For me, there's a couple reasons. It's not just because it looks "cool" and "badass," but the meanings for me run much deeper into the roots. Many artists have a genre or a scheme they are shooting for in a piece. For example: Dark images that are planetary focuses and what not. But what they tend to do then, is just throw stars in the background to add that last "feel" for realism. This should NEVER be the case.
