Landlord is loosing his own house, so he informed me I have to gtfo by the end of the month so he'll have somewhere to live. It came to my attention that The Secret Prince of Tir-na-nOg, the book I illustrated (written by M.J. Bell) has been the recipient of the Mom's Choice award. Specifically, it won the gold in the category of Fantasy, Myths and Legends for the age group of 9 to 12.

Very exciting.

And a good reason to plug the book again. XD

I was just going to use it to post site news, con schedules, exclusive commission specials... Stuff like that. But uh. Would anybody be interested in it as also being a general art community? It actually has been for a couple weeks but other things have kept me rather busy. The whole experience sucked royal. And I know by default that moving sucks, but there were a ton of things that happened to make it extra special that I won't get too much into, but I think my very favorite thing was my brother crashing my car so we had one less vehicle to transport our crap in. Which isn't great when you're given quite a lot less that 30 days notice.

APE was a blast!! I could go on and on and oooon about it here, but I won't. If you're really that interested, check out the GlowingRaptor blog in a couple days. But suffice it to say that it couldn't have gone better.

From here on in it's back to the grind. Gotta finish up the Kingdom Hearts piece and then I'm back to making plushies, cause they sold crazy fast at APE, and I really wasn't expecting them to. So! I wanna be prepared for Fanime. It is a very different con, so who knows if the responce will be the same, but better to err on the side of caution, as they say.
Actually finished the Spirited Away thing, expect that in a couple days, as well as a pic of the plushies I sold.

There's also tons of work to be done on the website. I just recently finished the scramble for a proper mailing list (we had so many people that wanted to sign up at APE!! XD ) and the purchase section isn't up the snuff at all. I need to update it with our buttons, stickers, and post cards sized prints that we now have available for sale. Not to mention figuring out what we're going to do about full sized prints. I don't care for Deviantart's prints system at all, so we may just end up doing them on our own printers, which are, in all fairness, very high quality.

and I are now set to appear at A.P.E.! GlowingRaptor Studio is even a listed exhibitor, so that's rather exciting. ^_^
No fanart will be on sale there, but rather prints of our original work, postcards, ACEOs, a couple handmade plushies and (mon)·ster. So if you're in the area, stop on by. Anyone that buys (mon)·ster gets it signed and sketched in for free.

We will also be putting in an appearence at fanime. Hence the whole polling to see what anime and manga people are into. So! I'm handling Riku of Kingdom Hearts, and

and I collaberated on Chihiro and Kohaku of Spirited Away. He's currently working on something Naruto related (Orochimaru, anyone? ^_^) that he'll pass on to me when it's time to be colored. The only other thing I know we're doing for certain is L from Death Note.
Those will be posted eventually. Though in low-res, cause we're capitolist pigs that need to make money off our art.

's journal and thought it was awesome, so here's my effort to pass it on.

"Every day, there are more and more Craigs List posts seeking artists for everything from auto graphics to comic books to corporate logo designs. More people are finding themselves in need of some form of illustrative service.

But what theyre NOT doing, unfortunately, is realizing how rare someone with these particular talents can be.

To those who are seeking artists, let me ask you; How many people do you know, personally, with the talent and skill to perform the services you need? A dozen? Five? One? none?

More than likely, you dont know any. Otherwise, you wouldnt be posting on craigslist to find them.

And this is not really a surprise.

In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators. There are eleven times as many certified mechanics. There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field.

So, given that they are less rare, and therefore less in demand, would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street?

Would you offer a neurosurgeon the opportunity to add your name to his resume as payment for removing that pesky tumor? (Maybe you could offer him a few bucks for materials. What a deal!)

Would you be able to seriously even CONSIDER offering your web hosting service the chance to have people see their work, by viewing your website, as their payment for hosting you?

If you answered yes to ANY of the above, youre obviously insane. If you answered no, then kudos to you for living in the real world.

