Heh, an update just to say I'm alive :nirvana:

What can I say? I've done pretty much nothing DA related, and if that's cool with you guys that's cool with me. I've been doing things that have not been computer related, and I've been liking it that way. Plus, I haven't had many opportunities to spend time with many cats, and the cats that I did see I just spent time without trying to get a photo. I missed doing that :(

One of the big things though, has been trying to keep my Little Retard happy. He's been excited that I've been home for a few days, and he won't leave me alone. Not that I mind it terribly much, mind you :)

Speaking of the 'tard, he FINALLY noticed that there is life in the fish tank. For my birthday =KaiserFlames' boyfriend and my very good friend Pete got me an otocinclus catfish for my birthday. So enamored by the little fella, I promptly went out and bought three more :D


Now I just need to find a way to get Rennac to stop scaring them :P

O yea, I made a painting; I gotta wait for a good bright day to take a photo of it. People seem to like it? It'll probably go about as well as my other sad attempts at art, but at least it's of a cat this time.

Other than that, though, nothing is really new. School semester is out, so after a few days of sleeping in 'till 2 PM, I'm sure I'll be out and about to hunt cats with my free time. That is, if I'm not zoning out on the ottos :clap:

There are times in life when an 'ordinary' thing completely transcends the ordinary; This, is one of those moments.


Coming back to Pete's house from getting plants and cherry shrimp for the aquarium, I decided to do my customary search for ICEMAN; and to be honest, that usually involves me going two houses down and seeing him on the infamous green AstroTurf porch, either sleeping or eating or generally doing ICEMAN things, which involves glowering grumpily. Typically ICEMAN isn't all there in the head, nice as he is.

Well, on that Friday ICEMAN was not there, but =KaiserFlames was able to spot him across the street in a blue cat hut chillin' with Mr. Cat. Happily I went over to see the two reclusive Reading strays, in which ICEMAN promptly fled across the street in terror back to his usual spot; Mr. Cat was nice enough to let me pet him for a bit. He sure is a handsome fellow, and I gave him the attention he deserved.

As I was about to go in the house, I happened to glance over by the green stoop of legend and saw the crusty white vagrant staring at me. Well, staring is what I think he was doing - I'm hard pressed even after this incident to believe that this cat ever opens his eyes. I cautiously snuck over to say hello - he backed up off the steps and to his food bowl by the door, 'watching'. I stuck out my hand to him, and he inched closer. This was a surprise on its own, because I'm usually greeted with a hearty growl. Then, a curious thing happened.

He let me pet him.

Or rather, he did what Rebel does and pets himself on you while you just sit there. But that's how I got first contact, and after that he let me pet him quite vigorously. He's rather fond of scratches on the side of his face between the ear and his grinning chin. I gave him a little pat and was very sad when the cold got to me and I had to go in, deciding to leave him alone. He had other plans, though.

Halfway from the house, he gave a cute little mew as he watched me again from the steps.

It's no secret that I love this cat, and if the little fella is gonna ask for more I'll be damned if I deny him that. I came over to give him a second dose of vitamin love, when the fuzzy ball of grisly wizard actually 'opened' his eyes. I know some cats don't open their eyes real wide when they are alert, but ICEMAN takes the cake with his powers of the oriental. I still don't know what colors his eyes ares, but he definitely attempted to look at me. I gave him more pets, and he smiled in the way that he does, kinda like in Old Coot, and I'd only say I'm half crazy if I think I didn't hear a slight purr.

It wasn't much at all, but it changed my life.

Thinking back, he had the fur consistency of Pinky, which is really good for a stray cat. That, and he didn't look as sick as the last time I met him, which is good. He lives in a very harsh environment, but the locals seem to be very nice to him and he makes a living and gets his paycheck for being cool as beans. Ice Cold. ;P

I got to do something that I thought was unattainable, and in that one act of feline kindness he was able to melt away weeks of frustration and the lack of faith in humanity that was slowly chipping away at my soul and drowning me alive. Work sucks, school sucks, and I wasn't very happy with the way things have been going.

Until ICEMAN told me,

Even a grump can be nice if he wants to.

Remember that the next time you see a stray cat, and even if he's mean, love him anyway; He just might love you back :heart:

A celebration

Finally, it's the moment everyone has been waiting for - 100 cats have finally been documented! It's time to PARTY! :party:

Actually, to be honest with you, I didn't have anything special planned, so I quickly put together this journal and a special What is a Wellgarth? feature. One of the greatest accomplishments in my life and all I have is LAME x3

Maybe if any DA people are in PA we can have a party :?

