I've decided to feature an artist for the first time, in preference to previous people. Instead, ladyorion's work is the most recent favorite. Targeting multiple output mediums

This article assumes you want to share your art, online and in print. The basic problems are: What is on screen doesn't look like what the printer will put out, and what an image looks like from computer to computer changes dramatically. How do you make your work look right (or close) in print, and from monitor to monitor?

The color professionals have embraced a standard called sRGB, and now-a-days most consumer level hardware and default color management in the operating system assumes an sRGB gamut. What that means is, if you set your monitor and OS to the assumed environment in sRGB, you've come as close as you can to having your display look like the assumed "average display", set up optimally. To do this, in a room with some natural light (not dim), and and your monitor set to 6500k color temp, adjust the monitor contrast (start from full and step down until just before pure white looks warm), adjust brightness (black should look black), and the OS gamma with a simple gamma tool like kgamma (KDE).

Unfortunately, most monitors out there are set to 9300k color temp, instead of 6500k. 6500k has a sunlight-like whitepoint and a deep range of near-blacks, while 9300k has a blue-ish tint and less range. To adjust for that, I've set my gamma per channel (seperate gamma for R, G, and B), and set the green channel slightly lower while all three are as high as they can be and still have a good color matching (in my case, on a pc with an nVidia card and iiyama monitor, it's 1.2 on R and B, and 1.15 in G). There's still a difference from the color temp, but now it's closer.

Why not leave your color temp at 9300k? Because of the other output, print. Print is a lot different from monitors ... it is subtractive color space instead of additive color space so it has less range and responds better in the secondary RGB colors than the primaries, and it is generally wider on the dark region. Luckily that second difference is easy to minimize, by setting your gamma way low (my setting is 0.75). This lets me see on screen what the image would look like in print, but how does one take an image made for one gamma (the screen settings), and adjust it to the other gamma?

There are two things I can think to do. Save your output images to PNG and use image Magick to convert the saved gamma setting (your screen gamma is to the file gamma as your print gamma is to X). Or, build a color curve (value channel) to compensate for the difference of the two gammas: this is as simple as :smirk: guessing the curve while viewing at screen gamma with preview off, then preview on and view at print gamma. The curve should be steapened near the shadows and return to normal near the highlights.

~ladyorion has a strong feel for illustration and a good use of design concepts. Not boxed in to one style or art, her oeuvre is both a lot like contemporary artists who blur the line between craft and art, and like a lot of under-the-brim artists who absorbed the expressionist direction in post-modern art, ultimately expressing subjective experience rather than worrying witlessly over technique. The result is a woman who's work is immediately stylish, accessable, yet can still be deeply emotive, passionate, and depthful. We proudly showcase her works.


blacklight floral is a pretty piece, looks kinda graffiti and also somewhat vector art. You've got some talent in vector art.

ladyorion: I've actually made two pieces in vector art - I've just started.

Well then, I guess I've seen them both. Do you think there is some sort of progression you've followed, from hand-done traditional mediums into a vector style? How do you approach doing a vector piece, relative to how you do a piece like "blacklight floral"?

ladyorion: Well, a good deal of the things I've done surrounding the time I drew "blacklight floral" were heavily influenced by the new-school style of tattoo art. That style has been a constant heavy influence which has, since then, "infiltrated" most of the works I've done. Features like thick outlines and bold colors, for instance, which work very nicely in vector art.

ladyorion: It's a general name given to a style of tattoo art which is very similar to graffitti, actually.

Other things you do are very rich in a different sense: Self-Portrait in SVG has a dirty, solid feel to it. Very stylistic. On the other extreme you have stuck inside, a simple but wonderful piece with a really satisfying use of texture. These pieces are more in line with expressionist directions in art. I'm curious about how style and messy expressive gesture interplay in your approach to art.

ladyorion: Both the pieces you've mentioned are very different from the others in more than one way. I usually work very schematically with a specific set of work methods and coloring/style techniques, and both those pieces were made with a different approach, not "let's make some art" but "let's see what I can create". "Stuck inside" was actually a product of playing around with the office scanner at 4am, seing what I could make of it, and the self portrait was experimental nature as well. Both were made with the help of mediums which I had not touched before.

With "stuck inside", the expressiveness of the piece comes across in the subject matter. The hatching and lines and blurring add to the artistry of the piece. Same with the self-portrait. The expression on your face comes across as deep and .... somehow very human. (great eyes) A whole lot of who you are comes across in these images in my opinion. "blacklight floral" looks more like it is about beauty, and what you think is Picturesque. Do you mean for "blacklight floral" to have the same expressive direction to it that "Self-Portrait in SVG" does?

ladyorion: No. Blacklight floral was a practice of what I felt like I could do (I was done while helping a friend work with shading with colored pencils) and the other two were purely about discovery. When I was drawing Balcklight floral, I knew what I wanted the resulting image to look like. The portraits grew as they were being created, and therefor has a different "weight".

~larryonlinux
(LoL) is an excellent fractal/computer generated abstract artist. His
works show a strong sensativity to color theory, a smooth and subtle
detailing, and goes against the grain in his genre with compositions
that do not delve into deeply contrasting textures, nor use of pattern
to impose a three-dimensional depth. The result is the freedom to
pursue stunningly complex pieces, that still manage to give a sublime,
rich and smooth feel. We proudly feature his works.



(Unfortunately we could not arrange to chat live for this interview,
so the following is a result of notes-based conversation.)




What struck me most about your material is your use of color. You
almost always have a saturated palette, yet your pieces never have
clashing colors side by side. Are you conscious of your color choices?
How do you apply these colors so smoothly to the fractals?



LoL: I love color. Be it just one, or a whole palette; so I try
to fine tune the colors in a peice untill I like it. I have been known
to spend hours rendering a peice, and then not being able to make the
color suit the image. In which case I wind up scrapping it and starting
over. I also try to let color convey feeling as much as possible.



Particularly in a piece like Extreme Colors
(another really good one is Heat Exchange), where your color choices
are broad, there is a beautiful smoothness and balance. Did you have
the major colors decided when you generated the fractal, or do you did
you hunt for the colors after the shape?



LoL: I use the XaoS fractal generator for Linux, and there isn't
any way to change the colors during rendering. All colors are altered,
changed or enhanced afterward.



The Passion of Purple shows a beautiful, winding fractal. How do you select your fractal regions? What applications do you use?



LoL: Using XaoS, I try areas near the end of a point. I laso
keep in mind that I may Mirror Split the image. So even if I only like
half the screen, I still keep it.



Some of your images utilize very subtle effects. A Glimps has a beautiful, liquid frame.
Shattered Infection is a very simple piece with interesting cracks. Which Way Now
has a very nice swirl effect. These all look like filter effects, but
I'm not familiar with all of them. What are some filters you make use
of? Any hints you could give us?



LoL: Shattered Infection was a one time experiment that haven't
been able to reproduce as nicely as I did in Shattered Infection. Which
Way Now was finished off with the Make Seemless filter in The GIMP. A
Glimps makes use of the Random Blends filter.

One other thing I use a lot of is, custom made gradients. I'll change
the overall color of a peice with a custom gradient (I have nearly 200