But then tell me why would you think it is okay to live out the same, delusional, ridiculous fantasy when seeking someone whose abilities are even less in supply than these folks?

Graphic artists, illustrators, painters, etc., are skilled tradesmen. As such, to consider them as, or deal with them as, anything less than professionals fully deserving of your respect is both insulting and a bad reflection on you as a sane, reasonable person. In short, it makes you look like a twit.

A few things you need to know;

1. It is not a great opportunity for an artist to have his work seen on your car/zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a great opportunity for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a student or beginner in an attempt to get work for free. Its ignorant and insulting. They may be students, but that does not mean they dont deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a student once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid.

3. The chance to have their name on something that is going to be seen by other people, whether its one or one million, is NOT a valid enticement. Neither is the right to add that work to their portfolio. They get to do those things ANYWAY, after being paid as they should. Its not compensation. Its their right, and its a given.

4. Stop thinking that youre giving them some great chance to work. Once they skip over your silly ad, as they should, the next ad is usually for someone who lives in the real world, and as such, will pay them. There are far more jobs needing these skills than there are people who possess these skills.

5. Students DO need experience. But they do NOT need to get it by giving their work away. In fact, this does not even offer them the experience they need. Anyone who will not/can not pay them is obviously the type of person or business they should be ashamed to have on their resume anyway. Do you think professional contractors list the experience they got while nailing down a loose step at their grandmothers house when they were seventeen?

If you your company or gig was worth listing as desired experience, it would be able to pay for the services it received. Alrighty, so I hinted a couple times at a side project I had going on, and seeing as how it's uploading to lulu.com right now in preperation for publishing, I'm thinking now is a good time to announce it.

It's called (mon)·ster (a big thanks to

for coming up with the name), and it's sort of an artbook/sketchbook sort of thing. Well, more sketchbook, really. But it's filled with a little over 100 creature concepts that I haven't published anywhere on the web. It'll also include a couple mini tutorials on the process I used for the creature concepts in the book.
I still have to read through some stuff at lulu, but it shouldn't end up being more than 15 bucks.

No real reason for posting other than for the sake of removing the last entry off my frontpage. I'm no longer that sick.

The comic is moving nicely, and the first issue is inked. Just need to color the last.. 6 pages. Which, because most of the detail is put in at the coloring stage, is a bit harder than it sounds. But for me the coloring stage is more fun than inking, so it balances out.
I know I said I was going to start posting a lot of concept work, but I changed my mind on that, and feel it would be more appropriate for a later date. And even then, I'm thinking I'm going to save a lot of it for a possible artbook.

Really not much else going on, as all the past couple weeks have consisted of is buckling down. As will the next couple weeks. As soon as things slow down I'll open up commissions again.

Ohoh, but I do have one other personal project that is rapidly coming to a close, so expect details on that fairly soon.

I try to put this in the desc, but I often space out. Usually what you'll see from me is digital, painted in either Photoshop 7 or Painter 9 on a 6 by 8 inch Intuos wacom tablet. When it comes to real media, I am fairly limited due to my obnoxiously sensitive skin. Really you'll only see acrylic washes, copic markers, and colored pencils from me. Unless you're looking at my older academic work that I did for school, that might be oils. I had to suffer through the allergic reaction for the sake of getting my BA. ^_^;

I know I get more repeating questions than this, but I'm blanking at the moment. Feel free to ask me anything, it may end up here if it seems to be something other people are wondering about.

One of the things I have in the works for a t-shirt, but I'm not sure about which version I wanna go with. The one with the seal tail makes it obvious as to what she is, but she will end up being colored like a harp seal, so I do think that the legged one would work as well.
Being deadlocked, I thought it might be wise to get some feedback. ^_^

On another note, there may be a few posts in a row in the future from me. The repetitive junk below is starting to run long, and I think I want to make special little journal entries for them and just link them in my regular journal entries.

