Well the last week i had to study my butt off for this major exam. Fortunaltley i did get paid for the time that i got to study. The exam was for the College of Alberta Professional Forest Technologist (CAPFT). Its a something that i need to belong to so that i can keep working without getting fined. It was suppose to be some crazy hard exam, so like a keener, i tried to study 5 hrs per day for 5 days and i came pretty close to achieving that too. Kinda proud of myself for that. Well the exam came and it wasn't as hard as they made it out to be, but still hard enough. There were a good number of people there that were rewritting. And i won't get the mark back till about the end of may. I hope i did good.

Well, as it happens it is well past v-day and it is time for an update so here it is.

It is now St.Patricks day!! The happy green day, my favorite colour! Anyways yeah... The only new things with me is that I have boughten a new zoom lense. Its a 420-800mm lense. Huge!! Its about 8 inches not extented and about 12 or 14 inches fully extended. But its only manual focus and its a little tricky to take pictures with. But hopefully it will improve my photography skills and will be able to take some awesome pictures. I have already posted one picture taken with it, . And so I hope to take some cool bird shots with it and manage to work well fast.

So till i learn to master the super zoom I hope to post some good stuff soon.

Cheers

Well its been a little while since I've updated my journal and it seemed like lots has happened. Most of it is to do with work, but the weekend isn't of course. But still lots to talk about. I'll start with last work shift.

The shift didn't start well at all and it didn't get much better as it went on. First off the first day at work, I locked my keys in my truck. Not fun, and I was in the middle of no where to boot. Fortunatly me and my partner had the snowmobile keys so we can actually get around and go look for someone. I went to the highway and tried flagging someone down. The first 3 people I stopped didn't have a cell phone. Finally a pair of ladies had a cell phone that they let me use, (Thank-you so much). But to my dismay, someone couldn't come to unlock my truck for about another 3 hours. So I ended up calling someone from my crew that is working in a different area to come and pick us up. We also took the sleds for a rip in the ditch while we were waiting and ended up getting them stuck pretty good. So the end of that day we were both bagged. Couple more days pass and they weren't that great, just totally bagged tired.
On friday, me and someone else went to work in a different area and I get my truck stuck in a farmers field. Boooo!! Not fun, again. We managed to pull it out with the sled but then I got stuck again trying to turn around. It was starting to get late so, my partner went with the sled to find a farmer with a tractor to pull us out. And yes, she did find someone. We got out and that was that day. The next day, someone on my was sort of attacked by a deer. A buck chased her up a tree, and she stayed there for about 2 hours. Apparently it was pawing the ground and everthing, kinda scarry. On a high note for the shift, me and the person that I got stuck with on friday baked a pie and cookies for the farmer that helped us out as a thank-you. He was surprised and happy about them. The rest of the shift went by and that was that.

Well the weekend. It was good, the first 2 days I did basically nothing. I stayed in bed till noon and watched Ranma 1/2 episodes. Great times. On saturday, I went into the city. Its a 1 1/2 hour drive, but I saw 2 moose and a lynx!! And I even got a couple have decent pictures of the lynx. So it was a good start to the weekend. In the city I went to the pet expo with niroszyckame. It was really cool, lots of pets of all kinds. Dogs, birds, a few cats, bunnies, lizards, horses, ponies and they even had some more exotic animals, like a black bear and grizzly bear, a camel that we could get a ride on. That was awesome!
Later that night I went to the Oilers hockey game vs. LA kings, with a friend. It was a good game, and we won 4-3!!! YAY!! After the game I so wanted to go out to a club and dance or something, just had tones of energy, but nobody else wanted to. Kinda sad, but oh well. Ended going back to my friends place and watching a movie and falling asleep on a love seat couch. I recomend that no one ever do that, way too small. I was sore the next day and didn't get any sleep at all. And that was most of my weekend.

Well, back at work. Apparently someone had found a bear den in the area that I was working in on the weekend. And I had to go back to this area today. Me and Kerri (the person that I got stuck with) went back and checked it out a little, she had to GPS the site. I brought my camera and so tried to get a picture inside the den. Dangerouse, I know but I had to try. I used a stick to try and lower my camera into the den and setting it on timer to take the picture. I tried a couple shots in the morning, but none really turned out. Later that day I had to go back the that area, alone, so being the photographer that I am, I tried getting a couple more shots. Found a longer stick with a better notch to hold the camera and tried it again. I took one, it didn't turn out. Was thinking it over before trying again, finally I tried one last time, I got the camera down in there really good and took the picture, then I high tailed it out of there without even checking if I got a good shot. My heart was beating so fast!!! I get a good distance from the den and check my picture. Its a perfect picture of the bears face and the eyes were wide open!!! It was awake!!!!!!!! Scarry!!!!! The whole way back to my sled I had my knife out and ready. It was intense!!! But its an awesome picture.

And so that has been my adventures of the last 2 weeks. Seemed busy, kinda was. And man, what a rush. I will post a bunch of pics shortly after this journal.

