Heres the deal:
One of the guys on my course is re-designing a website for this restaurant in Woking (i think) called 'The Biz', and they needed a whole load of new photographs. Thats my entry, seeing as i've already done a portrait of this guy before, and he was more than happy with the results [link]

Turns out i'm gonna be paid a sizeable amount for this shoot, and now it seems that unlike all the shitty anime people on this site who abuse the japanese language, I can actually say i've been commissioned to do something. Thats right, I went there, and I can because i've got my A* in Japanese already and don't just say kawaii all the fucking time.

Sorry for the bitter entry, but those anime people do just get on my nerves with their clear lack of basic knowledge in their medium.

As far as my backlog of photos goes i'm still sorting through london zoo photos, then i've got Warnham Nature Reserve to sort out as well, so its gonna be a while before theres a proper commissioned photo up here from 'The Biz'

If anyone has some sneaky tips on food portraits, please share, otherwise i'm shooting everything about f/8-16 with natural light, then playing around with the white balance

Please join me on Facebook by becoming a fan!
[link]

And please check out my Prog Metal band on Facebook!
[link]

Photography Roadmap

 Entry Level DSLR:
Completed Mid 2008, Nikon D40

52mm Polarising Filter:
Completed Late 2008, Camlink 52mm Polariser

 Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
Completed Jan 2009, Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5

77mm UV Filter:
Completed Jan 2009, Jessops 77mm Skylight Filter

77mm 0.9 ND Filter:
Completed Feb 2009, Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter

Prime Normal f/1.4 or f/1.8 Lens:
Completed July 2009, Nikkor 35mm f/1.8

52mm UV Filter:
Completed July 2009, Jessops 52mm UV Filter

 DX Format Telephoto Lens:
Completed August 2009, Nikk...

About a week ago now I went on a trip with aka. Joe, to do some nature and landscape photography. Warnham Nature Reserve happened to be walking distance from my place, and only £1 to get in so it was an obvious choice.

I think we snapped about 1000 photos altogether (to add that to the 1000 I took with Jay not long before at London Zoo), and i've been busily editing through them. Theres definitely some of the best landscape stuff done there, and we got incredibly lucky when we stumbled onto the golf course there just after it had rained. Mist was rising off the grass all around making the sunset look more like a sunrise which i've never seen.

As for nature photography there, it was mostly ducks, geese and swans, although we did see a heron, but it was on the other side of the reservoir...

I've still got even more from London Zoo to upload, and also I got a few wallpaper requests so i'll be sorting them out for people before I can even start with photos from Warnham...

And I start Uni soon, and i'm starting running with my mate, and i've still got my friend's album to finish mastering... but i'll try and get stuff done!

Please join me on Facebook by becoming a fan!
[link]

And please check out my Prog Metal band on Facebook!
[link]

Photography Roadmap

 Entry Level DSLR:
Completed Mid 2008, Nikon D40

52mm Polarising Filter:
Completed Late 2008, Camlink 52mm Polariser

 Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
Completed Jan 2009, Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5

77mm UV Filter:
Completed Jan 2009, Jessops 77mm Skylight Filter

77mm 0.9 ND Filter:
Completed Feb 2009, Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter

Prime Normal f/1.4 or f/1.8 Lens:
Completed July 2009, Nikkor 35mm f/1.8

52mm UV Filter:
Completed July 2009, Jessops 52mm UV Filter

 DX Format Teleph...

So I went to London Zoo the other day, the first proper time i've gotten to use my latest lens, the 55-200mm f/4-5.6. I think together, myself and my friend managed to snap over 1000 shots. After a bit of editing, i've chosen 62 great ones, and i'll be uploading the best of that lot up here.

