Hi everyone - I'm still alive! And feeling terribly guilty about allowing my gallery here at dA to fall into disarray. Were it a building, there'd be trees sprouting through the roof by now.

Fortunately it's not a building, just a website, which means that I came back to find it redesigned and newer and shinier than ever (sadly, it's so new and shiny I can't figure out where anything is... how the hell do I change the auto signature on my comments again??).

In brief: I'm still in Brisbane, I'm still with ~IncB, I'm still a crazy cat lady, and I'm still producing art - though because I'm working in the gaming industry, I'm not permitted to upload any of the designs I do for work here. And because I'm being paid to draw and paint for 38 hours a week, every week, I tend to do anything BUT draw and paint in my free time. This is pretty sweet for me, but not much fun for anyone watching my gallery and hoping for something new. Very sad, actually - I've taken on a more realistic painting style that I'd love to show you guys, but it's all on stuff I've done for work! D:

Still, there's some silly sketches and such I've done in my free time here at work that I'll pop up here soonish.

Also, to lay this to rest once and for all, because people keep asking: ~blitterbug and I will not be releasing any further issues of Crikey Duck. I'm really sorry guys, but that was a co-project the two of us did together in our free time when we were flatmates. We both have a lot less free time these days, we no longer live together, and each of us has personal projects we're keen to invest our time and energy into. Crikey Duck was awesome fun while it lasted, but it is over. We're so glad you all enjoyed it. <3

Currently there's nothing much else to say - life has been exceedingly good to me this past year and the future is looking pretty damn nifty-keen too. ~IncB and I will be making our way to the US for a month-long holiday in early 2010. I'm writing in my free time. The cats are well. And how are all of you?

~Tania

www.taniawalker.com

A quick and apologetic update from me - if you've sent me a DD suggestion recently, and I haven't read it, please forgive me: after a recent stuffup from our ISP, we've ended up on Dialup until the 3rd of November.

Until then, loading pages on dA is near-impossible to do with any sort of efficiency, so I'm sitting on a lot of notes right now, saving them for later.

As always, if you have questions or issues, I'll continue to address those right away. (I've been asked some really interesting, challenging questions lately, actually - those are great fun, keep them coming!)
Thanks guys;

Just briefly: I'm looking for someone local (Brisbane) looking to share professional office space. You'd get an office room to yourself plus shared use of the reception area, kitchen, and the building's shared facilities. My business would cover electricity but you'd have to have your own phone connected.

Would suit someone in the creative industries or personal services, ie photography, accounting, web / graphic design, etc.

Office is located on Wickham Terrace in Spring Hill, about a minute's walk from Central Station.

Price would be $175 / week negotiable. If you're interested, please Note me.

Community Outreach
Recently in an AR update ^guruubii posted "project un-named". The Plan: To start a Community Communications Web for deviantART.

We Gallery Directors do our best to create and share as much information as we can. We try to guide people down the right paths here on dA, but sometimes our reach falls a little short. Artists Relations is constantly buzzing with activity. We are always looking for ways to better serve this massive community and sometimes we fall, sometimes we hit a home run, and sometimes - we just don't see you at all. Some of the communities within this community are small, but they are as important as the whole community. We need a connection point. That connection point is you - the community.

The Goal

The Gallery Directors role is to create a link between you and the administration.

With the New Gallery Directors being part of the team for only a year at a time now, its important to create some concrete connections within the community so when new Gallery Directors join, there isn't wasted time building connections or finding those loose threads. Most every community/ sub-community on this huge and complex site have key members. These key members are really active, very educated and highly prominent artists. They are out there. We know of some of them. They are invaluable to the Gallery Directors to keep us informed of anything going on. Project: Community Outreach is meant to expand on that. make it more official, make it function and make it benefit the community.

Your Role

We need you to get this going. Anyone can volunteer, and hopefully the prominent members of the community will participate. That doesn't mean lots you need a lot of page views, it means someone who knows their art, is knowledgeable, honest, and understands the categories of DA and most importantly - has the communities interests in mind! While this is not an official AR position, it will serve to be an important part of AR. You as a deviant ideally would be around to keep the Director of their particular gallery updated on any issues, complaints and praise from their sub communities. The idea being to extinguish the spark before it becomes a conflagration. These problems could be as simple as saying "Hey, GD this little subcategory is overflowing with miscats" or "Hey, we could use a contest for our type of art" or something as grand as a torrent of journals all angry about administrative action, that is threatening to get out of control. So you would be essential for 'Damage Control' Help us get to the trouble spots and make things right so no one has to deal with the stress or hurt feelings. Please keep in mind though, Gallery Directors do not deal directly with policy, theft, copyright. GDs deal only with the cleaning and maintaining of the galleries, and the communities. Please report violations the normal way, using the Report Policy Violation link located under the favorites counter on each deviation.

