I want to bring in some update here in these turbulent times of releasing new stuff, the new group system and recent events in my life. So what happened? First, of course, Metaphysis has been blown out. Well, not exactly Metaphysis but a technical preview version of it. But not only this - I have also begun to publish a selection of Apophysis variations I had in the secret corners of my hard disk and recently created. And last but not least, I entered the final phase of my university dwelling and there will be some changes in here after I finished it.

Metaphysis - or what is a "Tech Preview"
As you all know, a preview version of Metaphysis has been released (see here) and people were eager to try it out. But it was inevitable that it does not work on some PCs. I want to list the current known bugs here but all I can promise is a fix. Since this is clearly not a final version, it is not intended to give you a toy which can actually make artworking easy. It would have the same use if I'd make a screen capture and upload it on Youtube. There is still a lot of work to do and the most problems were caused by rather deep problems with the applications integrety. Be patient! So what has been reported to me?
  • Message "You must use 'Turn Windows features on or off' in the Control Panel to install or configure Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5" when installing MS.NET 3.5 SP1 reported by drummerboy08
    Possible fix: install MS.NET 4.0 Beta instead - not actually a meta bug but common problem
  • "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" when dragging or entering variation value in the editor reported by hallv5
  • Vast CPU usage when dragging values in the editor and possible application freeze reported by germanfafian
  • Instant crash when starting application reported by haltenny
Thats all I've got yet. Hope I can solve this on next update which will be soon but I won't tell a data. Keep watching the #Metaphysis blog!
Apophysis variations - a summary
As you may have seen, there has been a wave of new variations for Apophysis. I want to summarize them up here so you can check them out in case you did not yet (hey, some shameless self promotion may be forgiven - it's my journal :giggle:)

As promised, I will make a technical preview version public today for you to play.

Please read the following before you proceed.

This is an alpha version of Metaphysis. This means, it is neither feature-ready nor stable yet. As the name states, it is a preview. Please keep this in mind when you are downloading and using it.

You will need the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 3.5 SP1 to run it. Users of Windows 7 should already have it but I recommend you to check. Whenever you are not sure whether it is on your PC or you clearly know you don't have it - download the installer, run it and follow the steps it provides. You will get notified if you already have the correct version of the .NET Framework installed.


After you made sure you have the correct .NET version, download the archive containing the Metaphysis program files:


Now a few words on stability and crash/bug reporting

Allthough I try to provide a rather stable version, crashes may happen. But don't be sad, the group team will help you!
It saves the flame you are working on when crashing but data loss may happen some time. Save your flame often!

Whenever you experience a crash or find a bug you would like to submit, you can do so on two places: the Support section on the SourceForge project site and via a note to this group:


If there is a crash, provide the files error.txt and messages.log for every case. If there is a bug (where "bug" means a feature works wrong but does not cause crash), clearly describe it by providing the following information:
  • What feature causes or contains the bug?
  • What do you expect it to do?
  • What does it instead?

I will do my very best to keep attention on all incoming messages but you must be patient, not everything can be done instantly.

Metaphysis News

It is done, the first public bit of Metaphysis is out! I just linked the SourceForge project directly to my development box. I update all changes daily (on those days I work on it, tho) so you can link your development environment as well. Here is what you need:
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Standard or Professional

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

  • TurtoiseSVN 1.6.6
Here is how you do it:
  1. Install TurtoiseSVN
  2. Create a folder somewhere
  3. Right-click this folder, choose "SVN checkout" from the menu
  4. Use following repository:

    h[tt]ps://metaphysis.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/metaphysis/ (remove "[" and "]")

  5. Click okay
  6. Go to your folder and open the .sln file with Visual Studio

Important notice! This is not a release or something. You won't be able to render with it unless you write a command line tool (or even an UI :D) This part of Metaphysis is not public yet and will be not open source. This is what you may expect for early december - the real end-user software. With installer.

Even more important notice! I can't disallow deriative works from that code but I won't recommend them either. This is not the final Metaphysis and you may not get any progress on whatever project you make with that. This is simply a C# renderer with layer preparations. So please obey the rules of GPL and please at least wait for the final version before you rip my code apart and rape it into a new program. Doing else is just disrespectful because I want to share it with the community and not throw it in the throats of a lion horde.