Lets see what I learnt then:
1) Never bother carrying a wide angle around all day
2) Autofocus is 100% essential (my friend's 60mm macro doesn't AF on our D40's)
3) To shoot through grills you need to jam your lens right up against them to let the light Diffract
4) ISO 1600 is necessary. Perhaps ISO 3200 would be even better in some cases.
5) VR is necessary
6) 200mm as the longest focal length isnt always long enough

A load of these photos i'll be uploading WILL also be uploaded by and thats cool, because our cameras were used interchangeably, so don't report us.

On another note, I don't mean to be petty with the Nikon Vs Canon thing, but Canon has lost 10% of their marketshare in the last 3 years, while Nikon gained another 4% to add to their lead... so err, Nikon WIN!

Please join me on Facebook by becoming a fan!
[link]

And please check out my Prog Metal band on Facebook!
[link]

Photography Roadmap

 Entry Level DSLR:
Completed Mid 2008, Nikon D40

52mm Polarising Filter:
Completed Late 2008, Camlink 52mm Polariser

 Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
Completed Jan 2009, Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5

77mm UV Filter:
Completed Jan 2009, Jessops 77mm Skylight Filter

77mm 0.9 ND Filter:
Completed Feb 2009, Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter

Prime Normal f/1.4 or f/1.8 Lens:
Completed July 2009, Nikkor 35mm f/1.8

52mm UV Filter:
Completed July 2009, Jessops 52mm UV Filter

<img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/p/pointr.gif" width="11" height="10" alt="...

I just got given my mum's old Olympus Trip 35 film camera the other day. I doubt most people will remember this unless you were around in the 70s, but this was one of the best selling camera's ever made.

I must be honest, and the only film cameras i've ever used are single use cameras, but i'm definitely gonna be looking to grab some ISO 400 stuff when I get a chance. Theres only two shutter speeds, so i'm expecting ISO 400 should allow me to select the smaller apertures that give me the great depth of field i'll need for landscape work (without a flash, i'll not be taking any portraits with this thing).

I am enjoying the simple nature of this camera, did you know it doesn't even need a battery?! It's light meter is so basic that it just doesn't need a power supply. Its got a 4 element, 3 group 40mm f/2.8 lens, that i'm guessing will have a far amount of distortion, but this camera is sooooo incredibly cheap that i'd expect a few dodgy things.

Of course i'll be uploading the shots I get (assuming they're good), and this thing will be in my camera bag whenever I go into the field. Even if I get nothing, it should be good experience at least.

Please join me on Facebook by becoming a fan!
[link]

And please check out my Prog Metal band on Facebook!
[link]

Photography Roadmap

 Entry Level DSLR:
Completed Mid 2008, Nikon D40

52mm Polarising Filter:
Completed Late 2008, Camlink 52mm Polariser

 Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
Completed Jan 2009, Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5

77mm UV Filter:
Completed Jan 2009, Jessops 77mm Skylight Filter

77mm 0.9 ND Filter:
Completed Feb 2009, Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter

Prime Normal f/1.4 or f/1.8 Lens:
Completed July 2009, Nikkor 35mm f/1.8

52mm UV Filter:
Completed July 2009, Jessops 52mm UV Filter

 DX Format Telephoto Lens:
Completed August 2009, Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VR <img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/happycry2.gif" width="15" height="15" alt=":happycry:" t...

So err, another new lens! Im getting quite a collection now, and i've finally managed to get an important addition to my collection with a telephoto zoom.

I had to settle for the DX format telephoto, equivalent to something like 80-300mm on Full Frame, but thats plenty for now. Its not the telephoto i'll settle for though, as i'm still set on one day owning the 70-200mm f/2.8.

Oh, and Canada is amazing. I've got another 3 days here, and we're visiting Niagra Falls this evening. A quick check on here shows that while theres a number of photos of this place already, they're all slightly flawed with Noise being a major issue. So i've got a benchmark at least to set myself against.

I've probably got about 20 more photos from my trip here that i'll upload at some point, mostly from the family wedding I attended in Montreal.

