Wrote this rant after these articles posted on comicbookmovie.com:

[link]
[link]

The writer was trying to defend that DARNA isn't a WONDER WOMAN rip-off... Which I think is pretty stupid.

______________________
You know what? I'm gonna have to stop you right there. This is going too far.

I'm a FILIPINO ARTIST living here in the Philippines.

I was wondering what the hell the article promoting GMA's "new" Darna installment was doing in a site like this when I first saw it. You dug a hole for yourself right then and there when you released that news... Now you're stumbling to defend against the fact that DARNA IS a WONDER WOMAN rip-off.

I read your article that's suppose to defend Darna not being a Wonder Woman rip-off and gave it a chance. You know what I was expecting? That you were going to be giving out a proof that the Filipinos designed the costume and back story of Darna before Wonder Woman. You know what you did? You just gave a useless history of how Darna came to be... Worse - You actually admitted in this article that she IS in fact a rip-off.

I know a lot of Filipino artists out there are going to get offended by what I have to say, but I feel that I have to say it cause you're in denial about a lot of stuff concerning this matter. MARS RAVELO is probably a legend and has inspired a lot of the great Filipino comic artists that we have today like Carlo Pagulayan and Leinil Yu... Respects to him for giving out the inspiration. But you are claiming something that is obviously not. You just shot yourself in the ass my friend... The people reading your article aren't stupid and blind.

I'm writing this comment to counter your denial of an obvious fact and perhaps you might learn a thing or two from this. All the facts that I present to you are based offa WIKIPEDIA. You've already admitted that Darna is a visual rip-off of Wonder Woman... Let's go deeper shall we? Read on.

-Let's start with the dates... VARGA was created in 1947 and WONDER WOMAN on 1941. So Wonder Woman came FIRST.

-WONDER WOMAN was created during WORLD WAR 2. VARGA was created by MARS RAVELO because he thought that the Filipinos needed a superhero AFTER WORLD WAR 2.

-VARGA's original back story was she was an alien whose planet exploded and she came to earth. (SUPERMAN rip-off).

-VARGA became DARNA and her back story was changed into ... She is a warrior from outer space who manifested herself through a girl from earth. (WONDER WOMAN and THOR rip-off)

There weren't that many superheroes back during those days when Darna was conceived which leaves a lot of room for originality in both visuals and character back stories. Why the hell are the character designs and back story so close to foreign superheroes? It's one thing to be inspired by someone else's concepts and try to create your own thing based offa that inspiration, and another thing to directly copy someone else's work and actually be in denial about it when you get caught despite the fact that it's pretty damn obvious. That's called forgery. I don't care if MARS RAVELO or the filmmakers that you mentioned were the ones responsible for this but it's still what it is and you didn't do jack defending your precious DARNA and her creator.

I'm gonna add to this a few other examples of how we FILIPINOS tend to rip things off from the west coz you're asking for it....

- GAGAMBOY. "Gagamba" is the tagalog translation of the word "Spider" for all you foreigners out there. Yes, it IS a rip-off of SPIDERMAN.

- LASTIKMAN is the Pinoy counterpart of the DC hero."PLASTIC MAN". Lastikman was also created by MARS RAVELO. Google "lastikman, vic sotto" to see the Pinoy superhero film where the design of this character is another obvious proof of a rip-off, shades and everything.

- CAPTAIN BARBELL (Also created by Mars Ravelo). A college student that turns into a muscled superhero when he lifts a golden barbell. There's THOR.

- When THE LORD OF THE RINGS was released, we followed up with ENCANTADIA and the "FANTASERYE" genre exploded.

My point to all this (specially the last example) is the fact that we DO follow up on what the west is doing and are highly influenced by what they've started. That's not such a bad thing as Hollywood really is the leader in Movie Entertainment I think. (Although a bunch of other countries are catching up/have caught up already). It's another thing to rip-off and deny everything at the end. That's bad.

I believe we Filipinos are better than just following up on what others have already started. We can...