I just prepared my SourceForge account to host Metaphysis source code. Expect to be able to grab the renderer and data libs soon from there.
Also, the release of the alpha binary (including the UI) shifted to early deceomber. It was necessary because I have some other stuff to do lately. But be sure that the shift will not be too hard. It's only a matter of max. 1 week.
Btw. check out the latest screenshot if you are interested in making plugins & extensions for Meta in the future ;-)

Sorry for the abscence in the chat rooms & forums. I'm still struggling with my yearly massive flu and am not able to continue my projects until it's over ;-)

We finally reached the goal! Apophysis 7X.10 is out and is meant to finalize the update series. Here are the changes:
  • Added copy and paste buttons in editor toolbar

  • Added value textbox and reset button in gradient adjustment window

  • Moved "Add linked XForm" button to the end of toolbar in editor window

  • Gradient now randomized when a new flame is created from template

  • Fixed the issue where the render dialog did not properly pass the default file extension to the Commdlg32-library (always ".bmp" extension selected)

  • Fixed a bug which caused some variables to reset when duplicating an XForm

  • Changed the toolbar routine back to fixed layout on popular demand

  • Removed the update feature (not needed anymore because it's the last version and some people keep complaining about every application connecting to the internet)

  • Reverted the plugin code to 7X.8 state (the most stable version)

  • Removed countless smaller bugs

Next stop: Metaphysis Alpha release :)

Today, the administration of Kilu.de decided that it is not okay that a member hosts free (self created) software on their webspaces. However, I got an e-mail in which they explained, that the webspace is now shut down without any warning (!) :(

What does that mean now?
  • Apophysis 7X is not available anymore on Kilu. I use my webspace on CWsurf.de now to host it - links are refreshed in that journal
  • High resolution versions of my artwork are now not longer available. Go and thank Kilu for that - I don't want to change all links on all my artworks :(
  • The news article of metaphysis now points to an invalid target. The new target link is: [link]
  • The betatest of 7X got disrupted as the necessary webform ("Submit bug") is not longer available. The participating people will get notes in the next few minutes
  • Update function within 7X is not functional anymore!


    • I am really sad that it is possible to clear out ones data suddenly and without any warning because of a rule which was introduced obviously minutes ago.

Hello fractal fellows!

I received a note about several complaints regarding the update feature in Apophysis 7X.9 as well as several e-mails regarding problems with flames displaying as white dots.

All internet functionalities are LIMITED on getting a changlist as this was an OFTEN DEMANDED FEATURE. I can not understand that people are so paranoid about programs doing internet access that they won't allow a single bit floating on their PC.
But I of course will explain WHAT EXACTLY is transmitted from and to the internet:
Apophysis 7X has a compiled-in constant which is actually a number telling what version of 7X you have. For 7X.9 it is "9". This is the ONLY data which is transmitted into the Internet. Download source code and convince for yourself if you doubt.
The data which comes back is visible when you enter the following URL into your browser:
h**p://xyrusart.kilu.de/apophysis/updater/info.php?version=XXX
Replace "*" with "t" and "XXX" with the version number of 7X. This data is stored into the file "updates.dat" which is located where Apophysis7X.exe resides. Apophysis 7X parses the file and lists you the list of changes you get when you update to the newest version. NOTHING MORE IS DONE!
If you want to disable the automatic check for updates, hit the globe button in toolbar and disable that checkbox. Is it really THAT hard?

Bugs which can actually tracked back to users faults (too large flame files, too many plugins, wrong plugins) will NOT be handled as they are definetly not my problem. All other bugs are fixed within the updates. If you do not install updates, the bugs will not be fixed for you. And as I actually LISTEN to people requesting new features, some accidents may happen in new updates. If the newest version is problematic for you - for gods sake REVERT TO AN OLDER ONE or don't use it at all. Here is a list of bugs which can be fixed easily by following the known instructions:
  • Invalid image size

    1. FIX - Download and extract

    2. In Vista/7 - right click on the file from the archive and hit "Run as administrator", in XP just double click the file

    3. Follow the instructions in the black console window

  • Flame is displayed as white dot Doublecheck whether you have all necessary plugins. Do so by clicking on "parser log" icon in the toolbar (sheet with red checkmark). Also check that the work path of your link to Apophysis 7X points to the folder where the "Plugins" folder is resided in.
  • Cannot open clipboard, invalid imagelist index, Access violation on start, Floating point error You probably have a faulty plugin or too many plugins. Remove all and try again. Then place plugins you need back one by one
  • Access violation at program shutdown Known problem, just ignore it, it does not have any effect
  • Error message when saving Try saving in another file, the Delphi libraries contain bugs which lead to this faulty error message

I would like to mention that 7X.10 is the LAST update. Therefore, the update feature will be disabled in that version.   • Added template system - place ".flame" files into "Templates" subfolder to extend the selection. You can turn it off using corresponding setting in options/general

OFF-TIME

I am sorry for the long off time I had in the last weeks but there was very much work to do. I try to assemble money for some things and this costs me a lot of time. But the good thing is: I successfully sold a software technology last friday and it brought me a lot of cash. Yays.