Photography Roadmap

 Entry Level DSLR:
Completed Mid 2008, Nikon D40

52mm Polarising Filter:
Completed Late 2008, Camlink 52mm Polariser

 Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
Completed Jan 2009, Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5

77mm UV Filter:
Completed Jan 2009, Jessops 77mm Skylight Filter

77mm 0.9 ND Filter:
Completed Feb 2009, Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter

Prime Normal f/1.4 or f/1.8 Lens:
Completed July 2009, Nikkor 35mm f/1.8

52mm UV Filter:
Completed July 2009, Jessops 52mm UV Filter

 DX Format Telephoto Lens:
Completed August 2009, Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VR

52mm UV Filter:
Completed August 2009, Optex 52mm UV Filter

 External Flash (probably Nikon SB-400):
Not Complete

3rd Party Battery Grip for D40:
Not Complete

Wide-Telephoto Zoom Lens (at least from 18-200mm)
Not Complete

77mm UV Filter:
Not Complete

77mm Polarising Filter:
Not Complete

77mm Warming Filter:
Not Complete

<img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/bulletred.gif" width="10" height="10" alt=":bulletred:" t...

Yesterday I went out for some landscape work during sunset, and I really don't know why I never thought to try this before. The slightly muted sunlight that you get when the sun goes down makes it perfect for getting far less contrast than I usually find during the day.

Its all obvious now, and carrying a tripod is now worth it with my shutter averaging around half a second which is good. Its just a shame nature tried to rain on me (and eventually would strike lightening) as I was really getting some great photos. But the incoming cloud formation made for some great skies which im sure you'll see in my recent submissions

I just can't wait to get to Canada in just under 2 weeks so I can try my hand at photographing some new land!

By the way, has anyone else tried the portfolios tool? I had a quick go last night, and its pretty good!

Photography Roadmap

 Entry Level DSLR:
Completed Mid 2008, Nikon D40

52mm Polarising Filter:
Completed Late 2008, Camlink 52mm Polariser

 Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
Completed Jan 2009, Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5

77mm UV Filter:
Completed Jan 2009, Jessops 77mm Skylight Filter

77mm 0.9 ND Filter:
Completed Feb 2009, Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter

Prime Normal f/1.4 or f/1.8 Lens:
Completed July 2009, Nikon 35mm f/1.8

52mm UV Filter:
Completed July 2008, Jessops 52mm UV Filter

 External Flash (probably Nikon SB-400):
Not Complete

Wide-Telephoto Zoom Lens (at least from 18-200mm)
Not Complete

77mm UV Filter:
Not Complete

77mm Polarising Filter:
Not Complete

77mm Warming Filter:
Not Complete

77mm Gradient Filter:
Not Complete

77mm IR Filter:
Not Complete

Upgrade DSLR (midrange or prosumer model DX Sensor, perhaps a D90 or D300):
Not Complete

<img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emot...

Ok, I go on quite a bit about being an audio engineer and having quite a lot of knowledge of this field. But im guessing few of my watchers have even heard anything i've written and produced. My recent antics on the forum, with my stance being that you need to know your stuff to apply it creatively, were greatly criticised unfortunately, and i'd like to give some credibility to what i said there.

Some of you may know, that recently I was left by a girl who I always thought id spend my life with. Not only that, but she had the nerve to leave a bill of £2400 for the rent she wasn't now going to pay, so being rather pissed off I wrote a 19 minute long prog metal track to get across quite what she'd been stupid enough to leave.

I'm not gonna charge any fee for downloading this track, but i'd just like those critics to see that my stance has it's uses, and without my knowledge in digital audio, the results would have been far worse.