EDIT:
Alright I just gotta say this... I'm not one to keep reediting my journal entries like this unless it's really something worth saying... And this ORPHAN WORKS bill shit is worth it cause it concerns our rights as artists.

I have set the issue aside for the moment considering that they're carefully trying to fix the problems with the bill... But I'm definitely gonna keep my eye on the issue. Who knows... The bill might die like it did before, but there's a chance that they might push it forward.

>>>TO THOSE OF YOU WHO THINK THAT THIS IS A JOKE and telling the rest of us guys trying to find out what the deal is about this shit to shut the fuck up: PUT IT UP ALL OF YOURS AYT? You could watch a video webcast or read the transcripts of the witnesses here: [link]

Want more details of the the Orphan Works instead of relying on hearsay or opinionated journals? Read the actual transcript of Marybeth Peters (Register of Copyrights) who supports and defends the bill here: [link]

Points made in summary:
-The Orphan Works Problem
-The Proposed Solution
-Response of the Copyright community
-Prior legislative action
-Current Issues
-The role of best practices
-The role of technology
-Other issues

The response of Victor S. Perlman (General Counsel and Managing Director the American Society of Media Photographers) concerning the Orphan Works could be found here: [link] He highlights the problems of the Orphan Works bill but at the same time understands the need for Orphan works legislation. The organization that he is part of (ASMP) is representing the interests of freelance photographers as well as several major organizations representing freelance commercial artists and illustrators.

Points made in summary:
-Fair and Workable solution
-Most published images are likely to be "orphans"
-Incorrect assumption
-Image recognition search technology
-Alternative dispute resolution needed
-ASMP's proposed solution

Good to know that at least the artist community is covered in this matter (thanks, ASMP, for raising the concerns and representing artists regarding this important matter). Seeing both sides of this issue, I now see the need for a fair and just Orphan Works legislation. There are iffy parts within Meredith's transcript which were pointed out by Victor of ASMP...but hopefully in the end, it will be rectified and everything will end with a fair resolution on both parties.

____________________

I hate politics....
I think it's the "in" thing right now I've always wanted to start a blog. But not just an artblog, something a little more personal...

Here it is: [link]

Don't have time to focus on a finished piece right now so I'll be trying to come up with random sketches everyday instead. I don't really wanna dump all my sketches here in DA so the blog's a necessity. Work's really killing my art. I'm not getting to do what I want most of the time... It's always client wants this, client wants that. It's all good but it really bogs me down sometimes.

Add me up if you're a "Multiplier"?... Or whatever. I love blogging. It's a place where you can share stuff, and the best part is you can speak your mind and there's an audience right there listening you. So till I can set up my own website, Multiply is the way to go for me.

~Piece out

Btw, I used to love playing the keyboard... But I'm no pro or anything, I just play by ear and just liked fooling around with some melodies I like from games and movies... I'm trying to practice again and I'm uploading some videos of me playing the keyboard I suck, so don't laugh too loud if you're gonna check it out.

Gotsabunch of images in my HD that I wanna finish but can't. Barely got enough free time coz of the graphic novel. I try skething at night after work so that I can focus my art somewhere else. Having someone tell you constantly what to do with the art you're working on just gets tiring once in a while. And I try to relax offa my own art. But after work, I 'm just too tired to sit in front of the computer that I end up lying in front of the TV till I fall asleep.

I don't have enough free time. I guess that's what my 360's trying to shove up my ass since it recently got the Red Rings of Death. I was playing Hitman when it happened. I was too tired to scream, but man... Was I crying like a lil bitch inside. I haven't even played Bioshock yet coz I dont have time to go out to buy the damn thing. It's almost time to Finish the Fight. I'll need to see this shop that can fix the Red Rings of Death that my friend's been telling me about. They'd better be able to fix it or I'm gonna unleash all this stress I'm feeling out on their asses. Tell your 360 how much it means to you... Before it's too late. Shit happens.

But It's all good. I'm happy with how the graphic novel's coming along. Still long way to go, but we're getting there. No sneak peeks sorry.