So, I'm about to do something I've never done before, and pray I will never have to do again. As it stands I am very rapidly running out of time.

The object of the contest: Help me out with her damned hair. @___@ Everyone else's fox form is working but hers, including characters a lot less pivotal than she. This will not do. Take a look at these...

I despise how her hair translates to her fox form to no end, and while I drew blanks with other characters, I was able to knock out a ton of alternate things to work with. Not so with her. I honestly look at her and draw a blank.
So, if you think you have a good idea of how to handle her hair in her full fox form, I would love to see it.
For that reason creativity of design will matter more than overall skill level. Also, feel free to enter as many variations as you want. ^_^

HOWEVER. And it's important that everyone read and understand this, because this is the one reservation I have about doing something like this.... By submitting to this contest, you agree that if you win, this in no way, shape or form, gives you any rights to Cora as a character. AT ALL. If this bothers you, then kindly pass on this contest.

Don't get me wrong, I will happily credit your name as having helped me with her design a bit, but mentioning your name is as far as it goes.

It's made my who process so streamlined it's unbelievable. No fussing with layouts, panels and lettering for me, I get to focus entirely on the art. ^__^
Seriously, if you're looking to do a webcomic, go support them, it's an awesome program for not a lot of money.

Of course, currently it's only for mac. I dunno what's out there for you PC people. XD

The comic itself is going steadly. It's a finite series, and while I have a timeline, it's still too early for me to know exactly how many issues it'll be. I heard at one of the conferences at ComicCon that trying to organize everything into issues as you're writing is a bad habit to get into because it limits you. Being just a little OCD, I can see how that would become a problem. ^_^; But I dunno, any comic writers out there with any opinions? What about comic artists, what's your page rate? Like, how many do you turn out a week?

A lot of people knock out a page a day and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't envious. I'm nowhere near that quick. A page every 2 days if I'm having a good week or month. But then, I'm working in full color, I wonder if that makes a difference?

Alrighty, so. If fedex does thier job right, I shall have my new computer set up by the end of the day. And other than making art creation easier, I will now be able to play World of Warcraft.

But I have no idea what race I want to do with. x_x
The alliance is out all together, and here are my reasons why.

1. Dwarves and gnomes? um no.
2. Humans just seem pointless to me. Not just in WoW but in any MMORPG. If I'm going to go into an imaginary world, why do it half assed by being human?
3. everyone and thier MOTHER is a night elf. o_O

So. It's between tauren of either gender (though I'm leaning toward male), female troll (I saw art of other people's female trolls and found them cute), and female foresaken.

Druid if tauren, not sure what class with the others.

So, I am open to suggestions!

Also, to those who encouraged me to post early comic test stuff, thank you! That stuff will go up on my next round of uploads, so don't worry, I haven't forgotten. ^_^

But, same drill, whoever gets 33,333 will be entitled to a free digital sketch by me, photoshop or painter, you choose.

In other news, I apologize for the lack of art updates. My desktop is quite dead and I am currently on a little laptop. And while I have my wacom and all my art programs on it, it makes a godawful noise whenever I run photoshop for more than a couple hours, and painter seems to freak it out after about half an hour.

I thought I'd at least be able to post real media stuff, but the driver for my scanner... well, I just plain don't know what's going on with that, but the scanner randomly quits in the middle of scanning. Fun times. x_x

The good news is my new computer is on the way via fedex, and it shouldn't be more than a week before I can start working at full tilt again, which makes me full of glee, because I miss working on my comic book.

Speaking of which, I've been thinking about posting scapped panels and color tests, but I'm not so sure... would anyone be interested in that stuff?

If you are the 25,000th, send me a note and a description and preferably reference of what you would like me to draw for you! It will be sketched in either photoshop or painter, your choice.

Also note that the same prize will also be awarded to the 30k viewer, should I be so lucky as to get that many views.

From there I'll see how it goes, but I may be awarding art to every 5,000th viewer. Not sure yet though.
