Recap
Having spent a good chunk of the day in Charleston, South Carolina, we cut through Georgia, stopping only in Brunswick to use the restrooms. Before we know it we are in Florida, stopping at the welcome center to look at brochures and rest after a couple more hours in the car. Then we're off again. Closer to Orlando we hit our first thunderstorm, which slowed us down a little, but not much. By this time, it's already six o'clock in the evening, our check-in time was supposed to be around four, so we're already late. But what really delayed our arrival (apart from spending a quarter of the day in Charleston) was a couple of car accidents on the freeway, which were no doubt caused by the heavy rains. Once we got through that section of freeway, it was smoothe sailing all the way to the hotel. The sun even came out (Florida is the Sunshine State, after all).

Seven o'clock in the evening, we arrive on Disney property. Soon after, we arrive at the hotel (Disney's Old Key West) and check in. The concierge hands out various buttons for the things we are celebrating during our stay, including my sister's high school graduation (the entire reason for the trip) and my dad's birthday (which is the following day). After the concierge hands us our keys/tickets, we are off to our room, which is located at the far end of the resort.

I don't have any photos of the room, but I will do my best to describe it. It was much like any other hotel room--two queen-sized beds on one wall, a table and two chairs on another, a small corner of the room dedicated to the bathroom--except there was a sliding glass door which lead out to a tiny patio and a tiny kitchenette, which included a mini-fridge and a coffee-maker.

Since it was late, we did not go to any of the four Disney parks our first night. Instead, we headed off to Olivia's at the front of the resort to grab a bite to eat, and then to Downtown Disney to browse. And that was our first day in Florida at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Monday, July 13 (My dad's 51st birthday)
Park: EPCOT Center
The first thing we did was visit The Land, where we took a boat ride on the Living on the Land tour. Then we headed over to The Living Seas, which is one of my favorite stops in the park.

We didn't stay at EPCOT long, because we had dinner reservations at Fulton's Crab House at Downtown Disney and we had to go back to our hotel room to change. I wore a white sundress with hot pink and green circles on it. We had eaten at Fulton's once before (in 2000) and had excellent meals. I got a platter of King Crab claws for $51.99--the most expensive meal I've ever had, with a few exceptions. Afterwards, we hopped on a bus to MG...excuse me, Disney's Hollywood Studios, where we basically just looked around and walked dinner off until the park closed.

I remember looking in one store that had DVDs and I made the comment that it would be so cool if they had Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers vol. 2 but of course, they didn't have it. Not that I had expected they would. I had been looking for it for two years with no luck.

Tuesday, July 14
Park: Disney's Hollywood Studios

So, we decided to pick up where we left off the night before. Unfortunately for us, the lines were so horribly long and confusing that it took almost an hour to even get in the gates that day. Some of you may be asking why? Well, since September 11, 2001, Disney has upped their security. If you're carrying a bag, you're not allowed into the park until it has been inspected. The process of searching the bags is usually handled much better than it was that day. It was mostly because people weren't following instructions and having their bags ready when they got up to the security guard. Anyway, we walk into the park, and head toward the same direction we had the previous night. We go into the same store with the DVDs and lo and behold! There, sitting on the shelf, is not one, but three copies of Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers vol. 2. I couldn't believe my eyes. I, of course, snatched up a copy for myself immediately. I paid for it, and had it sent to our hotel so I wouldn't have to carry it while we visited the attractions.

Disney really is a magical place.

Wednesday, July 15
Park: Disney's Animal Kingdom

This had to be the hottest day of our entire trip. On August 21st we had our team member barbeque at work, and part of the festivities was to pie our General Manager, Rich, for charity. The charity that the community outreach (let's just say) manager picked was United Way. Each pie, consisting of only whipped topping on a styrofoam plate, cost ten dollars.

I wasn't planning to participate. I didn't really have the money. But, my immediate supervising manager, Mark paid for a pie for me. So, I accepted. But, being me, I "didn't do it right" and they gave me a do-over. So, here is a photo from that wonderful day:

I felt so bad about getting a do-over for free that I ended up paying for a pie anyway. But I used money I had won from the lottery (on a ticket I had found), so I didn't really lose anything. I guess it was destiny.

7:30AM, Saturday, July 11, 2009 we are packed, in the van (a 2003 tan Pontiac Montana), and ready to go.

After a quick stop at the gas station to fuel up, we hit I-77 South and it is smooth sailing. We eat breakfast on the road (Krispy Kreme donuts bought the night before) and don't stop (okay, there may have been a rest stop in between) until we hit Tamarack, a really neat travel plaza about four hours away in West Virginia.

It is not only a rest stop for the weary traveler, but it is a place to watch master craftsmen and women at work. You can even buy some of their pieces. There was even a place to taste West Virginia made wines. And a bottle of West Virginia Honeywine just happens to be the first thing I purchased on my trip.

Before leaving Tamarack, we eat the lunch we've packed out of the back of our van. Packing lunch for the first day of the trip is a great day to save money...well, sort of. I mean, you still have to buy it to take with you. But, nevermind.

Anyway, after leaving Tamarack, we make a stop at Fenton Glass works, also in West Virginia. We walk around there for a bit and are once again on our way.

We wind our way through the mountains of West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina where we go on a detour in search of a place my mom had seen on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. We find it, but it was too early to eat. So, we continue on to South Carolina where we attempted to find another restaurant that was suggested to us by our GPS. But, it no longer existed.

So, around 7:30-8:00 we stop at a seafood restaurant called Captain's Galley. To be quite honest, I didn't expect much from it. It looked a little, let's just say run-down, but the parking lot was full, so we went in. What a big difference! The inside was bright, cheery, and welcoming. We had a great dinner that night. And the hush puppies were addictive.

After dinner, we stopped at an outdoor train museum, which was ready to close. But the owners were really nice and let my dad look around and take photos while my mom, sister and I sat in the van waiting for him. When he finally came back to the car (after what seemed like an hour), we had to decide where to stop for the night. Our choices were to stop in Charleston, SC or keep going until we reached Savannah, GA. After yet another rest stop, we decided to stay in Charleston for the night.