We would also like that you be talent scouts for the community. Help us by finding the really exceptional artists and bring them to our attention, especially the unknown ones.

Keep The AR team / the Gallery Director informed on the issues or praise within the sub communities

Keep up to date with news and policies

Spread education not rumors.

Help keep the community updated to news and changes within the gallery

Reporting miscatagorized deviations and alerting the Gallery Directors to problem/unattended areas

Anyone can do these things of course, we encourage it, but stand out! Show us that you can be relied on for the GD's! Be someone we as Gallery Directors can go to and ask "How is everything?" and get a solid informed answer. You build up your reputation by being an active and integral part of the community. The best way to become part of this project is to build up a good reputation with your GD.

A special note for my Fan Art homies (as you may have noticed that the above is a form-letter of sorts!): There are already some of you who do some of the above in an unofficial capacity. You are the ones checking galleries and reporting Miscats. You're the ones Noting me when you see something going wrong that I've missed. You're the ones who see a question asked in comments and are there with a ready answer and a link to the FAQ long before an admin ever sees it.

It's guys and gals like you who should be volunteering for this. You're already doing the work. Why not step up and be recognised for it?

Introduction

For the past 5 years our very own $Moonbeam13 has been involved in supporting and raising money for The Weekend To End Breast Cancer event in Toronto.

She has done this in a fairly quiet and discreet way so we felt it was time to shed a bit more light on what exactly she does for this great cause.

To give a bit of background, in the past 4 years this organization has raised over 60 million dollars in donations and through this has made some landmark strides in advancing the research on breast cancer, which claims the lives of close to 50,000 women a year and about a quarter million women diagnosed per year.
This money does make a big difference in helping with in depth gene studies and creating specialized programs for people diagnosed with the disease.

The Weekend To End Breast Cancer takes place all across Canada. In Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, and $Moonbeam13's hometown of Toronto, where for the last 4 years and soon to be 5, she has participated in the 60k walk. That’s 37.28 miles to you Americans.
To participate in the walk, each person must raise $2000 to qualify and that is no easy task in and of itself. As of right now she has raised about 2600 dollars but we think she can do much better than that with the help of a community of 5 million strong!

This year the event takes place September 8th and 9th, so time to help is limited.

So how can can you help? Read on!

Alternately you can donate direct to the organization here.

Other Ways To Show Support Dye your hair pink, wear something pink or do a piece of art in pink and upload it to your gallery and link back here so we can spread the word to as many people as possible!

And feel free to come join us Saturday September 8th at noon PST on dAmn in #FightLikeaGirl for games and events of a pinktastic nature!

Also, if you are in the Toronto area and wish to cheer the walkers on in person you can check out this this flyer here for a list of the Cheering Stations!
So, now it is up to you to go out there and help support your mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, nieces and girlfriends in the best way possible!

Fan Art: General News

It's been a quiet couple of weeks for Fan Art since dA's 7th. We've had the usual minor dramas but no big events. I blame myself. Y'see, your friendly neighborhood GD's small business has just hit a period of prosperity, I'm in the process of buying a block of land, a flatmate moved out of our share house, and all in all it's been crrrrazy around here!

So to spice things up a bit, let's have some cross-promotion! If you're running a fan art contest or event, or you know someone who's running a fan art contest or event, comment with the details and I'll feature you in the next AR News.

Complaining 101

On a community this enormous, stuff goes wrong. It doesn't go wrong as much as you'd think, considering the sheer number of people active in the community, but yes, it definitely goes wrong now and then.

Generally if one of us GDs makes a mistake, we hurry to fix it as best we can. Mistakes I've made and/or seen made by others over the past couple of months include, but are not limited to:

- DDing a possible paintover (me; Jury is still out on this one)
- Accidentally mentioning a spoiler in a DD description (me again)
- An admin moving a Harry Potter piece from "Books" to "Movies"
- Two admins DDing the same piece
- Two admins DDing the same artist on the same day
- An admin accidentally posting two DDs in one day (me and a couple of others)
- An admin accidentally giving a DD to someone who already had the unofficial maximum of three
- Admins forgetting to supply an explanation when deleting / moving an artwork

These things happen. What amazes me is how shocked people get when they do. Guys, you have to expect mistakes to happen; this gallery is being run by human beings (though if it were run purely by software, my bet is there'd be even more mistakes, and they'd be worse).