As some of you know I work outside in the bush all day for about a total of 5-7 hours a day. This last shift of work has been the coldest week that we have had in northern alberta in a long time (for that long of a stretch), especially in November. For almost the entire 10 days of work it had been no higher than -15 C (which is 5 F) and as cold as -36 C (-32 F). And I have to work in these conditions!! The wind chill factor also decreases the temperature a great deal, fortunately in the bush I get some cover. Some days its snowing, not a heavy snow but enough to be a little uncomfortable. And walking through snow that is about a foot deep. Of course I dress up for the conditions but sometimes my feet and hands still get cold. I also have to drive a quad sometimes to get to the area I need to get to. The other morning it took my crew an hour to get all the quads started. And driving in this cold weather is terrible!! I didn't have my normal riding mittens, so my hands just froze. Not that fun. There was also a couple days were we had to fly in a helicopter to get to our working area and that leaves the possibility of being left out there if it starts to snow too much at the end of the day. Its a good thing that that didn't happen.

Well today was the first day that it was actually warm, only -5 C (23 F) Which isn't that cold compared to what it was. Anyways that enough of my rambles of the cold weather, if any one wants comment on weather and sympathise with the conditions. Drop a line.

Today I decided to update my journal.

Well, all that i do is work, work, and work some more. Mind you I have made a good chunk of change doing it. So since I don't do anything else I will talk about.

Right now I am staying at a Super 8 in Fort McMurry, it is in northern Alberta. It is a booming place because its where the oil sands are (I will try and post a picture of Syncrude site). But other than it being a work place, it is really expensive to live here, so I don't think that I will ever move up here. It is so busy.

Well my actual work is pretty good, walking around in the bush all day. Its great. Right now there isn't any bugs out and its not too hot. I get to drive my quad everywhere. The other day, me and another guy saw a bear, it was between me and him. It was about 30 m from me and 20 m from him. Kinda scarry and only I had bear spray. And I think that it followed us from a different spot. Because on one of the trees that i had to spray paint, there were fresh claw marks when I had to go back there a couple days later. A little unnerving.
Today me and my crew had to find our way to our blocks and we had to go through lots of muskeg, it was a little frozen over and we got stuck a few times. I got soaked up to my thighs and my hikers were soaked almost all day, but it was still pretty fun.

Anyways that is my current life and times. And that is mostly why I haven't post much stuff lately. Oh and Happy Thanksgiving to all those Canadians out there, hope it was good filled with turkey because mine wasn't.

Well, later

Wow! Holy man!

I am gone for 10 days and the place has change. It looks nice.

Well it has been a while since I wrote anything in this so I may do an update.

Work has been pretty normal with an added bit of work drama. Its not always the most comfortable to be around but you get over it and enjoy the show. The actual work is pretty good, lots of walking and hanging ribon. I also get to see alot of wildlife in the process too. If I am lucky enough I can get a nice shot with my new digital camera. I see mostly squirrels, but on occasion I get to see a deer or even a bear. Thats a little unnerving. Just seeing a bear stolling around while you stand there just watching. Scarry....

Oh, yeah. Its my birthday today. YAY for me!! The big 22.

Anyways, yeah.... Thats pretty much my life... work. Kinda sad, but at least I get paid. Well I hope to hear from anyone. Its always nice to know how my friends are doing.

Talk to you all later

Well, I have not been on DA vary much lately because I have moved out of the city and out of range of high speed internet. Dial-up very very very slow!! And I have started my new job for a Forestry consulting company. My shifts consit of 10 days on and 4 days off, so today is the first of my 4 days off.

Anyways my first shift was quiet interesting. First off I find out that I get shipped up to Red Earth Creek, basically a little native community in the middle of no where, and I am not prepared at all for a 10 day leave from home, no clothes, no rubber boots and prober work gear. The next thing is that I have to fill up the company trucks with fuel and the card that they give me to use has EXPIRED!!! I ended up paying out of my own pockets for the fuel ($130.00 canadian). It was not fun. But in Slave Lake (a place on the way to the final destination) I was able to buy some work clothes at the Wal-Mart, $130.00 can. dollars later I am set enough to tolerate smelling bad for 10 days. Well I finally make it up to Red Earth Creek and my boss does pay me back for the fuel, so that at least was good.

The actual work wasn't too bad. I was doing Permanent Sample Plots (PSP). I go into the bush and count, measure, and identify vegetation in a 31.5x31.5 m square. Its interesting since I like the outdoors and vegetation stuff. Some days I get to use the quads, thats always fun. Mind you that means pulling a trailer with 2 quads on it almost everywhere and I am not that good at driving with them, like backing them up into a space to park for the night. The camp that I stayed at was absolutely awesome. They had great food, TVs in every room, a lounge where you can play free pool, a laundry room and a sauna. It was so nice.

This next shift should be better because I will be prepared for it and have all my gear. I think I am going back up to Red Earth Creek for 5 days, so I will be away from civilization for a while again. Hopefully I will be able to get some really nice shots of wildlife and plants because there is lots up there. I took a picture of one flower called a Venus Slipper, its a very pretty orchid and wild. I hope to get a copy of it so I can post it(took the picture with a company camera).