Rapidshare Link:
[link]

Photography Roadmap

 Entry Level DSLR:
Completed Mid 2008, Nikon D40

52mm Polarising Filter:
Completed Late 2008, Camlink 52mm Polariser

 Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens:
Completed Jan 2009, Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5

77mm UV Filter:
Completed Jan 2009, Jessops 77mm Skylight Filter

77mm 0.9 ND Filter:
Completed Feb 2009, Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter

Prime Normal f/1.4 or f/1.8 Lens:
Completed July 2009, Nikon 35mm f/1.8

52mm UV Filter:
Not Complete

 External Flash (probably Nikon SB-400):
Not Complete

Wide-Telephoto Zoom Lens (at least from 18-200mm)
Not Complete

77mm UV Filter:
Not Complete

77mm Polarising Filter:
Not Complete

77mm Warming Filter:
Not Complete

77mm Gradient Filter:
Not Complete

77mm IR Filter:
Not Complete

Upgrade DSLR (midrange or prosumer model DX Sensor, perhaps a D90 or D30...

What the hell? I post one forum topic hoping for some educated discussion about the feasibility of Digital Systems approaching the quality of Film. I was hoping for some educated people to reply (those with engineering or graphics degrees) and get some high class discussion going about the advantages and disadvantages about the digital signal processing chain.

Unfortunately, no one seems to know a single thing about this, with one particular individual even offering maths proof for his incorrect knowledge which I couldnt help but laugh at.

This sort of thing I discuss all the time with the guys on my course. Perhaps we go into too much depth with engineering, and over analyse it all, but when it comes to creative use of our skills, we get results through applying what we've learnt. Its why my course holds a world famous reputation.

To me though, its pretty obvious that a lot of photographers just don't have this keen interest in the engineering side to even the most basic photography principles. I'd even place money on few reading this being able to accurately describe Aperture calculations and how they link in with Diffraction to alter depth of field, yet to someone who knows its incredibly simple.

What the hell happened to the world?! Does no one care about academic studies anymore because they're too obsessed with maximising their views on deviantART?

Photography Roadmap

 Entry Level DSLR:
Completed Mid 2008, Nikon D40

52mm Polarising Filter:
Completed Late 2008, Camlink 52mm Polariser

 Ultra Wide Angle Lens:
Completed Jan 2009, Tamron 10-24mm Lens

77mm UV Filter:
Completed Jan 2009, Jessops 77mm Skylight Filter

77mm 0.9 ND Filter:
Completed Feb 2009, Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter

77mm Warming Filter:
Not Complete

77mm Gradient Filter:
Not Complete

77mm IR Filter:
Not Complete

External Flash (probably Nikon SB-400):
Not Complete

Wide-Telephoto Zoom (at least from 18-200mm)
Not Complete

UV Filter:
Not Complete

Polarising Filter?
Not Complete

Upgrade DSLR (midrange or prosumer model DX Sensor, perhaps a D90):
Not Complete

 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 Lens:
Not Complete

UV Filter:
Not Complete

Extended Telephoto Lens (unless the a previous telephoto lens is sufficient):
Not Complete

Friends:
<img class="avatar" src="http://a.deviantart.net/avatars/default.gif" alt=":ico...

Just before I go listing stuff, I was thinking, and would anyone else say that "knowing when not to press the shutter" might be the most important aspect to creating a great photo?

But anyway, I posted a journal a few months ago, that listed my comparisons between audio and photography. Looking back on it, I realise that a lot of it is wrong. So here is my revised list.

Straight Analogies:
Shutter = Record Button
Shutter Speed = Relates to the SPL (sound pressure level) of the source at the diaphragm of the microphone.
Focal Length = Relates to Microphone Choice. An Omni mic is an Ultrawide, and going up to a Gun Mic which is your Telephoto
Dynamic Range = Signal to Noise Ratio
Lens = Microphone
Hot Areas = Clipped Signal
Cold Areas = Signal below noise floor
Infrared = Subsonic (DC to 20Hz)
Ultraviolet = Supersonic (20kHz +)
Monochrome = Mono
Colour = 3 Channel Stereo
Noise = Noise
ISO = Gain
Exposure Compensation = Gain (On the Fader)
Resolution = Sample Rate
Fine Detail = High Frequencies
Large Objects = Low Frequencies
Bit Depth = Bit Resolution
RAW = PCM Wave
JPEG = MP3/AAC etc.
Moire = Aliasing (but its also called Aliasing in imaging)
Adjusting Levels = Normalising
Continuous Shooting Mode = Looped overdubs recording multiple takes of the same section
Shifting Black Point Level = Noise Gate

