It's been almost a year since I wrote in my journal. I think it's time I share some good news with everyone. All 3 of my acrylic art works got accepted for a show in the City of Lone Tree, near Denver, CO. I'm ecstatic!

I will post the paintings after the show's over.

This year's been truly an educational year for me. Since May 2009, I've been honing my skills in other mediums such as oil and acrylic. But, not just learning how to use them. Basically how to create artwork with good design, color and concept. It's a whole new world compared to my detailed drawings...

To all of you who visited my page and faved my works, I am honored.

Thanks for reading.

Dina.

Well, I'm happy to say that I finished the Tri For the Cure, Denver race this morning after a grueling 2:06 hours. I didn't get my goal to finish it under 2 hours, but heck, I did the best I could.

My swimming of 1/2 mile (750 meters) was quite pathetic, but I did an okay 11 mile (18.3 Km)bike ride and a much better 3.1 mile (5 Km) run.

My goal next year is to shave off at least 10 minutes off the swim, by practicing more skills and overcome fear of people kicking my face while in the water!! Man, I couldn't believe how many people jumped into the water at 7 am this morning. They were all around me. I choked, lost my form and hyperventilated!! lol!

Meanwhile, buying a road bike would definitely cut at least 20 minutes off my time. I have a heavy hybrid mountain bike, so it was sheer torture trying to climb those hills. But biking is the best part of the race to me-- nothing beats charging downhill at its so-called 'top speed'.

Anyway, it'll just be a personal battle for me. Me against my old time. So next year should be a cinch right?? lol!

***
I'm off to the mountains tomorrow!

Maybe I'll come up with a new concept for my drawing in a week or so...

Hope your weekend was superfine...

Hugs,
Dina, triathlete.

The atelier that I have been frequenting to do life drawing sessions and the occasional drawing classes, have decided to close its doors. It's called Tri For The Cure at Cherry Creek Reservoir, CO.

My goal is to finish...

...750-800 yards swimming (half mile),
...12 + miles of biking and
...3+ miles of running.

I hope to finish it in less than 2 hours.

I'm ready.

***

Then I'm off for a week's vacation in the mountains at a lodge. Multiply it by 50

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1758... If you haven't, add 1757

6.
I'm really excited to start a 4 week course in figure drawing from life. It starts tomorrow...

***

Some tips...

My process for drawing hair for Beyond the Broken Gate:-

The drawing :[link]

1. Get the initial form (shape) and flow of hair

2. Shade the lightest parts, followed by the darks

3. Define the form all over with relatively darker pencil - When the pencils are slightly sharpened, the lines and form will take shape much easier. Use a light hand to shade.

4. Lift highlights with kneaded eraser - After determining where the highlights should go, shape the tip of the eraser into a tiny point and dab the point very lightly onto the area.

5. Refine - Fill in all white gaps within the shaded areas and define the lines where necessary, plus darken the darkest parts to further create more depth.

Thanks for reading!

Just came back from New Mexico and what a hectic time it was.

Remember that offer to hang up my drawings at an antique mall in Albuquerque? Well, it fell through. It wasn't the best place to display drawings unless I want to sell antique frames as well! Heh heh!

I'll try a more appropriate place in the future...

All is good...

This coming new year, I'm determined to draw a few more detailed drawings and proceed on my anatomical studies. I haven't signed up for the 'Exploring Oils' at the Colorado Academy of Art yet, but would love to do it.

So, I may have some different stuff going on here as I trudge a slightly different path to fulfill my artistic goals.

Just found this in a little booklet by Mac Anderson titled The Nature of Success...

*Discover you personal definition of success

*Discover your core existence, or your reason for being

*Set clearly defined goals

*Never waiver in your belief that you can achieve them

*Manage your attitude

*Persevere when adversity strikes... and it will

*Learn to take risks and embrace change

*Keep kindness in your heart...always

*Love and be loved

*Make a difference whenever, wherever, and however, you can

***

Thanks for your kind support and comments. I hope you have achieved all your personal goals this year.

Here's wishing the best on your journey in 2008!

Happy New Year!

I just came across an artist named Winston today .

It's clear to see that he's progressed over the years, improving his painting techniques- brush strokes, proportions, balance of color and negative space... Above all, I think this artist has gained confidence and it shows in his recent works. There's no hesitation on his part to literally brush colors ONTO his perfectly rendered figures. The colors patterns and rhythm make one think of Gustav Klimt, a masterful artist.

His works have inspired me to forge ahead with my figure drawings and start painting with the acrylics I have shelved about a year ago.

When you have time, check him out...