Well I hope that everyone is doing well and I am sorry that I haven't posted a comment on all the great pictures that everyone has been submitting. They are all great. I most likely won't be able to comment on much other things since I am going to nowhere land but I will try to comment on at least 1 thing of the bunch of stuff that you have posted.

Well, yesterday was my graduation!!! I graduated from Forestry technology from NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology). It was an absolute blast. Everyone got all jazzed up which made for a very nice occasion. Because typically we are all red-necks or sort of tomboyish. But last night everyone was in suit and ties and dresses. We were presented with a silver ring, some other certificates, and a knife that has an engraving on it and a CD with a slide show that has a bunch of pictures of over the years. I will post some soon when i get them developed. And the after bash was awesome as well, I may have had a drink too many but thats all part of the fun.

I am finally done school! At least for a couple years anyways.

Oh today is a sad day for me

My laptop has died and the chances of recovering my pictures and other work is at a low. I am sad. You see the deal is that I rent a laptop from my school and this is the 3rd time that the computer has gotten fried and not recoverable. Each and ever time there is work on them the stupid thing and I have to redo all of it. Most annoying. Now I am on another loner that has none of my pictures for me to load and really it would take to long to put them back on to this computer just to have them taken away once again.

Another computer issue that I will soon face is the fact that I can not keep a laptop unless I pay $500.00 to the school. And they will be taking them away for good on April 19. Oh... the tragedy. I have already paid $1,500.00 towards it that was included in my tuition fees so I am not really sure if I want to keep it. It will be ghosted before I get it back if I do decide to buy it out and all the programs that are worth having are gonna be taken off. And with all the problems that I am having with it this 1 year.

If anyone has any suggestions, please say so. All input would be really nice.

Thanks Zunk

Hi all

Well, I have a complaint that not really anyone can help me out with. My laptop is terrible at picking up my local internet connection! It really affects how I do things on DA.

For instance, when I go to submit some of my work I have to be careful that the internet doesn't disconnects me. And if it does I need to wait on the one screen before I can move to the next screen. It makes submitting very long and annoying. It even affects when I look at other peoples work. It well disconnect when I am in the middle of loading someones picute and I won't get the whole thing, sometimes it even cuts out just before the picture arrives so it appears as the little red "x" in the coner. It even does that when I want to browese.

It really is annoying. And if anything it prevents me from up loading and leaving as much comments and the like as I would like to.

Well, you may be thinking that this is about the survivor show on tv but really this is my own survival week experience.

This last week I have been gone on a survival trip with my school class. I live in Canada and here during the winter time it gets cold and we get lots of snow. Well that was the conditions that I was living in for the whole week. Me and my partner made and lived in a lean-to with a fire. When I get my pictures developed I will post one of our lean-to. It was kinda rough. On some nights it got as cold as -20 C and it snowed almost every day. We only had a two-man hand saw, and an axe to collect wood, which made up most of my days there because we had to keep the fire going all the time. We cooked over the fire and had to melt snow to get water for anything requireing water or even just to drink. At the beginning of the week the water was alright but by friday it tasted alot like smoke. The food was good, we had steak, fish, potatoes, and many other fire cookable foods even some not so fire cookable foods. Since it was for school we had also classes on survival, like lighting fires, cooking, knots, signal fires, and snare, and a couple others.

Unfortunatley we did have one mishap in the trip. Early this morning one of the other crews' lean-to caught on fire. It burned from one side to the other. One of the guys got some burns on his hands and back. He had to go to the hospital to get fixed up. Most of his stuff burned too, only his camera and cell phone survived. At least it was on the last night and he was able to go home right after being at the hospital.

Well thats my week and my absence from DA, it was lots of fun. Talk to you all another time.

Well today or more or less yesterday I had some frustration with one of my team mates for volleyball last night. First off i will tell you about my team.

Its not the best team in the world we are the last in our league, so its not saying much. And also we are a new team that just started playing this year. Two of the girls are usually late and we need three out of the four to play. The captain (the guy that "recruited" us) he is a little annal sometimes, complaining about this and that even though we are at the bottom of the league and there for fun. And there is this other guy that gives me a ride home after because we live in the same general area. But anyways he has complaints on and off the court about the two girls that are always late, he puts the whole team down and it makes me mad.

I love volleyball, not entirely for the competition but just for the game and playing with such negatively driven people amost puts me down. Its terrible. I played with another team on the weekend and they were so nice and so positive it was so nice. Yesterday i almost tore my driver an new hole and i usually don't blow up at people. Ask Niroszyckame she would now.

Well thats my beef this week, people that try to mess with the game that i love. If you love a game of any kind and there are people messing with it feel free to reply and share. I would love to know if there are other people that go through similar situations.

well all as you can see today i have posted more than i thought i would, even didn't do my homework to post things. I think it is somewhat addicting when you first start to do it. You get your first comment and your all excited and then you respond, then you need to post another one just to see if you can get the same out come. Sometimes you do and sometimes you don't or sometimes you do better than you thought you would on that particular post. Anyways, i hope everyone likes them, i'm sure most people like the kitten ones at least.

Talk to you all again
