I can't put my finger on it, though.

I've been working so much lately that I hardly ever seem to have time to draw. Work is great, because it gets me money. And money is great, because it pays off my debt and buys me things.

But I'm starting to feel a gaping hole where my art used to be. I've spent no more than 30 minutes -- combined -- in the past week drawing. And that's being generous.

I also need to stop smoking again, and start running. I know it's a rather nerdy reference, but on a Magic: The Gathering card there's a flavor text that says:

"What indulgence tears down, discipline builds back up."

I need to really start disciplining myself, in many things. I know that if I start forcing myself to draw some more, I'll eventually just get back into drawing regularly, all the time.

The same goes with exercise. I need to start working out again; once I get into habit, it just starts to happen and I rarely even think about it.

Eh well. For now though, I'm going to relax. Today is a day for relaxing.

(Deliver Me)
Book: Quantum
TV/Movie: Battlestar Galactica
Game: Monster Hunter 2: Freedom
__________

I made it through another ACen this year, and once again, I was woefully un-prepared. How did it go? Let's run through it.

Friday

I showed up a bit later on Friday than I had originally planned -- I had things to do during the day, so I wasn't planning on getting there until about 5pm anyways. Ended up being closer to 8 that we got there.

At that point we had heard that there was a 10 or 11 hour wait on badges, so we essentially said "fuck that." We decided to have fun in the hotel until Saturday, when we'd be able to get our badges on a much leaner time-frame.

(Also note: I've been going to conventions for about 8 years now -- anime cons, gaming cons, etc etc, and I've never once pre-regged; I think that next year I'm gonna do that.)

My friend Bob and I quickly became inebriated, and proceeded to somehow find a suite party in which Rock Band was being played. After several solid hours of drinking, I worked myself up to sing Still Alive, which I got 98% on. I'm awesome.

The rest of that evening was kind of hazy, but I ended up in my car. I slept for a bit, woke up, and it was Saturday.

Saturday

I woke up in a daze, and it took me about 20 minutes to figure how to get my car out of the fucking parking garage. I had some personal things I needed to take care of that I couldn't get out of on such short notice. I went and I took care of those, and then I came back.

My friend Bob -- who I was spending most of the convention with -- he disappeared the night before. I found out that he went home with a friend of his who only lived about 20 minutes away. Eventually the connection was restored, and we were on our way.

We stood in line, this time for only about 45 minutes. Maybe an hour. Regardless, it was much, much much better than 11 hours. Got my badge, times were happy.

I made a quick run through the Artist's Alley and ran into :iconjunbean: and bought some things from here. Got my friend Xero's comic, and times were happy.

More comes soon, but currently I'm busy ~

I've been neglecting DA for so long now. And I mean that in a very particular way -- I suppose it's safer to say that I've simply not posted anything in ages. Because I've certainly been keeping up on my subscriptions and such.

And that's to say nothing of the neglect that my journal has seen ...

That being said! We have things to cover. So let's move along.

--

New Years Eve

My New Years Eve was spent at my buddy Gendo's apartment -- we call him Gendo because he's like a sexy version of Ikari Gendo, from Evangelion. Also, his apartment is absolutely filled with Eva shit.

I got drunk and puked. Made some funny comments. But at least I was dressed amazingly.

New Years Resolutions

After waking up the next morning, it was time for me to enact my New Years Resolutions.

This is significant for a number of reasons. First off, the resolutions I've made signify some significant lifestyle changes. Secondly, it's important because I'm not necessarily one to make New Years Resolutions -- I'm invariably struck by the stereotype, the cliche of "resolutions you're not going to keep." And it's not to say that I won't keep them, but rather, that sentiment proves to be self-fulfilling -- I was fairly certain that I wouldn't succeed simply because of that popular belief on New Years Resolution.

So I said, "Fuck that." I'm going to make a New Years Resolution -- several, in fact -- and I'm going to fuckin' keep it, while everyone around me is saying, "Haha, break your resolution yet?"