*BTW for the chick who got my 10thK hit... Your kiriban's coming. It's the one highlighted in the middletop of the screenshot I took above. I like how it came out so I hope you'll like it too. IT'S THE LAST OF THE KIRIBANS I'LL BE DOING GUYS. Eat me.

The hype exceeded the movie.

Why?

~Camera was too jiggly. The Transformers were already hard to make out who was fighting who while they were beating the crap out of each other... Why the hell did the shots need to be the same?
~Bumble Bee was my favorite Transformer of all time and frankly, he turned out a wuss in this movie. His paint job in the movie was yellow... Too bad his attitude turned out the same.
~The war on that All-Spark thing wasn't emphasized enough for me to feel that they've been fighting over that thing forever and it has messed up their planet or their race.
~John Turturro was corny.
~The cheezy drama in the movie was... Well... Cheezy.
~What was the point of Sam going up the fucking building and treading over the ledge to protect the All-Spark when he was running away from one of the mightiest, gigantic, unstoppable, most badass, flying Decepticon in the universe?

EAT ME.

... But read this first:

~The robot designs were great and fit the concept of the Transfomers perfectly and their transfomations and stuff was really something to watch out for in the movie.
~Megan Fox was hot. (but was still a try-hard hero in the last part of the movie.)
~Shia LeBeouf was great.
~The movie was really funny at the beginning.
~Peter Cullen is old... But still sounded great.

All in all, it was an entertaining movie.

Again... EAT ME.

...with me?

Still working on the graphic novel. It's alright so far. We're still trying to push and kind of experimenting with how much quality we can put into it. Some of the pages are done already, but we're trying to improve it right to that point where I can't paint any better, and they can't think of anything else to add to the pages in terms of creative ideas, mood, details and stuff like that. The clients really want it to be perfect... As perfect as my art skills and their creative minds can make it. I'm not complaining... It's definitely moving my art forward. They're challenging me... I'm challenging myself.... Nowhere else to go and nothing else to do but get better. I think I'm getting better... Atleast I hope I am

Anyway, not meaning to boast or anything, but at the beginning of the graphic novel... I was really blowing the clients' brains out with my art. They were always like "wow" and stuff But I felt like I didn't deserve the kind of praise they were giving me so I showed them the works of Mr. Aleksi Briclot. :[link] I dont really know why I did... I guess I was kinda taunting them to push me farther. I told them that Aleksi was my Idol. They never heard of him before... They're really not that big when it comes to knowing the truly great artists in the industry... And that's why I'm just plain lucky that they picked me And they liked his work so much that they now want the kind of stuff he's pulling off in their book, and they want it thru my artworks... I mean, my style, my colors, but with Aleksi's quality of work... Aleksi's professionalism. Well, the taunt worked... But now I'm gonna have to deliver... And that's the hard part I can't be Aleksi Briclot... I want to be... But only in my dreams One thing I promised them is that I'll still be me but I'll do my best to be better at what I'm doing with each step we take thru the graphic novel. That was good enough for them I guess coz I'm still working

Anyway, can't show u any previews of the graphic novel. The client's strict when it comes to stuff like that. Might have to wait till it's done. Sorry

Aleksi is like my God when it comes to art right now. None of his best works are on his website yet [link] so if you think the stuff in there's hot, wait till you see the new stuff... Not sure when he'll be posting them. But he's coming out with a graphic novel called Spawn: Architects of Fear. Been waiting for that thing to come out and I'm expecting it this September. Watch out for it... It's gonna unleash hell into your friggin brain like no other eye candy can.

As far as my 3D-ing.... I use a bit of 3D in the graphic novel we're doing. And that's about as much practice as I'm getting with that really. Good enough I guess.

I've got the weekends off... Will try to post my own stuff once in a while.

And btw, PRINCE OF PERSIA: SANDS OF TIME is in preproduction right now with Michael Bay sitting in the director's chair... Shit. There really is a God....

Zbrush 3 announcement video: [link]

Just need to get this out...
Anybody else here feeling a bit insignificant with what they can do with a 2D brush?... I'm feeling really small after seeing the announcement video of Pixologic for Zbrush 3 and browsing thru zbrushcentral.com. The artworks that I've seen in that site really overwhelms me... I feel like, with how easy it is to actually sculpt something and detail it out that easily in a program like Z brush, do we even actually need to create quality art in 2D anymore?