So if something like the above happens to you or one of your friends, you have every right to complain. But don't be shocked. Be logical. Be calm. Chances are, someone made a mistake, and all you need to do is bring that to the attention of the admins to get it either sorted out, or at least receive an explanation.

When you find yourself the victim of Human Error, you have a couple of options:

OPTION ONE:

1. Note the admin in question or contact the Help Desk (always a good bet) to get it sorted out.

OPTION TWO:

1. Foam at the mouth
2. Write ranty journal entries about the incident
3. After doing all that, eventually get around to lodging a complaint in a place where an admin will actually see it
4. Write another ranty journal entry about how dA is "going downhill" because it's taking too long for your issue to be solved...
5. Repeat ad nauseum

I can tell you from experience which approach will get you results, but the choice is yours.

DDs Past (General Picks)

Fan Art: General News

It's been a busy couple of weeks for dA! The community is another year older and wiser; small controversies rage as always, DD's are chosen, the GDs are settling in, and in the slightly-modified words of J K Rowling, "All is well."

Birthday Contest

Fan Art had a small but enjoyable part to play in the celebration of dA's distinguised seventh birthday celebrations. I ran a speed-contest, with the promise of one-month subs as prizes to the first ten people to submit their entries. Ultimately we had twenty entries and I made sure they ALL got those subs; half of those people participated purely for fun and community spirit without the promise of a reward... which, I think, is worth rewarding!

You can see a catalog of Fan Art's illustrated (and written!) birthday cards to dA here.

DD Controversy

We've had a great run of fantastic DD's so far, but recently there was controversy over a detailed airbrushed piece I selected for DD. Initially it came out that the piece was photo-referenced and the artist hadn't mentioned that.

Guys, nobody has a problem with you using photo-ref, but I URGE you to credit and link to the original photo if you do so! People are not going to think any less of you for using photo reference. However, they WILL think less of you if you use it, fib about it, and then get caught.

Further controversy arose when it was suggested that the selected image might be a paint-over - the airbrushing equivalent of tracing. If the piece is a ripoff it will be dealt with accordingly; we have a system for that. The jury isn't in about this yet, and I'm not going to link to the piece here - there's already too many people spamming the artist as it is.

THAT'S what I want to talk about here. If you see something (DD'd or not) and you doubt the veracity of the piece, spamming the artist is a waste of your time. Simply gather your evidence, click the 'Report' button beside the piece, and report it as a Copyright Infringement. It may take the review team a couple of weeks to get to it, but I assure you they will.

Now, you're welcome to spend hours or days sitting on the artist's page spamming or calling them out, but ultimately it's your time you're wasting, it's making you look silly, and if you take it too far you run the risk of stepping over the line into harassment.

So remember, guys: if you see a problem, be constructive.

DD Notes

A quick note here - I haven't been personally answering every DD suggestion note I'm getting, and it sometimes takes me a couple of days to cut through my backlog so I can read them all - but please be assured that I AM reading them all, and as many of you have noticed, I'm choosing all my DDs from your suggestions. So please keep them coming! Your suggestions are all immensely helpful and I'm constantly amazed at the gems you guys unearth here in Fan Art.

Speaking of DD's, you'll notice that there isn't one for Fan Art today: I fell one day behind and when I realised, the 13th had already begun. I for one would rather see a DD featured for a whole day rather than a part day, so in this case I'm letting it go. I'll make up for it tomorrow with a real doozy...

A Word on Underage Fan Art

...well, a few words, really.

THE SITUATION: dA recently clarified the written explanation of their policy concerning depiction of underaged characters in sexual situations. Whilst the policy itself has never changed, the explanation did, and many people took this to mean that dA was having a sudden crack-down on art depicting younger characters in dodgy situations.

FANDOM'S RESPONSE: ...and there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

A few people have emailed me and Noted me since the $realitysquared journals that triggered all the fuss, and I've spent a week or so turning things over in my head.

Here is where I stand:

Let me start by saying that I'm on your side: I don't have a personal issue with slightly-under-18 characters kissing, hugging, holding hands or even doing the horizontal mambo; goodness knows most real-life 17-year-olds are doing so. Depictions of aged-up Ron and Harry doing the deed don't phase me; and if people are interested in Snape/Hermione, more power to 'em! After all, it's not real.

HOWEVER, me being okay with that kind of art or fiction, and dA being able to freely allow it on it's servers, are two different matters.