7:30AM, Sunday, July 12, 2009

We wake up at the Holiday Inn Express in Charleston, SC, get dressed, and go down the hall to eat our complimentary hot breakfast. Then we are once again on our way to the Sunshine State. But, we take a few detours first.

First, we needed to fuel up again (now, I'm sure there was at least one fuel stop before this, but I slept a lot while we were on the road). Then, my dad wanted to check out a Civil War Era submarine called The Hunley (sp?), but it didn't open until noon, and it was only 8:00AM. So, we headed over to the Charleston Visitor Center where we decided to walk around Charleston for a while. And that's exactly what we did.

We drove into the historic district and parked on a street near a breakwall where you could view Fort Sumtner in the distance. We walked along the breakwall and into town (not a stroll in the park, mind you) where we tried gilatto and took in some of the historic streets. After a few hours of walking around town, we hopped back in the van and were once again on our way.

Before we knew it we were in Georgia and then Florida. But, there were still quite a few miles to go before we reached our destination.

7:30 AM; Saturday, July 11, 2009

After months, nay years, of planning and days of last-minute shopping our family vacation was ready to begin. Our destination: Orlando, Florida; The Walt Disney World Resort.

But, our story can't start here. No, it must begin Friday, July 10--Packing Day.

7:20 AM; Friday July 10, 2009

I wake up to go to work. I have to be there at 8:00 AM.

As most of you know, I was recently promoted to a full-time loss prevention position at the wholesale club where I work, so I have a tight schedule. I know what days I have to be at work and when. Friday, July 11 was no exception, except my nerves were dancing. After weeks of long hours standing at the entrance to a busy club and checking cart after cart for unpaid merchandise and other cashier errors, I was ready for vacation. My only goal was to get through the day and get home. Four o'clock couldn't come fast enough.

Though, it being Friday, I did have to stop at the bank on the way home. I mean what good is going on vacation if you don't have any money to spend? No good at all. But after going to the bank I went quickly home to take an afternoon shower--so I'd be all fresh and clean for the early departure, and also so the towels could be washed and dried before we left. Damp towels are breeding grounds for mildew and mold.

After my shower, I started packing, but was interrupted when we had to run a few small errands.



Instead of cooking that evening, the family went out to a great little place called The Brew Kettle--a hole-in-the-wall BBQ and Brew joint in Strongsville, Ohio.

We had just gotten our food when my dad got a phone call from my uncle (my mom's brother), who had left for his own vacation earlier in the day. And it wasn't good news. My uncle's truck died a few hours away in New York state. We weren't sure whether or not my dad would have to go pick up my uncle and cousin, and thus delay our own departure. But all goes well from there, because my uncle was able to use my grandparents' (my dad's parents) AAA card to get a tow home.

So, after dinner we picked up a mixed dozen Krispy Kreme donuts for breakfast in the car and went home. After which my mom and I ran out (at 10 o'clock at night, mind you) to the grocery store to buy lunch items for the trip while my dad was supposed to be taking his shower.

Finally, we got home from the grocery store only to discover that my dad had a guest over. And they were working on a letter regarding something that had taken place at the airport where my dad works. Needless to say, my mom wasn't happy. As I said before my dad was supposed to be taking his shower so the towels could be washed and dried. Damp towels breed mold and mildew, and since we were going to be gone for a while, my mom just wanted them done. It was after 11 when my dad's guest finally left, which left my mom no hope of getting her towels done. So, I offered to stay up and finish them for her, since I could sleep in the car anyway. Plus, I had to finish packing. Not to mention I had to finish cleaning my room before we left. My mom hates returning to a messy house. And, quite frankly, so do I.



Packing for a long trip has to be one of the most stressful and time-consuming events in a person's life. You have to think about what you need to take, what you want to take, and how it's all going to fit in the one suitcase you share with your sister. You also have to think about the weather, and whether or not you'll have enough to wear. (Although, in my case, I packed too much.)

So, after I finished packing, and while I waited for the towels to finish washing and drying, I plugged in my earbuds on my iPod and cleaned my room.

I didn't finish cleaning my room until three AM. But it was worth it, because I wouldn't have to trip over papers and what not when I returned from vacation.

Well, it seems that I have just reached my four-year anniversary (July 26) here on DA, and that only a few days after my four-year anniversary at work. Yes, four years certainly flys by.

I would just like to take this moment to thank everyone who has visited my page over the last four years and helped me reach over 11,000 pageviews. Here's to 11,000 more!

Yes, this does mean that I am officially back from vacation...unfortunately. Pics and stories in journals to come. So, stay tuned!

EDIT 9/20/2009: So, I finally, FINALLY finished reading The Duchess by Amanda Foreman this afternoon. It only took me two and a half months!

As soon as I was finished reading The Duchess, I moved on to a book called Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin, which I've already finished! I thought it was supposed to be a diet book, but it was really more of a lifestyle book. Not to mention it was basically "vegan propaganda" as my sister so kindly put it, but it was very informative. I don't think I could ever do the Skinny Bitch diet, being that I love my meat and dairy, but I do understand veganism a little bit more. And that, my friends, is a good thing. The book also gave me some ideas on how to start my own diet. You know, without giving up the meat, poultry, fish, and dairy. So, if you're curious, I reccommend reading it.

And that concludes my reading for Summer 2009. I read five books. Yep. That's it. I just didn't have the time to read more.

Anyway, Happy Fall (Autumn) everyone!

EDIT 9/18/2009: I don't know where the time went this summer, but I sure didn't get anywhere near as much reading done as I would have liked. Between a full-time job and a full-time vacation (see my What I did on My Summer Vacation journals), I just didn't have much time to read. Plus, the last book I picked up, The Duchess by Amanda Foreman, was/is a very long-winded read. That, and I haven't exactly been reading on a daily basis. In fact, I still haven't finished it. Better luck next time I guess.

