us have played at least one video game at some point in our lives.

Drawing a parallel between games and violence without any substantive proof is sensationalism for its own sake. This is a sad event, made worse by the irresponsible actions of attention-seekers and the media that has given them a platform for their reckless venom."
