What happened this two weeks:

I got a B+ for Craft of Writing assignment ( : / I rewrote my piece like 4 times? … )

I got a A- for Indian Art exam paper. ( Studied like only 2 nights before. Ha.)

I got 20/25 for History of Graphic Design pop quiz. ( Totally didn't study any. XD )

I got to play 358/2 days and finally reached Day 300. (I know, I'm slow. I spent ages reading the Japanese text.)

Nice.

I am aiming for better grades for the final exams ( there isn't any for CoW though. ).

Next week's Graphic Design class is a field trip to Sungei Buloh for the final project.

Next Tuesday is another History of Graphic Design pop quiz again.

Next Thursday is Chinese Art History exam. : ((

Next Friday is the deadline for CoW's Assignment 2. : (((

Exhibition brief and invitation are due on 3 November.

Japanese listening test and oral are on 9 November.

Graphic Design final project presentation is on 11 November.

Italian Music through the Ages concert is on 15 November. I still haven't designed the layout for the program notes. Oh dear.

For cosplay, Namine's drawings have stagnated again. -__- But I found a better working method: spend approx. 15 minutes on a drawing everyday. The thing is: I spent this week on a drawing in the wrong colour scheme. >: ( Will try to do a new one in a correct colour and finish one more simpler drawing by this weekend since Monday is a school holiday (because of Deepavali). Seriously, I should get the sandals done too. All they need are just stars!!! -____-

Then after the examinations, I will continue work on the Kingdom Key for Roxas. The parts are cut out already. I just need to either cut/sand flat surfaces into round surfaces; or glue them together with some miracle superglue. Then paint. -__________-

Well, I did had the intention to load up more stuff this week since I was on a week break from work. And no, my week got ruined. Read here if you want to know.

EOY 2009

Side note: EOY (AKA End of Year event ) is one of the two long standing Singapore's cosplay conventions that see artists and fan artists set up booths to sell their work. The other one is Cosfest. I have seen newer events these few years for more options like SOY (AKA Start of Year event ), STGCC (SIngapore Toys Games Comics Convention ) and AFA (Anime Festival Asia ).

The price to rent a booth at EOY is out: it's $45. O.O A lot more expensive than previous years. I know there's a change in venue and time, but $45 for a booth? Even artwork booth ( for display only) is $20!!!! I wonder whether booths at overseas CONs are so high. If the price is for people selling anime and manga, I guess it's all right. But for unknown art doodlers like me, it's a risky investment. Sure, you will get exposure, but at the end of the day, the earnings might not cover the rent and printing cost. sylenthermit09 and I are discussing whether to go ahead with our plans or we should wait for the SOY event.

Meanwhile, dear watchers, do you think we should go for it? Given my gallery of manga works ( I don't think we can sell photographic works) ? I've been told people would buy coloured prints but I was thinking that with black and white prints, we could sell them cheaper and more people could afford to buy them.

New School Year

Well, I have started a new school year. And I'm working too.

So I'm a full time student AND employee.

Wow.

This means less time for me to draw, surf net, do homework and go to the library.

This means I can save more money to pay for the Tuition loan in the future.

Or spend it on cosplay and making merchandise to sell in local conventions.

'__'

Hm.

This month is a great spending month for me - I have to get a 15" Macbook Pro ( because Vis. Com. students need a decent screen size to do graphics ), a hard disc drive ( for backing up data because the family computer keeps shutting down for no apparent reason, despite reformation and stuff. Needless to say, I wasn't very pleased. And I think I know who's the idiotic user letting in all the viruses/ trojans/ proxies. ), a USB port ( because I always plug a lot of stuff into the PC and Mac only got 2 USB which is not enough. ) and maybe speakers ( because the ones at home died a long time ago and nobody bother to get them.) at the school's IT Fair or the COMEX IT fair during September.

At least my modules seem more interesting this semester. The professors for Typography and Graphic Design are cool. Craft of Writing looks fun. I was just bored by the first lecture of History of Graphic Design since I read about Pictograms, Cruneiforms and Hieroglyphs ( all 3 forms ) about a decade ago in primary school as side interest. I even read about Linear A and B that wasn't covered in the lecture.

The thing is we have to buy a book for that module. And it's not cheap. The module is only for one semester. I don't mind buying for Typography since there are 3 modules, but for one that only going to last a little more than 3 months? : (

I'm going to see whether any seniors are throwing out their books to sell at the school's bazaar.

Hm...... Oh yes.

A bunch of belated birthday wishes to be written here:

Happy Belated Birthday to Deviantart ~ It's a wonderful place to look at inspirational pieces. Though I am still confused whether your B day in on 6/8, 7/8 or 8/8.