I mean, dont get me wrong, 2D stuff has always been around, and it has it's own look and feel to it... But what if it just reaches a point wherein 2D will only be used for just concept art? And the better looking, hi quality 3D renders will be the one to take up the pedestal of promo art?

3D's creeping into everything... Movies, games, illustrations... Heck, we can even listen to 3D surround sound nowadays... I dont know, I'm just feeling a bit left out. It's all happening too fast... Just like what happened with Spiderman 3's stupid plot Hehe... I really hate that movie.

Just thinking out loud...

Will probably need to save for Zbrush 3 if I wanna get in on this... That's the shitty part.

Where the hell did the guy who directed the 1st and 2nd movie go? Where the hell is the great Sam Raimi?!

I have too many bad things to say about Spiderman 3 but I'll just go at it in general... There were too many things happening all at once in the movie, too fast... And the characters that was built up on Spiderman 1 and 2 aren't there anymore... They're just not there, everyone was out of character (yes, I meant to repeat that same point coz it was really that bad) I got goosebumps coz of how cheezy a lot of the scenes were. Even the ghaddamn extras acted worse than the extras in the previous movies.

Don't get me started on the details. There are just too many things wrong in this film.

The aerial fights were great, Dunst looks a bit prettier, and I loved Bruce Campbell as I did in the first 2 movies... That's about all the good things I can say about Spiderman 3.

Compared to Spidey 1, even more so to Spidey 2, this movie sucks. Big time.

Just got my copy of this awesome book.

One of the features of the book is a full-on tutorial on how the characters and creatures of Gears of Freakin' War was created. Needless to say I'm pretty pumped to get back with my 3D tutorials... Yes, the ones that I've forgotten about... Everything I've ever read about and every video I've watched that taught me the basics about anything relating to Maya and Zbrush, all down the drain coz of a lack of Vitamin B-12 in my brain... Or in my body... Wherever, whatever...

Well, ok not all of it's gone and I've got the weekend off to make up for the stuff I forgot so I've pretty much got time to fool around with the stuff. But not tomorrow...

Tomorrow I go to watch Spiderman 3! Go on, post some damn spoilers if you want to, I shall have watched the movie when I get back to this post tomorrow Or make that later since it's around 5 am here already.

Watching a couple of the video tutorials now... Can't help it, I'm really pumped.

You can purchase the book here: [link]
Do check out the other books they're selling. You'll piss your pants if you actually get a copy of one of these books... And you'll probably go crazy if you actually get into one of 'em which is what I'm working on right now.

I sent 5 images to Ballistic Publishing a couple months ago to see if they could make it to Exposé 5... The 2 images that I thought had the biggest chance of making it are and .

I received an email a couple of weeks back and to my surprise and delight this guy made it in the shortlist: Well, not in this form... I edited the logotype of IFCA as well as the deviant art flag outta there coz a friend advised me that site promotion might not work well with the editors of the book... I also, of course, cropped down the canvas to get rid of the extra space there. Anyway, getting shortlisted doesn't mean the image will make it in the book of course... It only means that the image has moved on to the final round of judging and has a possibility of making it in the book...

Well, I chatted with one of my friends who sent in a couple of his images... And he told me that he already got confirmation a couple of weeks back that one of his art will make it in the book... And that's pretty much confirmation for me that my image probably didn't make the final round of judging since I ain't getting no email from them for quite a while now... And well... Dammit.

It would've rocked if the little guy made it in the book considering that he'll be carrying the flag of the Philippines along with him... That would'vet put a big ass smile on my face

Well, there's always next time.... But still... Dammit... dammit... dammit.

Just finished it. Damn game freaked the hell out of me.

Got a break from the job I'm doing now and had time to focus on one of my games. And man, did I immerse myself good in Condemned. Closed the light, and turned the volume up... And now it's 7am and I'm still shaking the crap that got scared out of me... Thought I'd type down on the journal to relax before I sleep.

