I got a job working at a local printing company. It's full time, so now there'll be even less time for me to spend here. I graduated from college December 9th, 2006, and after a little snag with my records, got my diploma on January 12th. It feels weird to be finally done with everything. I mean, there's grad school, but I don't plan on going anytime soon. Took me long enough to complete my undergrad degree.

I'm in the process of moving my site to a new server, but it should be up by the end of the day.

Uhm. ..what else? Oh, I'm working on these sequential pages to submit to this art show called "Other Heroes." Stay tuned for the progress on that.

Man, I 'm so late with this, but I guess it's good to cover all my bases. . .

Last week I went to Jacskon, MS to attend the Soul Powered Art Show hosted by Kendall Patterson, also know as ~gkaiou He's really awesome. I did a piece specifically for the show: Natalie's Daydream [link] It was pretty much a hit.

I was driving home in a thunder storm today, and I saw a tree get struck by lightning not 50 feet from me. It freaked my little sister out, because it was on her side of the car, but she only saw it out of the corner of her eye, so to her it appeared even closer than that. I was really glad to get home safely.

I have lots of pictures, the more "artsy" ones I've posted here. I only took 3 rolls of black and white with me, and one roll of color. However, one of the roll was 3200, and I wasn't sure if the X-ray machine damaged it, so I didn't use it. So, in my luggage it sits, unused. Still I got some surprisingly good shots. I have yet to develop the color roll to see how those shots came out.

I uploaded the images to a Flickr account because I didn't feel like making a page at the moment. However, adding all the descriptions was just as much work.

I planned on keeping a sketch journal, but I haven't had time to really draw anything. I have taken lots of picture, though. Yesterday I took 2 rolls of b/w film to get developed and scanned. It wasn't cheap, but it probably wouldn't be any cheaper in Mobile. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up the film tonight.

I finally got a sequential page up. Hopefully I'll be able to update it on a somewhat regular basis. I care a bit if people read it and like it, but the more important thing is finally getting my story out and being productive as an artist. Sure, I'm a graphic design major, and I'll probably end up working for some company where my individuality is either stifled or compromised for the design unity of the firm, but eventually I would like to have my own thing going, make a name for myself as an artist.

Hopefully this comic is a step in the right direction.

Finally, I have a break in the week where I can work on some art stuff not related to class.

Today in photography was awesome. We're doing a slide projection project now, so today in class we practiced. Two girls in the class were kind enough to model for everyone partially nude. I got some really cool shots. I don't know if I will be able to post them here, though, because of the model release issues, but I may put them up on my site.

Also, I plan on inking "The Warmth" today, so I should have that up before the day is out.

Finally. . .I'm posting drawings again.

I'd been doing spending all my artistic energies on photography. It's frustrating, and I like it. Drawing, however, is my first love, so it's good to be back in that game. I'm working on a children's book as my final project in my Senior Graphic Design class, so I've been posting illustrations from that. It's going to be interesting seeing how it finally comes out, seeing as I have exactly a week to finish producing it.

And then there's photography. I've got a final to work on in there as well that I have yet to start shooting. I get to have a male model. ^_^ My concept calls for it. Hopefully it'll turn out decent. We will see. In the meantime, keep looking out for new and exciting works from your truly.

I may even draw something special, since i haven't posted any traditional art in a while. I've been consumed with photography class as of late.

I'm writing from the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, in Birmingham, AL.

It's pretty nice. I've been taking pictures. Got to see an anti-war procession downtown. It's surreal being in a more metropolitan city. It makes Mobile look really sleepy in comparison.

Expedia.com sucks because I made a hotel reservation, but they didn't fax it over to the hotel, so when we (my older sister, Crystal and me) got there, they were overbooked. So we had to go to the festival and then find another hotel in a city in which we're completely unfamiliar. We had directions though.

I'll be here til Sunday. Hopefully I'll be able to see some historic sights. I want to go by 16th Street Baptist Church and get some shots. But it's such a famous place I don't know if I'll be able to do anything different or artistic. Still I can say I was there just in case a natural disaster decides to wipe out Birmingham in the near future.

