whoa, I just experienced a weird earthquake around 10 minutes ago.
a minor one, but a very rare occurrence in Jakarta.
this one's a bit stronger than the previous ones I've experienced.
(only twice in a lifetime, this one's the third)

its one of those dizzy quakes with wobbling lcd monitors and cabinets,
but not the hollywood-building-crashing-one.

Just watched Transformers a couple of days ago

It's one of the most fun movies I've seen this year.
let the transformer purists and Michael Bay enthusiasts argue all they can,
I love both classic and 'more splosions' Bay's Transformers.
just one tip when you're planning to watch it,
don't sit in the middle-to-front area of the cinema seats,
you'll easily get all queasy if you can't stand all the in-your-face camera shake action scenes.
(long ones too)
plus you'll get to see the bigger picture and overall effects if you sit a bit to the back.
(not all the way back though)

now for a segment on 'life upgrade'
my house just finished it's first week of renovation, with many more weeks to come.
old, decaying, wood doors and windows are being replaced by sturdier and longer-lasting aluminium-frame ones.
wallpapers are picked and ready to be assembled,
and wood floor panels for my room just arrived (yay)

in the technological part on 'life upgrade'
my long overdue major-upgrade on my beloved desktop, Apitos-Machina Mach-3,
has now reached phase-one on collecting upgrade parts.
an Asus P5K-deluxe motherboard and Asus Radeon 2900xt VGA card is now in my possession,
and waiting to be joined together by their future RAM, power supply, and HDD life-partners.

Apitos-Machina Mach-1 was first assembled in 2001 at Melbourne,
running well under windows 2000, it lived a full and fruitful life serving as a budget PC for a multimedia student.
it was until its unexpected demise from motherboard failure in 2003, that Mach-1 was deemed incompatible.
Apitos-Machina Mach-2 emerged with a new compatible P4P800 motherboard, Windows XP, and a new Antec case.
it was a smooth run, but in 2004 a devastating power supply explosion tragedy occurred,
taking out both power supply and the brand new 9800xt VGA card.
armed with new power supply and replaced VGA card by insurance, Mach-2 kept on rolling,
enduring against all possibilities including adding up harddisks to a total of 3 (370Gb),
traveling hundreds of kilometers to Jakarta, and another VGA card replacement,
and a DVD-RW drive substitute, all between 2005 to 2006.
it defies all odds running games and rendering 3Ds with it's AGP slot and Pentium4 heart,
even all the way to the age of dual-processors and PCI-Express cards, it kept on fighting.

but a few months ago, age has finally taken it's toll on the struggling Mach-2.
It just can't handle things like it used to, especially with more complex games and heavier 3d renderings.
a steady rise of memory complications and power problems plagued the faithful desktop computer,
it still kept on going, struggling, and fighting beside his user.
sadly, the loyal Mach-2 did not die honorably of a warrior's death,
assassinated in his fight, betrayed by his comrade that ironically, was job is to keep him alive.
it was betrayed by none other than the Power backup unit, the APC.
no power outages has ever occurred within the last couple of years,
but a steady decline of battery potential within the APC was masked by it's ever lit power button.
with no warnings, a series of attacks of power-cuts was launched by the sinister APC.
the old, battle-fatigued Mach-2 stands no chance against such pressure,

just a bit o' update
remember the job interview I mentioned in my last journal?
well, I got the job (yay)

I'm now a 3d modeler/texturer/photoshopper/
/illustrator/misc. graphic guy at Polaris3D

I've been busy working every weekdays from 9AM-6PM
(sometimes as late as 8PM)
which explains my lack of updates this couple of weeks.
I hope I can still carry on my personal projects,
so stay tune for any updates on weekends.