Partial Analogies:
Min. Focusing Distance = You cannot focus a microphone. But get too close to a microphone and you risk damaging the diaphragm, so it could relate to this.
Aperture = Also relates to the SPL of the source, and the balance between sources. It could be viewed directly, so perhaps would be similar to placing a parabolic reflector behind the mic that increases the level of sound reaching the diaphragm
High Dynamic Range Image = Comping perhaps, but what its really doing is what a compressor does and squashes the dynamic range
Metering (in general) = Pre Fade Listen
Reviewing Photos = After Fade Listen

Farfetched:
AF = Doesn't exist. You cannot focus a microphone. But our ears can focus, so this could relate to the portion of our brain that deals with sound
White Balance = Could relate to subjective factors such as how 'Bright' a recording sounds
Sensor Dimensions = Could relate to the size of the microphone diaphragm, but a large diaphragm microphone has poor high frequency response, unlike a larger camera sensor, so I don't know with this one
Flash = It has a similar effect to moving one sound source closer to the microphone in comparison to others, but I cannot think of an analogy for this one

I was also wondering why we can't use digital systems for photography to re-create the exact original, like we do in audio. Then it hit me that the resolution of the human eye (somewhere in the region of 600 Megapixels) is far harder to replicate than the resolution of the human ear (with 20kHz being an easily attainable frequency), and to the resolution of the camera, the result is an exact representation of original. My bad...

Photography Roadmap

 Entry Level DSLR:
Completed Mid 2008, Nikon D40

52mm Polarising Filter:
Completed Late 2008, Camlink 52mm Polariser

 Ultra Wide Angle Lens:
Completed Jan 2009, Tamron 10-24mm Lens

77mm UV Filter:
Completed Jan 2009, Jessops 77mm Skylight Filter

77mm 0.9 ND Filter:
Completed Feb 2009, Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter

77mm Warming Filter:
Not Complete

77mm Gradient Filter:
Not Complete

77mm IR Filter:
Not Complete

External Flash (probably Nikon SB-400):
Not Complete

Wide-Telephoto Zoom (at least from 18-200mm)
Not Complete

UV Filter:
Not Complete

Polarising Filter?
Not Complete

Upgrade DSLR (midrange or prosumer model DX Sensor, perhaps a D90):<b...

It turns out the prize money for the SPLASH photo competition was actually £25, which has now been donated to the Marie Curie Cancer Care Charity. I must say, it feels very good to know i've contributed towards a cause which has affected me personally in the past. I'm sure many of my friends here have had similar experiences. Thanks extend to my friend Shelley, who also donated her share of the money towards the same cause.

It may seem strange, but i'm almost a second year university student (assuming i've passed these exams), while only 10 journals ago I was still a fresher. Things have changed drastically for me, I feel more educated in my field of engineering, and i've decided that drinking is something i'll reserve for very special occasions, as its such a huge waste of money.