I think the title pretty much has nothing to do with this entry. It just sounds cool. Looking around my room at the contact sheet posted on the cork board hanging above my desktop, I was reminded of how I need to take better pictures and be a more studious student of photography.

I just got finished watching "The Fifth Element" on DVD. I've been wanting to get if for a while. It's a great movie. The art, production design, characters. . .all amazing.

I keep talking about how I need to improve on stuff. . .I need to get around to actually doing it. But I have been studying up on photograhy a bit. I even ordered the text my teacher recommended: On Photography by Susan Santog; Basic Photography and Beyond Basic Photography by Henry Horenstein. I'm talking about photography more than I though I would initially.

I just got a new computer that I'm excited about and am in the process of getting used to, because I totally didn't expect to get it anytime soon. However, titme and unforseen occurrence intervened in my favor (as a result of Katrina), so now I'm the humble owner of a 15" Powerbook G4. But I'm gonna be broke after getting all the graphic programs I need to be able to do my school work on here.

As I'm writing this Hurricane Katrina rages outside. I live in Mobile, so If you turn to the weather Channel, you'll see one of their correspondents reporting from my city.

The power went out sometime early this morning or late last night (I was asleep), but we've got a generator going. I was awakened at about 8 a.m. this morning by the beeping of my surge protector/battery, signaling that the power had gone out. I didn't want to get up and turn it off, but the constant beep combined with the sound of rain pounding against my window demanded that I get up. My dad hooked my computer up to it just so he could play his war game.

I thought I'd take this opportunity to update people on the conditions. This is a humongous storm. I live about 2 and a half hours away from New Orlenas, and about 45 minutes from Biloxi. Downtown is flooded, with an expected 15' storm surge, I believe. I'm ok where I live because it doesn't flood. However, the 70 mph wind gusts have been pretty scary. A portion of our back fence blew down not too long ago. I can't even imagine what's it's like in those other areas. Those 10,000 or so people cooped up in the Superdome in New Orleans must be really going through. They have power but the air conditioning is out.

I was kinda surprised that such a massive hurricane struck. Friday afternoon there were still people that didn't know that it was coming, including a girl in my class and my instructor. It was a nice way to end the first week of school. Obviously school was out today, and I don't think anthing is going to be open tomorrow. If South did try to open no one would be there anyway. There most likely traffic lights strewn all across the streets.

So, Katrina isn't as bad as Ivan, but it seems like Ivan passed through a lot more quickly. It's 11:15 and the storm is still going strong. But my family and I are safe, and I hope that everyone else is, too.

School starts in 2 days and I am so unprepared. I've got two classes I need to register for that I need special permission to get into. It seems like I'll never graduate.

I had planned on completing more portrait drawings this summer, but that hasn't happened. Since summer semester let out I've been busy being wrapped up in The Sims 2. I did start a portrait, though, so I'll submit a teaser.

Gosh, I can't wait til my financial aid money comes in.

Yeah, so the governor has ordered a mandatory evacuation for my county, starting at 6 a.m. Saturday, so it looks like I'll be getting a little extended vacation. Hurricane Dennis is headed our way, and after Ivan, people aren't taking any chances. My dad was planning on us staying here, which I was cool with, but we've got to "be in subjection to the higher authorities" and all that, so I guess we'll go.

However, one thing I thought was weird was how people like to run north. . .to cities that are right down the line in the path of the storm. To me, it makes more sense to go west, like to Texas, but I understand that everyone can't afford to travel that far on such short notice. Still, you wouldn't see me in Birmingham or Atlanta, where the hurricane spins off tornados that are way more unpredictable.

With Hurricane Dennis approaching, this weekend should be very interesting.

Well, last semester was the worst of my entire college career. I got a B in Graphic Design I and Writing for Mass Media, and a C in Digital Graphic Design. I also have an incomplete in Intermediate Photo I, which I'm working to remedy. I just got back from the photo lab and my hands stink of corrosive chemicals.

What a way to start the summer.

