God, as critical as I am of the United States (and after having lived in New York City all my life, I have a certain stereotypical view of other parts of America) but geeeez. It pisses me off when people go off against America as if we're all one huge Bush-loving, McDonald's-eating nation. We're huge! We're huge and we have tons of different points of view wrapped up in that hugeosity. I'm not one to wave an American flag, but I do have some pride in my country. Even more than that, I have pride in my city. But New York City is not like a different nation. You can't go "America sucks, but New York is a different story." If someone is going to rule America off, then New York City is going with it, because we're as American as morbidly obese people eating apple pie. Each city is unique! So don't even compare New York City to a European city. If anything, we're like other big American cities. Yeah, you see something good, you relate it to yourself. But no. Denied!

I'm not tagging... I'm just... asking? Respond with five things people don't usually know about you, because I'm curious (and this is not a tag.)

And because I like lists! And because there are many things many people have no idea about me! Even my good friends, because I tend to not to share my obsessions. It also doesn't sound as normal in real life to go into random lists as it does in this journal.

1. I love, love 70s music.
2. I have watched old movies since I can remember, and I was a fan of Cary Grant, Errol Flynn, and Jimmy Stewart long before I even recognized that Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise existed. (And believe me, I was pretty oblivious for a long time.)
3. I am obsessed with all things Victorian. I used to be fascinated with Henry VIII, and this is the new thing. I get very excited, so beware.
4. I have a Walkman. It is severely scratched up and I used to draw while listening to old radio shows on cassettes: The Shadow and Suspense are my favorites. I haven't done this lately because I'm busy, and I've gone through my whole set.
5. I'm a romantic! I'm the good kind. The Victorian novel, Elizabeth Gaskell, roses and poetry kind. I still qualify! Even if I don't believe in pink hearts and soul mates.

Sometime in the future, after I get into college and get out of high school, I will:
- Read, read, read. There are so many books on my list. Sooooooo many.
- Draw, paint, write (For fun! What an amazing development that would be.)
- Architectural drawing from observation (of buildings around my house)
- Set up outside and paint some aspect of my yard (I must buy an easel)
- Take another art class
- Get cable/gaming system (something I can waste my time on before college takes my free time away)
- Watch all of BBC's Robin Hood, seasons 1 & 2 (And three, but only if I absolutely long for another season, because I already know how I feel about the TV show with a certain major change... I will give no spoilers.)
- Watch True Blood religiously (I can't believe I have to wait until the summer for this.)
- Catch up on Supernatural (I am so, so far behind)
- Buy some antiques (or at least one) that I can bring to college without turning the whole dorm into a 19th century portal

I'm sure I will think of other things.

Rather than give myself a nice puddle of stress to wallow in, I'll avoid the college thing completely and talk around it. Moving on to nearby holidays: I have been writing a story thing for Halloween to put up on dA. And that will really be my only celebration for October 31st, because no options been provided to me this year. Halloween just went down hill after thirteen years old! XD Two years in a row, I end up blushing from door to door as an aging teen and then the next year (depressingly) all my stay-in-watching-scary-movies plans fell through, and I end up going to a mini Halloween party. Which was fun, actually, but no, I'm not going to go around trying to make plans. I hate that feeling. Just get me done with this stupid year and onto something better (here's hoping.) I'm even more angsty than I was at thirteen! If you can believe.

Haha, okay, I had to fit one puddle to wallow in. As for my writing, I have had some impulse to write, but it's come to nothing for the longest time.

I can't even explain it. However, I have been extremely busy in the visual art area, as required by school and colleges. And I've enjoyed it. What I don't enjoy are the extra classes our school has handed to us. The best they could do is to let us go home and study (or sleep.) Many of us are stressed, pressured, and tired. I'm pretty sure we are all sleep deprived. More than six hours of sleep sounds like a fantasy, and six hours of sleep is the best I usually get out of a night. Maybe some people can live on that, but when I stay up late, I need to sleep late too.

OKAY, fine, this is a complaining journal with many puddles. And it's not brief. And so I lied. Here is what IS going right with my life: All this art-doing leads to better art-doing abilities. My family members are well and therefore require none of the empathy I was not born with.