Generally speaking, we (as in dA) would prefer deviants to err on the side of caution when dealing with images like this. If you feel there's a chance the image might be deleted, don't upload it in the first place. There are plenty of online galleries that encourage work of a more adult nature (with broader boundaries as far as subject matter is concerned) where artwork like that can be uploaded for an audience who have gone to that site knowing that that's what they'll see there.

But dA has a very, very broad range of people to appeal to. Some are very young. Some are very religious. Some are very freethinking. So whilst you don't get to upload sexualised pics of slightly-underaged or aged-up characters, you'll also find that neo-Nazis can't diss other races on here, that hardcore bible-thumpers can't upload deviations telling gays they're all going to hell, and that twisted assholes can't upload photos of the kitten they gutted either.

These guidelines can be a pain sometimes, but they help us, I suspect, far more than they hinder us.

Now, I know it's upsetting when your fun fandom piece of two pretty-much-legal-anyway characters gets targeted by a rule designed to target paedophiles. You're going to have to take my word for it on this: dA is NOT trying to lump you into the same basket as those people. You're absolutely right, there is a MASSIVE difference between child porn and a picture of two seventeen-year-old fictional characters getting it on.

The problem is that there's no black and white here; there's no clear line where an image switches from "a bit of fandom fun" to "child porn". People keep asking us to set down more detailed guidelines. Is it okay to show a sixteen-year-old girl with cleavage wearing a bikini? Is it okay if that bikini is the g-string type? What if it's translucent? Okay, then what if it's a peephole bra? And what if she's just a year younger?

Follow that road long enough and you've got twelve-year-old cartoon fairies doing spreads at the camera. Don't believe me? I reported a piece just like that two weeks ago.

The problem is, we can't keep clarifying these guidelines in more and more exhaustive detail or we'll wind up with a legal-textbook-sized set of rules for dA that nobody will ever read! We'd begin defining it down to ridiculous details like whether depictions of a teenage girl in panties were okay if the panties were cotton as opposed to see-through lace. The amount of haggling over tiny details of allowability in this area is infinite, and it's a road dA doesn't have the resources or inclination to go down - simply because we trust our artists to be wise enough to self-govern.

A lovely fanartist Noted me today with her concerns, and ended her note with: "I will not, at least for DA based comissions, do any sort of above PG rating fanart of underage characters, and continue to post anything I am unsure of on other sites." That's exactly the kind of reasonable, mature, levelheaded attitude we're hoping to see from Fan Artists here on dA.

I know it's tough not to be able to upload all your artwork in the one place - believe me, I know personally; I've got artwork elsewhere on the web that dA wouldn't touch with a forty-foot pole! (Don't go looking now, kids.)

Some years ago, before this whole GD thing, I got into an altercation with dA in which a shmexay pic of mine was deleted for reasons I felt were unfair (like many of your recent pics, it was teetering on the boundaries of allowable content). Boy, was I ever pissed! I mean, t...

My brother and I run a jewellery design business. Generally we do work for others, but we've just released our first range of pendants. In solid .925 silver, the "Symbology" range puts a new twist on an old idea.

We reckon they're pretty snazzy. We figure that geekiness can still be stylish, and to that end, I like to call our design ethos "Geek Chic".
These attention-getting pendants are all available for purchase and they make great gifts for others, or an awesome treat for yourself. Click on the thumbnails above for more information!
You know, I really expected you guys to be a bit of an unruly mob - I've seen what happens WHEN FANDOM ATTACKS - but so far you've been peculiarly well-behaved... which makes me wonder...

...You're PLANNING something, aren't you? I swear, if I get up tomorrow morning and find my userpage egged and toilet-papered, I'm coming after you all.

What IS Fan Art?

Art of any copyrighted character, or of an original character who lives in a copyrighted world, is Fan Art.

There's been some confusion over this, so to clarify, here are a few examples in the incredibly dorky Q&A style of Australian government-sponsored TV ads.

Q: "I am a professional comics artist and I want to upload my pencils / cover art / colour job of Batman up here. But I got paid to do this! So it's not FAN ART, is it?"

A: Yes. It's fan art. I know you got paid, but you're still drawing a character who belongs to someone else.

Explanation: Now, before you get upset over your art being 'degraded' by being placed in Fan Art, keep in mind that if someone is looking for some awesome Batman arts, the first place they're going to look is in Fan Art. If you want yours to be recognised as The Most Awesome (and they're paying you, so it probably is!), then Fan Art is where you want it to be. Give your fans a chance to find you.