Well this is ambiguous. I have seen someone stating Axel's birthday as 8/8 for the sole reason that he's no. VIII in the organisation which I think is plausible, but what about Roxas' birthday? There's only a thirteenth month in Chinese Lunar calendar about twice every 3 years and the month changes every time. This year, there a second 5th Lunar month. In any case, Happy Belated Birthday to you, Axel. Just try to go easy on Roxas, eh? XD But I do find it kinda creepy that this guy shares the same birthday as ......

Best wishes to my home, Singapore. May you continue to perserve and shine through this difficult period.

That's all for now. Sorry for writing such a long entry.

Musing about drawing

I haven't been drawing much of my own stuff, as in stuff that aren't fanart or digital drawing pratice.

And when I spend like 1 hour on a bust drawing with only neck shadows, I know I need to get back to drawing on paper very fast.

Sigh.

When will I ever finish my old stuff if I keep doing new stuff? It's a viscious cycle.

Or I should learn to let go.

There must be some reason why I left some of the unfinished stuff untouched for months or even years.

I couldn't find the urge to finish them, I supposed. Yet I can't bear to let them remain like that.

What a paradox. : /

Musing about photography

I have been editing photographs in PSE since I lost my PS program when reformatting the PC.

Sometimes I wonder how much editing to do. Editing too much seems to miss the point of using the camera. Editing too little seems to belittle the potential in that photograph.

I know you should try to take a photograph as best as you can and minimise editing.

But it's hard.

What you see is one thing and what your camera can capture can be another thing together.

Sometimes I edit the photographs like months after they were taken. By then, I might have fogotten what the original scene looked like and do the editing based on intuition.

Sometimes the photograph gives more zest in another colour scheme.

What I use is only a Nikon Coolpix 5600, the consumer camera and it was bought second hand.

And I'm trying to use it like a photographer's camera. Kinda dumb, huh?

I was drawing at work because I had nothing to do. The two other children saw my stuff and naturally asked what I was drawing. I said I was drawing a Nobody which was true because I was drawing Marluxia. The mother got pulled by her daughter and saw the Akuroku ( I did not explain that they are two guys, not 1 girl and 1 guy; guess who they thought was the girl. ) piece. She asked whether I was in an art school. I said yes because theoretically speaking, ADM is an art school. But we all know that it's more towards design rather art in fine arts sense. So the mother told the children that it's because I'm in an art school that I can draw so well.

People who know me well know that I don't go for art classes. Never had money for that. Barely had enough money to have academic tuition. LOL.

I am what you would term as self taught, though books and sheer practice (okay, for manga. I don't really practice fine art stuff. ) on an almost daily basis. I picked up PS through messing around with it too. Colour pencilling too.

How to shade or colour? I am stumped by such a question. I did it by intuition. I learnt through experience.

My family never encourage me to do art.

In the early days, I did my stuff in secret.

Then I didn't care anymore.

What does me drawing have to do with other people?

Art needs a little talent.

But it needs a hell lot more practice and observation.

Art schools do not mean that you will draw like Michelangelo after attending their classes. Goodness, there will a whole score of them already.

Art is always a continuous learning process.

Disclaimer: I am not shooting at any art schools, Singapore or elsewhere, ok? I just find it a tad irritating when people assume you learn it all in art schools. My experience tells me that this doesn't apply to all people.

I wasn't feeling too happy when I wrote that beacuse all the plans were going haywire, especially for the making of the keyblades.

Luckily, there's alternatives for the KDKs. However, they are the simplest keyblades. The situation on the rest is still a stalemate. > : ( So far, only the keychains can be made.

Sigh.

Wigs have arrived. Now awaiting a wash to clear off the loose fibres and styling. So that's settled. : /

I will finish off the charm now that the varnishing is nearly done. Now at day 73. The soundtrack is very nice. A couple of reasons for that:

- I joined my friend's cosplay team for the EOY event this year and her team is doing Kingdom Hearts 2.
- From my deviations, you should know which character I am doing and why the deviations.
- Unfortunately, I am assigned to do detail spotting and I/C of wigs. =.= So I will be getting intimate details about the hair, weapons and such. I have to do drawings to remember them properly. Yes, Sora's hair is a pain. Give him too much hair and he ends up looking like Taichi from Digimon. :/
- KH: 358/2 days is coming out in Japan next month (). I have every intention to do some related merchandise so that I can feed myself during school term. Yes, uni students are very poor, especially art school students.

__________________________________________________________________

There might be a flood of old deviations since I'm tidying my desktop and backing up my files. Look out for them.

__________________________________________________________________

About the kiriban

I kept forgetting to colour it. I'm sorry. Will quickly colour it one of these days.

__________________________________________________________________

Examinations are over for me. So I'm shifting attention to my cosplay team stuff for this 2 weeks before working.

__________________________________________________________________

I wonder if anyone is interested to commission me? Please drop a note if interested. I don't mind trying some new stuff.

It's now the recess week for me.

Time really flies.

I went to take a Japanese language class for my overload module.

I could actually do illustration my way for 2D class. (and doing another 12 for a calendar assignment...)

