My but the time has gone by since my last journal entry. My husband and I took our first vacation in years, and drove through the Pacific Northwest in August and September. Absolutedly beautiful, and we had a terrific time. A highlight was the Andrew Wyeth exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum.

I made a quick trip back to Hawaii for the fall watercolor society show. I had three peices accepted, but no awards. Also took a week long workshop from Ann Pember, who does fantastic florals: annpember.com

Upon returning to California to catch up on projects with my other house and my Mother's house, my Mom became seriously ill and was in the hospital for 10 days, before passing away on Oct 26th. She was 91 and had a long and wonderful life. I miss her terribly, but know she is now with my Dad, and free from the pain she suffered for so many years. Now begins the process of executing the estate and taking care of the myriad of details. Most likely I won't be doing much painting, but then again it is so theraputic.

The reception for the Ho'omaluhia show was great with nearly 200 people showing up! Not bad, considering the botanical garden gallery is not exactly on the beaten path of art patrons! Didn't sell anything though. Still have two paintings (Midnight Orchids, and Morning at A&B) in the juried Artists of Hawaii show, through Mar 19.

My latest showing is at the Honolulu Country Club gallery, with 8 other artists. It is an "open" show, with no theme, and is not juried. I have 5 paintings in this show.

I'm awaiting word on acceptance of three paintings in the Hawaii Watercolor Society, juried Member's show. Should know by around the 18th.

Other than that, I'm coordinating a weeklong workshop, taught by Mary Ann Beckwith here in Honolulu, the end of the month. [link] ;and planning a trip to visit my Mom in California.

The show had about 100 people for the opening reception, and lots of visitors signed the guest book during the month of Feb. I didn't have any paintings accepted in the Windward Artist Guild juried show, or the Association of Hawaii Artists (AHA) juried "Aloha Show". However, I have had one selected for the Hawaii Watercolor Society juried show - my Floats with Bamboo. The juror is Tony Van Hasselt, with whom I'm taking a workshop the end of March! I'm also going to enter a few in the AHA Pau Hana exhibit tomorrow, and have been asked to leave some paintings from the last show, too.

Show will be on display at Puahi Tower, in Honolulu for most of Oct, and it is a juried show. As a lark, I submitted what I thought was a worthless abstract, and it was accepted. She is retiring after 50 years! I never would have guessed she was even over 60! Anyway, I'm in shock that she would retire, and I have to find someone new to cut may hair (gasp!) This painting is for Lillian.

The town party is a local fundraiser for the Outdoor Circle, an organization that provides beautification and other programs for the town. It was a nice event and my second year to participate. I had good sales, selling two framed pieces, including my featured "Pink Calla Lilies No. 2" and my Marina after the Rain, seen here: [link] . Sold more than half of my matted originals, and about 35 note cards. There was a nominal fee for the space, and no commissions, so I did pretty well.

I use glass floats in many of my still life paintings. Recently someone asked me what they were. It didn't dawn on me that, not everyone recognized them. So, in case you were wondering:

They are glass fishing floats. They were used by the Japanese and Russians (and maybe others) to give bouyancy to their fishing nets. Over the years, they broke off and floated around, washing up on beaches and rocks around the world. These days most floats are plastic, but there are millions of the glass ones still floating around. Many people collect them and display them in baskets or arrangements. Some of them are as big as bowling balls, and have elaborate marcrame rope around them. Others are as small as 2-3 inches. These little balls intrigue me, just thinking of the amazing travels they've had. What stories they'd tell, if they could talk!

(This was my first public sale of my work) I shared a space with my firend, to sell our watercolors. I kept my selection small and cheaply priced and sold more paintings than everyone on the "Art Walk". I only brought a few framed items, really not expecting to sell them, but sold two. I sold 9 other small matted paintings, plus some printed notecards. I think the key to my success was keeping the items small and inexpensive. This was not the crowd that wanted large things. Perhaps the most promising fall-out of this experience was that I've been contacted by someone who saw my work at the "party" and wants to decorate her new office with my work! I'll let you know how it goes.

My Wednesday painting group, called the "Windward Wanderers" has painted several times this year on a small island in the middle of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, known as Coconut Island. The rest of the world knows this scenery as the opening scenes of the old TV show "Gilligan's Island". Today, the island hosts the University of Hawaii's Marine Biology research center. There are many picturesque spots to paint, here. On Dec 1st, the "Windward Wanderers" opened a small show of paintings we've done on the island this year. The criteria was anything 8X10 inches or smaller, and priced under $100. Subject had to be painted at Coconut Island. The show and sale is open to faculty and grad students who work on the island. We hung a total of 64 paintings, four of which were mine, and I've already sold one. The mini-show is meant to provide an opportunity for faculty or students to purchase a memento or gift at a reasonable price. The low price is also a "thank you" to the University for allowing us access to the island to paint.

Good news, the Rainy Street No. 2 sold. These are fairly easy for me to do, and seem to be popular. I sold Rainy Street No. 1 also.
An attorney friend of mine, has asked me to display my work in his office and reception area. This seems like a great, and cheap, way to get more exposure for my work, and decorates his office for FREE. Cool, yea?