I need to move off the corner ASAP. My house is like the axis of every possible catastrophe that could happen within a twenty-block radius of the busiest avenue. WeÂve got fires, car crashes, abusive relationships, loud break-ups, and lingering gangs of teenagers. Mysteriously, despite our borough being one of the safest in the city, they still happen. Tonight, we had a screamer. It was completely entertaining. Mostly because of the whining voice the guy had on him. What a tenor. After five minutes of that, no wonder the girl started hollering. I felt a genuine twang of pity once in a while (which I recognize due to its rarity in my emotional scope), but mostly, it was entertaining. IÂm a great rubbernecker. I was definitely having a Rear Window moment. If it had been physically abusive, though, I do have a bell. It is useful in all contexts, from frightening the local rapist, to calling the household to dinner. (Both extremely hypothetical situations.)

I have nothing against Ellen Page, but I can't see her as a convincing Jane Eyre. I am really particular about who I have playing my great literary heroines! They're going to have to go crazy on her hair/makeup/wardrobe for that. The director of this movie was the director of The Other Boleyn Girl.

That was a catastrophe. Wow, Henry VIII woke up one day, and suddenly *miracle dust* *miracle dust* he is a hundred pounds thinner, hot, with Natalie Portman on his arm. I know. That actually happened.

Very few movies are faithful when books and history require that an average looking character be called in. Understandably. The Other Boleyn just wasn't a good movie. I don't mind historically inaccurate shows. I liked The Tudors. But I do prefer when, at least, the woman isn't gorgeous.

The 2006 Jane Eyre was actually great about that, because Ruth Wilson looked like a normal person. Toby Stephens can't pull off ugly, but he did a good gruff. He has unique features that can be used for a Rochester, and they made his hair look rabid enough. O.o

Oh, another movie I wasn't a fan of: the latest Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley. She was fine, but Darcy came off as more socially awkward than prideful. And he had this weird eyebrow thing going. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Next Up: Paramount Presents Jane Eyre, Starring Zack Eforn as Rochester, Ashley Tisdale as Jane Eyre, and Britney Spears as Bertha Mason.

I am going to be applying to some liberal arts schools on the East Coasts. Here's hoping I get into some (One, pls?) of them.

On a school-unrelated note, I notice my writing ego is flat. Flat and dead. It's amazing because a couple of years ago, I'd swear that my ego was about to pop from inflation. That's what happens when reality hits you. A storehouse of talent like dA just makes things like that more evident. There's a different understanding of visual art and writing, but the literature community's talent is comparable to that of the visual art community's. Talent, okay? I don't expect those bakery-posed cosplayers to appear in literature form on my front page. Oh yeah, the next day, WHAM, epic fight tears dA apart as the Lit Nazis face off with the Pens and Pencils of the visual art community. ANIME SIMPSONS v. GUIDE TO POPULARITY! September 11th will always be a time of remembrance for me. I have my story, as do many others, but my experiences happened as a faint, puzzle-piece perspective of what truly occurred. Looking back at that day, I still see it through ten-year-old eye, but as I grow older, its emotional significance develops and deepens.

I would like to take a quote from David Foster Wallace's article, The View From Mrs. Thompson's, which describes the horrors of that day as seen on CBS video footage:

Â... when I came in everybody was staring in transfixed horror at one of the very few pieces of video CBS never reran, which was a distant wide-angle shot of the North Tower and its top floors' exposed steel lattice in flames and of dots detaching from the building and moving through smoke down the screen, which then that jerky tightening of the shot revealed to be actual people in coats and ties and skirts with their shoes falling off as they fell, some hanging onto ledges or girders and then letting go, upside-down or writhing as they fell and one couple almost seeming (unverifiable) to be hugging each other as they fell all those stories and shrank back to dots as the camera then all of a sudden pulled back to the long view Â I have no idea how long the clip took Â after which Rather's mouth seemed to move for a second before any sound emerged, and everyone in the room sat back and looked at one another with expressions that seemed somehow both childlike and horribly old. I think one or two people made some sort of sound. It's not clear what else to say. It seems grotesque to talk about being traumatized by a video when the people in the video were dying. Something about the shoes also falling made it worse. I think the older ladies took it better than I did. Then the hideous beauty of the rerun clip of the second plane hitting the tower, the blue and silver and black and spectacular orange of it, as more little moving dots fell.Â

It is upsetting and disturbing. There is something gut-wrenching about those little dots of people, running to the water as the smoke takes over the many blocks surrounding the world trade center. It is devastating. My thoughts are with those that we lost that day.

