"The Power of Dreams" contest has come to a close.
Edit: It was a tough decision for the first and second place winner. The votes were varied, but one piece squeaked out a narrow victory.

Our winner is *LadyLincoln with her deviation
Moody, Tearful Night.
Moody, Tearful Night has wonderful imagery, a eerie tone and an intriguing storyline!

Our runner up is *AmbientPersona's I Dreamt
I Dreamt makes great use of repetition, subtly linking the stanzas together to produce a emotionally powerful piece!



Our third place winner is Destroyed Dreams by ~Sighing-angel
Destroyed Dreams artistically depicts the trials of unrequited love through a very emotive poem.

Untouchable Dreams II by =tabzthefish is an inspirational piece, filled with vivid imagery and a powerful message.

Before we can begin having contests, we need to create a panel of 3-4 judges (this number may increase as our club grows).

Here's what we have in mind:

For contests, we will divide all entries, and distribute them to the judges. For example: let's say we have 8 entries. If we have four judges, we will give each judge 2 entries to judge. After looking at these entries, the judges would then tell us which one was best. That entry would move on to the final judging round. We would then have the 4 best deviations left. Each judge would then read all four, and let the club know which piece they think is best. The deviation with the most support from the judges wins the contest. All judging is strictly anonymous.

We are deciding the winners of contests in this way so that all members will not have to read 15 or more entries. This way, a few judges only have to read a few entries.

If you would like to be a judge, please do the following:
Send the club a note letting us know of your interest. In that note, include a link to a deviation that you have critiqued. We will find your comment and judge it. This will help us decide how you will perform as a judge for ~Wordsculptors. Your critique does not have to be on a deviation of another member of this club.

Please apply immediately. We hope to have contests running soon.

How to submit
To submit your work for critique, send a note to the club with the subject tile "Critique Submission." In your note, give a link to the deviation. Your deviation will be put in this journal. You are guaranteed at least one 1's quality, not quantity. Critique work that hasn't been critiqued before you critique work that already has been critiqued. When critiqueing, please put somewhere in your comment to the writer that you are from wordsculptors so they will know that they have gotten their guaranteed critique. Please send the club a note once you have critiqued something, so we can put the submission in it's proper place.

When critiquing the work of others, critics should provide insightful commentary and mantain a polite demeanor. All critics have their own style, and it's alright to maintain that style, we just want to cover the most important aspects of critiquing.

Honesty
Honesty is a necessary part of good critiques. Although it may be hard to tell someone what is wrong with thier work, constructive criticism will help an artist improve and learn from his/her mistakes. Make sure not to be too harsh to the author; very abrasive comments will hinder the artist's self-esteem and might cause him/her to give up.

Here is an example of a constructive critique:

-Every day it is a pane to get out of bed, knowing That you my love is away.

You've really put together a good sentence; however, there are some errors that need to be corrected.
1.) Everyday is one word.
2.) Pane is spelled pain.
3.) The comma between the words bed and knowing is a comma splice.
4.) The T in that should not be capitalized.
5.) You should consider adding a comma in between the words you and my. It makes the sentence easier to read.

Overall, your sentence shows potential. With some minor modifications, your work will shine!

-Notice that I began by talking about George. That lets the person know that for just one brief moment, you are committed to them and their work only.

-Notice that I started off on a positive note. I said "You've put together a good sentence...." This George know from the beginning that I don't think his sentence is horrible. It also lays the foundation for him to accept my criticism and know that I mean well.

-You may have noticed that I numbered the suggestions. This make it easier to understand. Sometimes, people see a long paragraph and don't want to read it (especially if it's criticism of their work). Numbering or bulleting your points make the comment easier to follow.

-Another method of creating easy to read critiques is spacing. Instead of numbering, you can use line breaks to seperate the main points of your critiques.

-Feel free to put in something more personal.

-Try to end your comment on a positive note.

Positive Things
Be sure to point out the positives as well as the negative. Some people can't cope with overly negative comments about their work without positive accents.

Help The Writer
Help the writer, by giving him/her tips to improve his/her work. If you don't offer solutions to problems you noticed in the author's work, the writer might not be able to improve the piece.

Suggested areas to cover when critiquing

Mechanics:
Does the writer need to work on grammar or spelling? Is the piece unnecessarily awkward or complicated to read?

Artistic quality:
Is the piece unique or generic? Does the piece evoke strong emotions or is it devoid of feeling? Are well implemented literary devices used in the piece? Does the piece feel like a work of art?

Content:
Does the piece accomplish its desired goal? Is the plot consistant?
Was the piece interesting?

What is ~Wordsculptors' mission statement?
Wordsculptors is a writing community designed to facilitate the development and provide a creative outlet for writers of all skills and ages.

Who can join wordsculptors?
Anyone can join this club.

What kinds of literature is accepted?
All types of literature are accepted except erotic literature.

What are the differences between the types of members?
Writers submit work, and participate in contests.
Critics give constructive critiques on the work submitted by our members. To be a critic, you must be knowledgeable about the intricacies of grammar and writing. All critics need to read A Guide To Positive, Honest Critiques.

What are contests and submissions?
Contests and submissions are, by far, the most important part of this club. They are designed to allow members to promote their work, gain honest critique, and get ideas from the work of others.

What are the contests like?
Contests will be held every two weeks. These contests will provide an opportunity for you to be featured by our club. The contests will vary by theme, in order to provide an equal opportunity for all of our members. We will have a free-for-all contest every two months. The winner of a contest will have his deviation posted as the club's featured deviation for two weeks. Contests are run using the club journal. When the journal is first sent out announcing the contest, it will tell the deadline and voting dates. Instructions for voting and submitting will always be included in the journal.

Note:
Until we get enough members, we are going to postpone contests until we have enough members to support one. We will have contests as soon as we can, but until then, ~Wordsculptors will be a place where members can gain critique on their work.

Submissions:
Submissions are accepted every two weeks. Each member may submit ONE work of literature. A journal is sent out with information on how to submit. There are no deadlines, but once a new submission journal is opened, the old one is deleted. Each work of literature is guaranteed at least one in-depth critique from one of our critics.

I have an idea to improve the club
We welcome any comments or suggestions that you have. In order to maintain privacy, please submit all of your suggestions as notes. All information will be held in confidence and your membership in the club will not be threatened unless it insults one of the administrators or is extremely rude.