not this weekend though,
I'm gonna be busy putting up new wallpapers
(the real room ones)
putting an end to my 10-year old baby-blue-colored attic room.
(been in this room since I was 12)
sepia brown is the new blue

after that I'm planning to change all the bedsheets to dark brown,
and have the old furnitures painted to a similar color.
afterwards I'm hoping to change the floor into fake-wood tiles,
making everything more calm and warm.
but planning is just plans,
so wallpapers first, everything else later

although I'm in the lucky 30% that doesn't get a sudden 'indoor/outdoor swimming pool combo',
it still sucks big time...
3 days with no electricity or running water,
a week with no internet and tv, (they're back on now, finally)

Child of the new age, *aphaits

a few things happened after Christmas,
the most obvious is the new years, Happy new years everyone!
the quake in Taiwan was a surprise since it disconnects 60% of internet connection in Asia.

for new years, all my family from Jakarta, relatives from Bandung,
and a few more from Surabaya celebrated new years together.
we all went to a villa outside the city and had a nice get-together.
the thing is, right after we arrived there, my back tooth started acting funny.
and I'm definitely not laughing.
by the next day, it developed into a throbbing pinch and solid foods started to haunt me.
at new years eve, I can't bite anything harder than soup since it hurts so much.
my left throat began to ache and basically, makes me wanna rip my tooth out myself.
but at new years eve at midnight,
just for a few minutes,
the pain doesn't matter...

as I looked down from the hill view facing the all the lit houses surrounded by mountains,
the usually dark valley was covered with many tiny house lights and people celebrating new years.
and when the countdown was on, the valley was filled with hundreds of tiny fireworks,
several big ones also from the bigger buildings, painting the darkness.
it was a beautiful night welcoming the new year.

and now I'm back here, with fixed internet,
a couple kilograms lighter since I can't eat anything solid,
and apparently hit 10K page views a few days ago
interesting start of the year it has been...

sorry I haven't updated or uploaded new subs in a while
been kinda in a stump lately
and having this weird self-suicide dreams lately...
don't get me wrong, I'm not emo or have a deathwish or something,
just freaked me out a bit with this and all that.
plus, it's my first dream I've had in a few years,
usually it's just sleep, blank, then wake up.
eerie...

anyway, with my newly insomniac-induced anime-marathons,
I decided to re-render my old room model. (my old room at Jakarta)
it's still far from finished and it's just a silly little on-and-off project,
and I can't resume modeling if I'm not there (I'm in Shanghai now, remember?)
(it's in scraps because it's still unfinished)

found this little nifty program today,
its called 3RVX, a skinnable volume thingy, looks sleek on my laptop.
it can mimic the looks of those mac volumes
can't wait to skin it *weeee*

made a skin for it:

although the submission is really buggy today,

Recently, DA has upgraded it's submission process.
it's good and useful, I know I like it,
especially the uploading part for low-connection deviants.
but now they have limited the use of thumbs only for downloadable files.
they have disabled it -entirely- for image type files.

I think this is a step back from using thumbs as a tool and visual aid.
for example, png file uploads that has transparencies,
how the auto-thumb handles it is very visually unpleasing.
rather than replacing the transparency with either DA color/bg color,
it replaced it with blotchy black fills, with rough edges.

now that is the main issue for me so far,
but there are other reason that disabling the thumbs is not a good idea.
a siginificant part of deviations in DA do use the custom thumb feature.
it can be informational, regarding contents of full-viewed images.
people can CHOOSE to view it or not, after seeing the thumb image.
Comic artists or large-format uploaders, or even comedians in that matter,
they use the preview thumbnail for, well, previews!

