A-kon was really good this year… which I’m posting as if it’s news because even I didn’t realize that I made close to 3 times what I made last year until I got home and checked the numbers. Woot, estimated tax money and health care! Thanks for everyone that stopped by and said hello and stuff. The laminated signs and extra larger weird cat prints really seemed to help draw people into the booth to get clobbered by both me and Shawnna’s adorable buttons and art. My most popular piece of art for people to stare at and point friends to, was this image of the “Cat Puking Kittens” from the new Catalyst folio. Which is now available for order here: [link] I have to make a journal entry specifically for Catalyst in a little bit.

In other news my iMac’s hard drive exploded… freak death, it just stopped working and now it won’t boot. Thankfully I’m totally covered by Apple Care so, woot, free hard drive. The only bad part is they’re not sure they can save my important data from the dying drive. I have to cross my fingers and hope that I can backup most of the new My Muse comics, some of my prints/art, and hopefully my tax info for last year when I take it back in. Thankfully, I do most of my art work on my laptop. Which reminds me I really need to back up some data on that computer. Sigh. Well, at least I’m not paying for the repair.

-Diana

I'll also have huge giant prints of some of my weird cats (Like the pancats, flower cat, and cat puking kittens... I really need to post some art when i get back from the con) and a few new buttons. So I'm full of new cool things to buy. Come by and chat me up... er you know in the talking type way.

Ugh, sadly I ran out photo paper and can't print any more small prints. Con struggles. Where as the Micron's felt tips tend to fray as they wear.

I think I'll try to play music while I work instead of talking.
-Diana

Though Sterling says I seemed to have picked up the whole "talking while not looking people in the eye" thing that the Japanese do. O_o Weird. Shawnna spent some time looking through my giant stack of doujinshi that I picked up. I gave her an adorable doujinshi all about owning rats.

On Tuesday I made a trip down to San Antonio to see James. OMG, gas was 1.49!!! I left on Tuesday cause his birthday was on Wednesday and those were the two days he knew he had off from his job. I didn't get sick at all while I was in Japan and I made a joke right before we left that "Just you wait, when I get back to the US that's when I'll get horribly sick." I was right. So, I spent some of Wednesday sniffling and coughing. But I had a great time hanging out with James. I bought him a tiny cake for his birthday and we watched the "Kamekaze girls" movie. I also gave him a Superman and Batman doujinshi that I'd picked up at Comic Market.

I left at 4 in the morning of Thursday and then spent most of that day asleep, except for lunch with family.

I wish we had convenience stores like they had in Japan and I also miss the ubiquitous vending machines. I really wanted to get hot corn soup in a bottle from a vending machine while I was feeling sick over here. I also miss the onigiri, crust cut off sandwiches, and the sweet mochi that they'd sold at the Lawson next to our hotel in Ueno. =<

But I'm glad to be home.

There will be some real posts about Japan once I get more sleep and after I get some work for this week on the move. I can't believe how fast time has passed me by.

Comike or Comic Market 75

(Edit 1-9-09: So apparently the Japanese shorten "Comic Market" to "Comike" instead of "Comiketo"... you learn some thing new everyday.)

So, the only thing I had hoped to see and haven't seen in Japan is someone with a pompadour... but it could still happen. So far I've seen a guy pee against a wall, a bunch of homeless guys making their neat cardboard box shelters, Japanese christians doing a song and dance in a line (it reminded me of that Caramelldansen meme but with Jesus), Christmas boots (I don't think they have fireplaces to hang stockings, so the thing to do over here is fill a Santa boot full of tiny gifts), Christmas chicken... thank you KFC, and also maid cafe girls handing out fliers.

Today we went super early to the first day of Comic Market to try to get a bunch of stuff. We waited in a packed ten person wide line for about 3 hours. It was rather cold but pack as close as we were it didn't feel that cold... though you could feel the weather if someone near you sat down. I brought with me four hand warmers and felt pretty good. Comic Market is really odd. It's completely the most gigantic comic con I've ever been too and there are people everywhere and the doujinshi are super cheap but the quality over all is like any other comic con. It's like swimming through a huge pool of meh while looking things to find the few you like. Still, they were very cheap over here, I think the most I spent for any one was 600 or 700 yen. I spent 300 to 500 on most of them and one of them I bought for 100 yen. It's sort of crazy to think that I spent all this money and went all this way for 300 yen comics. LOL.

I ended up with a few extras here and there... not sure what to do with those yet. I ended up getting an awesome Hellboy and animated Teen Titans doujinshi. I don't even like animated Teen Titans.

We're missing the beginning of the second day to go eat at Iron Chef Sakai's restaurant but I think we're planning to stop at Comic Market for the end of the day. Marcy likes Iron Chef so we also went and ate at Michiba's restaurant earlier, we've been getting reservations for lunch where the food is way more reasonably priced.

We might be going early for Comic Market on day three and waiting in the line again. Man, I can totally see why they suggest that you make a list of places you want to go and mark them on the map... I tried wandering around and just looking as I walked but it all starts to blur together after awhile. The map is really the way to go.

I know they tell you not to bring the catalog with you... but most of the people in line with us had the catalog to look through. Or they cut just that one day out of the catalog, which seems like a great idea if you don't want to carry the whole giant phone book sized catalog.

I think there was something else I wanted to mention... Oh yeah, I also bought clothing over here. The winter wear is soo cute, though it was hard to find a Japanese size big enough for my hips. At least now I won't be soo cold, since I live in Texas I didn't really bring that much cold weather wear.

Posted to my LJ on the 18th of December.

The plane trip over to Japan is some incredible amount of time to be sitting next to two people who speak french that are going to Bangkok. They were very nice but I was hoping to sit next to Marcy on the way over. Instead we got split up and put on opposite sides of the plane. I am still able to sleep through anything and spent a lot of the time passed out.

So far we've only gotten lost once. The hotel I booked is tucked away and I forgot to print out a small map so we could navagate our way to it. So, we wondered around and asked various people on the street in a lost tourist type way. We eventually found it after some small adventure wandering down tiny streets.

