Nahum has fluid build up in his chest. On the Xrays we were barely able to see his chest, because all was white, the same for his heart. Too much fluid. The heart is abnormally so big.

With the echocardiogram the Dr was able to see the heart condition. Nahum has a leak from one of his heart valve (the mitral, on the left side of the heart)

Nahum condition has deteriorated in the space of 4 days. On Tuesday the vet for the Deslorelin implant (for the adrenal glands cancer) heard an heart murmur, but Nahum chest was clear. Nahum was still in the mood to play with some energy. He was fine, on Wednesday too. But on Thursday Nahum started to cough. First time I have heard a ferret coughing. It is very panicking, a very loud sound as a mad duck yelling. On Saturday he started to breathe very rapidly and shallow, and more coughing. This last night (Night of Sunday to Monday morning) he was uncomfortable, trying to place himself for to sleep, coughing more...

Nahum was a good little boy at the clinic, as always the more gentle soul on this world.
They also did an injection of a diuretic for to try to remove all the fluids from the chest.

Right now he has a medication for his congestive heart failure : "Prilium"
I am waiting for two other medications, that need to be compounding especially. At the pharmacy they said to me that will take a few days. I said it was an emergency ... blablabla... normally I will have them tomorrow.

Nahum has another appointment on next Thursday at 12.00 pm. The cardiologist want to see if the medication is helping, if Nahum has stop to cough.

Nahum is not an animal, or only a ferret, or a pet... Nahum is Nahum ...
Don't put me wrong : I love all my companions, Nahum, lil Bear, Soleil & Basile ... and I have loved all the beloved ones : Charly the big doggy, Poupoune & Ronron & Mickey & Ramses & Salamba (all kitties), Lapin the rabbit, Anika & Cody & Apollo (all ferrets) ... But with Nahum it is a very special relation, a special bond, that I have never known in all my life.

Nahum udpate :2009 December 24

Nahum has had his appointment at noon today and the cardiologist did another Xrays and there is an amelioration of 50 %

I call that a miracle !

I think all the prayers, good thoughts and wishes from all of you from all over the world have helped for sure and the very careful, intentioned and the outstanding skill of the cardiologist Dr De Madron.

Nahum had have his appointment today with the vet who given him the Deslorelin implant in last June.
It is not his regular vet. Because the regular vet isn't able to get this implant.
This implant is for to help to control the hormones so to control the progression of the Adrenal cancer.
With this kind of cancer, the adrenal glands over product hormones, the glands become so very big, malformed make pressure on the prostate, and gives pee problem, with unbalanced hormones, ferrets lose also their fur and there are plenty of other bad symptoms.

The implant is a new product, not yet accept in US nor in Canada. It is an Australian product used for years in Europe with great success. For to be able to get this implant, veterinaries need to make long procedure with government autorization.

Before this implant Nahum and also lil Bear have had monthly injection of Lupron, a regular medicine for also control the cancer. The implant seems to be more effective than the Lupron and very less painful that this regular injection in the tiny muscle of the rear leg. (Poor babies)

The implant normally is good for around 12 months...

Now Nahum's visit :

I was concerned that his adrenal cancer was coming back because all the symptoms were back : very swollen belly and pee probem, less energy...

Effectively Nahum belly is more big. And it is all filed with fluids. Nahum has gain weight : 200 grams, so 200 grams of fluids.

The diagnostic is an hearth murmur. The heart doesn't work enough strong, the blood doesn't circulate well, so for some biological reason fluids is retain in his belly.

His belly is big, too heavy for the poor tiny rear legs. Nahum isn't enough strong, so it is for that he has a very difficult time to walk, and has stopped to run. So I imagine he has less muscles too.

This Dr will contact a cardiologist for an appointment for Nahum. Nahum must to have an ultrasound for to know what is exactly his heart problem. If I understood well it can be two kind of problems : the "walls" (please right word ?) of the heart are to tick or those "walls" are enlarged.

What he said is that he can take right now a Xray of Nahum's heart, but the only thing we will see, is that his heart is anormalyy big. With an ultrasound we will know exactly why the heart is more big. Depending the case, the medicine isn't the same. But I understood the problem can be well controlled.

Also yes the Adrenal cancer symptoms are also back, even Nahum's little tits are more big. It is because he has too much oestrogen hormones...