Did I say I murdered him? I meant her. I murdered her. I just went back to one of my fantasy-worlds-and-kicking-ass-like-Tolkien stories and ended it with a page or two about how my character suddenly dies. I'm tired of these contrived, boring, mary-sue types of characters whose every melodramatic word and action plays to a stupid, heroine-romance-oriented plot point I want to happen next. Even their flaws are dull. There are always those cop-out flaws for fantasy characters: like a hot temper and/or attitude. By now, that's almost a virtue. Han Solo & uh... any male character who is rough, attractive and conflicted. No, Edward Cullen, being mysterious and hot is not a flaw. It is annoying, though.

Goodbye fantasy. I am tired of you! I will kill you until you are unable to breathe. And then you will be dead. And then you will be Zombie Fantasy and I will put you in Rise of the Undead, Overused Plot Points.

Updation. It is my new favorite, fake noun. And it makes a good "Just all about me" substitute. As we know well enough, I love to take the longer route around a direct message. And lists. I love lists.

Senior year starts officially on the 14th. Very nervous, very much into procrastinating, very much trying to go back to the pattern of good-girl-studying-constantly that I deserted a year ago. I'm trying not to embellish on my stress, here. Shan't.

Been hanging around the house since I got back from vacation. Lost four pounds from sheer boredom. That, or my fudged up sleep cycle combined with Mac access in my room.

Just finished He Knew He Was Right, a 19th century drama miniseries. I was super frustrated at the end, but I don't want to spoil it for folks, so I won't continue. I did enjoy it, though. Besides that :censored spoiler: which only happens if :censored spoiler: and that :censored spoiler: who was just a huge :censor-censor:. But that's all I will say.

My brother is getting married!

Senior year starts soon. I'm damned nervous and I have to make a lot of decisions, which is not going to be easy. I'm a very indecisive person! I don't even know who the hell I am! How do I know what I want? I realize there's not one kind of liberal art's student, but I don't want your alternative lifestyle joint, pls and no thank you. :E All my abnormalities aren't that beneficial to my character, apparent, or interesting, and they belong in the local shrink's text books. So where does the average-looking, weird, artistic nerd go to get a good movie and pizza on a college night off? Huh? And please stop pushing your joint in my face! It stinks like green fairies. Oh noes!

College Wish List:

- Medium or small school
- English a core major
- Open social community, where I can make friends at my own pace, avoiding cliques and all that high school shit. What is this I hear about every liberal art's school leaning fully on drugs and alcohol? It seems like everyone's the same, going to parties and smoking joints. I got my first Mac! It is super snazzy and useful. I am just amazed by the features that the Mac has that my PC didn't. And of course, as a new computer and a different model, it is much faster and more efficient.

I've been staying with my brother's landlady's mother. There are two houses, and my brother lives across from his landlady, who renovated a barn into her home. It's gorgeous and there is a ton of space. The ceilings are super high.

It's been so fun being here. The landlady's mother cooks these amazing meals for breakfast and dinner. And we've just hung around and swam in the lake, played with the animals, played board games & video games, and watched TV. The people who are around are my bro, his girlfriend, his landlady, his landlady's mother, another tenant, and my mother.

I'm going on vacation Friday, but I will eventually be picking my new (and first) Mac from meh bro and will have full access to dA soon enough. He's getting married by the way! I absolutely love the soon-to-be-bride and they've been dating since college.

You can tell how committed my sibling's relationship is by my choice to friend the person their in a relationship with on Facebook. Isn't that sad? An online community actually reflects a fact of my life. But it's true. I don't friend any of my sister's boyfriends. Draw for it what you will. >.>

Vampire has definitely come into fashion, most obviously (and lately) in entertainment like True Blood and Twilight, which are super popular. I'm a True Blood fangirl. Yep. I'm one of those Those and although I liked Twilight, I'll wait until netflix starts to rent out New Moon. I can't take the hormones in the Twilight theaters, and it's not fun to be the party pooper among so many fangirls.

Don't kill me, but Taylor Lautner (Jason) looks like he's fourteen. It's like they cast a Jonas Brother. He's fine in his role (Kirsten Stewart annoys me more) but he is not attractive. On top of that, I can smell the cougar lust coming out of the articles describing his new found muscles. It's awkward and uncomfortable, like watching an old lady pop Viagra.

On the other hand, there were some things about the movie I liked: Edward (Haut!), the Cullens, and then, the color screens, but in general, it was not a favorite.

I would rent it on DVD. It would be snazzy to watch. But it wouldn't compare to a classic or be on my DVD shelf.

What are your thoughts about this vampire phenomenon?

What? I can't talk like a teenager (with the necessary lack of grammar-awareness) now that I'm going to be legal? I protest you, your SNOOTitude, and I do not accept your expectations.