I'm better than that.

So what are my resolutions? Here are a few:

- Quit smoking. Check

- Stay more organized (ie, keep my room and my space clean, keep track of important things, etc). Check

- Spend more time drawing. Half a check. I've yet to really implement an art-making schedule, but I have started drawing more.

- Start exercising again/more. Check.

10,000 (Days)

Apparently I'm only 15 page views (probably fewer, after I finish writing this) until I hit 10,000 page views.

If anyone happens to read this and take a screen cap of 10,000, I'll give you something fun.

New Art Comes Tonight.

That is all.

Time for my requisite post. I feel like I've been neglecting this place for a while now, though in reality I just haven't updated much -- I've been spending a lot more time checking out other people's stuff.
Also: I've realized that my gallery is exceedingly bland and, therefore, I need to do more perspective work.

It's updated every Monday and Thursday.

VNV Nation concert

Got to see VNV back in April, and my god -- best concert ever. Ronan does seem kind of like an asshole, but that's fine, too xD

Afterwards I got to talk to Mark Jackson, from the band, for about 5 or 10 minutes. Very, very cool guy. :]

New Art!

Some new, some old. I'm a bit swamped with stuff for Anathema Complex, but I'm going to make an attempt to get ahead with the comic pages so I can sit down for a week and crank out a few stand-alone art projects -- I just finished my Haibane drawing, and I want to finish my Marcus Fenix drawing.

Costumes for ACen 08

Me and my friends have decided that we're going to make COG armor (from Gears of War) for ACen next year.

... I know I bit off more than I can chew. xD

But if we can do it, it'll be supremely awesome.

Well, it was my first time at the Metro in Chicago.

I think I really like that place. Can't wait to go back for VNV Nation on April 25th.

Anyways. Down to it.

I went with my friends Sean and Amber. We were going to go down, catch The Cruxshadows and then hang around a bit for Nocturna afterwards.

Now, I've never been to Nocturna. Known people who go, but I've never gone, myself. And I've been meaning to go, to check it out, though I'd been told by several people that it wasn't really worth going all the way down to the city. Oh well. I was there for the concert, anyways.

We get there at about 10:15 -- the show had started at 8:30, with opening bands Ego Likeness and Ayria.

It turns out that the show had started late. We got there in the middle of Ayria's set, missing Ego Likeness entirely. I didn't really mind, because I'd only heard of Ayria in passing, probably on MySpace, and I'd not heard of Ego Likeness at all. Ayria was alright -- pretty girl, definitely. Halfway decent voice, but she seemed to almost get too into the whole act -- her stage performance seemed stilted and forced, I suppose.

The Cruxshadows came on, and my god I want to have sex with Rogue's hair.

It was really an incredible show. Rogue would get off stage and walk around in the crowd while singing -- he even got off stage, went around back to the bar, got a chair, and brought it into the middle of the floor to stand on while he sang. That made me giggle.

Afterwards, Nocturna started. I really wasn't a terrible fan. It wasn't bad, but... well, the reality of the matter is that I was bored.

Seriously, if you go to Nocturna you have a few options:

Go with friends to hang out with.

Know people there

Be social

Dance

Honestly, I went with 2 friends, but they both knew people there... and I wasn't being incredibly social, mostly because it was a new place with a subculture that I don't have a lot of experience with -- I was mostly there for the music. Nor did anyone really have an interest in talking with me -- that didn't bother me, except for the aforementioned fact that I was bored.

Rogue had been socializing down in the foyer of the Metro, talking to people, giving signatures and such. For a long time there was a big line to talk to him, but it eventually thinned out. Amber and I made our way down to talk with him, tell him how amazing the show was. I went to shake his hand but he just went ahead and gave me a hug. Friendly man.

Evangually Amber and I managed to drag Sean out of there around 2 am -- after something like 45 minutes of saying good bye and seeing someone else and giving the "Hey! How are you doing!" thing and then talking for 15 minutes..