I think I'll just have move on to Fall Reading. There's more time indoors then.

I'm not dead...yet.

I'm still around, I've just been busy doing other things. Therefore, I've only been able to get on the computer about every OTHER day instead of every day. That said, here's what I've been up to:

I finally started my summer reading on June 9th. I originally planned to start on May 25th (Memorial Day). I didn't get to start right away because I was still reading The Rose Labyrinth, which was okay. Not the most fast-paced book out there, but it was decent. Though, I imagine if you are into the DaVinci Code, you'd like it far more than I did. That's what it reminded me of.

Anyway, the first book I read for Summer Reading 2009 was A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray. I read this book a few years ago and loved it. In fact, the last time I read it, it took me only one day and it's a 400 page book!. But I decided to re-read it, along with the second book in the trilogy Rebel Angels, because I wanted to read the third book in the trilogy-- The Sweet Far Thing. I waited a year and a half for it to come out on paperback (not a huge fan of hardcover books, by the way). I am about a quarter of the way through that book (which is more than twice as long as the first book in the trilogy, but so far well worth it).

I have also been working a lot more since I have started full-time. It's nice because I have more money, but it's a bitch when I have to be there at 6 AM on certain weekends. Luckily, I usually get every other weekend off. Including this weekend. But I will say one thing about driving to work at 5:30 in the morning: There's no traffic! And I did get to see a fox on my way to work this past Sunday. She was beautiful. I also saw another fox on my way to work in the afternoon on the day before, though not as close. I only wish I had had my camera with me.

So, Friday was my last day of work until Monday. And what a day it was! It had to be the most awesomely random day at work ever.

As most of you know, I started a new position a few weeks ago guarding the front door and checking receipts for unpaid items. Well, Friday started out as a normal day at the front door, but at around 9:15am, the janitor asked me "are you gonna let this guy in?"

I'm just like, "huh." I can't always see everything from where I have to stand, so I turn the corner, and there's a guy on a unicycle!

And it wasn't just a standard-sized unicycle, no. It was at least five feet up in the air to the seat. So, with the man riding it, he sat a minimum of eight feet up in the air.

Anyway, he started to roll past, when he decided to come inside the club vestibule (it's just a hallway with a really tall ceiling) through one of the three open garage doors facing the parking lot. I thought he was going to try entering the store, but luckily he went right out again. And I thought that would be the last I'd see of him. So, the janitor and I went on with our business as usual. We were the only team members to see the unicyclist anyway.

However, the unicyclist came back about a half hour later. And, of course, the janitor and I were the only team members to see him again.

So, by this time, I wasn't sure if I was hallucinating or not. Seriously, it was very strange. I think only one customer saw him. A couple minutes later, though, another team member walks into the club, and I asked her if SHE saw the unicyclist. She was so relieved that I asked her, because she was afraid she'd been hallucinating, too.

The rest of the day then goes on as usual. Customers come, customers go, and I find things that aren't paid for. This is where it gets even better, though.

As I was getting ready to go home, I found an envelope on the trash can next to my standing spot at the front door. It only had a dollar in it, but there were directions to a house on it, and I remembered that another team member had set her purse down on it to get her keys out. So, being the honest person I am, I asked my managers (who were all standing on the front line) what I should do with it. My loss prevention manager told me to attach a note and send it to our cash office, which I did. But, while I was asking him what to do, another manager walks up, and tells us that she just noticed that we (meaning me and the three other managers)were all wearing the same colored shirts.

That was just freaky. After that I went to the bank and went home. No more weirdness on Friday.

Yesterday, however, was another story. Yesterday, my family and I went to Cincinnati to check out AI Ohio-Cincinnati for my sister (~alwaysALOHA), because it was their Open House. It took us about four hours to drive from Cleveland to there with no problems. So, after spending about two and half hours listening to schpiels and such, we were on our way to Loveland Castle (pictures coming soon).

Loveland Castle is a medieval style castle built during the first half of the twentieth century by one man. It was only $3.00 each to tour the building and the grounds, so we got out and did that for a while. It was beautiful. I highly recommend stopping if you're ever in Southwestern Ohio, but I must warn that it is not handicap friendly.

Once we left the castle we went to eat at the Rock-Bottom Brewery in downtown Cinci, where there was a festival going on with dancing and singing. We weren't there except long enough to eat, but what we saw and heard was pretty good.

After eating we stopped at Jungle Jim's--a huge specialty foods grocery store in Fairfield. If you want any kind of special food from another country, chances are they have it there. The store is so big that maps are offered at the door. It's like an amusement park for Foodies. They even won Best Public Restroom of the year in 2007! So, we were in there for about two hours shopping around. We don't get there very often, but it's fun to just look at some of the neat things they have.

It had been a really nice day all day. The sun was shining and the temperature was in the upper seventies. It was about 8:00 at night when we left Jungle Jim's and the storms were on their way. Yep. It's the unofficial official start of summer. And (most of) you know what that means. It's time to begin my summer reading.

Y'know. As soon as I finish the last book I've neglected for the last three or four weeks.

I'm almost finsihed reading The Rose Labyrinth by Titania Hardie. If you like mysteries like DaVinci Code, this book is a good one for you. Or if you just like a challenging book. (It actually comes with 36 seperate leaflets of paper with the clues from the story for you to figure out the mystery before the characters do!)

Anyway, as soon as I finish reading that (probably tomorrow), I'm going to start reading the third and final book in the Great and Terrible Beauty trilogy--The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray.

--But that book came out a year and a half ago! Why didn't you read it then?

Why? Because it wasn't in paperback yet. That's why. I had to wait that long for it to come out. I'm not a huge fan of hard cover books. And I won't mix hardcover and paperback in a series. So, there!

That's about it. I'm off to bed now. I have an early day tomorrow.

As some of you may know, I live in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio.

As some of you may not know, a few weeks ago there was a contest announced to make a hastily made video to positively promote tourism in the Cleveland, Ohio area.