Bear with me as I will put more and more Wips of my current drawing, Beyond The Broken Gate. (BBG)
I expect this drawing to be finished sometime in January.
I have matted some drawings to be taken to Albuquerque with me this Wednesday. I'm hoping that they'd catch some shoppers' eyes. If not, no biggie... just have to try something new... like COLORS and interesting compositions---
in acrylics and oils...

Thanks for the inspiration, Winst!

A Little Explanation on That Saturday Morning

The drawing: [link]

Symbolism - this drawing is open to any interpretation. Here's mine...

It's about innocence and a pure heart (the girl), about to be exposed to the real world.

Toy Mirror - To me, the mirror symbolizes a clean past.
Ribbon - To connect the past to the main subject.
The cat - is something from the natural world that gives the subject unconditional love. In this case, it is alarmed, surprised or maybe just pleasantly moved by the shadow at the window, and the door, slowly opening.

The shadow at the window and the darkness - I'm not even sure you'll be able to see that hint of shadow by the window, which is the surprise element here, finally included in this drawing. (When I first included that in my thumbnail sketch, my husband was horrified because it looked so sinister. However, by adding the word "Morning" to the title, he calmed down a little bit.) Anyway, the shadow by the window and also the darkness around the door area symbolize the unknown future.

Pearl bracelet - I used a reference which was a gift to my daughter from her grandmother in Malaysia. A token from a loved one.

Toy Pearl necklace - It's the childlike innocence, and vanity, some remnants of her personality that will remain with her when she grows up.

22" X 26" of drawing on the back of Arches Watercolor 140lbs Hot pressed paper. I learned a great deal while drawing this.

I tried to have as many elements in this drawing as I could muster. Metal from the door, Wooden floor, Gem and pearls for the bracelet, fur, flowing fabric, dark, textured rug against the light. The other factor I considered was having a dynamic drawing of a seemingly static environment. Notice the diagonals on the base of the drawing - the lines of her legs, arm, triangular shadows, diagonal light beam. I hope these elements help to move the viewer's eyes all around the drawing. The darkest and lightest area which are on opposite sides are there for viewers to rest their eyes. I hope this makes sense...

1- Darks - always a challenge. For the very dark shadowy area near the door, I blended a layer of 4B (2mm clutch) followed by another layer of 4B, then finished off with a layer of H (2mm clutch)

2- Hair - negative drawing. Kneaded eraser.

3- Pearls in sunlight - negative drawing. Notice that the sunlit surfaces are white while the highlighted areas of the pearls in the shadows are quite dark. (Pearls have highlights even in the shadows!!) Make sure that the shadows and highlights on the pearls line up.

4- Go with the flow - I decided to just go wild in the shadowed areas. As you can see, her skin's very rough and spotty, except on her face. I am still learning to blend the darks. For now, it'll do, I mean, rough, overlapping strokes, will just have to do until I better my blending.

Thanks for reading!

I hope you all had a fun Halloween. Our neighborhood was surprisingly quiet last night, even though it was a clear, starry night. We had costume parades in 2 schools. Students, teachers, even parents wore silly costumes.

One costume that I got a kick out of -was on a young student girl- A stripe-y black and white prison garb. She had long blond hair, dark shades and the reddest lipstick on. She was even talking into a fake cellphone. On the front of her jail shirt was a sign that said 'HILTON'.
Good news. I was offered to sell my art in Albuquerque NM. In an antique mall. I'm thinking about coming up with some new stuff, some rough sketches, even going into sketchy oil paintings.

Next offer I received was to paint a mural at a preschool in a church. I think it'll be fun to paint Noah's ark and all those cute animals....
Yeah, so I'm stuck here in Malaysia while my parents and aunt went to Bali because there was a bomb threat and advisory by the Australian Embassy. Some said that the Australians give bomb warnings routinely-- every month, but since this one was mentioned on TV3 in Malaysia, I decided to forgo the Bali trip.

Not worth risking the lives of my kids...

***

I've been going to karaoke bars and singing with my sisters, all the while I'm drawing a portrait of my cousin, and also taking a commission for a portrait of my mom's good friend. Didn't think I was going to be this busy... I've got 4 more protraits to draw! Yikes!

I think I'll post photos of those drawings when I get back to Colorado... don't expect much, they're pretty rough and fast works...

Hope you are having a great July, stay safe and be happy!

What can I say...?

Armin's workshop-- it's like a revelation! He shared with us his methods of how to draw hair and the eye, but the most I learned was the process of achieving a conceptual drawing. From the fruition of an idea to the execution of the idea. We had a model (my first experience drawing from life in an academic environment) and he posed for the group as well as for each one of us. I'll post the drawing once it's finished. (not sure when coz it's darn huge!)

Armin is just how I'd imagined him to be. He's a pretty cool guy--very jovial in his ways, humble, helpful, quite positive and open. He's definitely a mentor any aspiring artist should have-- or more realistically, watch on DA.