God, I felt like a little kid trying to tell his parents that he's bored. -_-

All things told, however, I was happy with the night. The show was so absolutely fantastic that it made up for any of the homosexuality the ensued afterwards.

I'd go back to Nocturna only if I had more friends to socialize with who didn't know everyone there, and/or more money for alcohol.

So, I played Gears of War for the first time last night?

Just... wow.

I really can't think of any other way to really describe it. It's fucking amazing. If you haven't played it yet you need to stop, right now, and go play it. Immediately. I don't care what you're doing, or how you're going to get a hold of a 360... but it is imperative that you play this game.

Preferably with 2 360's. And two copies of Gears of War. And 4 people.

...

Unless you have 4 360's.

.... Holy shit.

I can't even begin to comprehend the awesome that is encompassed in that.

a) I've been really negligent on the updating of my DA. I'm going to try and get better at that.

2a) Kind of a subpoint, but not really, is that I've restarted anathemaComplex. More on that later. But the reason it's a subpoint is that I've been really, really lax on working on it. I'm going to get better.

b) I'm working on a coloring by the wonderful . You may see it within the next week. I think it looks pretty damn good.

c) Loco Roco is concentrated amazing.

d) Add me on MySpace if you want: [link] -- Be sure to send me a message letting me know that you're from DA, if you so desire to add me.

e) While not as sublime as Loco Roco, Killzone: Liberation is good stuffs.

I have no 'f'.

g) I'm going to be posting arts tomorrow. Look forward to them!
It addressed an issue that a lot of people have had with the category changes and such, and I really felt like voicing my own opinion on it.

Here goes.

----

At no point have I ever seen any of the DA staff call drawings done in an anime style anything less than art.

However, perhaps we should look at this from the point of view of someone outside of the anime/manga culture.

Let's say we have Joe Blow, who really enjoys fantasy drawings and paintings along the lines of Boris Valejo. He really can't stand anime style because, well, to him it seems juevenile and far too minimalistic.

Now, Joe goes to look for some fantasy art that he likes -- "traditional" fantasy art, stuff that isn't in an anime style. He searches through DeviantArt looking for some cool stuff, but because of the (overwhelmingly large) population of anime artists submitting their works into the general Fantasy section, Joe finds 1 fantasy piece not in an anime style for every 100 anime drawings -- mostly shittily drawn, by the way -- that are posted.

And vice versa -- Perhaps Joe is looking for a piece of anime art -- not submitting, looking -- and doesn't want to have to go through the dozens of different categories that anime drawings might be in. Instead of going to Digital Art -> Fantasy, and Digital Art -> SciFi, and Digital Art -> Comics, FanArt, People, etc etc, etc. He only has to go to the Anime/Manga section and click search -- then everything he wants is in one area.

Please -- don't think that everything that DA does is only to appease the artists submittal process.

First off, links to check out:

[link] - I've been caught up in the Deathnote craze, and the movie looks damn cool. Doesn't hurt that they play Dani California in the trailer.
[link] - VGCats never fails with the funny.
Then there's this:

I like how the lips came out, and to a lesser extent how the light and dark contrast to give it at least a little depth. It's my first attempt at a digital painting, so I suppose I wasn't expecting to make an amazing piece the first time. The eyes need the most work.
They were all done purely in Photoshop, usually with only the mouse. I don't think I used my tablet for any of them.

You'll notice that rather than making drawings (which, arguably, would be more interesting) I opted for a repetition motif, and the reversals are designated by the negative and positive numbers on the card. I'm looking for a concept rooted much more in numerology, and, I feel, going back to the original divinatory concepts for the cards.

Maybe I'm just talking about interpersonal relationships with the opposite sex. In which case it's even worse, although I'm not entirely sure how something could be less than zero. Maybe because I at least had friends in high school.

A lot of times I'll think back to high school and ask myself "How the hell did I make friends then, and can't seem to do the same thing, now?" And I really, honestly don't remember how I made friends in high school. I don't even remember if I was trying.

More or less.