Q: "I drew this gorgeous charcoal image of Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow. But I really did it to draw the actor (not because he's hot as a pirate - honest!). It's Art, not Fan Art! Right?"

A: Wrong! Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow is Fan Art. Heck, Johnny Depp as Johnny Depp is Fan Art.

Explanation: Sorry ladies, Johnny Depp is not (c) to you in ANY form. You may have drawn the most sensitive and spot-on portrait in the world, but if it's of a character or a famous actor, it's Fan Art, not Portraits. Cry not your tears! If you're a Serious Portrait Artist who loathes the thought of having a piece of work in Fan Art, take heart: that one piece could bring a whole new audience into the REST of your gallery, an audience who wouldn't have found you otherwise.

And if you REALLY loathe it, you can always rethink your policy on drawing incredibly popular mainstream movie stars.

Q: "My character is ORIGINAL! Sure, he hangs out with Sonic / is dating Gadget / kicked Starscream's ass, but I made him up completely! So that's not fan art, is it?"

A: Yep. Fan Art. Your character exists in a copyrighted world.

Explanation: There may be some debate over this one, but here is the sand, and here is the line we've drawn in it. Now, you can bend and twist and change a copyrighted world all you want, and eventually you might change it so much that none of the copyrighted characters remain in your story and the world is renamed, unrecognisable and completely different. In THAT case, you got yourself an Original Story, and I'm sure many great ones have started just like that. In the meantime, though, if your character lives in a copyrighted world or has a relationship with a copyrighted character - in other words, if yours is a derivative work (read: if you'd be sued for trying to make money off the art and stories you're doing now), that's definitely Fan Art.

Please feel free to pepper me with questions - I'm sure there's heaps of other valid examples I could include.

Also, some of you might want to throw rocks at me over this, but before you start, you should know that this isn't just me throwing my weight around - these guidelines were reached in tandem with the GDs of 'Cartoons & Comics', who face torrents of miscategorised Fan Art on a daily basis, and with the approval of $Moonbeam13. So you'd better make sure you've got plenty of rocks and a good throwing arm.

Remember, 'derivative work' is not an insult. It's your way of complimenting someone else's work; your way of supporting something that makes you happy. Bless you for being open enough to do that, and bugger all the re...

Welcome

Hi guys, and welcome to the first Artist Relations newsletter for the Fan Art Gallery! It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks! So what's been happening? Read on...

AR News

The divine and high-heeled $lolly has recently made a post concerning the future of DeviantArt, I suggest you all check it out!

Community Development Update

New Fan Art Gallery Director

That'd be me. If you're curious you can read up on me on my own page, but here's the basics: I'm from Brissie, I'm 26, female, used to work for Walt Disney Animation Australia and I'm darn happy to be here as your Gallery Director.

What is Fan Art?

Seems like an obvious question, but you'd be amazed how many fan art images are put into the wrong category here at DA. As a rule of thumb, if you're creating art of a character who is copyrighted to someone else, that's fan art. Doesn't matter whether it's painted, drawn or photo-manniped; if it's a copyrighted character it's DEFINITELY Fan Art.

That includes pictures of Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, guys.

Miscats

This leads me on to 'Miscats', or Mis-categorisations. A Miscat occurs when an image is uploaded to the wrong gallery. Image classification may not seem important but you'll find if your image is in the correct category, more people will see it and you'll get more of those sweet, juicy faves and comments. Match the right image with the right audience!

So if there's any Fan Art in your own gallery that isn't classified under Fan Art, it'd be awesome if you could shift it over yourself and save the AR team the trouble! If you'vw got the time and inclination to help out even more, try this: run a search on DA for your favourite fan character. Under the thumbnails on the search results page you'll see the name of the gallery each picture is filed in. If you see any pictures filed under the wrong gallery, click on that image, click the 'Report Policy Violation' link, and from the drop-down list select 'Misplacement'.

By something as simple as filing that report you'll be helping tidy up the messy galleries of DA and contributing something very real to the community, and I'll bloody well love ya for it.

Daily Deviations

When I took up this post I had no idea how much fun I'd have with Daily Deviations. It truly is a pleasure to give them, and to check back later to see the much-deserved rush of attention the chosen image receives. And I'm receiving some simply amazing suggestions! Please keep them coming!

Guidelines for DD suggestions can be found on my previous News update: Fan Art: The Year Ahead.

One request, guys: Please include a THUMBNAIL in your DD suggestion note. It makes it so much easier for me to go back and check who recommended which piece at a glance. The more time you can free up for me, the more I can do for this community. Which leads me to...

