His father worked as a railman. In the first years of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia under the German occupation, his family moved to Prague.

During 1949-1950, Born studied Visual Art Education at the Pedagogical Faculty of the Charles University in Prague. In 1962, he married a young lady Ema and two years later their daughter, Erika, was born.

Since the 1960s his works have been exhibited all over the world. In 1977, Born was awarded a prestigious Grand Prix prize in Montreal. It should, however, be mentioned that Adolf Born has become famous both at home and abroad also thanks to many animated films created together with the Macourek - Born - Doubrava team.

For over twenty years Born's creations published on the pages of many Czech and Slovak newspapers and magazines have enriched our daily lives. Among other prizes, Born became the Best Caricature Artist of the Year 1974.

Born is well known for his persistent use of black humor. His famous series called "Bornography" scrutinised everyday relationship between men and women from the late 50s until the 70s.

Born's experiences gained through travelling, and admiration for historic personalities, characters from literature and mythological heroes have provided constant inspirations for his artistic ideas and concepts. Born has also drawn from his memories of the old Prague markets and the theatre scene.

Adolf Born has illustrated over 230 publications and numerous book covers."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Picture supplement [link]

Individual exhibitions[link]

Scenic design [link]

Cartoons[link]

Collections[link]

Illustrations[link]

Awards and prizes[link]

Articles and reviews[link]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Exposition
"Yes, Adolf Born is the painter and illustrator, caricaturist and film-maker, the Nestor of our graphic artists (but hardly a patriarch), workaholic as well as bon-vivant. I will not list here how many books he illustrated, how many films he made, how many exhibitions he had and how many prices he was awarded (two of them...

Adolf Born about NATIVES OBSERVING EXPLORER EMIL HOLUB

The "great themes" of graphic artist, painter and illustrator Adolf Born include travellers and traveling. The Czech public is well acquainted with his admiration for gentlemen who discover unknown places in the company of their ladies. He has honored the life of Emil Holub, a famous Czech adventurer of the 19th century, in one of his recent lithographs named "NATIVES OBSERVING EXPLORER EMIL HOLUB".

The explorer on the litho is depicted immediately after having used a well-known trick of the natives for crocodile hunting - he pacified the animal by sticking a rifle in its jaws and then, standing inside the jaws, he is having a dignified conversation with the Africans. They are not apparently from the Machukulumbu tribe who attacked Holub's expedition in 1886 and prevented him from reaching the East African Coast.

Adolf Born about A MELANCHOLIC DREAM BY A NORWEGIAN FJORD

Adolf Born's admiration goes not only to explorers, but to exploring itself....
