Every day, I'm feeling like I just won the lotto, and I have chosen the lump sum. There's lame hours or moments or parts of days, but when I think about where I am...

how fortunate I am to be here:

what a long dream this is the fulfillment of:

what a longer dream this is the start of:

when I think of my classes, my brilliant professors, my talented classmates, my school filled with the disproportionately bright of all races, races, creeds:

when I think of the opportunity I have to sing under Donald Neuen, one of the top chorus leaders in the world, and how his approaches to musical performance have changed me in two rehearsals:

when I listen to Dr. Steinberg's theory lectures and my whole conception of music shifts and reels, and clicks in place more securely:

when I stop and appreciate the weather, the mild climate, the cool evenings, the trees:

when I'm running in Drake and the pavement's on my feet and I'm thinking of music, or poetry, or better, the rhythm, the wind:

when I stop thinking and start *listening* to everything around me, a free meditation, an ever-present symphony:

when I think of the people I've met, the friends I've made and will keep making, the special people, my family, my friends from back home:

when I compare all of this to what I went through to get here: all of it:

and when I look from my quiet, often otherwise-unoccupied room out on the hills of Hollywood and beacon Getty:

or when I look from the Getty down on this place, or across it, to Los Angeles or to the sea:

then the only words I know to say are:

Gratias tuo, domine; gratias. Gratias deus.

And never before have I meant it as much.
