We're delighted to announce WildlifeUK is now officially a group!

It seems that when a club changes over to a Group everything is reset so you will need to apply to re-join as a member. If you want to do that please send a note or reply in comments below and we'll send you an invitation.

I'm sure there must be an easier way, like a "Join" button or something but I haven't located it yet. We've a lot to learn about how the new Group operates so please be patient while we find our feet.

After discussing development possibilities for the club with Tim and Lisa, there seem to be a lot of benefits to converting the club to a dA Group, so I've submitted a request to do that. There are some FAQs here if you're interested in finding out more about dA Group status [link]

In filling out our application, it was necessary to fill in the field for who the founder of the group was and in this case it was me. *bowdie tells me that he received some kind of questionnaire asking, should Sheryl remain in charge of WildlifeUK? - yes or no. I have absolutely no idea what that's about, presumably something to do with the Club/Group conversion process. I suggest clicking the "yes" option if that's the case, just to speed thgings along. That is if you're agreeable of course. I'm not going to be taking over from Tim and Lisa in any way though. I'll just be dropping in every now and then to make a contribution or help out when I can. Tim and Lisa will still be your primary contacts.

We're looking forward to giving WildlifeUK a new lease of life in 2010. We're entering a new decade and hopefully our Group will represent a quantum leap for UK Wildlife photography on deviantART. Hey, aim for the stars...

As always any thoughts, ideas, suggestions and contributions will be very welcome. Why not think about getting a bit more involved yourself. I'm sure there's a lot more we can do with our Group once our application finishes going through.

On a plus side I took a day of rest and went next door to the wonderful Hickling NWT reserve (Norfolk Broads) and on the same day snapped a pair of bearded tits, and a bittern in flight - dream come true time AWESOME.

Wow - so many great deviations submitted this month. Some new faces and excitingly some old faces making a welcome return.

Still a couple of days to submit your deviation for the chance to be Feature for July. It would be great for everyone who has submitted a deviation to take a moment to choose a favourite and vote - but it's not compulsory.

June's been a challenging month with the changing weather and high winds in my region. I'm hoping for better during July - fingers crossed.

We visited a hidden gem on Sunday, right on my doorstep almost. Catfield Fen (Norfolk Broads) we discovered is owned by the parish so parishoners may visit as they wish. Sunday was an open day for the Swallowtail Butterfly Trust at that venue so we popped over.

In addition to the Swallowtails we also saw marsh harriers, hobbies, reed & willow warblers, stonechats, swans, mallards, thousands of dragonflies, damselflies, caterpillars galore - tiger moth, peacocks, drinker moths etc, swifts, swallows, house martins (all gorging on the abundant insects), herons and many more besides. Plus I learned that on Catfield Fen and upto How Hill (almost adjacent across the river) is the greatest concentration of bitterns in the whole U.K. but we didn't see one.

I witnessed a rather large Emperor dragonfly take a Hairy in flight and chew his face off, got a couple of snaps of the eating part. Also got cool snaps of a dragonfly larva about to emerge - spooky.

Most importantly I managed to fulfil one of my major wants and get a few closeups of the wonderful Swallowtail which was in abundance - though not always close enough, or still enough to photograph.

Happy days - do you have any suggestions for great places to visit, or unusual subjects we could treat as models for our Art ? Let's hear them then ...

On a second issue I had a great weekend. Following reading an article in The Independent on Saturday I see that my favourite, the yellowhammer, and the lesser spotted woodpecker are both now hugely at risk/endangered and suffering huge decline. The reason I had a great weekend is that my father has at least 10 pairs of yellowhammers and a pair of lesser spotteds nesting at his house (in addition to a green woodpecker - another favourite). But I must say it's a great sadness to me that these birds, and others are seeing numbers decreased across the U.K. right now, and I'm glad I live in the great wildlife reserve that is Norfolk.

In the spirit of the last journal entry please could you help me come up with some ideas to freshen up our club. I've got a couple of ideas but might need a little assistance to make them happen.

a) each time you post you then comment on the 3 posts above that are not your own.

b) we could have a monthly/weekly theme.

c) we could have a competition based on a theme that we vote on and the winner gets a feature of their work.

d) best improver - to acknowledge those of us 'learning the ropes', providing tips for continuous advancement.

Additionally, what can we do to get everyone involved in posting for the future ? We have so many excellent members and very few posters - why is that ? Please share, lets get WildLifeUK working as a community of like-minded folk supporting each other.

The birds are all singing their hearts out for a mate, the buds are sticky, green shoots have sprung and the early daffs are a blossoming.

If you'll pardon the pun my garden is full of tits, but there's also finches in abundance to strip the bird-table of it's goodies.

I've noticed many brave Robins too - which might explain the number of excellent pics I've published in the past few weeks.