So Nahum has a new Deslorelin implant between the shoulder.

Nahum didn't suffer even if the needle was huge, he was licking ferretone, a kind of oil that ferrets LOVE !

Please there is still around 90 ferrets who need a Santa.

There is in total 766 ferrets on the Tree !

This morning there were in my mail from the Ferret mailing list this message:

Hey all! Let's make a big push this week to get these final 93 ferrets
Santas!

Tree 16 needs only TWO Santas! Tree 20 also needs only TWO Santas! If
we get those FOUR taken, the first 20 trees will be complete!

But, what we really need to do is to look at getting the OTHER trees
complete as well! Let's see if we can get Santas for ALL the Tree
ferrets by next December 15! That would give people 10 full days to
get gifts together and sent!

This year we have a total of 766 ferrets on the Tree! That's quite an
accomplishment! Thanks to every one who has posted their ferrets, taken
ferrrets from the Tree, or sent in polite emails when things didn't go
as planned.

Many continuing thanks to Kris and Lynn for their work on the Tree;
without them, it would not have worked out as well.

Being a freshman year, I think it has gone very well! I hope everyone
has had as much fun working with the Tree as I have!

Ok now it is Nahum who was feeling better after to have been really sick with bad stomach ulcers. He is all dark gray, it is his natural color, but now he becomes white due his old age
Ok my room looks really messy, I get always great help from my ferrets when I am doing my bed. This day I was changing all my bedding, and Nahum had a lot of fun to play in the sheets, and this blue fabric is a curtain which just fallen on the bed ...
Nahum doesn't play like this now, he is more quiet, more old...

What a day !

I wanted those 2 prints on that stairs wall in my mom's house.

When I came to my mother place a few months ago with my stuff for install the prints, I never thought about this HOLE.

My mother knew this problem, but she thought that I was so bright and knew how to do it trough the stairs.

And I know this house for years

After some good laughs, my mom and me have thought of all many possibilities for to reach the wall, but finally we gave up, and thought to ask to a professional.

My mother have had some problem with her furnace or air conditioner anyway that is that guy who installed the prints...

It was a sad day today, it was the funeral of my auntie Lorraine, the sister of my step daddy, that don't even makes one year that Raymond left us

My Ferret Faq is almost done ( I think a Ferret faq can not realy to be done, but well I think it make sense now ). The world of ferrets is a big Universe and all the information is not there, it is just something basic.

Nahum and Petit Ours are fine, they have both seen the vet on Tuesday.
The vet didn't see anymore problem with Petit Ours's eye. All is skin is beautiful and he didn't make any other bruises and bloody marks, so I have decided to wait for doing the clotting time blood test in the hope he will not doing this strange things again.I hope I am right. If he has bruises again, he will have the tests, and now the vet has the good tubes for this.
Nahum has a light skin infection. It can be a symptom of his adrenals glands cancer. So he has antibiotic for 4 weeks. I can put the medication in the food, so it is ok

Allo Everybody,

It seems to have a break for my mind with my little ferrets is always something to consider in a very short time.

Bear has a conjunctivitis at his right eye since the past week. In the same time he has had a strange red and round spot on his hips. Big as a coin. On Saturday this spot has started to bleed, and bleed a lot !
Took an appointment with the vet. Did tests blood, got the result today and the results are normal. So that is good.
But the vet said she would like to check his clotting time and "will contact me when they will have the correct tubes needed". I just send her a email, I am afraid that she need again Bear's blood sample ??? If yes I will be very unhappy. It was a lot of stress for Bear, he was anesthetized. Bear moves a lot, and he is so nervous. In more they had difficulty to take blood, the veins were too tiny ??? they tried on 3 legs and on his neck. I can't believe all this. When the vet gave my baby back, I was not able to retain my tears. For me it was like he was tortured.
All this stress makes him very tired.

He is better today, but I don't know if you can imagine how bad I feel.

L A S T - U P D A T E

Well I have released this lovely little creature tonight
As soon she felt the ground she ran away. It was very dark and I saw nothing else
I put her far to my mom house, in the end of her garden, near the fence, close to the wood...

((( My daughter found this morning this little Salamander on the stairs outside my mother place. I am afraid he will die if we put him again outside, with the dogs and the big birds.

