I have recently become aware of the 'Orphan Image Bill' which is being rushed into U.S. congress. My understanding is that if this bill is passed, it is the worst kind of news for small independant artists everywhere. It seems to suggest that ANY IMAGE /ARTWORK that hasn't been registered, can be obtained and used (ie. STOLEN )without permission or payment to the artist /creator of the artwork. It also appears that the bill is being strongly supported by certain people and companies who have the financial backing (ie. BRIBE MONEY) to guarantee the bills' success. Now I may not understand this situation completely, but to me it surely sounds like the rich are going to get ALOT richer, and the independent, creative minds out there are going to get completely RIPPED OFF, and likely forced out of business.

To those who wish this bill to become law, I have only this to say ...

YOU ARE A MONEY GRABBING BASTARD. GREED IS YOUR DISEASE. STOP CHOKING THE HELL OUT OF PEOPLE.

For more info on this, check out [link]

Both of these fellows have artwork that is among the finest in the illustration field, with a comical edge that gets me laughing every time. Not to forget Bobby Chiu and Kei Acedera at Imaginism Studios ... who continue to produce some of the most beautiful and imaginative artwork on the planet !
Recently I've come across a client who has been great, and a few who ... to be honest, have been lacking in tact, understanding, and respect. I thought I might take this opportunity to list a few helpful tips for both the artist and the client to better proceed with the business of commissioning artwork. I've spent over twenty years as a professional independent artist, and here are a few of the things which I have learned.
FOR THE ARTIST:
1. TIME IS MONEY. You must know what you are worth if you want to survive.
2. ACCEPT CRITICISM ... if you respect the person who is giving it. Any critic worth listening to can provide sound reasons for their criticisms.
3. Project confidence and knowledge ... this will only be believable if you actually are confident and knowledgeable. But don't overdo it !
4. DON'T BE EGOTISTICAL ... no matter how good you are, there will ALWAYS be someone better.
5. Don't be too hard on yourself ... you are better than alot of others.
6. Contracts ... Read the fine print, and NEGOTIATE. Most of the contracts offered are designed so the client benefits, not the artist. Know your rights.

FOR THE CLIENT:
1. PAY THE ARTIST PROMPTLY AND FAIRLY when you have received work . If you don't, artists tend to spread the word about what a cheapskate you are ... plus there's always the chance you'll end up in a court battle. Both are more costly than the artwork.
2. DON'T MISLEAD OR MAKE UNREASONABLE DEMANDS. Everyone can recognize bullying and manipulation. Everyone hates you for it.
3.EMAIL RESPONSIBLY. Right now I have a client who is sending me way too many unneccessary emails. I won't work for them again after this.
4. DON'T BE EGOTISTICAL.Right now the same client seems to think they are my most important client ... actually they are the least important.
5. RESPECT THE ARTISTS' OPINION !!! There is usually a damn good reason why they've done it that way! Ask them and they'll tell you.
6. BE FLEXIBLE AND FAIR with your decisions. This often results with a better piece of artwork for you, and a better relationship with your artist.
7. PROVIDE AS MUCH INFORMATION AS YOU CAN regarding the artwork. A little research and a few examples will really help you get exactly what you want.
8. TRUST THE ARTIST TO DO THEIR JOB. I have seen WAY to many clients become too involved with the tiny details of the artwork. It is extremely annoying to the artist, particularly if the client doesn't know what they are talking about.

There are many more things to mention here I'm sure, but this will do for now. Hope it helps !

Mark Rehkopf
p.s. - Don't forget to drop by my booth in the Artist Alley at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo ( in April ) and the Toronto FanExpo ( in August ) Cheers!