Official Contests

There's a big contest brewing for the Fan Art gallery, but I'm still getting my cr*p together, so please forgive me - it's going to be another week or so before I can post a definite update on The Big One!

In the meantime, I'm running mini-competitions of a sort in the form of week-long Daily Deviation themes. Commemorating special events in fandom, a themed week simply means that for each day of a given week, the DDs will all be chosen from the same fandom.

DD CHALLENGE: Potter Week: Keep your eyes peeled for Potter Week, which starts on the 16th and finishes on the 22nd, celebrating the release of the seventh and final Harry Potter book on July 21st. The rush of suggestions I've received for this has been absolutely incredible and I'm spoiled for choice: for every Potter DD chosen in the coming week, an equally deserving one had to miss out.

DD CHALLENGE: Simpsons Week This starts on July 23rd and ends on the 29th. Celebrating the release of the first-ever feature-length Simpsons film on the 27th, I'm opening suggestions.... NNNNNNOW! If you know of a fantastic Simpsons artwork that deserves DD, send me a note titled "Simpsons DD" and share the goodness.
Just a quick request tonight - I'm writing the first ever Fan Art Newsletter for Artist Relations, and I'll be posting it within the next 24 hours. This is a big opportunity for any of you out there who are currently planning or running a CONTEST or EVENT that falls under the Fan Art heading.

Send me the details of your Cunning Plans via Note and I'll include them in the Newsletter, which will be seen all over dA. As you know (as the entire world knows!), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows lands in bookstores worldwide on the 21st of July.

In celebration of the seventh and final book in J. K. Rowling's fantastic series, every single Daily Deviation from Monday the 16th through to Sunday the 22nd will be selected from the fine body of Harry Potter fan art here on DA.

So if you know of an amazing piece of HP art, old or new, please send me your recommendations via Note ASAP.

I'm not posting this to News because I don't want to spam the entirety of DA, but if all you HP fans can spread the word for me (and I know you can; you're like a human Floo network) I'm sure I'll be buried under Notes before you can say "Expelliarmus!"

Seriously, though - hi. I'm your new Gallery Director for Fan Art. Thanks to $Moonbeam13 for giving me this opportunity.

The following few paragraphs contain Awkward Introductions, so please feel free to skim.

My name is Tania Walker, and I hail from the Land Downunder. I'm 25, enjoy taking Jumping Photos (see my Dev ID for an example) and currently work from home running a jewellery design service with my brother, ~Nodstad. This means I spend about ten hours a day working in front of this bloody computer, so I won't be hard to reach.

That said, please don't ask me any difficult questions for the next 24 hours or so, because frankly I've got no idea what I'm doing yet. I'm sure that gives you all a great deal of confidence.

I can be reached via comments on my page, by Note, or by email at animator@deviantart.com.

I've been Devving it up since 2002 and can be found in person at most *brisvegas DevMeets. Despite the amount of time I've spent on this website I'm yet to master some of the bells and whistles... I'm frankly embarrassed by my inability to work out CSS for this journal. It's so NAKED!

Before I ran my own business, I was an animator - hence the obvious username. I worked for a few different places, most notably Walt Disney Animation Australia as an Inbetweener on 'The Lion King 3' and 'The Three Musketeers', and Liquid Animation on 'The Proud Family'. I've also spent some time freelancing for various corporate and private clients.

However, I started out ten years ago drawing fan art for Disney films. Fan art got me started down the path that led to my life's dream: to actually be a part of creating the films I loved.

Now, I've heard people claim that there's no place for fan art on DA. I disagree. A huge number of talented artists here on DA got their start drawing fan art, and many of them never stopped: you'll find dozens of professionals in here who still draw Bugs Bunny or the Ghostbusters or Severus Snape whenever they get the chance. I don't think there's any better way to express your fascination with an idea than by incorporating it into your art.

So keep on creating, guys! I'll just be back here fiddling with these knobs and buttons and working out some awesomely fun contests and things...

PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE GIRL BEHIND THE CURTAIN!

Hi all;

One of the things I like about DA is that when I want something fresh for my WatchList, I don't need to go too far. Yesterday, as an experiment, I went to a random userpage and right-clicked open every usericon I could find on that page under 'Friends' and 'Comments'.

And of the couple-dozen of pages I opened, I found not one but THREE awesome artists, all of who deserve more recognition than they're getting. Actually, I found more than three, but these ones really stood out.