Argh. <---- transition point

It's ridiculous that a kid is suddenly "adult" at eighteen. I could star in a porn as of tomorrow... yuck! Young pornster example #1: Sasha Grey. Someone should have called her mother and frozen her in carbonite until she turned 24. Leia could rescue her disguised as a guard. Much better than porn: Star Wars. Ten times better.

(Note: There have already been two references to either a book or a film in this journal. Both are obvious, but no one will get the first one. I know it.)

I'M TURNING EIGHTEEN! And I'm freaking out. :l

I just want to be grateful for my life, appreciate the good things, and try not dissect what's going on around me. Birthday spirit.

Seven more days until I turn eighteen!

I have mixed feelings. I like birthdays because they mean ice cream cake (yeah, that's the highlight), but at the same time, I can't really appreciate loosing another year just like that. I'm not saying that I'm having so much fun that it's all gone by so quickly (Time flies when you're having it, right?), and not saying that I'm miserable, but the fact is that I'm not a child. And I liked being one.

Don't give me that "childhood is a state of mind" thing. Any fifty year old man or woman who thinks that they're like children must have forgotten what it means to be one, because balding and menopause are not childlike qualities.

It would be so much more rewarding to turn eighteen if I could gain more privileges beside joining the army. I'm telling you: the fact that we can't drink before killing or dying is outrageous.

Don't worry, birthdays always make me like this. I've been bitter about growing old since age eight.

Okay, I had a sandwich and a frappuccino at Starbucks, and I felt incredibly ill after that. It sometimes happens with me and coffee. Then (well, ten minutes ago), my eyelid started itching and now, either because I scratched it or because of an allergic reaction, it's blown up. I knew it was a really bad idea to eat at Starbucks. I'm now typing with that eye closed, because it's easier, but I can take it. One more final left! Math. They're going badly, but all I can wish for now is to pass and then to get on to summer.

The good news it that my cold isn't as bad, although now I have a cough. Maybe it'll be gone by Thursday, because I have to have a doctor's appointment that I need to go to in order to volunteer at a hospital. Except now I'm sick. So I guess proving that I'm healthy won't be as easy.

In less hyper-active aging news, I took my SAT today. I have no idea how I did, but I feel good about it, whatever score it may be. I wasn't too nervous, and it went smoothly enough. Six hours of test, then done... and now finals. But summer is so soon! It's been tough to study with freedom so close. I got an 83% on my history final, which I'm relieved about. I'm pretty sure my teacher was lenient in his grading, because I know that I could have easily gotten in the 70s.

My mother's friend has "commissioned," me to paint her a white flower on canvas. It'll be my summer project. I'm in no way as confidant about my art as I am about my writing, but who am I to say no? She says that she'll buy the material and if she likes the result, she'll buy the painting. So, sure, I am willing. I've wanted painting material for forever. I just hope she knows what she's getting herself into, because it's not such a cheap hobby. It's not overly expensive, like a computer, but it's still something to have another person pay that. It could hinder me from picking the best material. I've used bad paints and brushes, and it's awful. I predict that if it's too much, my mom and her friend will split the cost.

I'll be more available when finals end. I would love to talk to you guys. Feel free just to strike up a conversation whenever. Especially if we haven't chatted.

Some of you who read my writing and journals may have noticed that I've only uploaded a couple of things into my gallery in the last few months. Summer starts next week, but in that next week I will have both my finals and SATs. Today I got home from doing a horrendous job on my history final and I was feeling very upset with myself. Then, I log onto dA and see that Mermaid got a DD!

It truly brightened my perspective after the last couple of days I've had. Especially after last night, when I stayed up so late trying to cram (which I know does not work for me.) I may have day after day of finals and tests, but now at least I have something happy to remember from this period of the year.

Thank you so much ^LadyLincoln for giving me the DD, and I really appreciate the comments and faves. I will respond to all the comments in due time, probably periodically over the next week and a half. My finals end next Wednesday! I almost have no time to stress for the SATs. This has to be the most active couple of weeks I've ever had. Stress, stress, stress, DD, stress, stress, stress, get sick, stress, stress, stress, take SATs, stress, stress, stress, take finals. I have a cold now. Either a cold or some very consistent allergies, which could be preferable, because it might not peak. I'm hoping that it doesn't get too much worse before summer starts and that it will fade away or plateau in the next three days. Nothing's worse than taking a test with a headache and a stuffy nose.