Already at the end of January! I'm still terribly unorganized. I'm hoping to do more comic convention appearances this year ... FanExpo Toronto is definite, as well as Calgary Expo, Toronto Comicon is a maybe at this point. It all depends on finances as usual... which brings me to the next point ... commissioned artwork ! Do send an email if you've got a hankering for an original drawing or painting ... some fascinating subjects for commissioned artwork would be ... dinosaurs or dinosaurs with sexy girls, or ROBOT dinosaurs with sexy girls fighting western cowboy zombies. Feel free to consider hot rod space ships ( with sexy space girls ) blasting SEXY ROBOT ZOMBIE DINOSAURS with cool STEAMPUNK rayguns. Ummm sounds delightful. I WON'T be bothered drawing flowers or children or kittens ... don't DARE suggest those.
I'm usually occupied with commissions when I do a convention ... so you have to find me EARLY to make sure you get a sketch. Look for the ADVENTURE VISUALS booth and banner, usually in the Artist Alley... or perhaps just in an alley... in a cardboard box behind the liquor store. Remember, you NEED at least ONE of my original drawings of SEXY ROBOT DINOSAURS with COOL STEAMPUNK RAYGUNS being ridden by ULTRA SEXY GIRLS with ZOMBIE SPACESHIPS in the background ... or you won't be cool. Cheers, have a great 08.

p.s. - WOW! 5,555 page views ! thanks to all of you ! New art coming soon ...

Always around this time of year, I miss John Lennon. The guy was a true artist ... he took his popular image and used it to create a positive feeling in people around the world. True, many cowards and idiots tried to get in his way, but it never stopped him from expressing himself. I really wish there were artists of his caliber around today... if there are, I haven't come across them. I feel sorry for kids today, being force-fed all that crap in the music and entertainment industry. In September 1980, I was fifteen when my friend Shannon lent me her Beatle records ... that changed my life. A few months later Lennon was shot and killed by a self-absorbed a$$hole. I'm sure if John Lennon were alive today he'd still be trying to promote peace, and maybe encourage people to give up this greedy, money-oriented, declining society for something more positive.

Instead of singing some old christmas carols, we should be singing 'Imagine' and 'Give Peace a Chance'. I think it'd be a start, anyway.

Thanks to everybody who has been faving my work ... it really helps! I've noticed alot of Dino - geeks ( I mean that in a positive way ) have been visiting my gallery lately and that's cool ...I like it ... just remember I'm a fantasy/sci-fi painter and just because there's a dinosaur in the image, doesn't necessarily mean the image is occurring in the Jurassic or Cretaceous. There is something to always keep in mind when painting extinct animals ... and that is SCIENCE DOESN'T HAVE ALL THE EXACT ANSWERS. Paleontologists have barely scratched the surface when they assemble their fossil finds. I've personally worked with several paleontologists and BELIEVE ME, they alter things to suit themselves. We used to think there was no grass in the Cretaceous period, so artists didn't paint it in. Now there is new evidence saying there WAS grass. NO one can say when birds evolved for sure ... we can only say we've found them in the fossil record at a certain time. The fossil record is our only clue to the past, and it's like a puzzle ... which is missing BILLIONS of pieces. As far as my dinosaur artwork goes, I always try to make a visually impressive piece, and not get too locked into science. Well, that's how I feel about that ... I'll get off my soap box now. Also ... my Albertosaur and Lambeosaur sculptures from the San Diego Museum of Natural History can be seen on page 134 of 'SPECTRUM 14 The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art'. And also on my website, ADVENTUREVISUAL.COM.

thanks, cheers!

Man, I'm offline for a few days and I miss everything! Thanks to EVERYBODY who faved my Triceratops painting ... now a DD ! I'll try to reply to all 900+ of you , but it'll take awhile. It's a real boost in confidence cause life has been a pain in the butt lately (can't seem to find decent work or a place to live). Anyway, it's an honour and I'll be checking out all of you who faved me. For those of you who love dinosaurs, I'm planning a book on the subject right now, hopefully it will be out next summer, so please check back now and then. Gotta go ... THANKS AGAIN EVERYBODY !

Last night my new Mac completely crashed...all I get is a pixellated screen when I power up. So I'm REALLY pissed, and there will be no new artwork for awhile.

I've added a bunch more deviations today ... that'll be it for a while now. Most of the stuff in my gallery is 5 or more years old, and I'm keen to do new work, so I'm ACCEPTING COMMISSIONS if anyone's interested. Illustrations, drawings paintings, and MAYBE small sculpture. Just send me a message if you are interested.
Thanks,

Hello ... These are my first submissions to Deviant Art. I'm pretty old skool ... hell, I'm 43, so the computer thing is still a bit new to me. Been working in Photoshop for 4 yrs. and am a slow learner with it, but have a strong painting & illustration background (20+ years).

Hopefully soon I'll make prints available so check back now and then.