The trains are neat and odd. I wish we had something like them in Texas. Mom's friend in Sapporo got us a Comic Market catalog, which is good for us since apparently they'll been selling out over here and are hard to find. Me and Marcy still need to pour over it and see what circles we want to go and get stuff from. I figure I'll end up getting lost no matter what and have to wander about confused. Still, I figure I'd give being organized a shot.

The day is just starting over here. More laters.

Wow, I am so unprepared for this. I've only recently started to make plans. Worse trip planner ever.

Mom used some crazy amount of airline miles to get her, me, and my friend Marcy tickets to Japan (Tokyo) in December. We're going to be out there some 3-weeks or so roughly from the 18th of December all the way until the 4th or 6th of January. We are so unprepared. LOL, even though I've received amazing help and tips from friends I'm only now starting to feel like this trip is going to actually happen and to start some sort of planing.

We're going be in Tokyo during Comic Market 75 so we're trying to figure out all the stuff we have to do to attend it. I believe it's too late to even try and sell there so I'm not too worried about that. Marcy wants to be there super early... I think I'll need to make sure to pack a warm coat if we're going to wait in line for a few hours.

Actually I think I'll need all kind of warm winter clothing as I don't have much of that anyway. I live in Texas after all.

It's also been about 8 years since I was actively taking Japanese in school... I'm going to be sooo rusty. So far, the things I remember how to say are "please repeat", "where is the toilet?", "how expensive?", Sailor Moon's attack spiel (sigh, once a dork, always a dork), and "My name is Diana Sprinkle."

Does anyone out there have suggestions and stuff for Japan? I'm sort of flying by the seat of my pants on this and I have no idea on the whole hotel, sightseeing, train pass, food places, comic shop stuff that I probably should. Any tips?

Anyone actually in Japan right now?

-Diana

Does anyone out there remember high school better then I do? Specifically in the Texas area, since we have some odd customs that the rest of the states don't. Like mums. Man, have those gotten out of control since I was high school... now they are like a huge breast plate or a dress. Not that they weren't already sort of silly when I was high school but wow... LOL check this out: [link]

So, could someone help me out, what the hell happens at those high school pep rallies? It's been like forever since high school and I can't remember. At my old high school they'd cut class early in the morning, usually it was home room, and force everyone into the gym's bleachers to watch some sort of thing with the football team, or the cheer leaders, or maybe it was the band? Some combo of that stuff. Something... I do remember spending most of my time trying to avoid them or study through them. Good job me.

LOL, anyway I always thought they were lame. =/ It didn't help that our football team sucked ass.

God, sometimes I hate my story ideas. I was perfectly happy forgetting high school and now I have to dig up info on it. Hmm, I wonder where the hip punk smoke their cigarettes now-a-days... I somehow doubt they let them smoke out in front of the school like they use to.

-Diana

Hands money over for hot dudes. Also Chai tea... thank you Startbucks. We bailed on Sunday night due to slow sales and people sitting down in the walkway and screaming next to us. WHY? WHY? WHHHHHYYYYY?

I don't remember anime cons being this tiring. San Diego wasn't this bad and it's a con of a gillion people crowded into a small small space. Oh and yes and I did get the red river of female shame... the tasty apple of cherry koolaid pants... the Aunt Floo... the some horrible sounding euphemism for blood shooting out of some personal part of myself, yada yada ya. =<

So, I got hot dudes drawn for me by and hopefully I did not infect her with my horrible snot churning cold... I'mohmygodsorryifso!!! And I um... sat behind Shawnna's booth a whole bunch selling buttons to people and tried to not stab people in the eyes when they sit down in front of the walkway next to us to watch flash videos and scream. Oh the screaming! And DANCING! AND SCREAMING, I HATE YOU GOD. Cough, yay?

Edit: I also meet some wonderful people who didn't scream in my ear or dance... I love you guys. Composes a song in your name.

Also I started posting to Y!Gallery [link] I predict mostly reposts and frustration. Did you know that they automatically delete people's comments from your inbox and also delete updates to your watchlist if they are older then 100 or 20 days respectively? Wow! WOW! I need to start spending some time making another new designs for my site right now so that when I go to update the thing it doesn't take forever and a day like it did this time. I'm still working on getting all the design elements on the wordpresses side working with the real version of the site.

There is a store but it's going to take me a little bit to get it up and running. Hopefully this weekend I'll get to work on that. YAY!

And the best for last, now you can leave comments on my posts! That people can see and things! Yay, so far I've approved over half of the 700 real comments I've accumulated over the 3 years I've had wordpress. But there are some that I'm not sure what I'm going to do with... mostly the one's where people ask for porn or suggest that I should draw it very loudly with descriptors... ew. Also I have a small set of comments asking to buy things that may not end up on the site as I contacted those peeps through email or forgot and just feel ashamed of myself... And a small set of comments where my friends and others left contact info in the comment. Don't worry I won't display your phone number. Right now the comments are still set to be moderated but that should be eased up on over time as I get use to having comments on the page.

So, I'm definitely going to A-kon this year. Which will be interesting. I plan to take many photos of people in strange outfits... I'm not even talking costumes I just like it when they dress up for the cons. Sometimes it's unintentionally hilarious. I take photos of lots of people in awkward fitting clothing, mostly pants cause the pants people are selling to chicks now-a-days are terrible to the feminine shape and make us mostly look weird and terrible. I need to draw some from all those photos I took at last year's A-kon, I really want to get down the horrible shape of the muffin-top because my brain refuses to let me draw it due to the fact that it doesn't think it looks right at all. So photos have to be taken cause the muffin-top can make even thin anorexic girls look lumpy and fat. It's not right. =/

I'll be in the Komik Market at A-kon on May 30th through June 1st. Steven, the guy that ran the Komik Market for the last few years. So, I'm not sure what name it'll be under. I figure I'll mostly be hanging out at the con and helping Shawnna sell buttons. Hopefully there'll be room behind the table... but I might roam the con a bit and see if I can find some of the people I want to see. It'd be nice to actually see people for once.