I've got a small backlog of photos to upload at the moment, and when I finish the exam period i'll do some post production on them and get them up soon

Photography Roadmap

 Entry Level DSLR:
Completed Mid 2008, Nikon D40

52mm Polarising Filter:
Completed Late 2008, Camlink 52mm Polariser

 Ultra Wide Angle Lens:
Completed Jan 2009, Tamron 10-24mm Lens

77mm UV Filter:
Completed Jan 2009, Jessops 77mm Skylight Filter

77mm 0.9 ND Filter:
Completed Feb 2009, Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter

77mm Warming Filter:
Not Complete

77mm Gradient Filter:
Not Complete

77mm IR Filter:
Not Complete

External Flash (probably Nikon SB-400):
Not Complete

Wide-Telephoto Zoom (at least from 18-200mm)
Not Complete

UV Filter:
Not Complete

Polarising Filter?
Not Complete

Upgrade DSLR (midrange or prosumer model DX Sensor, perhaps a D90):
Not Complete

 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 Lens:
Not Complete

UV Filter:
Not Complete

Extended Telephoto Lens (unless the a previous telephoto lens is sufficient):
Not Complete

Friends:
<img class="avatar" src="http://a.deviantart.com/avatars/d/a/day...

Just ordered a 0.9 Neutral Density Filter as a complete impulse buy!

I think I need to take landscape work more seriously, and if photography is gonna be a large portion of my life and be the cause of all arguments on future family vacations when I want to get up at 4am, then I need to get some proper gear and make some fine art photographs.

The ND Filter means i'm gonna have to carry a tripod which i've been quite against for some time. But I think i'm growing up a bit. Professionals use tripods all the time for landscape work, and there's no way I could hold my camera still for 8 times longer than usual. My plan is to go to Farthing Downs again at some point when i'm spending a weekend back from uni, then take some ridiculous photos with shutter speeds well over 15 seconds (hopefully by combining ISO 200 with f/22). This may not be for a few weeks, and I need to wait for the filter to arrive first anyway.

Photography Roadmap

 Entry Level DSLR:
Completed Mid 2008, Nikon D40

52mm Polarising Filter:
Completed Late 2008, Camlink 52mm Polariser

 Ultra Wide Angle Lens:
Completed Jan 2009, Tamron 10-24mm Lens

77mm UV Filter:
Completed Jan 2009, Jessops 77mm Skylight Filter

77mm 0.9 ND Filter:
Completed Feb 2009, Tiffen 0.9 ND Filter

77mm Warming Filter:
Not Complete

77mm Gradient Filter:
Not Complete

77mm IR Filter:
Not Complete

External Flash (probably Nikon SB-400):
Not Complete

Wide-Telephoto Zoom (at least from 18-200mm)
Not Complete

UV Filter:
Not Complete

Polarising Filter?
Not Complete

Upgrade DSLR (midrange or prosumer model DX Sensor, perhaps a D90):
Not Complete

 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 Lens:
Not Complete

UV Filter:
Not Complete

Extended Telephoto Lens (unless the a previous telephoto lens is sufficient):
Not Complete

My Best Friend in the world

Friends:
<img class="avatar" sr...

I've just managed to pass the 10,000 Deviation views mark. Must say, it feels rather nice, and with an average of 78ish, im feeling rather good about it I think a large portion came from my wallpaper version of Modern II [link] which has 1384 views at the time of writing, also making it my first deviation with over 1000 views.

I'll try and get some new photos if possible, but i'm back at university at the moment, with no snow predicted or any trips planned, so it may be a while before I manage to get anything new for a while.

On a more annoying note, I recently discovered the existence of a load of killjoys called the Parents Television Council. Visit their website if you want to get angry at something. They go out of their way to slate anything TV show which isn't approved by the bible. Their list includes Family Guy, American Dad, The Simpsons, and even Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Photography Roadmap

 Entry Level DSLR:
Completed Mid 2008, Nikon D40

52mm Polarising Filter:
Completed Late 2008, Camlink 52mm Polariser

 Ultra Wide Angle Lens:
Completed Jan 2009, Tamron 10-24mm Lens

77mm UV Filter:
Completed Jan 2009, Jessops 77mm Skylight Filter

77mm Warming Filter:
Not Complete

77mm Gradient Filter:
Not Complete

77mm IR Filter:
Not Complete

External Flash (probably Nikon SB-400):
Not Complete

Wide-Telephoto Zoom (at least from 18-200mm)
Not Complete

UV Filter:
Not Complete

Polarising Filter?
Not Complete

Upgrade DSLR (midrange or prosumer model DX Sensor, perhaps a D90):
Not Complete

 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 Lens:
Not Complete

UV Filter:
Not Complete

Extended Telephoto Lens (unless the a previous telephoto lens is sufficient):
Not Complete

My Best Friend in the world

Friends:
...

