On the 27th of November, I participated in a project called 'Blijf in je kot!' (Stay in your dorm!). The concept was that students would open up their dorms for artists to intervene. Between 16PM and 11PM this thursday, the dorms were open for visitors. With an average of 120 visitors per dorm and a total of 1200 we can say it was a succes. In my gallery you find pictures of the placing of my work in one of the dorms. A series of 10 drawings (35 x 38 cm), wooden figures and three little wooden frameworks.

A couple of times I stumbled upon pictures on Flickr of wonderful Japanese folded moleskines, full of drawings made by a bunch of different artists from around the globe. Moly_x is a project that was started by Marty Harris. Since then, it has grown. Now there exist a lot of Moleskine Exchange groups, all containing 4 to 6 artists.

Each artist will set off with a small Japanese (accordian) folded Moleskine. Creating a drawing, collage, or painting, then send on to the next artist. Each artist will draw on a spread (2 or 3 pages) then send it on to the next artist. When the artists book is filled, it will be returned to the owner with images created by artist around the world. Each artist has a month to make an entry. The outcome will be a pleasant and surprising adventure, as artists are encouraged to interact and merge their art with others.

I'd love to join this and start an exchange group as well. Therefore, I'm looking for interested artists. It would be nice if we could create a group that crosses borders and contains artists with inspiring work that can interact with the work of other members. So if you're interested, feel free to leave a comment or contact me on charlotte@allesstinkteenbeetje.be.

For more information check out [link]

[I found 5 interested artists so the group is full! Hangdog and twentywaystosee, I'll contact you once I'm back home from holidays (around the 10th of August). If you read this, please send your real name and address to charlotte@allesstinkteenbeetje.be so that I can contact the main Moly_x group (when I'm back) and get the exchanging started!]

... why this week couldn't get much better:

1. There lives a tame bunny in our garden. We named him Boris and he eats carrots out of our hands. He sleeps in the tunnel that he dug under the summerhouse and spends his days hopping through the garden, sitting under the trampoline and socialize with the chickens. And oh! He has hangears (if that is a right word in English) which make him the cutest. I love Boris.

2. My sister celebrates her birthday tomorrow (Friday the 13th). I bought her the newest book of Joke van Leeuwen (of whom she is a big fan because of me). And friday we're gonna dine out at a pizzeria. Happy happy joy joy! I love my sister (and my brother and my parents and pizza and Joke van Leeuwen).

3. I got my first assignment! Someone wants me to make a drawing or painting that she can hang above her bed. She was thinking about two sleeping guys, but leaves me free in the outcome of the idea. I'm still thinking whether I want to work big or make a series that consists of three or four smaller drawings. The fact is that I'm used to make series and working small, so drawing or painting a big work would make it even more exciting and more a challenge! This will be my first commissioned work. I love drawing (and sleeping guys/napmen).

4. I've got the sweetest boyfriend of the whole universe. I love my boyfriend.

5. My graduation paper really makes progess. I'm practically finished with the first version and Tuesday I have an appointment with my coach. Hopefully she'll give me some useful feedback. Saying that I love my coach would go too far, but let's say that I love a graduation paper that makes progress.

6. I just got an e-mail of a publishing house who wants me to illustrate (cover in colour and five black-and-white illustrations) one of their books. I don't have any specific information yet, but the book has something to do with child welfare. This is exciting³! (I really have to restrain myself from typing billions of exclamation marks.) I love illustrating (and children).

For the next four weeks I'll be busy writing my graduation paper on melancholy. I want to explore the ambiguity (sickness or gift) of the phenomenon during history and investigate the possible link between creativity and melancholy on the one hand and between melancholy and madness on the other hand. Furthermore I want to ask myself the question whether depression is the dignified replacement of melancholy in 21th century and whether the medicalization and the hype of positive psychology (all those guru's who teach us how to lead a happy life) is a good or a bad thing. In my eyes, a soft breeze of melancholy can stimulate creative thoughts, because it's a very reflective feeling that's always in search of beauty. Being confronted with the irony of it all and the absurdity of everything can be energizing, once in a while. But if you get carried away, the energy can transform in the exact opposite.

Since this essay deals with an issue that might arouse someone's interest, I thought of making a journal of it. So what do you think about it? Are you a melancholic type? Do you think of melancholy as a positive or a negative feeling? Have you ever suffered from a depression? What about the link between melancholy and creativity? Do you think that artists suffer more psychologic illnesses then people that are busy in other branches? What about possible similar characteristics between psychiatric patients and artists? ...?

I hope you all like the drawings as much as I had fun making them. All the fifteen drawings and the display box are titled together as 'Monumenske'. Monumenske stands for 'monument' and 'menske' (which means little, pathetic human being in Dutch). I chose this title to reflect the silliness and above all the sadness of the idea that human beings are capable of everything and can justify their effort to rise above all other living creatures.