Other Conventions I'm going to be at this year:

A-kon in Dallas... May 30th - June 1st
Anthro-con in Pittsburgh... June 26-29
Comic Con in San Diego... July 24-27

That's all of them that I can think of.
-Diana

Sorry I wasn't at home in February to receive it so I could have included it in the contest proper. Now he is a massive cat and fluffy too. Use to bite like a bitch and made me realize that I don't like kittens. It's no wonder Max's full name is "Maximum Bitey." Feral kittens make Diana sad, so cute and soo bitey. Thankfully I took him on a plane 3 times to visit Mike's seven cats who beat him up and taught him cat things like "I hate you I will hiss" "let's play no I hate you... no not really" and "hey unlike those humans I don't spray the air can near you when you bite me lets run around like fools" and other fun things that made me think he was all bored on his own.

So, I got him a friend at the shelter. Her name is Cambrian but I tend to call her Cam Cam. She has much shorter hair then Max and makes tiny trill noises and runs around like crazy. They play a lot and bite each other and make remixing noises of growling and joy before running off. There is also licking mixed into the biting fun. She's much smaller then Max.

Max likes to sleep on his back with his tiny kitten paws in the air. Max is 10 months old and Cam is 7 months old. I think this amount of cats is pretty good for me. Though I do wish they'd sleep less in the day and more when I'm sleeping. Pets Max's tummy of fluff.
Dear contest winners I have sent some of your prizes out. I have also received all of your addresses and requests. I should be finishing the collection of your prizes and sending them your way by the end of next week. Hopefully. =]

I'm trying to update DA/LJ/website more... we'll see how well that goes. This time my goal is pretty colored images that destroy the retina and cause frustration or loss of blood. I'm probably just hitting the vaguely "hey that guy crotch is a bit too fabulous" area more then anything else. =/

The kitten that I found outside my back door has become a giant cat of doom. He's like 14 pounds. He may need a friend or he may not. I'm all watching him. When I went to visit Mike in California I took him with me on the plane and at Mike's place he got to bite the other cats and play. So, he stopped biting me but when I take him home I think he gets bored so he comes and says lets play, with his teeth. Mom actually said that she'd be fine with another cat so I'm all watching him... as further amusement while typing this my cat grabs my hand and bites it then he runs about making tiny purr-meow noises. Lets play he says. He'll need a friend I think.

I named him Maximum Bitey but I mostly call him Max. I have to keep telling mom not to call him Maxi Pad... I'm all no! Bad mom.

-Diana

My Comics: [link] - My website: [link] - My LJ: [link]

Edit: Whee, now that I'm not incredibly tired, some comments from me on the wining entries.

Yay, so the contest is over. Thanks so much for everyone who made art and wrote reviews. I feel this happy sense of love just like I use to back in the day when me and Mike were making Saiko and Lavender. When every now and then people would send us little letters letting us know that the weird crack baby comic we made was indeed making it's ways into people's hands. Once I started posting the comic to the internet it allowed a lot of the people who had stumbled on to our comic long ago to find us again and finish reading the comic or re-reading it. I'm glad that so many people have had that chance and I hope everyone has enjoyed all the art and more that were made for the contest. Thanks so much to everyone.

So without wibbling anymore here are the winners:

Art Contest Grande Prize winner:

I really like how cute and adorable this idea for a Saiko and Lavender face off was done. I also liked how they made the hair on the characters look, it's still the style I draw but much more three dimensional. The pastel colors give this picture a soft feel and the little faces Saiko makes are really funny. Saiko is so devious and sly. Hug hug hug.

3 Runner-up winners:
I find this image really amusing. I thought it was very neat that they made Lavender an actual cat and Saiko's expression here is perfect.
I like the action and anger of this image. This really captures the feel of Lavender taking her frustration out on someone. I just know that either the person she's attacking will be in trouble or her spell will go horribly wrong in some funny way.
I like that in this picture Saiko is catching the pop tart in her mouth. They definitely caught the personalities of the characters.

For the Review contest the grande prize winner is: Srednivashtar

I like that this review was done in the style of a wacky advertisement much like the one I wish I could have come up with back in the day.

And the runner-up is: [link]

I like that they took the time to translate the review into another language, that was pretty cool.

I will be contacting the winners to figure out where to send their prizes. Thanks so much to everyone who's been watching. =]

Again, I thank everyone who took the time to enter. Every entry made me happy when I received them. It was hard to pick the winners so I went with the ones I felt most captured the characters and the ones that made me smile the most.

-Diana

My Comics: <a href="http://www.webcomicsnation.c...

Contest closed! Whee, thanks everyone for entering. I really enjoyed looking at all the wonderful entries. Also if I missed your entry please let me know so I can add you to the list. Winners will be announced on Friday the 1st. =]

Yay, I live! The holidays almost killed me but I have survived! Every time it seemed like I needed to buy something, eat food, or check something, everything was closed.

So contest...

Saiko and Lavender the webcomic [link] is now complete and posted to the internet. YAY! So for this momentous occasion I will run a tiny contest with real prizes. Hopefully someone will enter so I don't have to cry at night and give myself the prizes.

Here's the info, there will be two different contests one for artists and one for all the other people that either aren't artist or who hate drawing for other people. There will be prizes for both.

For the art contest, go to the Saiko and Lavender comic... it starts here: [link] or look at the comics if you own them (it could happen ), draw a picture of whatever Saiko and Lavender character(s) you love, hate, enjoy torturing. Have them doing whatever you want... eating breakfast, destroying the world, attacking giant monsters, curling their handle bar mustaches, posing. The sky's the limit, well, within reason. If you make terrible porn I will of course be amused... um and I will have to disqualify you for the prizes since I can't display the winning entry. If you have an old piece of Saiko and Lavender art you did back at the dawn of time... cough, er... when the comic was first printed feel free to dust it off and send it in. You can enter as many times as you want but you can only win one prize.

Reference for Saiko and Lavender on DA:

Prizes for most amusing Saiko and Lavender picture:

--Signed copy of Saiko and Lavender graphic n...

Man, I burned my wrist over Thanksgiving... and now I look like I'm diseased. It sucks. This month feels like it's zooming by me super fast and I can't seem to catch up at all. I was ahead at the beginning of the month and now I'm really far behind. I keep staring at the page and thinking horrible things, then I go play with my kitty.

I'm so out of it I haven't even left my house to deposit my pay checks.

I updated Saiko and Lavender [link] up to where the whole thing ends, which it turns out is some time in January. I'm thinking I might run some sort of contest with prizes to send it out with a bang.