Look for him here under the name 'nimra'.

Just thought of a laundry list of things to ask ourselves this year...

Goals...

What have we attained last year that we are proud of?

Who was the person or what inspired us to attain the goal(s)?

So what are our goals for this year?

***

Memories...

What was the best time we had last year? When did it happen?

Whom with? Why did we consider it the best? Did we record that experience somewhere? A photograph, a journal, a drawing, poetry...?

***

Dreams...

What are our dreams?
Let's make them into attainable goals by...

1. Putting together an organized thought,
2. Record those thoughts onto paper
3. Record the obstacles or what's keeping us from our dreams
4. Create the steps or solutions to achieve the dreams

5. and most importantly-- Put a date/ deadline on those steps/solutions...

Good luck!

Hope you all have a rewarding year 2007!

Phew! What a whirlwind trip. Very short and exhilirating. I was able to be with my aunt who flew in from the south, just to watch the Balloon Fiesta.

The Fiesta. Photos just don't do justice at all. One just had to be there to experience the sights and sounds of this event.

Feel the cold morning dew seep through your outer jacket onto your skin when you're out in a field with thousands of others at dawn. Watch the beautiful colors as the sunrise skims the top of those prisma colored giant orbs.

To me, the most distinctive of all was the smell and sound of propane gas as huge burners fired up the air in the balloons.

Thousands of people applause and cheer, as one by one, those hundreds of balloons in different shapes, ascend to the beautiful blue sky.

One just had to be there.

Enjoy my few photos and thanks very much for reading!
Next up, I'll be working on a portrait of a girl long gone, for another DA member, Mr Corcoran. [link]

He stumbled upon a treasure chest full of very, very old photos. He's painstakingly gotten the photos restored and now, they are being exhibited in Munster, Ireland.
Hopefully the drawing will make its way to that exhibition before the end of October...
It's my first time using charcoal to the best of my ability; first time using Bristol Vellum paper which I absolutely like; and the first time drawing a nude figure.

I used some stock image I had for the figure and my husband's eye, as reference. The eye could use some tweaking, but I'm too tired to go on... besides, we're going out to dinner tonight...

Either I need to be bold with my pencil strokes like HBerry for Topiltzin [link]

or just get a scanner.

I've looked at several and for my purpose, which is scanning black and white drawing I'd need a good grayscale scanner. I've come to the conclusion that Epson 4980 is the one to go with. (It's about US$250)

Any opinions on this particular scanner or better scanners that don't break the bank (US$250 - US$350) will be appreciated!

If there's none, I'll develop a better method of drawing darker lines... or take better photos! EUREKA!

It's finally completed. It took two weeks to finish, about 20 hours or so total. I'm about 90% satisfied with the result, 100% happy that it's over.

The reference photo was quite small. So it was quite a challenge from the start...

The drawing is called 'Tah...' That's what I call her.

I'm a little sentimental about this one because it's the first portrait of my grandmother that I've done. She's my all. I love her very, very much.
And I miss her a lot bcoz she's all the way in Malaysia.

(wiping tears and exhaling the sorrows away...)
(clears throat)

Let's change the subject shall we??

I'm moving on to another drawing. It's of my sister's boyfriend. The reference photo was printed from her email attachment and is quite blurry. Maybe I should make an abstract drawing of him instead... heh heh.

Anyway, enjoy the drawing of Tah, and give your honest opinions. (For works in progress, they'll be in Scrap)
I want to add that I've been enjoying DA very, very much. Not just because I have been exposed to countless amazing works of art in about every medium I could think of, but also for the enduring support of my friends on DA. I consider them the soul of DA.

A protractor, not for drawing circles (though that would still be fun) but, to use the points as scale reference;

A ruler coz I don't have one but a T-square from Home Depot!

Also bought some blending stumps.
Never seen one, never used one b4... It was pretty funny coz I really didn't know what shape of a thing I was looking for!! (LOL to myself, tear in eye... now rofl!! )

So, I read every single thing on the back of packaged items in the drawing section of the store that didn't look like a pencil nor an eraser!! (Sigh in relief after a huge laughing break!! )

I've been putting it off for a while, drawing, that is. The last time I did anything close to a drawing was in August 2005. It was of my little girl, charcoal on 24x36 inch canvas, believe it or not! My husband likes it, but I don't... The texture was quite awful... yeah, who would've guessed, right!??

Then it was all sketching while the kids are taking their baths or while at the zoo. Not much for serious drawing. Today I picked up a 4B and started my drawing again. Not serious, but just a warm up. It's not as smooth as I'd like it to be, but it's good for the moment... I'll improve over time... If you want to view it, check it out in my gallery. It's called Sticker On Teapot. Be kind, ok?? Hehe...