Oh dear, I have just noticed that our subscription has elapsed for the group, which is disappointing.

As the father of a newly born and 2 others, and as I recently subscribed personally, I'm a little short after Christmas (Damnit).

Is there any kind soul who would be prepared to assist with the cost of subscription for our group ? I'll sort the next few weeks but if anyone would be prepared to help out I would be eternally grateful.

What a joy the past couple of weeks have been. Although I haven't had much opportunity to update the group, I have been spending more time outside with the kids and our cameras.

Last week I was surrounded by a group (about 20) of long-tailed tits, less than a hundred yards from home and managed to get a couple of pictures. I also spotted a pair of grey herons together, which I've never seen before. Also a huge murder of rooks has decended on my home village and I love rooks.

Baby still not made an appearance, late now, but we've sent the kids to my mum's so we can relax a little - and I can update.

Please accept my abject apologies, I have been a little slack and not updated for over a week. Little chillipope #3 is due on Xmas Day so I've been doing all those jobs my pregnant and nesting wife needs doing before the big day.

Between trying to tie everything up at work and home I've not spent much time either with my camera (ahhh) or on deviant. As I'm trying to do the admin solo right now there's only so much time available.

I've been trying to catch some pesky long-tailed tits at play on the nearby Hickling Reserve, with little luck so far - but I've seen evidence Cycose perserverance has paid off. If you'll pardon the pun - my garden is full of tits just now, even long-tailed but regardless of hours spent hiding under a netting hide I can't get a single good shot.

Please please submit more nature observances from this period, autumn makes me gloomy but your work will no doubt cheer me through my disorder.

Hello again

Judging from the response to the poll, there appears to be a fair number of members and friends of the club who would like to keep WildlifeUK specifically as a UK Wildlife Photography club and also a fair number who would be interested in expanding it's scope to include a wider range of Natural subjects and other artistic mediums too.

The solution - two clubs.

From 1st October WildlifeUK will go back to being a club specifically for UK Wildlife Photography only.

A new club

is now open to anyone who would like to submit deviations in any other medium and in any area directly pertaining to Nature in the UK. The club will be based on the same fundamental rule we have here All subjects must be wild, free and right here in the British Isles.

If you've already submitted paintings to WildlifeUK, please don't worry that's fine but I would ask that from now on - assuming you want to join UKNature - you submit them there instead. It seems the best way to keep everyone happy and the two clubs will remain very closely related.

Hello Everyone

I don't know if you've noticed but WildlifeUK seems to be evolving. It used to be a club solely for UK Wildlife Photography and that's been really great so far but somehow I feel the club has needed to expand it's horizons a bit further. Recently we started to allow submissions of any wildlife based Art and we've seen some wonderful submissions by new members.

Now, I've been thinking - a dangerous thing I know

- that even those parameters seem a bit confining. My feeling is that the club seems to be developing into one that wants to cover UK Nature more expansively. One that can include Natural Landscape photography and Art and perhaps Poetry too. Maybe even Articles on our Natural Traditions and where to find Wild Food (plant based only there). Basically everything that is Natural and Native to the British Isles. What do you think?

I've registered a new username ~UKNature and would like to suggest one of two options. Please see attached Poll for the suggestions and a chance to give your views on the idea [link]

I have to admit having little time to spare as it is at the moment I'd personally would like us to migrate over to the new name and parameters. But this is a democratic club so if that's not what members want your views will definitely be heard

Today 23 September at 09.51 GMT was the moment of the Autumnal Equinox and it's officially Autumn so I've put together a few things to look out for and/or that might be of interest. OK then lets we what we've got...

COMPETITION TIME

Firstly, now that we have a good few members it seems like an appropriate time to announce another competition. The theme is dead simple 'Autumn'. All you need to do is submit something that reflects the nature of Autumn time in the British Isles. Naturally it will need to have either British Wildlife, Wild Plants or Native Trees as its focus or Wildlife habitat specifically to qualify, but I think there's enough scope there so that everyone will have an opportunity to find something to submit if they want to.

The prize will be a three month subscription to dA

Please submit entries by note with 'Competition Entry' in the Subject line.

It starts now and finishes on 30th November so you have plenty of time too

Yes it's FUNGUS TIME. Check out the Fungi from the British Isles website. There's lots to look out for. If you get an interesting photo we'll accept it as a club/competition submission.

Hello Everyone

I've decided to take Jai's advice and stay on in the role of Admin after all. I'm just going to have to stick to logging in only at weekends and also waiting till I get everything else sorted before I try to develop the club any further.

I have had a very kind offer from one of our members to help out with Admin and if he confirms his interest I'll let you know who our new back up Administrator will be soon.