Anyway, the journey from cat 1 to 100 has been nothing short of magical. When I started this project almost a year ago now, I had never dreamed I would ever get this far, and now that I have, I just can't believe it. Better yet, I've seen how the project is working, in the sense that I can remember each cat I've seen so very well. And sadly, we've lost some cats, and now have to use the book to see them again :(

But that's what the book is for, so I don't make the mistake I made with my first cat, Neko. The losses we've all accumulated along the way have not been total losses, and with each photo there are the memories of our cats, our companions, and our friends. No matter how mediocre of a job I may be doing in reality as far as my photography and assemblance, I know I've done my best and it gives me a great sense of accomplishment to know that I've actually done what I've set out to do. Neko, I've done you proud :heart:

Everything goes in a circle, and Sammi is so like my Rennac that's it's shocking, and yet they are so different as to exceed the numerical gap between them. That's the wonderful thing about cats, I think; they are so alike, yet different, and they are all important. I don't think that it needs to be said that I love cats; hopefully my project will help others see how amazing cats are themselves.

It's astonishing too, to think that in 100 cats I've had an exactly even split of 50 males and 50 females. I never expected the two to be even close (skewed towards females), but it's been neat to see how neck-and-neck the ratio has been since day one. Let's see how far it goes!

I hope to be able to keep doing what I am doing for the rest of my life. Maybe when I die a cat will make a book about me :lmao:

Either way, I wanna be cremated and used as kitty litter. Give a little back, and get what I deserve ;P

Just what is a Wellgarth, anyway?

The technical answer is that it's a town. Yep, a town, from Dragon Quest II, to be precise. It was an underground town where they locked out fellow villagers to be eaten by monsters, where you could peddle for jail keys, where the most elusive thief in the world is hiding, and where a girl asks if you can take her to the bathroom. Yup. It's kinda like that.

What you want to know, though, is what I am, not some silly town whose name I pilfered (though, it is a sweet name, from a sweet sweet town). I am me, and I photograph cats, but that isn't good enough, I guess. After 100 cats, who all of my watchers know infinitely better than anything about me, I caved in and decided I would reveal just what this Wellgarth is.

I never wanted to do anything like this, because my focus has always been the cats, not me. That's how I've lived my life, and I don't value myself as much as I probably should; I like the cats. I'm here for the cats. So take this for what it is, a treat, and nothing more. I want to get back to those cats :P



Yeah, that's me. I'm almost 20 years old, and I live in Pennsylvania, of the United States of America. I believe fervently in our constitution, and therefore I'm at odd with my country, which is unfortunate. But that's another tale.

My second passion in life is baseball; heck, if cats played baseball I'd be in heaven x3 I grew up a Phillies fan, of course, but I've also come to enjoy San Fran a lot. I love my National League Baseball - Pitchers hit, WOOHOO! :D

I'm also currently going to college at Penn State university, majoring in Wildlife and Fisheries science. I want to be outside (with the BIG cats), and not stuck in some cubicle for the rest of my life. I seemed to have developed a thirst for photography, so that should work well I think :P

That being said, I'm not a professional photographer, and I don't want to be. If it becomes your job, you hate it, and that's why I don't like hockey anymore (I work at a hockey rink). I got a digital camera from my dad, and I seem to have fell in to cats ever since. I can't take good pictures of anything else, LOL

I absolutely LOVE cats. But of course, you know that by now, right? YOU HAD BETTER >:3 I want to adopt a bajillion of cats and care for all of them. Now that's the life :)

I also love the project, Cat Book Cat. It's my thing, my hobby, my passion, and I want to pursue it the best I can. It's the one thing in my life I'm proud of. And I always feel that I should be doing better at it. I also love comments and help with my idea, so DA has been the best place ever to share my passion with. At least you guys don't get tired of it like my family does, and my poor soul mate ~SnowFox0027 as I blow out everyone's ears with cats, cat stories, and cat desires. I LUFF YOU KITTEHS :heart:

Anyhow, I'm really not good at talking about myself at all, because I really don't like doing it. At least you know a little more about me, eh :?