Last week I watched "The Hills Have Eyes 2" and I decided that I wasn't just watching inbreed hillbilly killers but that I was watching Ninja inbreed hillbillies in which their calling in life was to kill whoever they could.

No really NINJA hillbillies. They blended into the background and dressed up to hide themselves and jumped out from secret tunnels and were super duper hillbillies. I think I said "What?" at least 8 or 10 times while watching it just due to the ninja-ness of the hillbillies

There were also points in the movie where I wondered what the film making meetings were like.

"So, then these two guy meet back up with the other group that went off up the mountain."

"And all of this stuff happened, like their car is blow up, and they found some guy in a latrine that then died, and they watch this guy that was part of the group be grabbed by some crazy inbreed dude and get all pulled through a tiny space in an orgy of blood."

"But we think it'd be cool if no one talks about anything that's happened. That way we can make this one girl watching this scream 'Tell them about the car! The car! Does no one care that there's no escape? Hello!'"

"So yeah, it'll be awesome if no one tells anyone else anything that's happened to them!"

I swear. Also they wouldn't bother to I don't know... show that the car caught on fire and was merrily burning away. No, apparently someone thought it would be better to just show the car when it was all done burning to a crisp. Which just made me think these were the most unobservant guys manning a spooky secret deserted army post ever... you'd think they'd have smelled the fire? I mean the car was completely blackened you'd think that it would have had to be on fire for a long ass time and you'd think someone would have noticed the smoke and stuff. But no.

Also people making horror films if you talk about the latrine, and you show the latrine, and you don't let anyone near the latrine... if something is in the latrine well it's just not going to be all that shocking.

This was about the only film where after watching the unrated version I actually wished we'd gotten the rated version. Really at this point it's like I'm watching "Gore Porn" and I don't find that scary or interesting. I don't think I need to actually see a horrible birthing up close and personal in the first 5 minutes. Really you could cut away from the baby shooting out of the vagina... really. It's not scary or disturbing, it's kind of gross. I'd find it perhaps more disturbing if maybe it wasn't so in your face. Pull the camera back people, please.

I find most horror films being made now have some weird thing with showing too much. It's like I'm just assaulted with stuff that's suppose the be "scary" and I'm sort of bored and not scared cause there's so much of it. It seems like it's a fine balance, too little and it's not scary, too much and it's not scary either. But there certainly seems to be too much and too close in the current batch of horror films being made now. Thought it could also be just a piece of horror that doesn't interest me at all... I'm confident enough to not feel sad that there are things out there not made to my taste. Though I sort of enjoyed "Cabin Fever" (except for the really retarded parts that didn't seem to fit the rest of the film) and that film had a lot of gross things in it.

Anyway you might like "The Hills have Eyes 2" if you like gore. I think it might be an okay film if you have a bullet proof kink for that particular part of the horror film genre but it's nothing particularly amazing otherwise. It'd rate maybe a 5 or a 6 out of 10 for me. Not particularly bad but alas not anything to write home about either.

I had a hard time with my suspension of disbelief in certain parts, see my ninja hillbilly comment and such but yeah if gore and hillbillies are your thing and lord knows there are people who love that stuff, this might be a good movie for you. For people who would still really like to see this film and who don't like gore you might try the rated version. Though...

Strangely, even with that ugly last send off I feel oddly light and upbeat. My brain is a weird thing... the lever is stuck so far at happy I feel like rainbows are shooting out of my ass most of the time. I was defiantly very saddened and upset with that person level of hate but the sheer hilarity of the whole thing is setting in. Dude, I mean, wow! WOW! =O
I did send them a nice short reply to their email so I rather expect my part of this drama is complete.
In short, yay.
Okay she replied in email. Now I actually don't want to be unblocked at all. It's... I don't know this made me cry, it just sounds so bleak and sad. Don't bother to bug her please I'm done with this. But wow.

"I have a zero tolerance policy on certain things. Among them are: sexism, sexual assault, homophobia, child pornography, racism, war, and crazy bullshit in the name of religion. These are the things gravely wrong with our psychology. These are things that I am against morally and they broke no argument. There is no one that can convince me that any of these things are "ok" in any sort of situation. In the insane amount of writing and art I've read since junior high, Adam Warren has treated these subjects with the gravity and critical thought that they required. In this very important instance, with a work that had ridiculous potential, he did not. To me, this is a wrong that could only have been righted with recognition, an apology, and/or addressing what happened in that chapter in a later volume. None of these except the latter show signs of happening.

On subjects about anything else, I'm very willing to hear people discuss. If this was about whether Batman or Spiderman could win in a fight, I would not give a shit. I would not care if you liked some movie, some novel, some comic that bores me to tears. However, because this is a subject of a moral matter, I do not want people like you, whom I find morally repugnant and stunted, enjoying my work because from your comments I think you would be incapable. It is not that I don't want to hear your disagreement, though hearing it does lower my hopes for the world and saddens me that you could have been a "fan" of my work all this while.

Some people argue that "oh it's an opinion. opinions can't be wrong". That's stupid. Next time you're pulled over for a speeding ticket, try using the point that it's your opinion that you weren't speeding to get out of a ticket, see how that functions with things like facts and laws. We have brains so that we can reason through the world, so that we can determine what is right or wrong in complex situations.

Personally, I find it disgusting that people cannot get over their fan-stupidity to understand that what he did was fucked up and wrong. As I've said, I've followed him for something like 10 years. I got over him. As an adult with monetary vote, you are able to buy the things that you morally support, you are able to NOT buy the things that offend you, you are able to donate to charities, you are able to decide what you will and will not support.I find it horrifying that a woman of 30 years has the moral fiber of the 15 year old boys that comments how much they love the hot, naked chicks, and on an issue as sanguine as this one.

To summarize, I banned you because banning you renders you unable to comment to me, unable to support my work and I do not want a person like you to feel welcome to look at my work. If I could somehow block off all things relating to myself such as my website, my email, etc so that you would never be able to come into contact with me or my work, I would."