I am a free member of deviantART, and have never subscribed. But the amount of sheer advertising on my page is actually ridiculous. I counted over 20 unique things trying to make me subscribe. I appreciate that deviantART is a business no matter how much they want us to believe they want people to develop their artistic abilities, but I think perhaps 3-5 messages would be acceptable.

Since the new profiles, I instantly see at the top either 'Upgrade Now', 'Subscribe Today', 'Get a Subscription'. Looking down 20 pixels asks me to 'Subscribe Now'. Then on every box in my profile I am told in BOLD LETTERS that subscribers get better features than me, a mere below average non-subscriber. Just incase I forgot, it also tells me on my profile that I am 'Not Subscribed' next to how long i've been on the site.

The only way I will subscribe is if someone buys it for me, or I start to sell LOADS of prints.

But enough of a rant for today, Thank you to everyone who has viewed the Modern II Wallpaper [link] which will soon have over 1000 views if it continues.
I think I might have missed a major weather forecast at some point due to the masses of snow that fell over the whole of the UK. But its provided me with some fantastic opportunities, which I grabbed early on and late at night before the 'tourists' came and photographed everything with their iPhones and left footprints everywhere.

Life with a Tamron is surprisingly good I must add. It is noticeably soft at large apertures, but this can be used to creative effect. A flash may be necessary as the built in one doesn't propagate fully past the lens, but for now I have no choice as i've run out of money. Definitely a good call grabbing the lens before March though

Another point, the Nikon D40 isn't meant to be weatherproof, but screw that, its been soaked 4 times in the last 24 hours from my stupid photography angles and taking it out in sub-zero blizzards.
I think its time to upgrade from the kit lens that came with my D40. While its one of the best lenses Nikon makes, with excellent results at fast apertures and an impressive focusing distance for macro work, its just not wide enough for proper landscape work, which i'm rather keen on at the moment.

There are 3 potential candidates for an upgrade.
Sigma 10-20mm
Tamron 10-24mm
Nikon 12-24mm

I would get the Nikon ideally, but its almost twice what both the others cost, unless I go B-stock, which im not too keen on from previous experiences with B-stock audio equipment. But its Nikon quality, and I can be pretty certain it will do everything I could ever want with minimum distortion.

The Tamron is slightly faster than the sigma, but is ever so slightly soft at that fast aperture. But I tried one today and it wasn't unbearable. And the zoom range is the best of all 3 lenses.

The Sigma is the cheapest, with poor construction, but good optics at all apertures. But is only about £30 cheaper than the tamron anyway.

Anyone want to try and swing me one way or the other?

My Best Friend in the world

Friends:

Clubs:
<img class="avatar" src="http://a.deviantart.com/avatars/p/a/panoramaclub.gif" width="50" height="50" alt="...

They were all shot at sunset with no filters because I literally ran out to try and catch the sunset before the christmas pudding was served.

Buckan Country Park

Shot in Mid Afternoon with the temperature around 0. At the far end away from the sun it was still frozen, so I got some shots of that. Had to dodge the dog walkers as much as possible which made it a bit tricky, and I also decided that this place would be great when the lake was still frozen, early in the morning so i'd be coming back here for another shooting session.