It's shocking to see that my last submission to dA was back on December 31st, with A Christmas Tail. It's not as if I haven't been writing (which I have), but I've been involved in huge, fantasy based projects which I don't think demonstrate my natural writing style.

It's so great to read through some of my writing in my gallery. I feel almost as if a different person wrote Pyramus, My Favorite Drunk, and all the others. It used to be that I'd come in here and provide dates and information about how long I'd be absent and when I'd be back. Lol, things have changed a bit since then.

I sometimes think about how I used to be. My ten year old self would probably faint at who I am now. She would undoubtedly burst into tears at the idea that I'll be turning eighteen on July 23rd. I admit that I've never been to eager to grow up, but I could never go back. There's too much of a difference. Some parts of me may belong to my thirteen year old self, but I wouldn't fit into who she was then.

To think that my SATs are in June, and that after next year, I'll be in college... I know less about myself and my future than I ever knew before, but I know where the blanks are. It's as if the more I learn, the less I know.

I think my tutor is a pedophile. College and SATs are stressful so I don't think about them. I don't prepare for them either. I watch movies so that I don't have to think. I feel like my vocabulary is shrinking with each movie I watch. I watch too many movies. I read two books for fun this year. My vocabulary was larger when I was ten. I was happier then too. I glorify my childhood, because I want to go back. I hate getting older. I never liked Peter Pan. But I still have the hots for Batman. I'm smarter than most people. Actually, I'm vainer. In fifty years I'll be famous. Or just divorced. I'm depressed. I'm happier than most people. Life is shit and philosophy is a drag. Faith is worse. At least philosophy doesn't have a temple. If it did, I might go. They'd probably make me pay. Bastards.

It's disturbing that so many African Americans face challenges when it comes to the shade, lightness, or darkness of their skin. I don't generally talk about it with my black friends, but I've been watching shows recently in which black women talk about the kind of comments that they sometimes get. As in 'you're pretty for a dark skinned girl.' I haven't seen that. When I see a beautiful black person, they're beautiful no matter what.

Also, it's not true that white people don't have culture! Some people identify to the place where their parents or grandparents came from - Ireland, Germany, etc. Some people look at their religion as a culture. I know that Judaism is considered a kind of culture by many people. Our culture is whatever we take pride in.

Update: Been up since three a.m. and got out of bed a little before six. If I had known that would happen, I wouldn't have gone to bed at one something (Sssh, don't tell the mother.) For the last three hours, I've surrounded myself with cough drops, tea, and tissues, but no matter how much I fill my humidifier, it still reads vacant. I hope that some point in the day the stuffiness will go mostly away and I can either pursue sleep or get some of my work done.

If I had school today, I'd have to go, but I think the generally accepted 'If-you-have-a-cold-it's-not-worth-staying-home-over' should be rethought. When I have a cold, I'm damn distracting. I bring a tissue box into school and drag the garbage can over to my table. lol

Update: Life is just way busy, even when I'm in the middle of spring break. So one of the things I've been doing this week is going to a nearby thrift shop to volunteer (I needs those community hours to graduate.) On the bus today, a little girl was making a fuss, and crying toddlers and babies really make me uncomfortable. For some reason, it flusters and bothers me in a way that is probably unusual. I've always had a thing about crying and screaming. I guess if I knew why they were so unhappy, it would make me feel better, but I don't think you can reason things like that out.

The place I'm volunteering at is extremely dusty, and I organize used things all day, so right now I'm all stuffy and sneezy. It's either a coincidental cold, allergies, or a result of well-loved objects being rubbed under my nose all day. I probably won't go tomorrow, because I have several big essays to write and I really need to study for a book test coming up.

And lol moment - I was coming back home from a friend's house Sunday night, and some half naked dude crossed right ahead of me to deliver his garbage to the curb. I'm talking a medallion wearing, hairy chest lovin', good looking guy with the top button of his pants unbuttoned. In chilly weather. And there I am, trying to swerve around him in my marshmallow jacket. I looked like Violet Beauregarde during the girl-blueberry transition. I sort of considered barreling the guy over. I really wanted to get home.

How do I manage to misunderstand that my grandmother is in the hospital and somehow deliver this information to three members of my family in the most thoroughly confusing way possible. Now my sister thinks I'm temporarily unstable and my father thinks his mother is dead. Or he did for a moment, while I delivered the false news that she was in the emergency room but was, in fact, alive because she was having new blood put into her body. >.>

Today ... I mean, I'm just soooo out of it. My mother gave me one of her closed eyed responses. I think she reserves them for me. I'm her loudest, most confusing headache.