I'm attending summer courses again. I was taking two classes up until Sunday, and decided to drop the Illustration class I had signed up for. I don't really need the class, and I can take it next Spring if I want to. So, now I'm in Graphic Design II, five days a week with Kyeong, and that's definitely enough for me. So, hopefully with this abundance of free time I can be more productive. Maybe get a job or take commissions or whatever.

I posted an excerpt of a story that I'm working on. It's called "Cappuccino". I got inspired to write it from my personal experiencnes, though the basic story, events, and characters are purely fictional. I don't consider myself a writer, but I've had this story and characters for years (since high school). I guess I'm a little self-conscious and unsure of my writing ability, but I think it's decent enough to go ahead and post it here. I'd really appreciate if you guys could give me feedback. If ya'll like it, I'll post more, so let me know. Please.

It's final week, so soon I'll have a break before summer semester starts. Still, I've got a big project due Thursday in photography that I'm not even close to finishing. I'll get it done though.

Today I had two different assigments due. One in photography, one in Graphic Design I. I didn't like how my photography assignment came out, but I'm glad I got it done, because we can always reprint. But I still feel like I want to reshoot the whole assignment. I just didn't have enough time, though. To my inconvenience, the lab is open during the week the same time I have another class, so the only days I can go are Friday and Saturday; it's not open on Sunday.

I was way more optimistic about my graphic design project, on the other hand. We had to design a series of book covers, and I chose The Chosen, My Name is Asher Lev, and I Am the Clay by Chaim Potok. I didn't wait until the last minute to get it done, and I was really pleased with how they turned out. I may post them here, but if not, look for them on my website.

Now that I have those assigments done I'm considerably less stressed. Photography was really killing me because I wasn't doing what I wanted with my photos. I didn't turn in my last assignment, and this recent one didn't go well either. I'm much more optimistic about the next assignment, involving Polaroid transfers, even though I know it will be more difficult and time consuming. We get to do it over Spring Break, though, and we don't have to do project proposal's so I can just take cool-looking photos rather than worrying whether it fit's a certain concept.

Such is the life of a student artist.

School is hella hectic as usually. I've fallen back into the procrastination rut. It's not that the work is so much is it is that I just don't feel like doing anything. I've already skipped every class at least once, and I only have about two unexcused absenses that are allowed in each. I'm getting it together though. I must be more responsible, there's no excuse for my slacking really. It's just hard when there no one there really to push me to do anything. As long as I'm not flunking out of school my parents have no issue.

I'll get it together though. Now I'm off to go buy some illustration board so I can mount my project that's due tomorrow.

School has been over since the seventh. I came out with pretty good grade. Next semester is going to be crazy, though, since I'm taking three studio courses, including photography. I'm going to be living in the Visual Arts Building, with all the lab time I'll be putting in. But fortunately, I will be doing more graphic design, and can buff up my skills. I really don't have much confidence in myself as a graphic designer. I'd really like to be an illustrator, and that's what my instructors have been encouraging. I think that illustrating children's book would be really cool.

I uploaded some figure drawing to my website. If I load them here, they'll be in the scraps, because they don't have a very refined quality, but they are still good drawings. So take a look if you have time.

Me and my fiancé of two years are no longer together. But the break was peaceable and we're still cool. Still, it's a big change, for obvious reasons.

I finally redesigned my site. It's not completely done, but it's mostly complete, so go check it out. I went with something simple, and not too overtly girly—except for the pink color scheme of course. I'm rather proud of it. I'm not big on doing that kind of thing from scratch, and lissaexplains.com helped out a great deal.

I guess I don't have to tell you that I survived the hurrican ok. A lot of trees were blown down, but my all in all my city maintained minimal damage. Pensacola, FL, on the other hand, wasn't so lucky. It's about three weeks later and things still aren't quite back to normal.

I guess after Florida getting hammered by two storms in a row Alabama is due for some action. The last hurricane this severe to come to my area was Fredrick in '79—before I was born.

I'll try to post pics of the aftermath. Hopefully nothing will be damaged to badly, but that's to be expected.

