Despite what may appear, this show actually took a whole lot of work behind it. Yeah, the week before, my mother's putting-off-of-work finally caught up to her all at once and the rats themselves were finished and clothed in two nights total, in an incredibly well done rush job...if I say so myself. Filming was also really weird due to some last minute cancelations from our help and some major compromises of our....well, I guess you could call it the "vision." We started up simply enough and tried to jump right into it, but soon realised how awkward we became on camera, with Mike surprisingly admitting his trouble with improv (you may not know him, but that's sort of an event

). The show was postponed another day for scripting (while watching Count Duckula), and the show was finally filmed Saturday afternoon with my crappy-written intro in place. 1001 script f-ups, retakes, sinking puppets and visible arms notwithstanding, we actually managed to have a whole lot of fun shooting this show...though the room got hot, my asthma came back and our arms near fell off. Even when it was done filming, the editing was a nightmare. Mike tried his best to work with his materials...but his materials sucked. Seriously people, don't but Pinnacle Studio. Just don't. The audio track slid around like crazy and the playback came out choppy (when it wasn't coming out as a wall of black), making the editing really....hard, to say the least. And afterwards it took hours to upload. Oh, and this is all a bad combo with Mike's busy schedule, procrastination and incredible ability to stay out of touch.

Me via Facebook photo comment: "Waiting for Mike to put Movie Rats online....waiting, waiting, waiting."
Mike: "well, it've beed have been uploading video all morning and have been non-stop since 9:00 so, yeah. It's uploading on youtube, but it's going to be another 50 minutes. But, I have to go to work so, i'm just going to leave it uploading, til I get back."
Me: "Whoah, that's a long time...Well, thanks, at least it's finally going somewhere...try and fix it tonight too, if we're doing the promised/planned Halloween episode. Please send it the second you're back. We're already a week behind. Also, if we're doing a Paranormal Activity parody for the Halloween episode *I need to see the movie!* Can we see it tomorrow morning?...and did you actually script this change-of-plans?...and is it a review or what? You keep coming back to me with these cryptic half-answers and I'm alone in the dark not exactly knowing what we're doing. With your schedule, we barely have contact and it's really taking a toll on this show. It only "gets easier from here" if we work."

And so on and so forth. So yeah, The Movie Rats is serious business.

Honestly, looking back, it's pretty incredibly that he managed to edit at all and he did a good job.

Anyway, while I'm here, how did you guys Spend Your Summer Vacations? I saw some movies and plays, but that's about it...nothing much to report, I was just really tired of having that out-of-date journal as always.

*[Edit]. One week in and things are going pretty good! Computer art looks fun, but moves pretty fast and it reminded me how much unfinished computer graphics creep me the hell out. Seriously, I made a gooey looking "C" shape that exploded on me and deleted half of a bust, makin' him all hollow. Seriously, just remembering it gave me the willies...and I *never* use that word. Oh well, hopefully I'll get the hang of things (and get used to things) by the time we start creating actual characters. But if my 8th(?) grade class with this teacher is anything like this one....it'll be one horribly paced roller coaster to a barely passing grade. Buuuut, this should be better. Advanced Art is frickin' sweet and I love this teacher, and all the kids are nice. AP English is taking it's time...but in about a week...when I get comfortable....I know it's going to ambush me and attack with a f***-ton of essays.

Actually, there's already one due Tuesday...but it's pretty simple. Unlike the three summer-reading projects due at the end of the month.

Aside from that, Algebra is incredibly easy for once, American Government could be cool and Biology (that I'm taking now [with a bunch of underacheivers and lower-grade...kids] because of many years of scheduling errors nobody noticed until last year)...is looking weird. The teacher mumbles really softly, does many lessons a day and moves super fast while constantly reminding us that he can't wait for us to finish. ANYwho....I'll live.

The Movie Rats puppets are underway and close to completion and we should hopefully have an episode online (the big Summer Movie Review) by the *third or fourth* week of september.

And if I don't finish it means I start off the year behind in my easiest subject. XP Anyway, I know I can do it; I'm pretty fast and I'm beginning to schedule myself with the help of my trusty-dusty Betty Boop calender.

Other than that, my summer's been slow. Me and my friends filmed the first third or so of my short film for-internet-release....and because of their schedules, we can't finish it until August, meaning the other film will be put on hold.

But, on the bright side, the fur for the MOVIE RATS puppets came in! Meaning that when the puppets are done (should only be a couple of weeks), our web-show should be on track to a weekly series! I'll post the link alone in a journal whenever we start up the channel.

Also, that "mystery puppet" I mentioned ages ago has been finished for a few months now....so now that I finally have a camera (built in to the computer), I'll try and take a photo and put it up by tonight!