Now for a bit of a development. One of our new members =Lynne66124 isn't a photographer but a Painter. Her work is so great it's inspired me to extend the parameters of Wildlife UK to include all art forms. However the rule that the subject must be British Wildlife in the wild still holds. If you want to submit a sketch or a painting, your subject must still be wild and free and not in captivity.

WildlifeUK will remain essentially a Wildlife Photography club but if you want to submit other art forms the option is there.

Hello Everyone

Well, it seems that instead of having more spare time to login to the club this month, I seem to have even less at the moment. There just don't seem to be enough hours in the day to get anything done properly, either with the club or with anything else in my life at the moment and I can't see that changing for the foreseeable future.

So, I'm afraid I've had to come to a decision and that is to ask if anyone would like to take over running WildlifeUK from me? It would be lovely if someone could step in and keep the club running. I know I'd still like to stay a member myself.

If the idea appeals to you, please do get in touch either by sending me a note as Club Admin or on my own personal account

I haven't been able to get round to the weekend submissions this week I'm afraid, but I will try to login tomorrow for a catch up.

With a new moon on Sunday we have - weather willing - a great opportunity to get an eyefull of the Perseid meteor shower, here in the UK. Peak activity is expected on Sunday night through to Monday morning before dawn, so if it doesn't cloud over get out there folks (Saturday night could be good too). Worth staying up for even if you are yawning at work on Monday.

You'll need to be a little patient, a meteor every few minutes is considered good. It's not going to appear like a shower of light across the sky but still pretty cool. If you're outside you may well encounter more of our nocturnal wildlife too. All a bonus I'd say.

Yeah, yeah, I know meteors aren't exactly wildlife but it's natural and it's happening right here above these British Isles.

Or, you can just go to bed, get up and go to work with the Monday blues... Choice is yours

My goodness July just seems to have flown past and here we are in August already. Nice to see some Dragonfly photos coming in but sadly no Moths.

I expect the rainy weather has been to blame for that but hey, today for most of the country the sun is out and the day is warm. Perhaps they'll come out of hiding tonight. Shame my Buddleia bushes have gone over now.

I'm going to accidentally leave the bathroom window open with the light on this evening to see if I can encourage one or two to visit.

This is just a quick update for now. Next week looks like it's going to be mostly all work and no play for me so once again I'll only be able to update at the weekend. Bear with me, I really will do more with the club soon though. I hope you're all keeping well. Keep those photos coming in.

"Birds to look out for...
long tailed tit Juvenile Robins often appear at this time of year. On first sight they can be quite confusing as they lack the bright orange-red breast of their parents, and have a speckled brown plumage.

Watch our for family parties of birds such as Long-tailed Tits (pictured right) which announce their presence with a high-pitched call.

Warm summer evenings often see large flocks of House Martins and Swifts searching for insects in urban and suburban areas. In rural areas they are often joined by Swallows.If possible, provide a muddy patch to help these birds build and maintain their nests.

Look out for unusual visitors such as Little Owls turning up unexpectedly in gardens. These may be non-breeding birds or young birds that have left their usual breeding areas."

Hello Everyone

This is just to let you know that as far as my personal account is concerned I'm taking a short break from deviantART - things to change, stuff to do, and I need to find myself a full time job too. I don't plan to be away too long, just a few weeks and hopefully I'll come back with some fresh photos to submit. If I don't do this I'll never get things done. I often plan to spend just an hour online and end up spending the whole day responding and replying to stuff.

I don't intend to let *WildlifeUK slip though so I will log in every weekend to add new submissions etc. I hope you'll all just contribute as usual but bear with me as far as updates are concerned.

Really looking forward to seeing those Moth and Dragonfly photos again this year. I'm hoping they will help me to learn to recognise the species.

Since the majority of people responding would like us to have competitions, hopefully we should be able to run another one a little later this year. To be honest 9 submissions wouldn't really make for much of a competition though so lets see what happens if the club grows any bigger in the next few months.

Hello everyone,

First, my apologies for not getting your submissions up as quickly as I used to be able to. I have new commitments that take me away from the PC and dA a lot more than before. Sometimes I think I have a little time slot I can use to get club things done but then find dA grinds to a halt and the window of opportunity closes again

Next, an update on the poll. So far we've had 14 poll responses and 2 comments. On the whole the results to date show that members are still interested in competitions. I'm going to close the poll on Saturday night and go with whatever the majority votes show then, so if you haven't had your say and would like to be heard, please do so before then.

Well, we've had just one person comment on the announcement of the new competition and there were no submissions for the last one at all, which frankly just died a death. So I've decided to cancel the Migratory Bird Day Competition, with my apologies to anyone who was actually interested in taking part.

To be honest from my point of view I'm quite happy just letting the club just tick along as a way of sharing our UK Wildlife photographs and nothing more. I really need you to tell me what you want from the club now so I've set up a poll. If you want more, I'm happy to work with your suggestions but I do need some feedback from you if you do.
