Quick question: What is the estimated cost of all the tools necessary to create such masks? That is, not including any actual leather, but just the tools, like in the ultimate toolkit which you have.

I made my first masks with nothing but a barebones 'tooling' set (comes with a swivel knife and basic stamps), a modeling spoon, a ballpoint pen (for tracing patterns), printer paper ( for printing patterns), and a heavy duty utility blade. Altogether with a 40% off coupon from Hobby Lobby these things cost around $50.

This year is going to be my biggest year yet at DragonCon!  I'll have a table in the artist alley, a large gallery bay, and a 3D display table in addition to all the rest!  This will also be my first year giving a panel on the basics of leather mask-making (Saturday at 7pm during the con).  I thought it would be a good exercise to share my tentative to-do list for this year's con just to give everyone an idea of the hecticness.

To get that nice aged metal look on a leather mask, I use my finger to dab paint onto the surface.  Because my finger is soft and has some give, it makes soft transitions and also when dabbing lightly it only affects the raised surfaces of the masks, which is what you want if you're going for a patina feel.

Well, it seems my crafting list here consists of about 90% of my journal, these days!  I've been so backed up with other work lately that my other hobbies besides painting and drawing have been completely ignored.

On the bright side, I've got plenty of ideas waiting in the wings, an entire square of leather waiting to be shaped to my will, and a bunch of paints from clearance just begging to be used.  If I CAN get the free time, who knows what might pop out!

Hello all! You've probably already noticed this, but I'm slowly transferring all of my photos of my sculptures from my :devladydove7-photos: account to this one.  Please excuse these old deviations, though I hope they will be an enjoyable blast from the past!