Now that was one great game. I'm a big fan of the Silent Hill series, and Condemned pretty much gets the freak factor up there as well. I really enjoyed it.
Haven't been in the mood to paint my own stuff lately... Now my blood's boiling to do a Condemned: Criminal Origins fan art... Perhaps I might work on a Gears of War and GW:Advanced Warfighter fan art too.
Well... Atleast I'm in the mood to paint again... Wonder if it'll last...

Condemned: Criminal origins is also available for the PC. I highly recommend it.

Happy hacking away with whatever weapon you can find.

Anyone here care to share their thoughts on Mudbox and ZBrush?

I'm pretty sure Mudbox's features and interface is a lot better than ZBrush... I've used ZBrush 2 and have seen Mudbox in action thru their online demos.

I'm just tied between the two coz' I think the gaming companies here in the Philippines have only started using ZBrush lately... So if I'm gonna be adding 3D stuff to my folio, it might be good to start getting used to ZBrush if I wanna get into a gaming company. But Mudbox looks more fun to fool around with...

I've only started getting the idea of what a normal map is... And I heard there's this other thing called "Parallax mapping". It looks like another type of bump mapping that gives more realistic details than normal maps. I think they used this feature in Oblivion and perhaps even Gears of War. Anybody know anything else about this Parallax thing? How and what do you use to generate the thing?

Keeping up with this 3D thing's really turning me more into a geek than I already am.

Hello there.

Just wanted to ask you guys for help... I'm still working on that graphic novel thing... And I really have no idea on how to create a good layout for the panels. I've never done sequential art before in my life. Now I know there's a heck of a lot of great comic book artists out there who might be able to give me a couple of tips... Anything... The basics... The advanced... The do's, the dont's....Just throw it at me

I've seen a couple of comic/graphic novel greats like the Alex Ross stuff, Alan Moore, Frank Miller (300 yahoo! ) and that Dark Tower thing... I've been trying to study them, but can't figure out the basics since they're all going at it differently...

Anyway my gallery's been dead for a while now... I'll try to revive it soon, promise

In the meantime, any help to the comic book artist newbie (that's me), will be highly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Yep. I'm still breathing folks... Barely. Still busy with a couple of stuff. Still working on the graphic novel... And I've got this application I'm trying to push thru to get into a local gaming company. I can't help it... I love games. I need to be a part of it. It doesn't matter if I get hired as a janitor to clean out the trash for the developers... As long as I'm in there. I'm sure they'll discover what I can do with a tablet so I'll probably get promoted as an artist in the end anyways

Speaking of gaming... I had the chance to buy me an Xbox360 a couple of weeks back. Finished Gears of Freakin' War. Wow. It's no halo but still... Awesome chainsaw moves, awesome gameplay, gorgeous graphics. I've recently started getting addicted to Rainbow 6 Vegas.. But the damn disc got damaged in some parts and can't be properly read by the system anymore... Which is somewhat good considering it's been hindering me to get enough rest right after working.

On my gallery, yeah, sorry I haven't been posting anything. I'm just gonna get settled with all this stuff I'm trying to pull off, and then I'll post some art. I really want to revamp my whole gallery and finish everything that's in there. Most of the clients I've been talking to said that I done some amazing stuff in the past... Yes "past", as in the sketches I do right now aren't really that impressive to them compared to the more detailed stuff I did back then. Makes sense I guess considering all I've been doing lately are sketches. I've also got a couple of pending artworks sitting, waiting in my HD... I'm itching to finish them, but work comes first.

Anyway, do you guys friendster? Yeh, most of you are probably going, "no, multiply and myspace is better...". I'm too lazy to create some new accounts over at those sites. So friendster will do. Some of the deviants I talk to in here have added me to their list... It was pretty cool to see how they look like and get to know them more from their testimonials and stuff. It'd be cool to see more of yous. So add me up>>> bjballaran@hotmail.com... And I'll see you guys in a bit.

A guy from LA offered me to do the illustrations of his 90-100 page graphic novel.