This contest was the direct result of a commission gone wrong. You see, the Cleveland Tourism Board hired this comedian who lives in the area (don't ask me his name, because I don't know it). Well, anyway, the board hired him to make a music video to get people from other parts of the country to come to Cleveland on vacation and it was an epic fail! The video the comedian made was so ironic (in trying to be comedic) that it ended up promoting all negative images of Cleveland, which was directly the opposite of what the tourism board is trying to promote about our wonderful city (no irony there, I promise).

Don't understand? Just imagine someone singing about visiting a place where the river literally catches on fire and has three seasons worth of construction. Would you want to visit a place like that if you weren't from here and knew he was only joking? Yeah, me neither.

So, anyway, here's the point of this journal. One of my college classmates, Marissa DiSantis, has made one of these hastily made videos with a friend of hers (Kevin Hornsby, whom I don't know personally), which you can view here: [link] .

Yup, it's me! Starting Monday, I have a new job. No, I'm not actually a sheriff. And I don't have a badge. Well, not unless you count my good old name tag.

For those of you who don't know where I work, I work at BJ's Wholesale Club. It's like a Sam's or Costco, only better! (Not really. Okay, maybe a little. )

Anyway, I started working there in the summer of 2005 as a part-time cashier to earn money while I went to college. And up until two weeks ago, I was still going to be a part-time cashier until I found a full-time job elsewhere. Although, by now, I was a part-time cashier who basically covered everyone's breaks (gas station, front door, supervisor, etc.)

But since the economy has been rather, erm, sluggish, I haven't really been looking. I just don't have any motivation. I already hated the job I had, which was at least stable. So, why should I look for a full-time job elsewhere that may not have been as stable? The point is I haven't actively been looking for a full-time job. And I graduated from college almost a year ago (May 11th to be exact). That's not to say that I haven't put in any applications anywhere, because I have, and I haven't had much luck with any of them. I've had exactly two interviews. One with a financial company, which may or may not still be in existence. And another with a shady sales company that I wanted nothing to do with after I found out what it was. I've also put in applications to places such as American Greetings, a card company, and the public library, but have not received more than a couple letters stating that the position(s) I had applied for had been filled. I even applied to a pet clinic that was moving down the street from me. It's just frustrating. And I know there are far more people out there, who are far more desperate than I am.

Anyway, back to what my new job is. First of all, I am not leaving BJ's (as much as I'd like to). I guess it's just not my time to leave that company yet. Anyway, the new loss prevention manager has been begging me, practically since he started working at BJ's, to work at the front door. It's my least favorite place to work. At least it was. But, last week, after a supervisor was offered a full-time position (a rarity in retail, mind you), I was offered a full-time position with one catch. I had to work on the front door. But, from what I have heard, the benefits are worth it. And, since mine are now expired, and I have no other prospective full-time job offers at the moment, I couldn't pass it up.

So, starting Monday, I am Jessica, Full-time Front Door LP Team Member!

Other Goings-On in my life:

1. I am now 23 years old.
2. I would like to know if anyone knows how to make a shout board (not a shout box, mind you) on DA.
3. I am addicted to Nostalgia Critic’s videos.
4. I have not drunk pop for four months.

Hey Bookworms!

I had a question for all of you. How would you feel about a contest? What kind of contest, you may ask.

Well, what I had in mind is this:

Re-create the cover of one of your favorite books using your own photos or stock pictures. There would only be a few project rules:

1. The original cover of the book must be a drawing.

2. The original cover of the book must have at least one person on it.

3. No parts of the original cover may be used. Not even text.

4. Have fun!

The goal is to try to make your cover look really close to the original without copying it exactly.

Please note that this contest is not official yet. Therefore, the rules are not final, and I will not be announcing any start date/ end date or possible prizes until I know how much participation would be expected.

So, I went to the dentist today for a cleaning. I usually dread going to the dentist (in fact, it's been nearly three and a half years since my last check-up), because I usually end up having to go back to get my teeth filled (I already have ten fillings! ). However, this time was different. I had NO cavities! I don't think I've ever left the dentist office feeling happy before, but it feels so good.

I guess I'm finally doing something right when it comes to my teeth.

Well, "it" is my brand-spanking new digital camera!

I ordered it online last Saturday and I had to wait for it to be delivered. It is a Kodak Z-series camera, model number: Z1485IS. It has 14 megapixels and 5X optical zoom. I can't wait to share my pics with you, so keep an eye out for them.

For several years in a row, I gave up pop (soda, cola, etc., etc., etc., whatever you want to call it). But I'm going to try something different this year (for Lent at least), as I have not drinken any pop since December 31, 2008. Yay me! So, apparently I do have SOME will power. I have plenty of access to it at work (.50 a can!), but I have been good and stayed away from it.

Some of you may be wondering why I gave it up at the beginning of this year. Well, to be honest, I'm not a hundred percent sure myself. I do know that I want to lose weight, though. And giving up empty calories is a big start, which brings me about to what I'm going to (try to) achieve this year during Lent.

I have three goals.

My first goal is to lose ten pounds by Easter, which is only six weeks away now. My current weight is none of your business, but I will tell you that I have been a big girl for most of my life and have already lost ten pounds+/- since August of 2008.

In the past I have made many poor choices regarding diet and exercise. So, my second goal during Lent 2009 is to try to walk at least a half hour a day. And my third goal is to avoid fast food restaurants, which will save me quite a bit of money. Hopefully doing this will help produce the desired results.

It's not a lot to ask for, but I really need to turn my life around. Maybe I'll even gain some confidence.

Since I am finished with school, I have a little extra time (though not a lot) to draw and write, which means there may be an increase in deviations from me over the next six weeks. But, more importantly, I need to hunker down and look for full-time work. There isn't much out there for my field, or any field really, but maybe if I actually tried (not that I really want to), I could find something that I could be happy with for a while and is hopefully close to home. I've already applied for a part-time position at the local library. (Cross your fingers everyone!)