Oh....and I got a MacBook!

It's awesome, easy to use.......and somehow the keyboard wound up looking burnt. Yeah, I have to clean that. But other than that which I probably caused; I'm loving this comp and with it I have all the art tools I need! Photoshop/flash is going up soon, I have a tablet and Manga Studio! Whenever I get good enough at those, I'll start that new account.

And some time this summer I'm starting another "proffesional" account on DA focusing on my shorts work, digital art and comics, and kind of leaving this one just....sit here (don't worry I won't remove this one). I may still put stuff up, but I'm trying to get a clean slate to move up a step artistically. But either way, I'm not leaving DA for a long while.

We saw a hilarious version of The Servent of Two Masters, a brilliant staging of MacBeth, Death and the King's Horseman (which was great, but it a little hard for me to understand the complicated dialogue....and by little I mean a lot) and a great production of The Music Man. I also bought a lot cool stuff like a Captain Carrot comic collection, another Astro Boy volume for my collection, Lost World (a Tezuka book I've never heard of), Catwoman and Supergirl action figures and two Adam Hughes posters. So, yeah....life's good.

Sure it *looked* like the Watchmen a bit, but the script stripped the story of all of it's meaning, boiling down a serious psycological examination/mystery novel into some action movie about nuclear war (it's stressed much more than in the novel, coming up in all conversations). It added a lot of pointless super-graphic violence too; and the book had barely any! For instance in the book Rorshach sets a man's house on fire...in the movie, he chops his head open with an axe. In the book a man gets his throat cut, in the movie, his arms are cut off with an industrial-grade saw. WTF. Really, the only good part is the beginning; and the opening credits *are* beautiful and the period music was good....but that's about it.

Basically, what I'm saying is: it was *Dumbed Down.* And people who didn't understand the book can't tell the difference [and I'm not saying it about people who said it was "okay"].

UPDATE: Dogpile on the Fans!
Not in my comments, guys, but everywhere else I've seen. All of a sudden all nay-sayers and fans of the source material are "wrong" for disliking it. Everyone I say I didn't like it to predicts my complaints are going to be "they didn't film the whole book, wah wah waahhh

" which isn't my problem at all! As someone who wants to work in film someday (and usually thinks realistically), I knew that a lot would be cut. In fact, I think what they did cut was fine, they made good choices---it's what they included and changed and all of the X-treme stuff they added that upset me.

Comments on sites I go to are all of a sudden hating on fans of the book dismissing their opinions as "sentimental attachments to the source material", critizing them as "nitpicky"---oh, and my favorite---"you wouldn't have been happy no matter how it turned out!" That last one pisses me off especially, because it's such a narrow stereotypical view of comic book fans as the permanent malcontents [thanks a lot Comic Book Guy

]. Heck, I love The Dark Knight and the Tim Burton Batmans, which most people don't! I wasn't bothered when stuff was changed in Spiderman and I liked the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie even though it was way off of the book [and Hitchiker's has been my fave book much longer; and *that's* an unfilmable book]! If I wouldn't have been happy either way, I wouldn't have gotten so excited about the trailers and I wouldn't have seen it opening day while trying to ignore every problem I had with it while watching it.

Look, there are reasons why people love this book so much. It's not just "another silly comic book." It's widely recognized as a great peice of modern fiction, even by people who don't read comics.

It's insane how all of a sudden this movie is getting defended by the people who never touched the book, don't read (or give a crap) comic books at all or just read it this week, to say they read it. The worst part is, they seem to be proud of it, like they're ennjoying the movie the "right way" and that we're just being nerdy jerks. And I'm outnumbered. XI

Most of my problems with it are said here in the funny (well mostly beginning and end in *this* one

) Spill.com audio review. (I can't link it because it makes a smilie and breaks up) They agree and disagree with different points, but most of what they say I agree with. Also, that site's pretty awesome, so you guys should check it out.

Especially the villains.

I haven't mentioned it here before, but I have wanted to try for ages and never have because....they never come out right.

I'm not promising they'll go up soon, but I am trying, and when I do...I'll put them up.

Seriously, over the week I realised how awesome DC is, and it's now my favorite comic company, over Marvel (I've always loved Batman, but this is news XP)

Also, I'm doing set design for my school's production of Annie!

And if I finish in time, I may be doing the poster too. It's going to be voted on in class, so wish me luck!

P.S. I love this new look for DA, it makes my page look cool without having to buy a subscription!

I saw Wall-E last friday! First showing! It was probably THE most amazing animated feature that I've ever seen. I know that's a bit much, but it was seriously *that* good. It was funny, cute (like my mom always says) and it looked absolutley Incredible!!! I can't wait to see it again.....There'll probably be a better movie review when I stop "geeking out" and get my thoughts together.