NOMAD STATUS

You may have noticed that Nomad delayed again. The reason for this are (1) my exams and my work and (2) unforeseen issues running this one on several machines. Some configurations crashed the desktop application without any visible reason. I found out about a bug in Vista Ultimate and are currently resolving it. It's the "version.dll!VerQueryValue" issue where the interop module tries to dispose a block of memory twice - if you have dealt with that some time :D. Also the file browsing module is currently very (and I mean very) slow and I will not throw out Nomad until you are able to enjoy a stable and (at least a bit) optimized version. It's not an alpha, it's a beta.

NEAR FUTURE

So be patient. There are some jobs to do and one exam in microprocessor technology in march to pass but I try to put up some artwork whenever I can ;-) And I will try to make Nomad available soon.

Quiet phase

If you checked up in my gallery the last weeks, you may have noticed that I seem to be very inactive at the moment. But this is only the half truth. It's right that my online activity scaled back since beginning of October. But I got busy offline instead. I'm currently optimizing the "Nomad" code base for the (delayed) beta release. There are features in development too, don't worry ;-) When there is visible progress, there will be a new screenshot too. You may remember the vote whether "Sky" or "Ruby" shall be the primary theme. The community decided for "Ruby". But don't worry, "Sky"-lovers! Both are available but I don't think that I can provide both in the beta release.

I have uploaded three images documenting my first steps on "Ultra Fractal 5" which I purchased yesterday =) You may look forward to more images made with UF in future. But also Apophysis shall remain in the gallery ;-)

Preparing for winter wave

You may have seen that I am currently very busy on uploading fractals. Last days, my gallery was filled with much more work than I usually bring in per day and I got advices via comment and note which I take serious and gather some new inspiration in order to bring in a new sort of fractal works which shall be something new and interesting for you. This means, my current upload frequency will be dramatically reduced but I will spent more time to make uploaded artworks perfect and unique. But I don't mean I will take another break - I rather reduce my (visible) activity in order to bring less but better artworks.

Nomad news

Last week, my study exam break ended and I got back to work on my Nomad project. Unfortunately, my desktop environment changed dramatically and I had to experience, that the current build did not start correctly. This means, there are more compatibility factors I expected. In order to bring in a public beta which all of you can run and test, I need to correct a lot of bugs and create a better framework. This means, that the public beta release will be delayed to the beginning of 2009. Please understand, that this step is taken to make it possible for everyone to use it. It is better to get it later than being unable to run it, isn't it?

Daily Deviation!

Liquid happiness flowed through my mind as I logged on this morning. My "Flow" artwork has been selected for a daily deviation. So I would like to thank Hadarniel and Sophquest for this honor and continue to fill my gallery with abstracts and fractals. Also a big for my watchers for their great support ;-)

Update on 2008-09-14
And like a DD is not enough for a month - I also just made my first print sale. And I got a work ("Unite") from me in the dA manager's "100% Quality Approved"-collection. Can that just go on - please? ;-)

Exams - Part 1

I have some very to very very important exams to do for my study of information science. They are running since July 16 and will go to September 30. There will be a break during the whole August. So please understand me if I reduce my artwork activity on a minimum. I will try to provide at least one work per week but I can't promise this. You may wish to make a submission for *Pysch's contest until I'm back ;-)

Nomad progress

I also worked hard on my "Nomad" project before the exams - there were some major changes like the complete switch to WPF code (don't worry, there will be a legacy implementation for XP SP2 if there is no possibility to bring WPF to XP). This makes it possible to add an eye-candy desktop surface which also features 3D animation and desklets. I also plan to implement a backup feature you may know from Time-Machine on Mac - with all the graphics stuff! So let me conclude what has been changed:
  • Theme ability - there is finally a design for the suite. It is called "Sky" and adapts the "Plex" theme which you may know from early Vista-beta releases ("Longhorn"). Some other themes may be packed in but you can design your own ones too. It is basically driven by XML but an editor will maybe included.
  • WPF power - It's all driven by WPF now. This increases both - performance and look. 3D visuals on desktop, an intuitive handling like "Flip3D" and "Time-Machine": it's possible!

I will do some structual work when the first part of my exams is finished (read above) and will begin to make it work on XP. I've got several VPCs running with some configurations of both - XP and Vista - to ensure it will run on your PC. Next days - screenshot. For sure!

Well, actually, there was no screenshot in my notebox. I've to make the last kirimage for *Pysch, so my to-do list won't get longer =)

Nomad lives

You may not believe it, but my desktop suite is still in development. Switched the development to C# because DesktopX is simply too slow to run all that stuff. I will not use WPF so XP users can use it as well. You just need to install .NET Framework 2.0 before you can run the desktop toolbar. Screenshots will come some later because I had to program that basic stuff to make it as functional as the DX variant - at the moment, it looks the same but only "Application" and "Download" panels are working. And some optimization work will be necessary. After that, I will begin to design themes and wallpapers and finally, the package will be up. Keep watching!