School will probably be canceled on Wednesday. My little sister gets out 3 hrs early tomorrow.

I'm in photography class right now, taking it for summer semester. It's really cool, and I'm learning something completely foreign for the first time since I took Spanish last semester. I was totally confused with the teacher going on about f-stops and shutterspeeds. But photography is the kind of thing where you just have to get out there and put everything into practice to get it.

We take all out pictures in black & white, and develop our own film in the photolab housed in the photography classroom. There's a darkroom as well, so it's a very hands-on and intimate process. When I get some decent prints y'all will be the first to see them. I like photographing my younger sisters, because they both make wonderful models.

But this was the most hectice week I've ever had. I've seriously got to stop procrastinating. I had my Productions, Art History, and Desktop Publishing finals due Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, respectively.

The project for Productions was a CD case and book, featuring the wedding-themed illustrations that I posted here. The book turned out reaally well, but I don't know if I'll post the pages here, because it's different seeing it on the screen than seeing the actual book. I'll see what I can do, though.

Tuesday, I had three art history essays due, but I didn't start on them til Monday night. It's a good thing I checked because I originally thought they were due Thursday. But I got them done in the nick of time. I'm particularly proud of my essay on Pittura Metaphisica (metaphisical painting).

My Desktop Publishing final was the worst. I had to do three different magazined spreads, two of which consisted of redesigning the feature article pages of a magazine of my choice—then replacing the pictures from the original layout with my own original illustrations. I'm currently not to fond of Adobe Illustrator at the moment. I actually got to class late, and still had to take my final exam. I didn't study for it, but it was just a combination of all the exams we took throughout the semester, so if you knew what you were doing on the computer you could pass the test.

I'm still have residual stress from my no-sleep marathon, but things are starting to wind down, and I can finally relax. I'll try to post some of the art from these projects

I joined some months ago, but I just got around to posting something there about two days ago. So the very next day I'm getting all this cool feedback, and my hits have soared to 2100+ already. That's so cool.

I think it also has something to do w/ the work I submitted to the club. I really love doing photorealistic portraits. I did them a lot back in high school as the concentration for my AP Studio Art portfolio. But since I got into college, I haven't had the time of energy to sit down and do any. But now I'm trying to get back in the mode, so and I've even printed out a thumbnail list of pics that I plan on drawing.

We finally finished with the Oracle, and sent if off on monday. A few pieces of my artwork where chosen to be in it, and one of my drawing was in the running to be the cover image. But it didn't really fit what we wanted the feel of the cover to be, and I agreed. I was surprised that everyone liked it so much, since the drawing was something I did back in high school. Still, it's nice to have your artwork appreciated. So I'm eager for the magazine to come back from the printer so I can see the final product.

We had to draw this fish picture of a fish that had all these colors for mating season, and frankly it took a lot of patience that I didn't have. Lucky for me, Stephen, the lab tech is an absolute angel and stays over until everyone gets their stuff printed. So, I got it done, but it doesn't look as good as I wanted.

I've really got to start thinking abou my future as a graphic artist. I was talking to Jamaal, my fiané, and he really got me thinking about what I'm gonna do once I get out of college—I have no idea. I need to get on the ball seeing about getting an internship or something in the upcoming semesters, because I'm planning on graduating next year. I mean, everyon tells me I'm a pretty good artist, but it won't do me any good, especially going to school for it, if I end up jobless.

So. . .that's something I need to consider.

We went to two different asian food stores in two different cities, and was introduced to some yummy new snacks, pocky in particular.

We spent a lot of money on fast food, so I'm probably going to gain back all that weight I lost while being sick sooner than I'd like.

Did a bit of drawing, but not as much as I would have liked. I hope to get some form of my comic done before school starts so I can get some feedback as to whether it's really worth the effort. But then I'm really doint it just for me because I have all these ideas floating in my head that I can't seem to get down on paper in the right way.

Today was the last day of classes and finals are next week. I hate that I have to go up to the computer lab at school to work on my final project in Typography.