So this artist blocked me on DA, which made me really sad. It was almost pathetic how bad it made me feel that they think I need to be blocked from their DA account. I liked and enjoyed their work and always thought they seemed like an okay person. I know, I just should have not even bothered to spend that time to craft a comment about my opinion but I just felt I should say something. In the end they just blocked me so now I can't even see their art, which sucks.

Ah well, I don't feel bad that I posted. All I did was offer my take on something. I felt I was pretty even handed, I didn't attack her opinion or curse at her I just felt like I should say something. I'm repeating myself I think. I guess I figured she'd just ignore the comment instead of just blocking me completely.

So, I send her a polite "why" email cause I can't enjoy their art any more on my watch list and I can't note them here. I'm not going to make a whole new account just to sneak around their back. I have a hard enough time keeping the accounts I do have straight so why bother with someone who doesn't want me to enjoy their art. I figure if they don't want me that's fine I have spent money to buy their comics and commissioned them before. But I guess in the end if one comment makes them dislike me there's not much I can do.

It does make me wonder though why she thinks it's so weird that people use anonymous accounts to reply to her? Since she's so trigger happy with the blocks why risk your own account. Ah well, nothing I can do at this point. If she does unblock me I guess I'll just have to remember to only comment on the art. Sometimes I guess people don't really want to have a conversation when they state their opinions. I have no idea how I can tell this in advance but I guess I'll just keep it in mind.

I spent most of Saturday sleeping off my cold and then after I lazed about and played with Max, my kitten, I ended up at Shawwna's place playing a Zombie board game and watching movies. Nothing too amazing on the movie front, Daredevil, Return of the Living Dead, Hellboy and Constantine. Man, wow, that's almost all superhero films. I don't think it was planned just somehow what was on the channels, though I suggested Constantine. Mostly they were on as background noise while we played games and I tried not to get frustrated with art.

Daredevil was playing when I got there and I don't think we made it all the way through the thing. We killed it to watch "Return of the Living Dead" which is sort of interesting. It has running zombies in it and was made in the 80's judging by the outfits. Also the zombies think and can talk and honestly can't be killed. Sort of takes the fun out of the surviving part of survival horror stuff. I kind of wonder though why, if we've had running zombie films, do people talk about running zombies as being new? I remember people talking about running zombies that way when "28 days later" was released. It seems rather odd. Ah well, maybe it's the same people who just couldn't understand that the monsters in the "Silent Hill" weren't zombies.

On Friday night I got Max one of those cat jungle gyms. Was 21.00 bucks at Target. In fact it was this exact model:[link] . It's roughly 4 feet tall and is made up of blue large kid tinker toys with I swear what has to be parachute material for a two level house and netting for little platforms. It also has strange stuffed round shaped attack toys that hang down. In some way they remind me of some unused organ in the human body. I could say which organ and that just makes it worse.

So far, I think the damn thing would be way more fun for Max if it had another cat that came with it. But still I can poke the top of the cat tower and Max will jump up from the bottom hidey hole to attack the top. Instant kitty entertainment. Also the damn thing can break down to a tiny box that's only about 18" long and maybe 6" wide. Set up is pretty easy and it's actually kind of sturdy since Max hasn't manged to mangle it yet. He plays pretty rough with everything. I'll have to see if it keeps his interest. He get bored with toys. =/

I hope ya'lls weekend was fun.

I'll be sharing a table with my friend Shawnna in the artist alley area. I can only hope that Oni-con will be better then they "joy" that was Animefest. Sigh, oh anime conventions the better you get, the worst you get in ways I never imagined. =/

Still, aside from minor quibbles with convention fun... I hear Houston has awesome food places. I've never gone there with people who would actually go to those said awesome places but I'm hoping we can eat like fools this time. Yay, House of Pies.

I other news, I found a tiny 5 week old kitten. He was a terrible biter but after exposing his feral kitteness to Mike's 7 cats for two weeks and then again for a month he's mellowed out quite a lot. He's a good traveling kitty. I got to take him on the airplane and put him under my seat. The bad thing about taking the cat on the plane is the scary part where the stupid x-ray screening requires you to take the cat out of the carrier and hold them in your arms while walking through the stupid metal detector. It's not good. Still, the kitty play group really helped my kitten to learn not to bite hard or scratch as much. He still suckles though. =]

I finally got my code for the this new ad service called Project Wonderful [link] . So far it seems really awesome. They're based around a bidding model instead of clicks or views. So people wanting to put ads on your site bid a certain amount and those bids set the price of your ads. It's cool cause I can point you guys to my sites and tell you to click on these ads and it doesn't hurt anything or cause me any trouble... unlike the other ads I also have.

Also most of the advertisers are webcomic people which is nice cause they'll maybe actually be sites that people coming to my website would like to look at. Well, there's also the Anime Dating service... which I'm not so sure about people liking but I still find really amusing. So I point you guys to them to take a look at. Say if you want to check out some different services for putting ads on your site or for putting ads on other sites for your site. Or to click to see what my fine advertisers are trying to get you look at.

I've got 5 little ads here: [link]
And one banner ad here: [link]
I'm going to start posting new "My Muse" pages again on my webcomic site: [link] Possibly next week on Tuesday. I've got at least 6 pages ready and I'm working on 2 more and another color picture for it.
Scuttles off to poke at art.

Well, I'm finally done with all conventions and back home and I've mostly dug myself out of my pure hate for all things internet like. Although I'm still avoiding my friend's list proper so if you've posted about cool things on LJ, DA, or the web I've probably missed them all. I think I read maybe 6 journals at best right now. =[

It sort of sucks to feel shitty when looking at net stuff. It's like the most dysfunctional brain disease ever. Apparently other people's joy makes my skin inch. I'm trying to apply sun block in the hopes that I'll stop being a giant baby. Could take awhile.

Went to San Diego Comic con out in California and that was pretty cool other then the hotel nut crushing fee... I swear it's like a curse with us. But I got to wander the floor for once and talk to people stuck at booths and give out the tiny "My Muse" [link] minis that I made for giving away. So the con was a lot of fun and I spent way too much money buying things but I have a stack of new comics and books to look at. I meet up with some people at the show although I totally missed hanging out in front of the art show on Sunday cause we were sort of burned out by then and mostly just wanted to get on the highway before everyone else got on the highway.