And, speaking of books, I finished Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey last Tuesday (only took me two and a half months ). It was a great read. I highly reccommend it if you enjoy fantasy novels with intricate plots, but be forewarned, it's 900 pages long.

I have also started and finished both Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams and Dewey by Vicki Myron (an excellent biography about a small town Library Cat).

I'm not sure what I plan on reading next, but it's either the next Princess Diaries book or The Last Unicorn.

13. Puffy eyes - Preparation H
14. Paper cut - crazy glue or Chap Stick (glue is used instead of suture at most hospitals)
15. Stinky feet - Jello!

16. Athletes feet - cornstarch
17. Fungus on toenails or fingernails - Vicks vapor rub
18. Kool aid to clean dishwasher pipes. Just put in the detergent section and run a cycle, it will also clean a toilet. (Wow, and we drink this stuff?)
19. Kool Aid can be used as a dye in paint also Kool Aid in Dannon plain yogurt as a finger paint, your kids will love it and it won't hurt them if they eat it!
20. Peanut butter - will get scratches out of CD's! Wipe off with a coffee filter paper

21. Sticking bicycle chain - Pam no-stick cooking spray
22. Pam will also remove paint, and grease from your hands!? Keep a can in your garage for your hubby
23. Peanut butter will remove ink from the face of dolls
24. When the doll clothes are hard to put on, sprinkle with corn starch and watch them slide on
25. Heavy dandruff - pour on the vinegar !

26. Body paint - Crisco mixed with food coloring. Heat the Crisco in the microwave, pour in to an empty film container and mix with the food color of your choice!
27. Tie Dye T-shirt - mix a solution of Kool Aid in a container, tie a rubber band around a section of the T-shirt and soak
28. Preserving a newspaper clipping - large bottle of club soda and cup of milk of magnesia , soak for 20 min. and let dry, will last for many years!
29. A Slinky will hold toast and CD's!
30. To keep goggles and glasses from fogging, coat with Colgate toothpaste

31. Wine stains, pour on the Morton salt and watch it absorb into the salt.
32. To remove wax - Take a paper towel and iron it over the wax stain, it will absorb into the towel.
33. Remove labels off glassware etc. rub with Peanut butter !
34. Baked on food - fill container with water, get a Bounce paper softener and the static from the Bounce towel will cause the baked on food to adhere to it. Soak overnight. Also; you can use 2 Efferdent tablets, soak overnight!
35. Crayon on the wall - Colgate toothpaste and brush it!

36. Dirty grout - Listerine
37. Stains on clothes - Colgate
38. Grass stains - Karo Syrup
39. Grease Stains - Coca Cola , it will also remove grease stains from the driveway overnight. We know it will take corrosion from car batteries!
40. Fleas in your carpet 20 Mule Team Borax - sprinkle and let stand for 24 hours. Maybe this will work if you get them back again.
41. To keep FRESH FLOWERS longer Add a little Clorox! , or 2 Bayer aspirin, or just use 7-up instead of water.

42. When you go to buy bread in the grocery store, have you ever wondered which is the freshest, so you 'squeeze' for freshness or softness Did you know that bread is delivered fresh to the stores five days a week Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Each day has a different color twist tie. They are:
Monday = Blue, Tuesday = Green, Thursday = Red Friday = White and Saturday = Yellow. *yellow*
So if today was Thursday, you would want red twist tie; not white which is Fridays (almost a week old)! The colors go alphabetically by color Blue - Green - Red - White - yyellow , Monday through Saturday. Very easy to remember. I thought this was interesting. I looked in the grocery store and the bread wrappers DO have different twist ties, and even the ones with the plastic clips have different colors. You learn something new everyday! Okay, so, several months ago ~CodyMacArthurFett had a journal where he listed ten things he liked that began with a certain letter. And the deal was, that if you responded to his journal, you'd get a letter to make a list with yourself. Well, I responded to said journal, and am now only getting to writing my list down (not that I haven't thought about it. I swear!). So, here goes,

Ten Things I Like that Begin with the Letter 'W':

1. Wednesdays--This is my sanity day. It is the day I do not have to go into work and deal with the public.
2. Water--Without which I, nor anyone else for that matter, would be alive.
3. Whales--What's cooler than Shamu?
4. Writing--I want to be a writer. I even have a degree in English.
5. Walking--When the weather's nice.
6. Walt Disney World Resort-- Because it's the happiest place on Earth.
7. Worthington--This is the brand of clothing I wear the most!
8. Williamsburg, VA--I could live there. I really could.
9. Watching--TV, movies, birds... As long as it's entertaining to me, I'll probably watch it. And last, but not least...
10. Winter's End--As in Winter is over and Spring has begun! (Hey, I had to get creative. This was tougher than I thought it would be.)

You see, my mom has this extremely lucky friend who wins tickets for events like this all the time and this time she had four, so she invited me and my mom to go tonight and AHHH! I've never sat in such close seats in my life. We were only ten (maybe twelve) rows from the stage. We could see the actors' faces! It was amazing. I don't remember laughing so hard.

It was opening night, too. That was pretty awesome, with the exception of a couple of mikes failing during the song "There, Right There", which just happens to be my favorite song from the show. Ah well. I got to see a Broadway hit.

On another note, it's been six months since I graduated from college. SIX MONTHS! I don't know where the time went.

You may have noticed the title of this journal was "Feathered Fiends." Well, most of you know that I work in a regional wholesale club, and thus, we have large garage doors in the front which allows us to let all kinds of nature in, including that of the feathered variety. We also have a tire bay in the back, also with large garage doors so cars can get in and out to get their tires changed.

It's been quite chilly here over the last week. It's already dipping into the 30s when it gets dark. Brrrr.

So, here's what happened. Last night, our tire guy, Jim, went outside to have a smoke (bad Jim!) and he was standing in front of the OPEN tire bay doors. Well, something big swooped into the garage over his head.

What was it? A red-tailed hawk. He found the heat register right away, and he wasn't leaving.

