UPDATE: 2009-08-10
Thank you sooo much and those who informed the Official Brazilian Ragnarok Online site about the art thief who used this [link] artwork for their entry in the RO contest. I am very grateful for all of your support against art theft and I truly appreciate your concern. Thank you very much!

Related Topics:
[link] "UPDATE2: Hear ye all Ragnarok Online artists!!!" by ~Yanilyn
[link] "WARNING to RO Artists // Feel RO Art Theft Updates" by ~PrincessChex
[link] "IMPORTANT Art theft warning!" by *owdof

Creative Commons is a non-profit organization with a mission to expand private rights to create public goods, creative works set free for certain uses.

Offering your work under a Creative Commons license does not mean giving up your copyright. It means offering some of your rights to any member of the public but only on certain conditions.

All of Creative Commons licenses require that you give attribution in the manner specified by the author or licensor.

Attribution. You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work — and derivative works based upon it — but only if they give credit the way you request.

The core licensing suite will also let you mix and match conditions from the list of options below. There are a total of six Creative Commons licenses to choose from the core licensing suite.

Noncommercial. You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your work — and derivative works based upon it — but for noncommercial purposes only.

No Derivative Works. You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform only verbatim copies of your work, not derivative works based upon it.

Share Alike. You allow others to distribute derivative works only under a license identical to the license that governs your work.
--------------------

To make things clear, I'm not disallowing people from using my Ragnarok Online artworks AS LONG AS I GET CREDIT FOR CREATING THE ARTWORK AND IS NOT USED TO MAKE MONEY.

That means if you're gonna make a banner using my Dancer image for your RO website, you may use it without my permission only if you don't claim you made the artwork but just the banner. You have to put Artwork by Yanilyn, Banner by John.

However, using my artwork doesn't mean you can do anything you want with it, particularly making banners or layouts using my work TO MAKE MONEY. It doesn't mean you can get away with it by crediting me when you actually received money for using my work for your banner. If you have done so, you either make another banner for your client without using my artworks or refund your client, meaning pay them back.

As for banners done before DeviantART's updates on Licensing, it is all the more restricted to use artworks from DeviantART since you HAVE to ask permission from the artist when I am in fact letting you use mine now that there is a creative commons license:

"Q: Can I use the images I find on deviantART?

A: All original works on deviantART are the legal property of the submitting artist. If you want to use a work you need to ask for permission from the artist, who is free to set whatever terms and conditions they wish. Permission should be obtained regardless of how you plan to use the work but especially if you plan to use it commercially.

To contact a member of deviantART, you can use the contact information available on the deviant's personal page (e-mail, instant messenger,...) or (if you are a member of deviantART yourself) write the artist a note.

DeviantART possesses no ownership claim in any submission and cannot grant you any license or permission for use.

Stock submissions and certain submissions marked with a Creative Commons License already have certain terms and conditions attached and can be used without directly contacting the artist providing that you obey the rules set for each work (which may vary from work to work)."

Kudos to <img class="avatar" src="http://a.deviantart.net/avatars/p/r/princesschex....

Here's the email I received from his client, saying she's the one who designed the new layout out of respect for me. [link]

I am gravely disappointed with what happened since John never refunded his client nor even contacted her for that matter. I am very grateful, though, for having met someone who actually respects my art and even remade her own website to protect my rights for my artwork. Thank you very much.

Sadly, I don't have the power to make John refund his client and bring justice to his client from this mess. If any of you DO have the power, please help her.

<strike>UPDATE: As promised, John has redesigned his client's website using an official arwork from RO and his client has replaced the old layout, which contained my artwork, to the new one. From now on, he will be more careful with choosing artworks for his business. I now recommend to purchase RO web designs from him as long as he chooses the right artworks for it, since he has kept his promise (to replace the design by mid-May). There may be slight delays from his replies since he is a very busy man.</strike>

Beware of John, who uses Ragnarok Online artworks without permission and gains profit from it by selling them to private RO servers for their websites. Here's the link to his forum, RO-Solutions: [link]

I was informed by my friend that some RO server was using my artwork and asked if I granted permission to use it. They were using this artwork for their banner [link]

I immediately contacted their admin to at least credit me for the work or else to put it down completely and got a reply from her saying:

"Hello yanilyn, i really didn't know it was your artwork, i asked John from ro solutions [link] to make me a banner that matches my site and i paid $40 dollars for it. In the end i will be the one wasting money."

So I'm warning you all RO artists that people like John may be stealing your works and getting profits from it, ripping off clients for stolen work!