Spent a lot of time hanging around and talking with John Kantz [link] and Chris Reids about art, comics, and the various fun and joy all of that is. It was fun times and I drew Kantz a picture... I should ask him to send it to me maybe. Me and Mike also had a chance to eat with E.T and Liz [link] the fine folks who helped us put out Saiko and Lavender as a comic, oh so long ago. Also got to poke at Carla Speed McNeil [link] a little. She does this awesome comic called Finder that I love... she has been posting it on-line recently so you can read it here: [link] . Briefly talked to Chris Sanders who I didn't realized was the guy from Lilo and Stitch... I suspected but I wasn't sure. I also hung out with Cliff for a bit which is always nice. Thanks for the neat puzzle by the way. I've been having fun making my friends figure out where all the little pieces go.

There were more people I meet up with including Rikki and Tavi [link] but I'm already hating life so I think I will keep this post short.

Still haven't talked about the fun that was A-kon. Sorry, I think I forgot in the mad rush of cons. Went with Chad [link] , Shawnna [link] and Sterling. Talked to Chris and John [link] there as well cause they live close to the con. That was also super awesome. Barely left the con table at A-kon. Friday was the best day sells wise which made me think either the con was going to be REALLY good for the money. Or what actually happened, that everyone spent all their money Friday and that Saturday and Sunday would make up for Friday with low sells. Snort. I meet up with Shirotsuki [link] from Deviant art by complete and total luck. She is a truly awesome artist and all around friendly sweet person. We traded sketches and it was cool.

Also, I got asked out by a girl at A-kon which was pretty cool. Went on two dates, one good, one so-so before she moved to another state. LOL, strike out. All and all, A-kon went pretty well.

Other then the constant string of cons, life has been really boring. I draw art for the day job and work on my comics at the slowest pace possible while still making pages. Right now I have 6 new My Muse pages but the story chunk won't end and needs another 2 pages at least before it can be posted. I'm hoping to really crank more pages out here as I want 300 My Muse pages. 300! So far I have 24, including the unposted pages. Need to work harder. Need to work. Work work work. Should stop reading what little internet I do read and work on the comic. Or at least get enough of the day job out of the way that comics can happen faster. Argh.

I also need a new computer and now that I actually have money (day job) I'm going to start looking. I want a tablet PC so I can draw on the screen and have a laptop, that'll be awesome.

Urgh, I think I will escape the net again. I need though to update LJ and DA a bit so I'll be back.

So yay I'm back from my trip to Anthro-con, where I impersonated myself and hung art for 4 people minus the other me. That was fun. The convention center for Antro-con is top notch and I'm glad Clubstripes [link] bought two tables. Even with one artist we still used all of the space. I had booth help from a good friend and also since he was living in Pittsburgh a place to stay that wasn't the hotel that cost 200 dollars a night... yowch.

His place in Pittsburgh was really neat too. He only lived on the base floor but he had 3 floors and a basement of space. Everything out there is tall and the houses are built incredibly close together... There doesn't seem to be much in the way of street lights. and I kept thinking that this was the perfect place to shank someone in the night. Thankfully no one decided that would be fun around his house. Staying at his place reminded me off going to camps where they have quint but rundown buildings for the kids to sleep in. Also some of his windows were put in upside down. =] Somehow the houses had a lot of style even thought they were tall 3 story rectangles.

Driving was fun too. What is up with the streets there? They are crazy. There's one intersection by his house that has a two way yield going under a coal train track that's elevated. one of space between the struts on the bridge is blocked by beams so both sides of ongoing traffic must make a run through the single opening. It's a good thing he lives on a dead end street. I wanted to take pictures of that one. The downtown area is a complete mess and they really need better signs around that town cause one wrong turn can take you across a river or two or out to the airport. We got lost so many times.

The con went very well for us. I got to talk to a lot of people and this time I had enough sleep to recognize some of them. Oh, and thanks so much Serenity for the con badge. That was super sweet. Got to talk to a few artists I liked here and there but mostly ran the booth. I did buy some art in the artshow and have so far managed to keep from putting them in a drawer and forgetting about them. Most art I buy ends up tucked away for some reason. It's possible because I don't have many good frames or that I know as an artist that sunlight destroys and thous I never want to hang stuff where it could fade.

I pimp people:

Matt Sherer of Badly Drawn Kitties [link] fame hung out with us and helped at Marcy's table which was next to ours. He was happy to come with us on our food adventures to the Brazilian Barbecue place which was an awesome cycle of meat cooking on swords that travel to your table. Tender juicy slightly cooked meats. It was good if pricey. Don't order the desserts though they're a bit over pricey. Over all though really worth it.

TK Labus [link] I bought some art show pictures from her and her group. They collaborate a lot so I have, I think, a part of something she and Amy Fennell "Lyosha" [link] drew. Which is cools. I also bought TK's con badge samples and I still wonder if I should have given her more money. Hmmm, it's probably okay. I liked their stuff much.

Talked very briefly to Ursula Vernon [link] who creates the comic Digger [link] which I enjoy a lot and in the archives is free right now for the Eisners. I actually voted this year.

Hmm, I meet a lot more people than that but I'm tired. So I will leave it here... I hope I fill in the rest and touch on A-kon. Cause I'm bad about this stuff a lot of the time. Heh I still need to paint that comic page.

I haven't been on the net much and I feel kind of internet-negative of late. I think, I'm just rather detached from what people are doing online since I'm getting back to drawing the comics. So far, I've finished a 2 page My Muse story with Reason and also I've gone back to my sad abandoned one pager that's grown to be 5 to 6 pages. As soon as I finish that longer story I'm going to start updating My Muse again on my webcomicsnation site [link]

The con season though is quickly approaching like a large truck with no headlights. I'm going to 2 cons back-to-back and I'm sure that will be a happy wonderful thing if I don't get sick or die.

I'm hitting A-Kon 17 [link] on June 9-11 in Dallas, Texas. I have a table in the Komik Market, in Section D, [link] Map of the Komik Market. I should also have panels in the art show... but I still have no idea what to put on them. Eh, I'm sure I've got stuff to put up.

Then the week after A-kon I'm going to Antro-con [link] on June 15-18 in Pittsburgh, PA. I'll be helping to run the Clubstripes booth in the dealers room and I'll have art in the art show.

