Just a quick entry--I was tired of looking at that (almost) year old one from before, so this should bump it off.

Things are good. Not sure if I'm coming back to school next year, and if I am, not sure how full-time I'll be (probably not very?). Money continues to be tight, and I'm going on loans--I'm kind of not super eager to put myself any further in debt, and things at school haven't been as supah fun as I'd hoped this year. Tie in some friendship drama with me and this one person over this one thing, and... eh, I could do without? I kind of want to strike out on my own, focus on doing up sequential pages and trying to sell myself (the under 8k pageviews tells me it won't be easy though). Make very little money instead of spending very lots. How close am I to ready for the little leagues? I don't even know.

I haven't gotten around to asking some of my more comics/illustration specific teachers, ex-teachers and friends what they think about this course of action yet, so please chime in. The clock's a-tickin' and I'm not sure what I should do.

I am totally addicted to those CBR pro studio tours. Todd Nanuck's went up a while ago ([link]) and I finally took half an hour and went through it. I am pretty nerdy about that stuff. Pretty extremely nerdy.

I'm gearing up for a busy weekend, as I didn't intersperse *quite* enough homework through all the sketching I've been doing this week off. I have a problem with getting ahead of myself, where I get all anxious to see what I can draw illustration-wise with stuff I've learned at school (the first year here is visual arts literacy, no comic booky stuff) and I have to keep it at the front of my mind constantly that if I don't throw myself into the sometimes less fun school assignments I won't have as much new to apply to my personal work. It's a... delicate balance.

The good news is the life-goal of a career in some sort of illustration seems less and less absurd every day. Working at Marvel, DC and Darkhorse... well, we'll see? I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sort of ridiculously ambitious about it. I'm trying to stay realistic (really) but the notion that maybe possibly somehow possibly one of those companies would want me to work with them in 3 years keeps creeping in. Which is good on some level, it's good motivation for sure, but it's pretty damned unlikely given the size of the industry and the number of people always trying to break in. Most of my friends are more "Well, I'll be very happy to one day work in comics, any comics" about it, which is probably a better way to be. But in my private moments I'm usually making shopping lists of books I'd like to work on, writers I'd love to work with, and my own stuff I'd like to see produced (and even more outrageously, find an audience).

So that is that. Radio silence for the next few weeks probably while I get school back in order. Stay classy, San Diego!

That is, until I answered the phone and learned that I've been accepted to Max the Mutt Animation School [link] , a private college in Toronto. It's one of Canada's best animation schools, and the only school in Canada to offer a diploma in illustration for sequential art, which is what I'll be taking. I've thought about switching to the coming 4 year program illustration for concept art, but we'll see what money is like and what the courses are.

Another year (yikes), another series of brief updates. The big news is I've applied to Max the Mutt, a cartoon art school of considerable prestige within the industry, for a 3-year diploma in illustration for sequential art. Awesome? Yes. Awesome. I should know pretty scoon, actually. Dan, the admissions guy, called yesterday and said they have my stuff and they'll let me know ASAP. It's in Toronto, so it involves a move halfway across the country, but that means I can go to the zoo. Weird thing to be excited about, but I have good memories of the Toronto Zoo from when I was a tot, and when I was all eek about moving to such a big city, I calmed myself down with "zoo". I planned to live in TO for a while anyway, but this is pretty sudden and soon.

Keep your fingers crossed for me and my meager future!

Hello fellows. Just thought I'd share this email that turned up in my junkbox this morning. It's Very Official(tm) and assures me an un-named recently deceased relation is going to leave me an undisclosed amount of bajillions of dollars. It's vaguely amusing. Ignoring the fact that I am 22, have two living parents, a grandmother, about 20 blood-related aunts and uncles, and for some reason I'm the only one who can divvy up the estate and the bank has my amazingdavidman email address, I'm so estranged from my extended family it's laughable that any of their banks would know I exist. Anyway, here it is (from donaldpeters_12@msn.com):

Dear Friend

I know this email will come to you in an odd manner as
you have not received any prior communication from me
before now.

But be that as it may,my name is Mr.Donald Peters and
I was priviledged to be the account officer of my
deceased client who lost his life sometime ago.In the
process of review of the financial report by my bank,I
discorvered that you are related to him becuase of
your names, hence I contacted you so that I can give
you further briefing on my intention and how to
disburse the estate he left behind.

I will most acknowledge your prompt response as that
would enable us to start something immediately.

Sincerely,

Donald Peters.

I bet the something we start is me giving him my credit card number and bank account info so he can send me my inherritence. Do people actually fall for this shit? Is some imbecile getting swindled by this guy, freely giving him access to all their savings? Well, joke's on this guy. I don't have any savings. Nyahh!