Since I've been house-sitting my uncle's place, I've been getting to see a lot of movies I haven't seen before: I Am Legend, Borat, Semi-Pro, Talledega Nights, Death at a Funeral and the first part of 300. (My aunt/uncle seem to but every single DVD that comes out) So far: I Am Legend was really good and really sad; Borat was really funny in some parts but overall "okay"; Semi-Pro was incredibly boring; Talledega Nights was funny and Death at a Funeral was really good but it dragged at parts (mostly the beginning). I didn't get to finish the Awesomeness that was 300, because the DVD was scratched up. Yeah. I also saw SNL: The Best of Eddie Murphy. He used to be hilarious!!! What happened?

By the way; what does everyone think of my Summer Dawn (the muscular hippie otter) character? I really like how it came out, but nobody (well, two people) commented or anything. Feedback, anyone?

Also, if anyone's good at css or making cool pixel art, let me know! I need a cool custom avatar like everyone else.

How's your summers been going? I hope it's been better than mine.

I've also seen Kung Fu Panda TWICE (opening day and two days ago)!!! That was one of the best darn movies I've seen in my life! I didn't Dreamworks could pull it off, but they managed to make a movie that made my top ten! The jokes were hilarious, the animation was beautiful and the heart wasn't forced. And opening scene was gorgeous! And laugh out loud funny--both times I saw it. There'll be some fan art of that coming up too.

I also saw the Incredible Hulk; and it ROCKED. Just as good as Iron Man (...maybe almost as good). I love that Marvel Studios is taking control now, they know how to do comic book movies right!

Sorry for the slow updates, everybody! I've been enjoying my time off and I haven't really been drawing lately. But, the good news is I got those index cards I like and I'll be drawing on those! And hopefully my friend Mike will get the photos of Gertrude McFuzz, Morton and the Seussical set up soon. He said they're on his computer but he still hasn't sent them to me. I'll try to get them up tomorrow, and then I'll change this journal.

I also took pictures of my young kangaroo puppet! I have set and Elephant-Bird photos coming up too, whenever my friend finds the wire to digital camera so he can upload them. I'm also about COMPLETE:Y finished with my Gertrude McFuzz puppet!

Next update there's going to be a whole bunch of new stuff, including more of McDodd's Daughters! I lost the last few I drew, which means I might have to....re-draw them.

Troopas is STILL on it's way! Yeah, I know I say that every time; but I want to make sure people know that I'm still doing this.

The story is coming along good again, so chances are there'll be a page up soon.

I'm going to start with some quick rough drafts and stuff; if there's anyone who's really good at digital inking, lettering or even coloring, let me know. Or, if you know good systems that I could buy and use myself. I really need some help with this, because that's part of what's holding me back. I just need good inks and letters and some colored volume covers. You can use your own style, just send me a note or comment if your interested. There'll be some sample pages up soon. Thanks in advance!

I took a bunch of pictures of the set and my Elephant-bird puppet (soon the Young Kangaroo too) and hopefully they'll all be up around this weekend. I'm going to take more pictures on Saturday too, so there'll be more.

Next update: there's going to be more drawings for Horton Hears a Who, The Butter Battle Book, Pontoffel Pock, The Mr. Men Show, Muppets, some random cartoon drawings and Sammy Parakeet!...and other stuff too!....If I get those index cards that I like.

Sorry for the slow updates, but I've been super busy latley, and haven't had much time to draw and scan stuff. I've been busy working on...MY SCHOOL'S PRODUCTION OF SEUSSICAL!!!!.....THE MUSICAL!!!! Yes! I'm in charge of drawing Every Single Set !

Yeah. I also made the baby kangaroo puppet! I'll be putting up photos of all of those when I take them.

The script I started is currently on my mom's out-of-batteries-until-a-new-charger-is-bought laptop. So, it's going to be a little bit. I'm still practicing and trying out different layouts so it'll be perfect by the time I show you guys!

I just found out that there is an ANIMAL CROSSING MOVIE!!! The whole thing is on YouTube in Japanese with subtitles, for those who want to see it! If you like the game, it's absolutley perfect. I'm ordering a copy when I get back! And I'm definetly putting up some film fan-art too.

Hopefully I'll have some new art up by Friday. It's been slow because
1) I don't have a scanner
2) I only upload fanart and stuff here (I'm keeping my original characters secret)....and I have't drawn too much fanart lately.
...but I doubt that's a problem to anyone here. Also, maybe hopefully soon I'm going to become a DeviantArt subscriber; so I have all the extra features.