The boys up front found out about it and raced to the back of the store to see if they could help get rid of it, and ended up getting dived at by the thing. My manager, Amy, even called Animal Control, but they wouldn't do anything.

The front door girl and I thought the one boy was joking, since he's known for that, but it turns out he wasn't.

Anyway, the hawk was still in the tire bay when I left last night. And I don't think he was going anywhere anytime soon. He was warm in there, and it was cold outside.

Okay, so that's not completely true, otherwise I wouldn't be on this site ten times a day (like I am at this ungodly hour), but it's pretty close right now. Why? Because I've been scammed on Craig's List, which was my last hope for finding a job. Okay, so it was more like my second-to-last hope for finding a job.

Here's what happened. I sent an email regarding a receptionist position for a vet clinic that, I realize now,probably doesn't exist. I even typed up my very first cover letter and SIGNED the email using my tablet (you know, to make it look more professional).

What tipped me off that it was a scam? The email was a gmail account, and, after seeing a warning about Craig's List posters who use gmail, I checked it out. I feel so sick about it. At least they didn't get my social security number. Although, I'll probably end up with more than the usual amount of spam on my computer. So much for getting a new email address.

Moral: Don't trust Craig's List when looking for a job, especially if you have to reply to a gmail account. And if you get an email asking you for personal information that you wouldn't normally write in a paper application (including cell phone number), just walk away. I've learned my lesson...I hope.

That pretty much sums up my life right now.

And I'm sick of job hunting (not that I've been trying as hard as I should be). It's just so hard to find a job in northeastern Ohio where I can actually use my degree.

Now, don't get me wrong, I have a part-time job at a regional wholesale club at the moment, but it's just not gonna cut it after Christmas is over, especially since they refuse to hire cashiers for full-time. Which is what I am...a cashier, and front door loss prevention, and gas station attendant, and self-check out clerk...among everything else.

I need the full-time work to start paying off my student loans, which are going to be the death of my social life come November. My career advisor suggested going to a temp agency...tried that, and they don't want anything to do with me because I don't have any experience. I've looked in the newspapers (completely useless) and online (Monster is a piece of crap. I don't know how ANYONE can find a job through that site. However, I've recently discovered that Craig's List has local job listings on it...lots of them. So, I have to keep trying on there.).

I've even asked friends about previous employers who might be looking for someone of my skill level. I sent an email with my resume attached to one person a month ago, and still have not received any reply, if I ever will.

Thus far, I've had one job interview (they called me). And I only got that much because I checked a little box that said "tell me about job opportunities" when I signed up for a prize at the women's fair early last month. I obviously didn't get the job...not that I wanted it anyway, because it was for a financial company and numbers are not my friends, but I suppose it's good for the experience. At least that's what everyone keeps telling me.

I've even been told I was over-qualified for a job I found on Craig's List. *sigh*

So far, the only thing I haven't done to find a job is to actually go door to door to local businesses to see if any of them are actually hiring entry level workers. But, I really don't want to do that. I don't have the time or energy to put into it. Plus, don't let my writing fool you, I'm neither an eloquent nor an articulate speaker around people I don't know. In fact, I'm fairly certain I looked like a cornered animal at my first "big time" interview. I'm sure I didn't blink once during the whole half-hour. I couldn't even answer the interviewer's questions without stuttering or squeaking. I'm so pathetic...

My dream job is...was...to be a writer. I don't really know anymore. I have all the ideas I could possibly ask for, but I just can't seem to get any of them down on paper. I guess I don't have the motivation. I should, but I don't. My dad ( ~SwiftFlyer )keeps telling me I should revise and extend my one short story "The Cinder Rebellion", located here: [link] . But, I just don't have the energy. I have lots of ideas I could use to expand it, but, I don't know. Maybe I'm just making excuses.

I don't really care if I have a job making thirty or forty thousand to start with. I'd be happy just making double what I make now, which would, sadly, only be about twenty-five grand, but it would be enough to begin with. I don't have rent or utilities to worry about, you know, yet, but I need something.

I'm not crazy about the idea of working in an office, but it has to be better than working in retail. ANYTHING at this point in my life would be better than working in retail. I just wish I knew what to do with my life.

If I had a choice, I wouldn't work at all, but my socioeconomic status doesn't afford me such choices and it probably never will unless I win the lottery. Even then...who just wants to sit around all day and do nothing? Not me.

Anyway, sorry about the rant. I'm sure no one really cares about my work woes. I just needed to get it out. This is probably the most I've written in a long time, too. And hopefully, it won't be the last.

Anyway, I was sitting at home watching Lifetime and I kept hearing these noises, like a high-pitched eek, eek, eek. Finally, it got so loud that it sounded like it was in the room. So, my mom and I went outside and followed the cries across the street thinking that we would find a bird in the tree or possibly on the ground. But when we got over there, we discovered that there was a baby squirrel squeaking his head off because he had fallen out of his nest in the tree. Then we noticed another one, curled up on the ground a few feet away. Their eyes weren't even open yet!

The second one didn't look like he was doing too well, because when my neighbor poked it with his finger, he barely moved.

Mama Squirrel was watching closely, though. However, she was stuck in the tree due to the high winds. When she finally got down from the tree, she ran immediately to the backyard.

At this point, I wasn't sure whether she would abandon them or not, so I kept a watchful eye on them and waited for Mama Squirrel to return. If she did. I even made up a box lined with paper towels and tissues to put the babies in in the event I would have to call the game warden.

After a while, Mama Squirrel returned and took one of the babies with her. And after a while longer, when she still hadn't come back for the other, I went over to check on it.

The poor little dear was curled up, under some more twigs that had fallen since I'd first gone over there with my mom. So, wearing a pair of gloves, I picked up the squirrel, fearing the worst. But he started screaming that high pitched eek, eek, eek of his and I put him down, near the base of a smaller tree where no other branches could fall on him. And then I waited some more for Mama Squirrel to return.

Never fear, though, because she did come back. Even bringing the other baby, which she had already taken, with her. It soon got dark, and as far as I can tell, she was able to find a safe place for her babies.