Mill Pond

This was a small pond in the middle of an expensive set of houses in Horsham. Would be a fantastic place to live, but i'd be worried about flooding. Shot in Mid Morning while it was completely frozen still. I used my Polarising Filter for every shot here. I think the temperature was slightly above freezing by this time of day, but I still couldn't feel my fingers

Buckan Country Park Morning

Shot from 7:30 to 8:30am while the sun was rising. Temperature was about -6 degrees, so my fingers went numb very quickly making everything difficult to do. Also, my polarising filter expanded when it became warm again making it stick to my lens for a while. I also ended up with neck problems and blisters on my fingers from the cold. The lake is quite near Gatwick Airport, and with the slightly cloudy conditions, planes left trails overhead which I used in a few photos.

Also:
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep hands warm and still operate a camera?

My Best Friend in the world

Friends:
<img class="avatar" src="http://a.deviantart.co...

One other things ive noticed when simply comparing these two fields is the differing attitudes they both hold, and the general ease of use of the gear as it gets more expensive.

It seems a great photographer can create a great photograph regardless of the kit.

But a great sound engineer can't feasibly create a great recording with crap gear. It just won't happen, and instead of trying to make it work, like a photographer would do, a professional engineer will insist on the most expensive gear at all times.

Now im sort of torn between wanting the most expensive gear for sound engineering, or taking the photography attitude and buying a load of crap...

The gear also changes. Professional cameras like the D3 will take amazing photos on auto, without any real need for the user to do anything. Crap cameras will need to be reined in if possible to get any decent photos out of them. But with sound engineering, the more expensive it is... the more of an absolute bitch it is to make work.

Take 2-inch tape machines... They are exclusively for professionals, and the best engineers in the world will struggle to set them up to press record in under 20 minutes. Garageband costs £60 with all of the iLife suite, and will start up in as little time as it takes you to move the mouse.

And I thought they were alike a week ago

My Best Friend in the world

Friends:

Clubs:

(ill admit this doesn't really fit in Audio, unless you call it gain again)

Or maybe my course is just getting to me and I might be mad... ive started dreaming in decibels now after all

If anyone wants to challenge me to find some more analogies, im more than happy to have a go

My Best Friend in the world

Friends:

Clubs:
<img class="avatar" src=...

Im ordering one soon!

I just sold my car, so ive attained a rather large sum of money with which to spend on a treat for myself . Besides, my macbook is sorta falling apart, and seeing as how im a future sound engineer i need to be able to do location recordings and need something fast enough to record 10 24-bit 48kHz audio tracks if i need to record an orchestra. My current one doesnt quite reach those blazing speeds.

The dual graphics cards will also be a big boost for photography. Ill be able to edit things far quicker, rather than having to wait a couple of seconds for any adjustment to take place.

The best thing is the massive saving i get for being at uni. Im getting about £400 off and a free printer with it all

And im still working with a tesco value camera, and theres around 18 shots left now.

Edit:
Due to the decreasing in the VAT rate, i save about £100 on it as well

My Best Friend in the world

Friends:

Clubs:

I was in tescos yesterday when i mentioned to my friend that it shouldnt matter what camera you have, you should still be able to take a good photo with it.

So i now have a new camera It is a tescos value range single use camera. 27 exposures on standard ISO 400 film.

Im down to 24 shots left, and im heavily rationing them... even though the camera only cost £2, making it 7p a shot...

If theres any good ones you can probably guarantee they will be up here with a very big smile from me Especially if I manage to get one to compare the £2 camera to my £300 Nikon D40 where the tescos value range camera wins

Early impressions of the camera suggest that id probably choose the nikon though, simply cos of the shite viewfinder on the tescos one which is probably only 5mm high...

Plus I am severely limited by the lack of features such as shutter speed... which is probably locked at something around 1/200th.

But im gonna do my best

[link] <<< for a photo of the camera

My Best Friend in the world

Friends:

Clubs:

Whats with this craze thats sweeping photographers on DA to put a couple of photos together which have similar colours. You know the ones, they seem to be popping up everywhere and to be honest, they just look like the photographer is trying a little too hard to be artistic.