I feel a bit guilty for causing so much trouble.

IÂm still in a great state of happy shock that Obama is our President. ItÂs great to feel that we have someone to represent a forward-looking generation, whether that is the youngest fifty year olds or the oldest five year olds.

ItÂs also amazing to hear that heÂs doing something about Guantanamo Bay. What a hypocritical nation we have been Â to speak out again torture and then to practice it on our criminals. I hope thatÂs all in the past now, or currently being pushed there. If Guantanamo Bay was meant to gain the faith of the public, I hope it at least in part succeeded. Maybe what we need is a responsible sense of hope.

Maybe itÂs the joy of having our first African American President, the hope for a new path, or Obama himself, but IÂm feeling the aftermath of the Inauguration. ItÂs a very dreamy state of freshly developed pride. ItÂs not something IÂve had the chance to feel very often. WeÂve had Bush as president for eight years of my life. I was nine, with no interest in politics, and only dimly aware of a change of Office, when Bush became President. Then, with 9/11, the Iraq War, and the growing displeasure with Bush, I formed a view of politics which was very affected by those around me.

This is the first election, with a new President and new ideals, of which IÂm aware. ItÂs exhilarating and fresh. IÂll try to appreciate it as long as possible.

I'm so very 90s. Tude ^.^. I love my slang. I remember putting down a book in 2001 when a daughter scolded her mother for using the retro slang word awesome. I was scandalized. There were only about five slang words I knew and could use freely, and the author had just declared a major one invalid due to expiration. The eleven year old Katie was easier to rile up than I am now. Can you believe it?

I was eating lunch with a friend of mine today (there are tons of places to go during lunch break, but we were in Subway) and a blind lady entered. She asked where the line was, and some woman tried to guide her. Boy, did she get prickly as soon as she felt the woman's hand on her back. She actually faced the woman, who was only a half inch away from her, and gave her the rules. Awkward! The most badass blind woman ever. XD

During my scheduled procrastination time, I decided to hit you guys with this game, which is this: Simply share five things about yourself (the stranger the better.) Unfortunately, I can only share the milder weird elements of myself, or else you might start proposing solutions. I tell you, all the drugs in the world wouldn't straighten me out. Well, that's a good start to the next five things. XD

1. I tend to get stuck on toilets if I have a book at hand. It's quiet, there's no chance that anyone will disturb you, and you have an excuse to continue reading. In Europe, when I was stuck in tiny hotel rooms with my mother, I escaped into the bathroom to read. I remember more about the bathrooms of Europe than the cities themselves, and I read most of Middlemarch on a toilet.

2. Pencils. I use them up like food and water, and I always seem to have them with me. If I were on a dessert island, and I had only two choices of what to bring onto that island, I'd still find some random pencil in my bag. (Which would leave me with only a bag and a pencil I guess. What a lonely island!)

3. My fake organization scheme. I have the pretense of being organized, but it's all a plot to hide my muddled mind. I'm just an accident waiting to happen. Most of the time when I get hurt, it's just me slipping on wooden floors. Sometimes not even with socks on. All those folders can be very convincing, but no, despite the clean room, I'm a genuine mess.

4. I love really big sweaters. For me, several sizes too big is the perfect fit. The softer and bigger the better.

5. I'm absolutely the most awkward person ever. From my head to mouth, phrases go from, 'Look at that sky today. It's so blue! Yesterday it wouldn't stop raining, and now look' to 'It's really blue. Remember the raining thing?' People end up having no idea what I mean. It actually gets worse I'm not moody.

Now it's your turn. I'm interested and pushy, so I'm the perfect person to tell.

Soon to be President of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama

This is the first election I've consciously witnessed after that first two blurs of the Bush double catastrophe. I'm happy about it, but I'm trying to be realistic too. It's great to have a Democratic in office, and a black man at that, but let's face it: there probably won't be any miracles preformed in the next four years. Something has happened to our economy that can't be fixed in a short amount of time. Let's just hope Obama is one of those presidents who works better in a time of conflict than in a time of peace.

I'm not a fan of politicians, and I can't say I've ever even been behind one. All I can vouch for is what they've done, and Obama hasn't made his mark yet. We can't just trust the persona he presents to the public. FDR, a favorite in the line of American presidents, was forever attached to his mother and cheated on his wife once. Being a politician is a job, and it's a pity that the job also includes having a squeaky clean record, because we won't get the whole story.