For instance, I found the book Seeing Redd, the sequel to the Looking Glass Wars, for only $3.99 there! It would have been $18.00 at the bookstore. Okay, so, it's Labor Day Weekend. Which means Labor Day is Monday, September 1. And I've only read nine books out of my goal of 20. I've just been so busy doing other things that I didn't really get to sit down and read like I'd wanted to. Not to mention I've run out of books to read. And I don't have any money left to go out and buy more. I've bought a few new books this summer and a few movies, too, but they're just so expensive. Some of the books I want to buy cost more than the movies!

Maybe I'll have to start a Winter Reading List. At least I'll have more time indoors.

First on my list is to find a full-time job, though. I've been out of school for almost four months now and I have yet to apply to more than one job, which I did last week only to find out that I put the wrong company's name in the Objective on my resume. It makes me sad. Supposedly, the company I applied to will send me notice whether I get an interview with them or not. Cross your fingers for me, please!

Yes, I finished reading my eighth book. Three days ago actually. I highly recommend the book Bass Ackwards and Belly Up to anyone who loves the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. I think you'd probably like it. It was very entertaining. I wish I had half the guts the four girls in that book had.

And I've started my ninth book, Red Scarf Girl, which is a memoir of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Non-fiction people! I usually don't tread on such realistic ground. But so far, so good. It was on my little sister's summer reading list. We'll see whose choice is better. Hahahahaha!

Michael Phelps is a god.

Started Weight Watchers last Tuesday. So far, I've lost 3.5 pounds. Yay me! It was really hard to start out. I'm used to eating a lot more. I'm hoping to lose twenty pounds, or more, by Christmas.

I'm also hoping to have a full-time job before my student loans come in November. Like that's gonna happen.

And today, some woman in my checkout line at Wholesale Club X accused me of stealing a quarter!!! In fact, she literally grabbed my hand and started prying my fingers open to see if I was HIDING it! I can't make this stuff up. If you ask me, I think she might have been a bit off her rocker. But that was just icing on the cake compared to the lady who paid me in nearly $100 worth of singles.

Here's what happened.

My mom was given two free tickets by my aunt (both comp seats my aunt had gotten from someone SHE knew)to the Bryan Adams/Rod Stewart concert at Blossom last night. My mom planned on using them for herself and my little sister.

But I wanted to go too, so I was just going to buy mine at the gate. I was so worried I wouldn't be able to get one, being that by the time we made the 45 minute drive to Peninsula from Parma there was only a half-hour before the concert started. But we made the long hike from the parking lot to the stage area anyway. Mom kept insisting there would be seats. They were lawn tickets, after all.

On our way we were stopped by a scalper who told us that tickets were $47.50 at the gate (which they were) and he was selling them for $35.00. We decided to pass, because for one thing I didn't have any cash on me, and for another I didn't trust him as far as I could throw him. I didn't think they were supposed to be selling them anyway. So, we moved on to the gate and watched another scalper get caught after approaching someone.

By this time I was sure there were seats left (lawn, duh), and I was ready to fork over the nearly fifty bucks when a woman approached us much closer to the ticket office.

(Paraphrased)

"Do you need a ticket?" she asked.

"Yeah, but..." I trailed off, timidly pointing in the direction where the man who just got busted for selling tickets was.

Mom picked up from where I left off, "they just caught someone selling..." but the woman cut her off. She had just realized that we thought she was trying to sell her extra ticket. (Hey, we didn't want to see anyone else or ourselves get in trouble.)

"Oh, no!" she said. "I'm not selling it. You can have it."

"Really?" I said, shocked anyone would give me a ticket. She handed me the ticket (another comp like my mom's) and I thanked her. She just saved me $47.50! And being a recent college grad, and not having a full-time job (you know, yet), the money would have been painful to spend, especially with bills due soon, and when it started raining in large drops in the middle of "Summer of '69".

So, we got to see all of Bryan Adams and about 20 minutes of Rod Stewart, all for free, before leaving early (tt was wet and cold and I had to be at work at 9:00am.), and all because of the generosity of a stranger.

Now, I know no money came out of her pocket for it, but it just makes me feel great that a total stranger would give me a ticket. After all, she could have just thrown it away and not hassled herself with trying to find someone to give it to.

I also started reading a book called Sundays at Tiffany's by James Patterson. I got it from my grandma as part of my graduation gift. Anyway, it's about this girl who grows up and can't forget her imaginary friend and falls in love with him. It's an easy read. I'm already 2/3's of the way through the book and expect to finish it before I go to sleep tonight.

In which case, I will probably start reading Ever by Gail Carson Levine tomorrow.

So, my summer reading count now stands at 3 and 2/3's books.

Summer's not over yet people! I still have time to read loads more books. My goal is 20 this year.

This man is most likely a serial killer or sexual predator of some sort. Deviant art staff is handling this for me right now. The man originally added me as Jere1234 and then he notified me that he would be switching to Caeruleum. He asked that I add him. Thinking he was just some nice man who liked my artwork I said "Sure, why not?" On this account he began writing some poems about and TO my girlfriend Kayla, and I. I began to find this odd but being an overly naive and trusting person I was polite about it, commented the poems, thanked him, so on. He wrote a poem about a lifestyle choice that I thought he spent alot of time critisizing for being different than his own and I believe I posted a comment as simple as "Gosh, what have you got against that, anyhow?" The man literally flipped out. He not only wrote two journal entries condemning me and calling me things between immature and evil, but he also sent me notes telling me how "disappointed" he was with me. A man that I don't know in real life, have only talked to online for a few days, is "disappointed with me." He blocked me, and I blocked him back.

Not long after I began to get several favorites and then a watch from the account !kyakuchuu. I noticed the similar style of poetry and similar interests but I hate people who make assumptions and I'd rather not be one of them, so I just figured it was another poet with similar interests. "Kyakuchuu" soon after began calling Kayla and I "muses" and writing poems about us as well. 2KL he called them-- and informed me that this meant "To Kayla and Ellie" There is a numerous list of them in his gallery. Yeah, still reading Wicked 3/4s of the book to go... and still looking for other suggestions.