I know this maybe something you don't and won't care about,
maybe you've always had DA auto-thumbing your images,
so this feature won't effect you at all.
you can CHOOSE not to have custom thumbs.

but some of us that actually use it for it's mere concept of just 'previewing',
or just caring enough so that detailed images won't have unattractive thumbs,
or even just for usability sake, like blotched default thumb images for png's.
heck I'll even pay for it if it's subscriber-only feature,
which I already am, because I think DA subscription is worth it.

so let your opinions be heard,
because it matters.

rare, but inevitable *sigh*
...okay maybe not that rare...like once a day... lasting a few days...
but this one lasted like almost a week

the fact I got a new wacom tablet yesterday doesn't help one bit
although I admit, it is a very sexy piece of hardware
not to sound cocky, but Intuos3 baby! *grin*

at these times I usually revert to my old works
(a.k.a. scribbles that goes nowhere)
my current sketchbook are more similar to Jackson Pollock's paintings,
or that fireworks sound outside (are those gunshots?)

any tips to fight these mind-blocks?

oh, and I got this huuuuge bruise on my right inner thigh from a go kart accident.

re-installed my NFS game and went obsessive in defeating the final boss on the list

ergo, I went "whoa it's night, what time is it?" a lot this past week,

it seems i've been going back and forth on 3D, photography, and recently illustrator

Woke up earlier than expected, two hours earlier.
I set my alarm clock wrong
can't sleep afterwards

Applying for school for Chinese language
wanted to ride my bike there but,
three months of dust crawling on top of my bike
walking it is...

This afternoon,

Went home, checked my DA account
I've been spammed...

physically tired, mentally angry...

Worked on one of my freelance job

restarted my laptop...

Departing to Shanghai in Friday 1^st September
arriving saturday morning, just in time for weekend

although my roommates aren't gonna be there before the 10^th

Just went back from the dentist
wasted like the whoooole day worrying about this tooth and that
Yes, the whole day, I always been kinda terrified going to the dentist
But my dentist is so cool and friendly, it kinda neutralized the fear (well, some of it)
I knew him since I was like.. 4 or some childish age
he's like an uncle to me
anyway,
Traffic during the way, two hours of waiting outside while he drills a patient that begs for mercy
well, he didn't beg for mercy per se... okay I was terrified dammit
and when I'm up in the chair
he took a quick look and said,
"looks good, ok you're fine"
...
"thats it?"
"yeah"
...
"ok" _*phew*

ahahaha, my quickest dentist trip ever
and then he joked how hes not gonna make money if patients are like me
and now I'm home writing this journal with a big grin on my face

:: Cross-Eyed Shenanigans ::

I fav'ed some nice stereoscopic deviations today
makes me wanna render some
although I think I have made several a few years ago
lemme go through my old files and I'll upload some if I found it

stereoscopic illusions are very easy to do in 3D, but a bit tricky in photographs
in 3D, all you have to do is render from 2 views that are slighly different sideways,
like the position of your virtual eyeballs (left and right)
in photography, you have to chose an un-moving subject and do two shots from a slightly different angle
for moving shots, either you have to have 2 cameras shooting at once, or a special 2-lens camera

there's three methods of stereoscopy that I knew:
1. Polarized glasses and shutterspeed-tricks,
like Imax and 3D rides with those 3D glasses,
works best, but expensive to produce and requires a lot of special films, projectors, glasses, etc
I got no example of these, but heres a howstuffworks page on it [link]
2. Colors, red/green red/blue red/cyan combos
cheap and easy, all you need are those kiddy 3D color glasses
an example by *protecta [link]
and last, my favorite
3. Parrarel/Cross-eye methods or scientifically, distal and proximal viewing
veeeery very easy to make, didn't even have to edit colors or use any glasses
but tough on some people, not everybody can cross their eyes at will
me, I can even do a half-cross

so it's the most convenient method personally

it's like even your brain power is in full concentration,

only sleep (medically induced even)

no excuses

just got frickin swamped this month with everything not-design-related and other things
and the design related part too, since I'm virtually unhappy with any colors I came up with Pack 03
wallpapers are done, but the colors are so unoriginal that I'm thinking of abandoning it

damn myself for hyping up to myself lol, dissapointed in the end... meh...

other news, DA v.5 looks sleek, but as some people noticed, it still looks like an incomplete 4.5

Anyway, gonna release the 3rd pack now, before fungal spores grew a mushroom farm on it