Then about a month after that I head off to San Diego Comic Con [link] on July 20-23 in San Diego, CA. I won't have a booth but I'll have stuff in the art show and think I may decide on certain times to be at the art show itself so that if any of you guys want to meet me at the con you'll be able to find me. Unlike last year. Woe. I'm currently not hanging out at ANY of the booths I've been at before so the times I make to be at the art show will be the place to find me. Otherwise I'll be wandering the floor to look around and talk to people like all the rest of the peeps.

It appears that I'll probably be in Califorina for Anime Expo on Saturday and Sunday. I'll just be wandering around as far as I know. So I'm not going to be easy to find. Should be fun, but is it too much to hope that they run the convention better this time. I mean really last time I went Expo it was a mess.

Sigh, I've done almost no work to get ready for these cons. I really should get on that or something. At least I'm mostly ready for A-kon. =]

I've been signing up to advertising at different places for my webcomic Saiko and Lavender [link] and it's been interesting.

I tried the cheap Deviant Art ads that show up below your user info if you don't have a paid account. It had about a 1% click through which isn't bad for 100,000 page impressions. Still it wasn't wowing me with traffic.

Right now I'm trying the little tiny banner things at the top of the webcomiclist [link] and that's kind of interesting. It lasts for a long time about a month but there are a lot of comics that it cycles through so I'm not getting a lot of hits off of it. But the people that come by actually look a large section of my stuff.

Does anyone know of other places to advertise? I'm going to have ads running on Redstring in three weeks but I'm interested In other places.

Sadly, even if I could skip all the thinking and drawing and time it takes I'm sure my brain would defeat me in some other way... maybe it would conspire to throw me down some stairs or something. Push me in front of a bus?
I finally got to the end of my miscellaneous messages and the last one in there was from September the 2nd. Man... I haven't touched my watched deviations at all, those are just scary. o_O

Got my PHP website/blog put up: [link]

Bought a site to host all of my comics most of which I'll probably post here except for Saiko and Lavender since I'm already on page 50: [link]

Still blathering on my Livejournal: [link]

Did some greytoning for Slave Labor's Bill and Ted graphic novels. Which are awesome, they're drawn and written by Evan Dorkin and were just great to read before I toned them. Funny stuff very much like the movies.

Worked for Tokyopop for a bit and then didn't, that was fun. Let's say no more.

Generally felt crappy about comics, my career and a lot of other things... lost a friend over the above. Decided to not sweat it so much. Got an art job that pays slowly better over time and which is also completely hands off my rights and my art work. =]

Cuts this short, my Livejournal or website has more of the moopy if you want to look at it. Mostly I'm going to try and post art here for a bit! Yay!

Hmm, I'm been absent from DA for awhile but I've been posting art and stuff on my new php website [link] . It's still far from complete since I haven't figured out how to put in the webcomics or finish the new catalog interface but that's where all of my new art is going right now.

I'm still thinking about the DA agreement thingy. But I've pretty much decided it's safe enough to not worry about it. Not like it's really changed that much.

I'm not a big fan of the moble thing. So I just opted out ALTHOUGH I really wish I'd been given more then a week or two week warning. Hell, I wish they'd made it some thing you get as a full page splash info thing when you next logged in like all of the really silly "DA is great" dance thingys. Also I wished that untill you decided, after view the gaint splash page, that you wanted to do it or not do it that your gallery was marked undecided. I don't honestly check my email that much so a bigger warning would have been nice. Also not hiding the "OK" botton would have made me happier. I clicked all my stuff as inactive and it did NOT take effect because I didn't hit the seKrit "OK" button.

Anyway, new art and info on what I'm woring on right now is here ---> [link]

I will be back in a bit. No fear.

Okay this is just to move the politics journal bit off the front page. Go vote peeps.

Anyway I announced this on my LJ so I'm announcing it here too. Tokyopop announced the book/manga I'm working on, Dark Moon Diary [link]

So that means I can talk about the book as much as I want! Yay! Michael Vega is drawing it, Che Gilson is writing on it, and I'm the ever working inker/toner/letter. Here's a page from the book: [link] And here's the cover: [link]
I love toning and inking. The book looks really cool too. They haven't told us when it will be released but I'm figuring early next year. I'll let you know when they let us know.

Also I got a job toning about 22-44 pages of the collected "Bill and Ted" graphic novel by Evan Dorkin for Slave Labor Graphics. And yes Bill and Ted as in the movie "Bill and Ted." Dude!! It was originally published by Marvel in color but Slave Labor is grey toning them. I must thank Rikki Simons, he works on "Shutterbox" at TP, for the hook up. I still have so many pages left. T^T Soon I will be free.

Also, if you missed it, I posted some free digital screen tone. Please favorite it so that other peeps will be able to find it (or don't and just download it but it's not like I'm popular enough for everyone to see it). Here it is: [link]

Yay, for comics and for being able to make money doing them. I feel better with this post.

So Bush and voting and then there's this thing about having a draft... That really worries me... Along with all that other stuff that's going on like the net loss of 1 million jobs, the high deficit and large government spending, the gutting of sex education, the misuse and twisting of science facts, the missing WMDs, the stead fast refusal to admit to being wrong, the placing trust in faith over hard facts, civil liberties, and the no after war plan for Iraq.

So yeah, Anyway here's some info about the draft possiblility with links that support itself (this link takes you to the serious part of the site the rest of the site is a bit over the top)... [link]
And here's another take on it, link from AmandaRobbins: [link]
And here's a news article from New York times: [link]

Whee, fun with politics. Blog, I'm tired of this election...
Inking FAQ [link]

Hey all artist out there! I know people don't ask this often but...

Could you maybe type your name/pen name on your pictures? Or sign your name legibly.

It's just that, I've got this giant folder of images and I don't know who drew half of them...

And I want to know who drew that awesome picture! Your name doesn't have to be big, ugly, or mess things up but it's good to have a readable name of some sort on an image so that I can find you again. A website address would also be cool.

Yeah, because some times I save art and then I can't remember your name and even if I wanted to find you I can't. It seems to be a real problem with me and many others.