Anyway, I am SO frustrated. I just got a new pair of glasses and, well, they suck.

I've had them for five freaking days and they still don't feel right on my face. The prescription is fine. I don't have a problem with that. It's the frames themselves. I've never had such a horrible pair of glasses with the exception of my very first pair when I was six. Even then, my mom told me she never remembered me complaining about them that much and they were EATING THROUGH MY NOSE because I was allergic to them!

ANYWAY, I like how the new glasses look on me. And it takes me forever to find a nice pair of glasses because I have a wide head. So, that's not the problem. The problem is that they don't fit right. The lady at Eyemasters (which is where I got my glasses) didn't adjust them right on the day I got them. So, a couple days later (after a lot of fidgeting with them) I asked the optical lady at the store where I work (Wholesale Club X) and she said it didn't look like anything had even been done with them, so she (sorta) fixed them for me. It helped a little, but I was still fidgeting with them.

Then, Saturday evening after I'd worked 8 hours, I stopped at Eyemasters and was there for 45 MINUTES trying to get them adjusted correctly and the lady who was helping me (a different lady than the last time) changed the nose pads to "softer" ones, but to me they just feel sticky and my glasses still aren't adjusted correctly.

I've come this > < close to just chucking them across the room so many times this week. I wish it would end already. I really don't want to go back to Eyemasters. And, even though I love my old glasses and my prescription didn't change that much, I don't want to start wearing them again after I paid for these ones.

Gah! Anyone out there know what I'm rambling on about?

And apparently my mood is stuck on Spring Fever.

I finished reading Princess on the Brink this morning. It was very good. I also started reading Wicked (finally). It's been on my shelf for at least a year and a half.

Well, I finally finished reading Sweeney Todd and the String of Pearls last night. I know, it only took me a month. How am I supposed to finish a minimum of fifteen books at this rate? I don't know. The truth is, I haven't been reading EVERY day. I probably read ten to twenty pages ever other day or two. Although, I think I went as long as a week at one point because of work and other such distractions.

Review of String of Pearls: I loved this book. I was laughing at something every other page. The malapropisms and puns were everywhere. And the characters were great, too. I especially love the book's Johanna and Tobias. They had much bigger roles and were, in my opinion, the hearts of the story. Johanna is the daughter of a spectacle-maker and madly in love with a sailor named Mark Ingestrie whom she believes to be lost at sea and Tobias is Sweeney Todd's poor soap boy who must keep Todd's terrible secrets or risk everything that's dear to him. And Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett are as cruel as ever--their only motive being greed in this version. Along with a handful of other colorful characters not familiar to those who have only seen the play or the Burton film, this book makes a great read for anyone who loves 19th-Century literature, especially any Dickens' novel.

The next book I will be reading is Princess on the Brink by Meg Cabot. That's right, another Princess Diaries book. I will probably have that finished within two days, though. That is, if I actually sit down to read.

Other happenings:

So, this past Friday (June 20 aka 6/20) I had to return a movie I had bought (V for Vendetta--good flick if you haven't seen it). Anyway, I bought a previously viewed widescreen copy at this local discount store at least it SAID it was a widesccreen copy on the box. However, when I opened it, the disc said it was full-screen. For those of you who don't know me very well, I'm extremely picky about my movies. So, I decided to return it. The return price was $6.20. I returned the DVD on 6/20. So, I decided to play the three digit lottery. The number that came out that night was 622 or something close that wasn't my number. The next day I had to work. My mom comes in right when I was about to get off and tells me I should have played my number that day. She had even thought about playing it herself, but didn't. I'm kicking myself as I right this, because my mom told me that my number (620) came out straight in the afternoon drawing! I would have been $500.00 richer if I had played it. And right now I could really use the money.

Moral--Kids, don't ever start playing the lottery. It's a waste of money and the moment you stop playing it is the moment your numbers come up.

Relay for Life!

Since I couldn't help out personally at this time, I thought I would share this journal with everyone:

Hey guys,

My old SBux store is taking part in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. [link]

They could really, really use a boost in donations, so I'm putting out a call for original art cards ( [link] ) to use as giveaways. I haven't worked out all the logistics quite yet, but I'm thinking that every donation of $5 (or more) will get the donor a randomly chosen art card. Maybe with a $50 donation and they can choose a specific artist.

All they have to do is email me a screencap/confirmation of their donation and I'll pick one of you guys to send them a card.

Are any of you interested in helping out? Do you know anyone else who might be interested? On the altruistic side, it's all for a good cause. On a slightly less altruistic note, it will help us beat a certain rival store, the manager of which has reputedly been "encouraging" her baristas to give up their tips as donations.

I'm done with school. I graduated from college today. My diploma is being mailed out in about a month.

The ceremony was held indoors, as I suspected it would be. Oh well. It was only two hours long, but it was the longest two hours of my life. The first person who read the names mispronounced quite a few of them. I feel so bad for those poor people. She didn't read my name, though. Thank goodness. She probably would have butchered it.

Anyway, that's all I have to say for now.

Well, almost.

I still have graduation on Sunday. And it looks like it's going to be inside...perfect (please note sarcasm). I would have loved to have graduation outside, but with the threat of rain it's just not likely. Oh well. Maybe it'll pass over. We always say, "If you don't like the weather in Cleveland, just wait ten minutes and it'll change."

It absolutely amazes me how fast time goes. It seems like I should just be starting college and here I am ready to graduate in three days. It's unbelievable.

I still have a lot to do, starting with cleaning my room, because I'm having a party right after the ceremony. Then I get to start looking for a real job. No more BJ's Wholesale for me (at least not during the week). I'll have a BA in English and I really hope I can get a writing job at American Greetings, but who knows. I guess I just have to try. The worst they could do is say no, right?

Anyway, just thought I'd let everyone know what was going on.