There's been a lot happening, but I think that's mostly just because it's been so long since I've updated. Day to day, not a lot happens, really. Threw together a few drawings and posted them; I hope they look alright. I know one of them, the second tablet post, sucks a lot of ass, but oh well.

Speaking of tablets, yes I bought one. Still practicing with it. Steep learning curve, though I think I'm starting to get the hang of it (ie, discover some tricks that make it easier, straighter lines, etc).

I've been working on a comic that I want to give away at Otakon in August. It's actually going to be the prologue to a longer comic that I'm going to continue online, a comic called "Anathema." You can check my Live Journal here: [link] for a short plot summary (ps: my livejournal is a place to keep updated on me, if you're at all interested). Very short plot summary. Feel free to get a hold of me if you're curious. As of right now, I'm not positive that it'll be finished (I hope it will be, and I'm planning on it to be, but shit happens and I'm starting to run out of time), but if it DOES get finished and you're not going to make it to Otakon (as I'm sure a lot of you aren't) and would like a free copy of the comic, be sure to contact me, either through email or AIM.

I'm still going to school at the University of Iowa, though if I have my way I'll be leaving for a private school in the spring. I just feel that I'm being... smothered, maybe?... by such a huge school as Iowa. It's tough to find a niche for yourself among 30,000 undergraduate students. Or at least find out who you are.

Is at risk here. Very much so. I'm very worried about it.

Let me explain. It's been a while since I've updated this page; in fact, there's been nothing at all on the front page, and I'm well aware of this fact. And, well... it's because I'm lazy, but that's beside the point.

The point is that my soul is on the verge of being swallowed by an entity known as Uru: Ages Beyond Myst. To understand this phenomenon, or rather, this consumption of my soul, we must first travel into the past.

In 1993, '94... The exact year escapes me, but suffice it to say, my family was the proud owner of a shiny Macintosh LC. At 33(ish) Mhz, this beast flew. Alright, alright... It was on it's last legs. So, my parents took it upon themselves to rig it up with a CD-ROM drive, and get the newly released game, Myst.

Let me say that my life has never been the same. The game contained so much atmosphere that I could barely breath. Combining a storyteller's charm with one of the most in depth storylines I have every encountered, the wonderful, wonderful people over at Cyan instantly turned me into a slavering fanboy.

And so it was that I devoured Myst, and subsequently, Riven, and even the novel written by the creators, which was, indeed, a very interesting book; I should read it again. The third installment of the Myst series, however, Exile, I did not pick up; Riven was good, but it wasn't that good, and I feared the further deformation of my beloved fantasy world.

Uru is... Uru is everything one could ever, ever hope for in a Myst game. The graphics are... nothing I have seen so far, nothing released, nothing that's being slated for release (HL2, Doom3) seems to approach the sheer beauty of this graphics engine. And while the interaction with the environment can be seen as minimal, there are instances where you'll find your character brushing against something, say, leaning on the wall, and it falling over, or accidentilly kicking a stick, or a log, or any assortment of items across the room. The graphics in this game, which are produced completely 'on the fly,' are infintely better than any of the stills in the previous Myst games.

My biggest concern is with Uru Live, the massively multiplayer arm of the game. This concern I have is not with it being a poor game, but instead, with losing the atmosphere of the series, an atmosphere of solitude and reverant passage. Hopefully this will not be the case.

And to think I had to get my hands on this right before one of the hardest school semesters in my life...

My god. I was looking through some deviantArt galleries, and I began to realize something; more than 50% of the people who have accounts on this website have absolutely no talent and think that posting negatived or contrasted pictures of themselves constitutes as art.

Let me explaing. [link] is a good example. Now, she's a pretty girl, there's no doubt. But what pisses me off is that she's taking pictures of herself (or having pictures taken of herself) and posting them on her account, in the hopes that she might appear 'artistic.' Sorry hun, but the only thing you've done is run the image through a few Photoshop filters and let the program do all the work for you. It might work if there was some composition to the images, but alas, there's nothing special. It may come as a shock, but putting some 'deep' lyrics from a song you like as a caption for a picture of yourself that you used a filter from the 'Sketch' menu on does not count as art.