Sweeping, detailed, flowing and intense. Subject matters include comic book heroes and fantasy figures.
Nothing shows an artist's ability as much as a broad range of styles. This gallery is a delight - a mix of intensely toony characters with delicate anime-styled characters and everything inbetween. Kudos to Sanaril for not going batty doing the image posted below:

'Ullo! As you may have seen I've put up another couple of pieces today. These are the semi-stillborn results of two of the three Dud Clients I've had over the past year.

Freelancing on the whole is awesome fun but now and then you get a client who makes you tear your hair out in frustrated rage. I'm happy to say they're few and far between. And they make for entertaining stories on DA. If you're planning on going into freelancing yourself, some of my past tales of woe should teach you a thing or two about what NOT to do!

Also, we just watched the second-last Supernatural S2 episode. OMG! Sam! T_T

Finally, my computer has developed such a "personality" (read: stuff that don't work right) I now have a (human-cooling) fan leaning against the open case all day long so it doesn't overheat. It's quite amazing to be sitting there, fingers and toes numb from winter cold, listening to the computer heat alarm scream. The best part is that every time that intensely irritating alarm goes off, my brother accompanies it with a Chewbacca-scream.

And with that thought, I bid you goodnight.

ANYWAY. I'm selling a couple of ex-Disney animation desks complete with 16-field discs. Photos and details are here:

[link]

This is only really applicable to Australians, as the postage to get something like this over to the US would be prohibitive. But if you're an Aussie and you want a good drawing or animation desk, look no further than these; they're pretty damn sweet.

I haven't been around here for a while - first a move, then I was very busy with work (I'm getting more freelance work than I need now; it's crazy!) and then generic stress all kept me away. I'm good though; things have really picked up this past week! I might even find the time to upload some of the art I've been doing soon.

But that's not the point of this post!

My brother Chris is selling his 1998 Holden Commodore VT. I offered to list it on Ebay for him. If you're local, and interested in buying a car, check it out:

[link] LCA:AU:11

There is a reserve, but it's not as high as you'd think, judging by the pricing of the other 98 Commodore VTs on Ebay.

Ciao;

On Saturday, Hammond and I went and chilled out with the lovely Malena in Paddington all day. We went to the cat-themed store Pussies Galore, and I met the owner, Angie, and the gorgeous crop of kittens they're currently working on finding homes for (the store participates in a big cat rescue and rehome scheme), and we went and had THE best iced chocolate I've ever had, and we shopped in Op Shops and got FREE PIES! I had a Ratatoille pie, that was an interesting experience. It was the best day I've had in ages!

I'm thinking of helping out in a couple of ways with the kitten-rescuing, but that's a story for another entry, and for after we've inspected our possible-future-home tomorrow.

So it was Saturday night, Hammond and I came home and he talked me into watching some Grey's Anatomy with him. I was bumming around in my tracksuit pants and a random shirt and basically just passing time waiting for Sunday to roll around, because Joe was scheduled to get back on Sunday night and it was SO CLOSE FINALLY.

Hammond kept getting and sending texts, and I figured he was chatting to Adders. Then at one point Hammond grabbed his car keys and disappeared to 'go pick up Adders from work'. He arrived back home alone some time later to my surprise, and told me that Adders wasn't coming over tonight, and I'm not really sure why I didn't question that further...

Some time later I went upstairs to call my mother, and there was a knock at the door. Still on the phone, I crouched on the floor to restrain the cats (figuring it could be someone scary and important) while Hammond answered the door.

AND JOEY WALKED IN. IN A GORGEOUS SUIT. WITH A BOX OF CHOCOLATES. GRINNING. asdhjkgldfkhsadf;;;

I said "Oh my god, mum, I've got to go, don'tworryit'sgood!", hung up, and flew into a hug.

Hammond quietly disappeared over to Adders' place sometime shortly after and, yeah, this all goes to show how impossibly gullible I can be.

Also, the dudes down at the corner store must be starting to think we lot up here are REALLY weird. We frequently walk in giggling and being dorks and buy nothing but snacks. Another time Joey turned up to the counter with three round green things (a kiwifruit, a drink that comes in a round, green bottle, and something else which I've forgotten) and when he realised, he started laughing, to the bewilderment of the store employee serving him.

This time around, Joey and I turned up. He was dressed in a three-piece suit (vest, tie, shiny shoes and all). I was dressed in tracksuit pants, a t-shirt and bare feet. We wandered the store arm in arm. I think they're used to us down there now because nobody looked twice.

Life is really, really good.