Obama is young, Democratic, and black. I look forward to finding out what he can do and seeing if he lives up to his reputation of change and progressive action. Here's hoping. Hope is something I have a lot of. Maybe in another year Obama will have my faith too.

Bill Compton. I've finished watching the whole season and I'm waiting for more. He is so hot. The actor is British, so that explains the attraction. I can detect a British guy even through vampire fangs and a Southern accent. He's becomes slightly less hot when he's being polite. His best moments are the dramatic ones.

I consider myself socially liberal, but if you were to ask me, I'd call myself independent. I'm all for the innate rights of every single person in this country, but I guess what makes us liberal or conservative is what we consider innate. For instance, if you were to ask me at five years old, whether or not a man and a man could get married, just like a man and a woman could, I would just nod my head. Obviously, I'd think to myself, people who love each other get married. Just like kids pop up when two people kiss, am I right? Unlike those ridiculous commercials that seem think that little children will demand to know where babies come from as soon as they see two men together. Who the fuck thinks that anal sex is any dirtier than vaginal sex, by the way? I don't caaaaare. Educate your child earlier, gentler, and in a more open minded fashion. That will prevent any serious "damage" brought on by the facts of life.

But aaanyway, I don't really know anything about politics. I'm interested in the social aspects of America. It makes me nervous to think about money, so I don't even go into economy or taxes, and I went to a Quaker school from ages 7 to 12. We weren't even allowed to play pretend with invisible guns.

Although I call myself the New York majority: Jewish, a third generation immigrant, and liberal, I'm not black and white like that. I'm actually socially lenient, culturally Jewish and Christian at the same time, and although I come from New York, I just happen to have a bad attitude. I don't want to stay here for the rest of my life. One day, I might move far away from New York, and only come back for holidays to see family.

I was just thinking about that. People aren't simple. Everyone seems surprised to hear that I like Marilyn Manson and I don't study for fun. It's embarrassing to think that when you know someone, you think you understand everything about them. I'm not predictable. I'm a human being, and I like period dramas, 19th century books, horror movies, Marilyn Manson, and really bad chick flicks.

So, I finally got my hands on an episode of True Blood and... the vampires are Southern! For a moment, I was really taken aback by that, but they actually make it work. By placing the show into an unabashed Southern atmosphere, they make it really interesting. The intro is awesome too. Besides, the Transylvanian accent is just as annoying as any other one.

In general, I guess I'm somewhat ignorant about the South. One of the worst scenarios I can imagine is to be put into a tiny room with ten very Republican, Christian, Southerners. I mean, there's a huge culture barrier, and it would be such a surreal experience to be put in that predicament after coming from the most liberal city ever. I'm not outspoken about my opinions, but it'd slip out anyway.

I'd like to hear what conservative Southerners think about liberal Northerners. There is that huge liberal/conservative element that seem to sum up the basic political beliefs of Americans. I think I could definitely get along with certain Southerners. In the same way, I wouldn't be able to put up with certain conservatives. I can deal with moderates. I think I could survive in the South in the cities.

I loved North and South with Daniela Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage when I watched it. It inspired me to read the book, which I finished last night, and now I canÂt stand the way Daniela Denby-Ashe plays Margaret. Her faltering way of speaking and that half blinking she does drive me crazy because I donÂt see the Margaret I read about. Also, now the extreme differences between the movie and the book bug me. I loved the book. The last two pages are two of the most touching IÂve ever read!

People say that you should read the book before you see the movieÂ but if you really want to appreciate a movie, see it first. I seriously canÂt watch North and South without criticizing it now.

I need to get out of all this city one day. I've always thought of myself as a born New Yorker, but I'm really not. The only thing New York about me is knowing that the four places I'll ever truly want to go - library, theatre, pizza place, and blockbuster - are within five blocks of me. Besides that, the largeness of it all is a bit depressing. You know that a person is completely alone on a train when no one says bless you when they sneeze. It's such a cold fact that we're so close and no one has any connection to each other.

I was thinking about joining the Peace Corps. some time maybe after college or between educations. I just can't get stuck in America - going from high school, to college, to some office job, and then getting married, having kids, getting divorced, and getting old.

I'd rather go to some remote village a hundred miles from a hospital and teach seven children English than stay here forever, without anything happening at all. The grimier and remoter the better.

In other extremely related news, I've decided to cast Edward Norton as John Thornton in my imaginary movie version of North and South (by Elizabeth Gaskell.) I think Margaret will be... me. Definitely me. I've gotten this down so far:

Thornton: Miss Hale, I hope that your father and mother are well.