What can we do for take care of him ?

Do you think it is a baby ?

What kind of Salamander it is ? (we are in Quebec - Canada

I have not clue of this kind of creatures
Now he is all curled and don't move ))))

Update send me good links, well he eats insect alive and worms ...

* For now I have put him in a big container for little critters, with a plate of water...

First I want to say thank you to all my dear friends and supporters here on DA for all your kind words, your thoughts and prayers for my furbabies and for all the support you give to my work.

I am at the point now that it is too difficult for me to go on each page of the people who my work for to say a thank you. So from now I will to stop to doing that. But believe that I still so appreciate all your support and I appreciate greatly all the s you do. It is important to me to see that you like what I am doing, and I can still continue my work on this way. You know sometimes I feel very down, sometimes I find that my photos are not good. I have some problems with the focus with my camera, beside my camera problem often I took photos that I totally dislike. It is really not as what I have seen in the real. I am not able to give in the photo what I was seeing beautiful. I become so frustrated about that and I am very often discouraged. So to come in here and see that you find my work interesting, cute or everything give to me the strength to continue.

I will still continue to answer to people who wrote to me any comment

Now that it is said, Nahum and Petit Ours update

Nahum has had his new implant on last Monday. It was injected between the shoulders. The implant is big as a big long rice savage grain (the black rice) Nahum has had no pain during this injection. The syringe was huge, but was cutting as a razor. The vet put some surgical glue for stick the open skin. Nahum was not asleep, the vet just distracted Nahum by putting a big line of ferrotone (oil that ferrets Love) on the table and wile Nahum was licking this big treat, the injection was done. That took a few seconds, Nahum even didn't move

I was really nervous. I drove one hour for to go there with butterflies in my stomach... It is not my regular vet. I needed to sign some papers, as this implant is coming from Austria and it is not approved in Canada nor in Usa but used in Europe for years.

Nahum is doing great. Sleeping a lot, a lot of more than usual, but the vet advertised me about that. I am just praying for this new medicine help my Nahum to reduce the symptom of his adrenal cancer and slow down the disease. The only bad side of this new implant, is that it can make the ferret become "Insulinoma" another illness, a kind of diabetes , but we can control it with the drug prednisone.

Petit Ours has his appointment on Monday the 22 June for the same implant, as sadly he has the same cancer as Nahum, as many of our ferrets in North America and USA have due to have them neutered to young by the big companies( Marshall or Hagen) before to be sell in petstores

I get plenty of questions from many people about my lovely companions

I try my best for a better English so any correction is always welcome.

Are they easy to handle :

Yes they are the most easy creature to handle, the most lovely too, they love you to die ...

What they eat :

They are carnivorous, so they must eat meat ... Some people give them raw meat, especially in Europe.
In USA and Canada there is on the market some kibbles for ferrets, but some have to much grains on it, and can cause food allergies.
Nahum eats only Lamb baby food (the little jars) because he has had several digestive problems.
Bear loves baby food too but he loves also his kibbles

How long they sleep :

They sleep a lot : 16 hours per day.
More they become old more they sleep. Nahum who is 6 years old and half his sleeping 20 hours per day, and I need to wake up him for to feed him (soupy lamb baby food 4 times per day) and for a walk and exercises...

About their health or any problems :

The only BIG problem it is they are so fragile, get illness as the cancer of adrenal glands and insulinoma. But Ferrets in Europe are more strong than ours in US and Canada...
Vet visits, medications are VERY expensive and you need to think to have a special budget for when they become sick and old.
Not all veterinary can take care of ferrets. Sadly ferrets are considering as exotic pets, they have also illness that dogs and cats don't have. You are better to have a knowledge vet or at least a vet with mind open who want to learn for the best of his patients.

What about the special care they need ? :

They need a lot of care, a lot of attention, they need exercises, they are SO VERY intelligent and curious so they need to have their spirit and mind always stimulated So it is important to make your home ferret proofing, because their curiosity they can be in big dangerous trouble for their life ... as electrocuted under an oven, falling from an high place, they can climb, climb, climb, but they have not a good vision for to see far, so they jump, and get spine injuries... It is as to have a little human child of 2-3 years old ! you see what I mean !