Anyway names on pictures and sketches would be nice.
Updated April 10th, 2008 originally posted Aug 23, 2004

Disclaimer: This is what I use to ink with/on you may use different tools and hey that's cool but yeah this is what I use.

Inking paper...

First off. All of the cool pens in the world won't help you if you ink on shitty paper... although the people who master 'Inking on shitty paper' are awesome and can rock it any where... but how about trying the nice stuff first before poking your eyes out struggling on the crap stuff?

To illustrate, I've always hated watercolor because the first things I did with it were done on regular printer paper and looked like crap. However watercolor is cool if you don't have to fight your supplies too. But don't worry the paper I'm suggesting is cheap and good so I won't break your wallet... I hope.

Deleter Comic paper is good and comes in two sizes. Doujin size is classified as Type-B and is a paper size of A4 is (about 8.5 x 11.5 inches) or Pro size which is a paper size of B4 which is classified as Type-A which is bigger (about 14.5 x 10 inches), all packs are 40 sheets, thin weight (about 1 ply) so making comics doesn't stack up all crazy like, and will run you about <strike>3.00-7.50 a pack</strike> now about 4.00-8.50 a pack. I personally like the plain or blank kind because I didn't need the Japanese comic grid as I draw in the panels on the computer now but the grid can be useful. You can find a whole list of Deleter paper for cheap here: http://japanimation.com/ or here: http://www.akadotretail.com/ New links!

I also like this Borden & Riley #234 Paris BleedProof Paper for Pens. It rocks hard core for inking or markers and it's smooth so you could use it for color pencil too. It's a little more expensive then the Deleter brand about <strike>(7.00-13.00)</strike> (now about 7.60-15.00) but the paper size is in inches and it goes a size larger then the Deleter paper. Like Deleter it's also 40 sheets a pack and is lightweight, about 1 ply. You can buy this stuff cheap here:
http://www.dickblick.com/zz106/01/products.asp?param=0&ig_id=931

I use some other more expensive paper for commissions and art show pieces but that stuff is more expensive and I don't really use it for comic inking so we'll move on.

Inking pens...

Right now I'm using 3 types exclusively and I'm hardly using the last type, the brush pen. I've left that one for last because it's expensive (almost 30.00 with shipping) and I'm not currently using it for my comics. However I personally love that pen so I'm leaving it in because I've inked whole comics with it. I'm just not right now.

I use these cool Tachikawa Japanese nib pens for my base inks...
http://www.ghostcircles.com/dxs/images/pen.jpg *Update* They now have these new version of this pen... I have never used this one but it's probably still pretty good. =] It now looks like this: http://www.ghostcircles.com/dxs/IC-tachis.jpg

<strike>You can buy them here for the low price of 3.75 (shipping is cheap too and after searching around I believe this place has the best price.)</strike> The new version runs about 5.00 a pen but since they are refillable it's probably still a pretty good deal honestly... I found them for sell here: http://www.akadotretail.com/product_info.php?products_id=8015#

They make this sexy thin line and you can fill/refill the ink cartridges with your own ink. However you have to run the tip of the pen under water sometimes to get the ink flowing again. Although it might be that I have to do this because I put Rapidograph black India Rapidraw ink.

That's a serious ink type. Webcomic (16 pages complete): [link]

Wheee,

I've got a job! A comic job no less and it doesn't suck! I'm all working for Tokyopop now. Heh heh, no RSoM for me but they pay me anyway. Giggly.

My friends Michael Vega, Che Gilson, and I are working on a book called 'Dark Moon Diary.' It's so cute and it has vampires. We need to work harder so we can get it on Tokyopop's manga player and in press releases so that all of you guy can see it. Damn you manga for taking so long to make! Shakes fist at sky!

I be the all-important inker, letter, sound effect maker, and now toner. Mike does pencils, he'll take over the lettering and now only a little of the toning. Che is the writer. Ugh, the jobs are getting as confusing as they were on Saiko and Lavender. @_O

Mike keeps drawing these cool ass backgrounds but then I'm all crying when I have to ink them... weepings. At some point I will post examples of background fun. Yes.

So right now I'm doing mostly that and not my own art. Secret comic of terrible size is going slower then ever. I think it has something to do with submitting it around. I tend to feel less motivated after the comics have been mailed off for consideration. But I need to keep at it. I want to have it half way done or better yet finished by the end of the year. =/ If not I just feel like a terrible tease.

I'm happy though that the Tokyopop job pays. I don't feel so bad about slacking because now I'm not poor. Er, well, I'm still broke but at least now I get a chunk of money for doing art and that's better then shitty part time at crappy non-art any day. Also our comic is cool and fun to work on.

In writing news I actually wrote a short story... it was a story and it was short!! I'm so happy. Although I went back and looked at it and it needs so much work. But at least I did it so now I have something to work with.

I'm ramble so now I will go ink things. I went to San Diego comic con and it was cool but I'll have to talk about that laters.
----

I think I'm not sick any more. Yay! Too bad I still can't sleep. Grumbles.

Dear god in heaven, I love Illustrator!!! After talking with art buddy Michael Vega I decided to tackle a logo design and in like 30 mins had like the coolest thing for him. I'm so pleased I want to make a real picture in Illustrator. Thanks to I think I could do it. She helped me rethink how I use the bastardy program so now I can do like the coolest stuff. Hee hee. It's too bad I only have Illust 8... I need to upgrade to CS for OS X. As it is I have to boot OX 9 to use Illustrator.

Now, I have to hope Mike likes my design but the bastard went to sleep and he doesn't stalk me here or check his email... hmmm, I'll post a preview to my work servers and hope that he will see it there. ^_^

Renames the file to be sure. File name now screams in all caps for Mike to look at it.

My comic job is nice and I'm enjoying myself. However my own project suffers. I'll need to work harder if I'm going to finish the first issue of the 'Secret horror comic of terrible size' so I can shop it around at San Diego Comic con. I get a free badge! Thanks comics!

Other then work not much happening other then avoiding all contact with humans so as not to spread my plauge. But I want to see someone! :weep:

I go, maybe sleep. Oh, yeah I was going to post my comic "Return to Green Hollow" here so yeah, watch for it. I'll start that tomorrow. I post the cover in a second...