Me: Oh yes, thank you for asking. *cough* Perhaps you'd like to come upstairs for a cup of coffee and some sex? *cough* And how is your mother?

Thornton: Pardon me?

Me: Hm? Oh. nothing. Are you alright? You look rather pale.

And at this point, he faints, because those 19th century folks are always falling all over the place. Although usually, the guy is supposed to hint at sex and the girl is supposed to be unconscious.

... >.> No?

I thought I'd take some time this holiday to talk about my Hanukkah traditions. I'm sure you know all about Christmas, but maybe you don't know so much about Hanukkah, the holiday I celebrate.

First of all, it's true that it's turned into a very secular holiday. At most sites, you'll find that the gift giving is added on by many families. I get a gift each of the eight days (and I'm not complaining!)

Each day after sun down, we light the menorah, which has nine candles. The ninth, the shammus, is at a different height than the others. We light it first and we use it to light all the other candles. We also recite a prayer:

Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam
Blessed are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe

asher kidishanu b'mitz'votav v'tzivanu
Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us

l'had'lik neir shel Chanukah. (Amein)
to light the lights of Chanukkah. (Amen)

There are other prayers, but we only use that one. I don't even know the whole thing, although I've been intending to learn all my life. XD

Other than that, we eat latkas and once we made jelly doughnuts. We also play with the dreidal and "gamble" for chocolate coins.

Winter break is coming up, and I'll have some extra time to read. I would love to get some suggestions! I'll give you some idea about what I usually read, and you can go from there.

Favorite Genres/Categories: Period romance novels (To clarify what I mean by this: anything written in the 19th century. I'm not talking modern romance novels.), Horror (I don't get scared very easily, but I like Stephen King)

Favorite Book/s: Jane Eyre (After Dracula)

What I'm looking for: Probably a period romance novel that is as good, or better, than Jane Eyre. I couldn't get through Pride and Prejudice, although I love all the movie versions of the Jane Austen books. I've ordered Persuasion online, and if all goes well, I will develop a taste for her writing. (Or maybe I'll just have a weird aversion to Austen for the rest of my life.)

Or: Fantasy. I haven't read any good fantasy novels for a while - ever since preteen hood anyway. What is it with teen books that make them so creative?

If you can't think of anything, tell me your favorite book or books. I want to read something that amazing. It doesn't have to be the same old thing. (Pshaw, 18th century romance novels, Katie you geek!)

I was busy at my desk studying for finals, or at least procrastinating in that general area, and my father brought over a package from deviantart, with the emoticon stress balls I hinted at a few journals ago! It was a gift from ______, the Secret Santa. I don't know who sent it, but thank you so much! It's a very nice surprise and a great boost. I'll use it, along with coffee and gum chewing, to combat my stress. I also liked the sticker in the package. I put it on my desk.

Pet Peeve of the Day

I'm not looking for any reassurance. I realize that I've begun to use dA as a way to burn off all this anger and stress going on inside me, which is just not attractive when it comes out of my mouth in person.

That said, I don't think my writing sucks. I wouldn't say that about anyone who is a decent writer, which I think I am. It's just that I don't see any improvement. I don't think my writing has gotten any better or more entertaining in the last two years. In fact, I like some of my old stories better.

Worst of all, I've started a few fictional stories and I'm not grabbing onto the plot. There's no flow or longing to continue. It's not about inspiration or writer's block. Usually there's a feeling of admiration for the words which I use when I write. Now I just feel frustrated.

Maybe I need to read.

No... you don't act like you're twenty-three. I'm sorry.

I'm amazed at how many people think they act older than they actually are. People act seventeen because they have seventeen years worth of maturity and growth in their heads and bodies. When you're twenty-three, you'll have more of that. Let's hope you're not acting like a twenty-three year old. You won't have much to grow into.

I am proud to say that I act my age. Because it's different for everyone, and I refuse to compare my maturity with some college student.

Oh, yes, I am in a bad mood. It's the stress. I become ten times more bitchy. Just nod and agree. I'm cranky.

I really haven't written anything since I started The Sistrus, and I need to discover my style again. In other words: I need to regain the two years of improvement I lost writing that huge piece of crap! Lol, not to say I didn't enjoy it. Writing a historically incorrect novel, which was tons of fun, has been great practice.

Now I need to return to something modern and something I'm familiar with, because unless I'm a 16th century stowaway on a pirate ship, I've been writing about something I know nothing about.