DANGEROUS

- Hot weather
- Peanuts, nuts, dry fruits : blockage intestinal
- elastic, rubber, eraser : blockage intestinal -> Nahum ate a part of an eraser and I almost lost him. He has a big surgery for remove the eraser stuck in the little intestine Ferrets seem to love to chew rubber things
- recliner chairs (there is a lot of accidents reported)
- ... and many things

Does Ferrets get along with other animals? :

- Yes they do very great with cats
- With dogs only with close monitoring, you don't want your dog to crush your ferret !

Nahum is very well now, and Bear is still my Energizer ball.

News about Nahum and Bear :

It was their monthly appointment today for their Lupron shot. Both have the 500mcg dosage for to treat the Adrenal illness.
Bear seems to have some fur growing in her back, not that much, but there are 2 new rounds spots of fur.

Now Nahum : Since Wednesday night Nahum is sneezing a lot, has water in his eyes, don't feel good, don't want to play. He is lethargic and he is just sleeping. So this morning Dr give to him subcutaneous fluids for rehydrate him. But it seems his case is not sever so for now he doesn't need antibiotic or other medicine. But if things are not going better, it will be a trip to the vet. I am very worried.

Other News :

Denise, the Office Manager of the Animal Hospital asked to me for the use of this photography for making remind cards for ferrets patients

DO YOU WANT TO HELP FERRETS ?

Sadly a lot of ferrets are abandoned for many raisons, some are even abused and it happens to see horrific stories. Hopefully there is great people with the biggest heart for to rescue those little ones. Ferrets need a lot of care. Often very sick, treatments and vet care are so expensive. Shelters donÂt receive money for what they do. The ferret community try by what they can to help to rise money for to pay the big bills.
Raffle is one of great and pleasant solution for to help a shelter.

Suzann and Lisa ( Friends of Ferret Shelters [link] ) are 2 ladies who are running raffles for Shelters. At once they choose a new Shelter in need.
Right now they are running a raffle for the Shelter West Michigan Ferret Connection.

The West Michigan Ferret Connection has been owned and operated by Dee Gage since 2001. Dee is also a founder of the Midwest Ferret Fellowship, a Michigan-based group dedicated to educating people about ferrets and promoting the domesticated ferret as a companion pet.

DiamondÂs story brought me a lot of tears, when I have been informed about this little girl.
Too often little ferrets in very bad shape, dying are dropped on Shelters. With a ton of love and care (TLC) little ferrets are going through, and can to start again to enjoy life and for the lucky little ones to find a forever loving home. Some others will never make it. And it is always something hearth braking for those who try to help them with all their care, heart, power and prayers.

DiamondÂs Story Â Another precious life saved just in the nick of time!!

Dee received a call for help after this little girl's family found her badly injured. Diamond had "disappeared" on Oct. 31, and was found wedged in a box spring the next day. X-rays didn't show much because her right arm was too swollen, and her little paw looked like a small catcher's mitt. Returning to the vet a few days later, Diamond's breathing was labored - probably from pain. The right leg/paw was dead tissue and bacterial infection was setting in. The left arm was broken. Ferrets have a high tolerance for pain, but little Diamond was crying. Following surgery to remove all the dead and damaged tissue, Diamond has recovered well and has a loving 4-ever home with Dee.

They are many wonderful prizes to win in this raffle, mostly are ferret related, and things for ferrets.
I know it is not all of you who have ferrets with them.

That took almost 2 months of work to finish it !
But I did ! My first Ferrets Calendar
For the month of April, I had some difficulties I made 2 sessions with Petit Ours and 1 with Nahum. So 3 full afternoons ! But I am happy with the picture

For December, It was so funny. I had set up a full decor, but Nahum always wanted to go in this boxe. So I ended to put Christmas paper on the boxe !

I hope you will enjoy it. Now, I need to put my Calendar on DA...But now I need to go to sleep

Yes it is my birthday...we are Saturday 18 October, 2:00 a.m.
I don't know why and how I can change it, but the day and hours in my journal header is not the same as mine...

I will spend my day and evening to Ottawa. I love this City so much.

Tonight I took a lot of pictures of the Parliament with the moon and of also some of the most beautiful church on Welligton/Kent street. It was so cold, I am still freez and tired now. So I will look the result of the photos this morning after some hours of sleep...