This is probably the break that I've been waiting for... But I'm not sure yet if I really have it "in the bag" yet. He says he loves my work, but he wants to get a feel on how I'm gonna be interpreting his visions first.

We started on a couple of concept art and scene set-ups... So far so good on the previz stage. He's a bit of a nitpick when it comes to the details but I guess I can't blame him. He'll be investing his own money on the project and it's been his lifelong dream to see the mental images of his story come to life.

Next he wants to see how his visions will come out as finished pieces... I'm definitely gonna pour it all in.

Can't give you the details yet... I dont even know the title, only a couple of script pages have been given to me at this point. I'll try and update my journal on whatever happens.

I probably won't be posting much coz of this. Or atleast I hope I wont be posting much coz I shall have gotten the project after this....

My sister passed on this site that she got from her classmate.

It's a music site wherein you type down a song or artist that you like, and then the engine tries to look for artists or songs that fit in the same style and category. You'll end up liking the other songs too. It's a great way to discover new songs.

It plays the songs like a radio station and lines them up consecutively. If you dont like some of the songs that it plays, you just skip it by giving it the "I dont like it" rating and it moves on to other songs.

I've got limewire open as I listen to pandora and download the songs that I really like right away. Awesome.

Check out the site [link]

~btw, only prob with the site right now is, they've only got servers at the US for now, they dont have international servers yet... I think I just found the badside of doing speedpaints all the time... I tend to get bored as hell when I reach the 2-3 hour mark and can't seem to commit to creating finished paintings anymore. Pretty cool for my work to get laid down beside all those other awesome artworks also nominated for the award. Check out the current nominations here: [link]
"Rain" really brought a lotta hype for me. Will definitely capitalize on battle scenes like this. Thanks for all your comments and favs on the piece. It's highly appreciated .
I'm really getting torn between leveling up on my 3D skills and trying to come up with some more 2D pieces. There are still a couple of stuff on my gallery that I wanna improve on, and I've got a hundred concept pieces stuck in my head, just waiting to burst out. Gotta find the balance on getting my mood and inspiration if I wanna add 3D as part of my tools... I'm not really a multitasking kinda guy. Right now, I'm bored as hell trying to learn 3D... But I know I'll reap the rewards after I'm done with my tutorials... So it's all good.

Hi guys. I've really been thinking about doing some commission jobs. I kinda need the money right now... Will probably do it till I can find a good full-time job.

For the money transfer, I'll probably be using Xoom. I Need your tips on how I can put a price on my pieces.

Give me some thoughts on how the following may cost:

1. Hardcore illustration with crazy details; 15 to 20 hours work):

2: Character focused illustration; has fairly suggested background:

3. Speedpaint style; 2-5 hours of work; very suggestive strokes:

Give me some figures in $.

I'll be doing the regular stuff like:
~concept art (characters, environments, vehicles, interiors, architecture, industrial, creatures)
~illustrations
~fanarts

And one last, probably the most important question of all:
HOW DO I ACTUALLY GET SOME CLIENTS TO NOTICE MY WORKS?

Feedbacks would be highly appreciated guys. Tnx

Just making a note that I've started tinkering with Maya.

This is going to be my second attempt at trying to learn a 3D tool. My first attempt was with 3DSmax. And the boredom just really bogged me down that I had to give it up. Too many parameters and stuff like that to think about. The whole process just takes out the spontaneity you would look for when creating art. Everything's just so exact and pinpointed. But it's the new hot thing now... And my 2D art might benefit from learning a couple of things from this 3D. And who knows, perhaps I might like it and actually start making something out of it... Well, first I need to learn it. And that's the hard part.

I'm setting myself up to atleast get to the point where I can properly create both lo and hi poly models of characters and create textures for them too. Even if I get bored and I dont make it to rigging, animation, and everything else: Atleast I'll know how to model and map a character

Of course it'll probably be long before I can actually present something... So don't hold your breath till I do coz I'm not even sure yet if it's gonna push thru. Till then, it's 2D art for me.

Anybody got any tips about Maya for beginners like me, the comment box is open.