A bunch of trouble

...is behind be =) Got to run around to save my money income until summer 2009 and it was some difficult. But it is nearly done now, just need some more documents and stuff. After this, I have to do some (six) exams around july and september. Then I will be available for you again.

More fractals

You may ask why there are so many new fractal works into my gallery and not a single 3D render. This is why a driver issue slowly ate my Vista OS and I had to re-install my machine. 3D Studio is not yet installed because I'm too lazy (well, someway too busy also) to search and install it. I also have to find my license key so it may take a while until I can make a new 3D render again. Until this, I make a fractal here and there and work on the "Nomad" suite.

Deviant spotlight

~jockc is a member of deviantART since 2004 so you could almost classify him as a senior. Unfortunately he has only two deviations up in his gallery so his popularity isn't that high. But - and now comes the special - I have never seen such great fractals like his two deviations (see below) and if YOU have never seen a DD-owner with a little more than 500 pageviews, you will see now. Please check out his gallery for yourself and maybe there will come more soon =)


Busy month

So may has finally came to an end - it was a very busy month. I began to work on two new fields of art (digital painting and poster design) - allthough there was less work submitted than of my classical techniques (currently the poster collab with Pysch only).
I also discovered, that it is both, easy and interesting, to make Vector-like works with 3ds max using a camera directing face-on to a flat surface. Check out my candy series to see how it looks.
I assume, June will be not that busy because there are some things I have to do at university. Also, the summer has begun and in summer, I'll turn incredibly lazy. But I will be more active in clubs, forum and dAmn chat. Maybe you'll meet me there =)

Conclusion

Also my search for inspiration to expanding my gallery with new kinds of art continues. I'm currently out of inspiration so I have to search new. Maybe I'll find it in dAmn chatrooms =)

New work








Learning progress

You may have seen, that there are two weird deviations in my gallery which are not matching to the rest of my artwork. I've named them "Material Studies" and there will be more than just two in future. These deviations are for improving my CG skills and show the progress of this improvement. I posted sample renderings because I want to hear some critics and/or advices how I can improve some details. Maybe some of you can drop a comment here or here. You would make me happy ;-)

New ways

As you may have noticed, I've concentrated totally on 3D work last weeks. Due to much support, I'll continue this way during the next weeks and months. I'm really happy that you - the community - like these artworks because I'm really a beginner on the 3D/CG field. Some of the works posted last days will be updated or reworked for a better quality. Also a new thing: all new works are in full-HD resolution (1920x1080) or even higher. When I got my DigiMarc license, you will be able again to download my work in this resolution. Unfortunately, dA has less to no interest in persecuting art thieves from other websites - so I'm forced to restrict the download resolution and use watermarks disturbing the clearness of the artworks. I'm really sorry for this - but I can promise, that this will be over soon with the help of invisible signing (DigiMarc) and nearly-invisible watermarks which cannot be retouched without destroying the image itself (patterned protection)
Last but not least - the new journal design! This time, it's not my work. I used a template by `ClaireJones. Please visit her gallery! There are really great CSS templates to use.

New work







Print offer

As promised in last journal, I've submitted many many new deviations as usual in spring break (no, I was not drunk while making these submissions, dear Americans) Additionally, I made almost all my major deviations available for print, allthought I need to update higher-resolution source images. The most requested print ("Undiscovered") is not available yet because I had a long struggle with the dA print system and I'm still awaiting final support from the staff. I try to re-upload the source image next days and then I try to finally get that print inside my storefront.

Nomad's birth

I'm also working on a DesktopX-driven desktop solution providing maximum usuability to your Windows UI. Screenshots and a beta following these days - there must be written a setup script and a configuration UI to make sure you can use it on your own desktop. Also a kind of compiled-in protection/copyright notice is necessary to prevent little artgammas from stealing my work (you can take a look on his website, maybe you will finde some work of yours on it) Unfortunately, my second monitor dissolved in dust a few hours ago, so I first have to re-arrange my Photoshop/C#/3ds UIs to continue working on new stuff and the Desktop UI I talked above will lose it's multi-monitoring features.

Please don't ask about iDesk/Google-Live projects - they're out when they're done. So hang on!

Downloadability

I'm concentrating now on submitting new works. There are some new - check them out in my gallery. But the main point of view of this journal lies on something else - please notice the following:
  • No deviation of mine - no major work, no WIP, no scrap and even no tiny piece of **** in my gallery - is allowed to be used in other works or direct-linked anywhere in the web
  • Every future and some past major deviation is protected with a watermark from now on and you are not longer allowed to download full-sized versions of my work for a given time. I can send them to you on request.

I did not want to go this way but some people have misused the fact, that I did not put watermarks on my images because I wanted you to view the work without disturbing elements like watermarks. Give a special "thank you" to artgamma who runs a gallery page consisting of stolen work.