Hi guys! I've just recently set foot in the strange and wonderful world of PSP tubing. Well, I don't do it myself, but I'm licensing some brand-new, never-before-seen art out to anyone who wants to make use of it online.

For US$20, you can sign up to a year-long package of original tubes from me. The initial release, which is already on the community, is five tubes. There'll be a new tube each fortnight for the next year. Through the community I'll be running contests and taking requests, so if tubing is your thing and you like my art, please sign up!

How, What and Where:

I am currently offering a PSP package for sig tag makers. A lifetime license for this package is available for $20. Examples of the tubes available are in my portfolio.

For PSP users and group managers who are interested in obtaining a license to use my work there is a three-step process:

1. PayPal payment of $20 must be made to info@taniawalker.com.

2. Forward your PayPal confirmation to tania@stamporanium.com. Once funds are verified your license information will be e-mailed to you.

3. Once you receive your e-mail with your license information, you MUST join The Official Tania Walker License Forum ([link]) in order to obtain your tubes. You will not be able to join the forum until you receive your license information as your license number must be on your forum application.

All information regarding licensing will be available in the forum including my Terms Of Use.

Join the Official Tania Walker License Forum: [link]

On a completely different topic, I'm currently offering the following print for sale:

I have just started to get involved in this whole prints thing. Prints are something I've never done before, and I'm going to trial them for a year to see how they go. If the print account I've got is cost-effective I'll continue to offer them; if not, I'll retire them.

The first available print is the lovely Zakiya of Crikey Duck fame (www.crikeyduck.com) looking smexay in a corset. And hey, look, it's totally white! Which makes this a totally awesome Christmas present! ...okay, I'm reaching.

Life is good. I'm sorry if I worried anyone with the previous entry; for a while I really was that bad. But things worked out, as things often do, and I couldn't be happier right now. It took me a while to update this because I felt sort of sheepish about worrying everyone, really, and I wanted to be absolutely sure that everything was going to be okay, and stay okay, before I went around telling people it was.

Now I'm sure, so here I am.

I'm currently working on the next issue of Crikey Duck. It was a quarter-done back when my life exploded in my face, and there was over a two-month gap between when I left it off and when I started it up again. I'm a little rusty. XP

But it's coming back. So please, continue to watch the Crikey Duck page (add it to your LJ watch list at [link]/info) secure in the knowlege that the story isn't over yet. It's only just begun.

I'll leave this off with a poem I found recently. It was printed on a wall hanging, which I bought because it seemed so appropriate.

Love one another,
but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea
between the shores of your souls.

Sing and dance together and be joyous,
But let each of you be alone,
as the strings of a lute are alone
though they quiver with the same music.

Stand together yet not too near together.
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress
grow not in each other's shadow.

- Kahlil Gibran.

Sorry, but I don't know when I'll be back with anything new or useful to offer. I don't even know if I'm still me.
Thank you for continuing to watch and wait. I promise you I'll do something amazing sooner or later - I always do. *blows own horn madly* In the meantime I have to disengage from all this for a while... there's nothing left of me to go around anymore.

Oddly enough, the vote counter doesn't seem to have reset for December, which is a shame - the longer it goes without resetting, the harder it is to climb the ladder. I'm happy to say we reached #7 on the list last time - when the counter resets, perhaps we can even beat that. (Until then, based on the figures, it looks like we're set to be #23 for a looong time).

There'll be a Crikey Duck splash page before Christmas, and then in the new year we'll get started on a new story arc.

Enjoy!
It only takes one click of a button, and there's no advertising on the other side! We're trying to get it to the top 100. When I put up the vote button this morning, Crikey Duck was ranked 694. As of now, it's already down to 353.

Please put in a vote for us!

That reminds me, I'm working on the next issue today - it should be up within the next day or so. ^_^
Life's been hectic lately between Trade Fairs, work and Crikey Duck. I promise I'll upload something soon. Quite a few somethings, hopefully.

Crikey Duck! (A Webbed Comic): [link]

Crikey Duck is updated: [link]

I haven't been too active on Dev lately... as a matter of fact, I haven't been too active on -anything-. Life is kind of exhausting right now. Please know I haven't forgotten about anything I'm working on, I haven't forgotten about art, and I haven't forgotten about friends. I'm still around.

*hugs to all*

Crikey Duck (www.crikeyduck.com) is updated again. Issue 9, "Booty and the Beast", has landed. After the broad humor of the last one, we went for something a little more dry and subtle here.

Also, the first two highly awesome (and amusing) "Color Me Kiya"s have turned up.
