It's on an irregular update schedule until after graduation day, December 14th, but I'm glad to be back. My entire body of work is up there, so if you like my comics, please consider buying a book! Lulu says if you order by December 19th, you can still get it delivered in time for Christmas. I realize they're a bit pricey, but that's one of the drawback of being a full-color graphic novelist: print-on-demand costs go through the roof. ^_^;

That's all for now.
Hello friends!

In the past several weeks, I've decided I want to develop my commission art services. The only problem with this is that outside my work on Garanos, I have precious few examples of the type of high-quality full color illustrations that I'd actually be selling.

With this in mind, in order to build a starting portfolio of the kind of commission work I have in mind, I realized that I'm going to have to do some pro-bono work first. This is an invitation for you to request a commission of any one illustration you'd like-- and it will be completely free. This will allow me to guage the speed I'll be able to work at, the time it'll take me to complete an average commission, and how to set my prices.

These are the rules:

1. Only ten people will get a free commission, and only one illustration may be requested per person.

2. This is a FREE commission, so no bugging me about the pace at which I'm working, or requesting more than two alterations in the preliminary sketch phase. I'm holding down two jobs and maintain a comic, so these are probably going to take me awhile. If you're in a hurry, then I am the wrong artist to commission.

3. I reserve the right to refuse your commission.

4. By commissioning me you acknowledge that I reserve the right to display, distribute, and reproduce the artwork as I see fit, with or without monetary gain, regardless of the content of the piece.

If you have read and understand, then please email me at alexheberling@gmail.com with the details of your commission. Examples of my work can be found at my website, comics, and Deviantart gallery:

My Website: [link]
My Comic: [link]
My Deviantart: [link] [You Are Here]

UPDATE: The slots are all filled.

So what the hell have I been up to, you ask? I've never been a big fan of the devious journal, since I've already got 5x10^5000 blog-like things in other places, not the least of which is my "official" blog on my website, but since I haven't put a new blurb in this space since I passed my BFA review, I thought it might be time for an update.

Also, seeing three paragraphs about dumb things like my hopes and dreams every time I come to DA to check on my watch list is totally uncool. I'm hardcore and shit. Or something.

So anyways.

I'm still doing Garanos. That goes without saying. I recently passed 250 pages, and I'm near the end of the tenth chapter. Only 8ish more to go!

I'm about to finish my degree at OSU. I've got one more quarter of coursework, which I will be doing in the fall. I graduate on December 14th. Holy shit, guys!

I got a job at the Cartoon Research Library. Scanning comics for OSU's trademark and licensing department with a gigantic, fancy-pants scanner. My job involves handling beautiful cartoon and illustration art from the turn of the century in a dark, cool, secluded corner of the stacks, at a computer with a widescreen monitor and amazing calibration. It's like my own little cave. It's the best job I've ever had.

Last winter quarter, I did a short comic called The Shepherd for a studio time class. It was the first comic I've ever gotten graded on!

During spring quarter, I did another comic called Corner on Main, which is an interactive and non-linear webcomic. I'll be adding more to this project over the summer, since I only got two of the different storylines finished in the time allotted to me.

This fall quarter, I'll be taking an independent study and making more comics for school. My goal is to complete a 24 Hour Comic. I'll be attempting the feat at least three times in the ten weeks, and I have lots of ideas for it.

So that's what the hell I've been up to. (I hope it was informative for those of you who have forgotten why you added me to your watch list.)

See you next year! OMGLOL

On April 29th, I had my interview to get into the Bachelor of Fine Arts program here at Ohio State. This was my second attempt, and it was luckily after a change in protocol for BFA applicants. In the previous system, it was much like the process for entry into the BA program: you drop your portfolio and associated paperwork off at a specific time and place, a committee looks it over, and then you find out whether or not you made it when you pick up your materials at a later time or date.

Under the new process, you personally meet with faculty from the area of concentration you're applying to, and present your work yourself. I met with Ken Rinaldo, a brilliant professor I'd had for two classes previously, and a grad student named Sonya who I'd never met before. I did my spiel, they had me stand outside a moment while they deliberated, and Ken called me back in to congratulate me.

I made it in, and I will now graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Technology.

It's now my job to fulfill my end of the bargain, and dedicate some intense focus on my comics, become a scholar of the medium, and contribute to it as an art form. I intend to do just that. Part II of The Dream(TM) is complete!

I've been having trouble classifying what my style is. It all starts from drawings, but when I finish a CG, the original lines aren't there anymore. So they're not drawings... but they're not paintings either, because I don't actually physically paint anything until the shading stage, and what I do at that stage doesn't even justify the term "digital painting". So they're not paintings, and they're not drawings. And I have a hard time figuring out which category to submit them into.