I even managed to do my first ever Flash game for 4D.

Just now, I checked the results for the comic competition. I didn't win anything. I wish I could have seen what were the judges' top 5 picks because 2 of the winning entries for the adult categories weren't part of some the judges' choice.

Recess week isn't really a break - there's a USS (Understanding Singapore's Society - the lecturer is cool (according to my classmates) and a real political cynic (my own words).) mid term quiz, 12 illustrations for 2D and cleaning up stuff on desktop.

......

Should I open up commissions?

......

If interested, please note to discuss details.

And before I forget again, I wish to draw a kiriban (in colour) for 5000 pageviews. So if you happen to catch it, screenshot it and send the picture to me. Thanks.

There is a fashion show next Monday, 7.30pm, at SMU's T Junction. Below's their introduction to the event:

SMU Arts Festival 2009 is proud to present its inaugural Fashion Showcase titled "The Clothes are Alive! Fashion is Dead!". Young fashion designers from various design schools will present their unique creations under the concept of Wearable Art.

Their creations will be made using innovative materials to manipulate, alter, distort and react with the environment to give their garments a new façade of life. These creations aim to evoke thought and question traditions, as you, the spectator, watch our very own SMU models strut down the runway to confront Mother Nature itself.

SMU Arts Festival 2009 cordially invites you and your guest to witness this spectacular showcase of creativity and innovation!

____________________________________

My design will be presented along with xxScantyxx's. My design doesn't agree with the writeup though. It's being manipulated by the model herself, not nature. :/

______________________________________________________________________

I only sold 1 at Pameran Poskad 08 and it was totally unexpected. I'm putting the rest up for sale next week.

I have people asking me to update my deviantart. Sorry, I've been trying to do my homework on time so that I can get more sleep. It's real tiring to travel 3 hours to and forth for school. Weekends have become the time for my 4D (phototaking) and Foundation Drawing. I try to get 2D done during the week. 1 more week to break. But I will be using that to do my entry for NUS Graphite 2008 in traditional. Digital is still not my thing.

I purchased a Wacom Bamboo tablet at COMEX 2008. It's the 6 X 9 inches version. However, I haven't been able to figure out how to set the brush to work with the pen pressure. -_-'''''' So it will be a while before digital colouring comes.

Maybe I will load some in class assignments, if there are people interested in seeing. I don't like charcoal because it's very hard to erase or stay on the paper. Charcoal pencils are nowhere better. I still love my pencils. Charcoal is best for smudging and more smudging. I only like the part that it can give blended shadows.

I think I can put one fanart lining up on Friday or Saturday. Nothing fanciful because I went to do the lining of the hair on the train (while being on the seat. I will not do lining STANDING.)

Time to go archery.

I met some new friends (if the term can be used loosely because I still don't really know them well enough). I went on a splurge at Vivocity. I bought my first CD in 5 years and my first ever serial drama (Korean and I haven't seen an episode yet).
Yes, the A Levels is done~

My last paper was on Tuesday.

I went to the library yesterday and threw myself into the books. So far I have finished The Underwood See of The Aldous Lexicon by Michael Lawrence, read a bit on how to write first degree murder (it's a translated work from American writers; I am reading the Chinese version), skimmed through some stories about female Authurian characters and rereading Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince ( for once, I found it on the shelf instead elsewhere).

Right now I am in the midst of packing stuff and rearranging things. When I am done, I will start finishing up unfinished stuff and post them up. I got enough to stuff in one A5 folder with 40 pockets.>,<

....

I think I will put up commission rates next entry. Although I think it's highly unlikely I will get any.

It's been a long time since I wrote here.

My personal journey in art has progressed a lot since last year. I am now more assured of my own abilities and have learnt many stuff.

I have been very confused over my own choice in taking art but I realised that art itself is something that you experience and change along with it. You must learn and then change it to suit your own beliefs. What other people say is of no importance for what they experienced will always be different from your own. I wish I knew it earlier. Then I could have taken a different path.

I am no longer lost about my own plans for my manga. Who cares whatever people say? I am sure I will enjoy it every bit when I start on it full blown after the A levels.

Drawing is my first love together with reading and somehow, any drawing I do can be turned into a full length manga. So I shelved drawing for a while and started writing out some of the scenes. Turned out that my writing skills have become quite rusty.
Lessons are okay. And ridiculous. I can have a whole day of lessons with only 1 lunch break. On this Friday, after the maths lecture and PE, I had 5 hours in between to the next lesson. Isn't that crazy? So I read TRC ( english), finished my Geography homework, had an early lunch, did a bit of maths and taught my friend how to draw manga eyes. In the goddamn cold library.

Did I mention a new student? She's Nurul Ain from Orchid Park Secondary, and loves CCS and TRC a lot. Since our timetable are so similar, so sometimes, I use the breaks in between to teach her. Unlike Maya and Jacinda, she has absolutely no idea on drawing people. So we started from the basics.