Poetry. Ho ho ho, poetry. 98% of the poetry writing by DeviantArt 'poets' is pure crap. It was difficult to find an example out of the horrible masses of utter meaningless shit on here, but i think this one is a nice example of how to make shitty poetry that has no sort of poetic value to it; there's no rhyming, no discernable pattern in the writing that warrants the title of 'poem.' News flash; just because it's 'depressing,' 'emotional' or perchance even 'dark' does not mean it's poetry.

I'll admit that no, I am not a poet. But I will state that currently I am working on a Creative Writing degree (along with one or two others) from a respectable university, and I believe that I can spot a halfway decent piece of literature. The afore mentioned writing is SHIT. And I don't mean to just pick on the author of that poem; go click on the 'browse' button and select 'poetry,' and then either 'dark' or 'emotional' (I find emotional to be exceedingly entertaining) and you'll find dozens of 'poems' that you can use as examples. I think maybe, once in a while, you'll get a poem [link] that someone spent some time and used some poetic talent on, but that's a rare occurance.

Fuck artistic license.

Aah. The semester; it's finally finished, in less than a week. I'll be anxious to see how I did.

In japanese... whew. Japanese. I don't even know what to say about the class. I can speak japanese conversationally, and understand a fair amount outside of class, in an everyday environment... Even during class, when going over basic exercises and what not. But when it comes down to it, I always fold up in the clutch; whether it's standing in front of the class, giving a speech, or as soon as the test is put down in front of me. -sigh- Hopefully I'll be able to take the class next semester, continue it. I get to go talk to my professor about it tommorow.

Registered for classes this morning - a week late. I guess it's no big deal, as the classes I got are classes i need/like, and they're at good times. Only issue I've got with the schedule is my Creative Writing class; I think the one I picked is different from the one that my advisor suggested. The one she pointed out to me was a non-major, gen ed course that would count for my humanities requirement. The one that I picked, as it was the only creative writing course I could take, with openings; I think this one is for Creative Writing majors. I've got not problem with it, because, while I don't have a major declared, I have Creative Writing on my list of possible majors. -shrug-

And finally, I'm wrestling with my future; what should I do? I really feel like the option of taking a year off, in the fall, is quite realistic, and might even be good for me. I guess it's a question of my courage; am I brave enough to do something like that? It's hard to say. It's always easy to go alone with what makes your parents happy, to go to college, get a degree, make a living. I really don't know. Maybe I could take a year off, get an apartment, work full time, and try to get my writing off the ground. If my writing goes no where, then I could always go back to school and get my degree. But what if I can't get back in? Am I gonna be stuck at retail for the rest of my life, struggling to publish something that I may or may not be entirely convinced is even good? That's the question I struggle with, and the fear that I really have.

What have I been up to? A lot of school work, a lot of studying. Which, for me, is definitely odd. Oh well. I've put Massively Multiplayer [link] on hiatus for a bit, though I think I may do a comic this weekend. Good things are being planned, in that regard.

Also, I've registered my own personal domain, a place where I can work on my own webdesign. Radioactive7 [link] is really a work in progress, right now; at least, as content goes. I hope that it'll be a nice forum, a nice info-site, as it were, for all things anime. I've got a nice collection of desktop wallpapers, as well, if anyone's interested.

And that's that.

Oh god, Thursday afternoon's gonna rock; it's not even the destination that I'm excited about. Well... i am, but it's moot compared to the road trip that's gonna ROCK. 90 mph, assloads of awesome music... No more Iowa. Sounds DAMN good to me.

Frou Frou... now DAMN. She is/They are fucking AMAZING. Her/their music ROCKS. I can't get enough of it. It's horrible. My obssession, that is, not the music. Whew. I've listened to the song "Let Go" about 30 times in a row.
