Because I can't let *jocarra one-up me, as per her little journal here ( [link] ), I think I'll give my own personal explanation of how biological evolution occurs. And to make it easier to read, I'll just break up my stream of consciousness into several tributaries.

Charles Darwin put it best when he summarized evolution as "descent with modification." What he meant is that, as inherited changes accumulate in a population, the characteristics of that population change, so that, after so many generations, the population will be distinct from the population at a previous generation.

With the discovery of the genome, and how it is, in a way, the quantification and physical manifestation of heredity, we now have a good grasp of what these modifications are, and how they occur.

In sexually reproducing organisms, such as trees and people, offspring are imperfect copies of their parents, as only half of each parent's genome is used to make the offspring's genome.

In asexually reproducing organisms, such as populations of clones (like the Cavendish banana), or bacteria, evolution occurs as mutations accumulate with each passing generation. In bacteria, mutated genes can be shared with individuals in the bacterial version of sex, where the gene is inserted into the other, sort of like a cross between a common cold and an informational pamphlet.

Because bacteria have very short lifespans, having generations that last from minutes to, at most, weeks, they reproduce quickly, and because they can swap genes mutated or otherwise, with each other (provided they're related or similar species), they are capable of evolving very quickly, much, much faster than sexually reproducing eukaryotes, which tend to have generations of at least 9 months, to at most in some extreme cases, centuries (i.e., orange roughies and sequoias).

In asexually reproducing eukaryotes, such as the Cavendish banana, navel oranges, or the common dandelion, they don't evolve as quickly as their sexually-oriented relatives, if at all. They persist primarily because they are capable of dispersing to exploiting some specific ecological niche faster than their sexually reproducing relatives, such as the way common dandelions infest suburban lawns throughout the world, or, in the case of Cavendish bananas and navel oranges, humans care and nurture them in their own artificial ecosystems for profit.

I've come to the conclusion that Saturday morning cartoons have now officially reached a nadir of quality. I haven't seen such appallingly lousy cartoons since the day when Ghostbusters finally went off the air, or when NBC finally decided to broadcast cartoons after a 10 year hiatus.

Q:Well, Stanton, why don't you just subscribe to cable and watch Cartoon Network and the like?
A:"Are you going to buy the subscription for me, or do you expect me to use the money I'm presently spending on my education and food?"