Here are a few of the questions that I am asked almost on a daily basis, or points that I'd like to discuss as clarification on some issues. If I've sent you here, it's not to be an ass - I'm just lazy and don't want to type x3

Anything you don't see below that you'd like to know? Don't be afraid to ask! It just might end up in the list anyhow :)



Q ~ How many cats do you own?

A ~ Despite having photographed 90+ cats at the time I've written this FAQ, it comes as a big surprise to many that I only have one cat, whose name is Rennac. I've only ever had two cats in my life, and not at the same time.


Q ~ Do you work at a cat shelter / animal rescue?

A ~ No, but I would love to. College, work, and my own animals dictate my fortune right now, but I would certainly enjoy the work and of course, the cats!


Q ~ How do you find so many cats?

A ~ I grow them, like tomatoes :D
Naw, not really! But I do know a lot of people who who own cats, and in some cases like =KaiserFlames', a LOT of cats. I also take time to go see cat showings at places like PetsMart and hunt for strays. You'd be surprised how many cats you could find when you took the time to look.


Q ~ Why do some cats have clipped ears?

A ~ I get this question almost every time I post a cat with this condition, and it's one of the major reasons I wrote this FAQ. To see an example, please look at a fan favorite cat by the name of Mu. Notice how her left ear is cut? No, she wasn't in some grueling accident and she wasn't tortured - she was simply neutered. As a farm cat, she was eligible to be spayed with shots for a paltry $10 as opposed to the normal $200+ range for female cats. They clipped her ear, as being a farm cat meant she could wander, and in this way they could know whether or not the cat was already fixed - saving time, money, and stress by cutting the cat back open to find out. It's strange, awkward, and it takes some getting used to, but it's for the good of the cat and clipped cats are totally healthy.


Q ~ Which cat is your favorite?

A ~ My own, you silly ;P
That's really an unfair question, and everybody knows it! But if I had to choose two cats (not mine) who have touched me in a deep and profound way that I will remember and love for the rest of my life, it would have to be Jasper & Sweetie.


Q ~ What kind of camera do you use?

A ~ I use a simple Olympus FE-340, which is an 8 mega-pixel digital. Nothing fancy, nothing high end, but simple and easy to use. I'm in no way a professional, and I don't try to be. I just try to do the best with what I have, and show that patience pays off and good photos can come from anyone.


Q ~ Are your photos stock?

A ~ NO. ABSOLUTELY NOT.
It is my fault perhaps that I don't make this issue clear enough, but I do not at this time feel the need to accuse everyone of using my images by issuing a warning on every deviation. I do however notice that a lot of photos get a lot of downloads, and if this trend continues I will take downloads off. I DO want to make it clear though that you CAN use my works - in fact, it is an HONOR if you do so. Please just ASK. For the love of goodness, ASK. It takes like what, 30 seconds to send a comment/note?


Q ~ Can my cat be in your Cat Book?

A ~ Unfortunately for most, I have to answer no to this question, unless I can physically meet the cat. It's not to be mean - the purpose of this book is to document cat's that I have actually MET. The best way to prove this is for ME to photograph them. That's half the fun and pretty much all of my project. If I can touch the cat and snap its picture, I'll be more than ecstatic to add him/her! Tonight, I have lost a friend very dear to me. My blue rat Slinky has passed away, losing her bout to pneumonia in a horrible burst. Sadly, with great regret and anguish, I had to put her down as she was in a great deal of pain.

It is thus, we honor you friend, as we shall always miss and love you. Forever my heart is anchored to you, and I shall never forget your kindness and the love you have given to me. :heart:

Herein lies the Cat Book Cat project, a whimsical hobby that I am pursuing for fun. The purpose of this book of photographs is so that no matter how long from now, we may all remember our feline friends. They've given a lot to all of us, and I'd like to commemorate that.

I may only count and document a cat that I've personally seen and photographed. Thusly, I travel around to try and find as many cats as I can! Only their very best picture is placed in the book with a tag of information. In each photo, I try to get the highest quality while capturing the cat's natural beauty and his/her personality.

New to to the project is the "title" given to deceased cats, in honor and in summation of their life. Sweetie, for example, is "Mother to All" in honor of her outstanding motherly duties and has received her title and a paragraph to tell her tale. This is my way to recognize the friends that we have lost :(

This project has officially been dedicated to my first cat Neko, who passed away after 13 wonderful years. I don't have many photographs of him, and I don't plan to make that same mistake twice. In your honor buddy, the first and greatest :heart:
