I have always known that I'm a good artist. I'm not a great artist, but I'm OK with that. I admire great artists and illustrators and their work. are incredible in the comics field. I'm not them. I don't have the painting ability of or the pin up skill of or That's OK too. I love what I do and I enjoy it.
But what I do well and what I love is to leave my legacy, not with my paintings, but with human beings. I teach and tht is my legacy. I teach a new generation of artists and encourage them to be better, be braver and to expand their abilities.
I don't just teach art with them, I teach life. I talk with my students and I listen to them, they know that I want the best for them. We have talked about family deaths, unemployment, religion, philosophy, growing up, growing old, life love and all that we call the human existence. And we talk about art. A lot about art.
My hope is for each of them to be happy being themselves. Here on DA I have several of my students who are at various stages of creativity and I am thankful for each of them, I am proud of each of them.
These are some of my students,

<img class="avatar" src="http://a.deviantart.net/avatars/v/i/vicerablack.gif" al...

I have a walk in closet filled with all the comics I've collected from 1964 to the present

2) I have a book in every room. I read all the time. I have 22 bookshelve in my home filled with books. From languages to history, from fiction to inspirational.

3) I collect Vampires. I have 200+ vampire toys and collectibles. The only Dracula Beanie Baby Bear - Yep I have it. The Count Chocula Bobble head, yep. Fake teeth from the Lost Boys Movie, yep and action figures, dolls (yes I have the Barbie -Ken Dracula. I also have 500 books on Vampires. and tons of Vampire movies.

4) Anyone who knows me already knows that I love Ties. I have 400 novelty neckties.

5) When I speak about cartooning at schools and libraries, I always ask how many of the kids have been told comics and manga are bad. Many raise their hands so I tell them to point out how they are supposed to read Hamlet in school and the I tell them the Truth About Hamlet Speech: Hamlet is the story about a young man who is haunted by the ghost of his father, who tells him that his mother and uncle, having an incestuous affair, murdered him. Hamlet goes skitzo, thinks about suicide, his sister does commit suicide after going insane. Hamlet talks to the dead, curses his mother, kills his uncle and dies. And that is what is considered good literature for school students, but Batman or Naruto are bad? Most teachers laugh nervously...

6) My Grand mother was from Mexico. I look Russian and love Japanese art and language. I'm confused.

7) I'm the Vice President of our county Art Society, Teacher at the local museum, teach at the college and have 7 books, 3 are still in print.

8) I have one tattoo, one piercing and many scars. One on my side from a broken beer bottle in Spain, but I'm out of space so that's another story...

Tag: I could tag more but eight is the rule.

In an old Chinese legend, an artist named Zhang Seng You was asked to paint a mural in a temple. He painted several dragons but left out the pupils from their eyes. The Abbot asked him why. Zhang explained that if he painted the pupils, the dragons would come alive. When the Abbot insisted, Zhang proceeded to paint the dragons’ eyes. As soon as he finished the pupils on one of the dragons, it roared to life and flew away in a thunderous flash of lightning.

A Japanese legend tells the story of Sesshu. As a young acolyte, he was constantly painting instead of praying or reading the sutra's. This so angered the abbot that he had Sesshu taken outside and tied to a tree so that he could not paint. Sesshu wept at this indignity until he noticed his tears had made mud in the dust. He the proceeded to draw mice, using the mud on the ground. The mice then came to life, crawled up and ate through his ropes, freeing him.

These stories embody the philosophy of sumi-e. The goal is not to reproduce the appearance of the subject, but to capture its soul. To paint a horse, the sumi-e artist must understand its temperament better than its muscles and bones. To paint a flower, there is no need to perfectly match its petals and colors, but it is essential to convey its liveliness and fragrance. A bird should reflect its fragileness, its flight or its life, not necessarily realism.

It is the magic of illusion. To capture the essence. It is my constant goal.

<a href="http://In-The-Machine.deviantart.com/art/Ink-Stamp...

In my last journal I mentioned that many artists have felt snubbed and told that oil is the only art medium of true artists. However, I did not mean to make people feel that oil painters are snobs - they are not. I know some amazing oil painters who are friends and are very open with other artists. I meant the journal as an opening to accept everyone as equals and to appreciate each other.

I have friends here who are amazing and their art is cartooning, manga, literature, photography, digital, watercolor, oil, acrylic and pencil. I think they are all worth accepting as fellow artists.

Clubs and fellowships.

   <img src="http://fc08.deviantart.com/fs21/f/2007/264/4/a/Inker_Stamp_1_by_mechangel2002.gif" width="...

Well I just wrapped up the last summer workshop class at the library and they are an amazing group of young artists. Smart, friendly and creative. I always have a little letdown when they are over.

My summer schedule with the Greater Columbus Arts Council has one more class and my college class wrapped up Saturday, so I have almost a month of vacation. I have an Inking job to complete, regular Manga classes at the Works, a mural to do prelim sketches of, a project for Oscar Garza at White Wolf and a comic story for slam bang, prep for Mid_Ohio Con, I have an Art Walk Show this Saturday, A Gallery Show coming up in October and a big show to prepare for next spring. So I guess I will be having a busy month off. HaHa.

I know people are going to object to my title, but having seen the movie, I must say that this is a very bad movie.

The mix of Michael Mann as Director with big box office draws in Christian Bale and Johnny Depp should have made this film a hit, but it failed to do so.

WHY-

Opportunities missed.
The film leaves out what could have been powerful parallels to today. Dillinger was one of many thousands out of work and unable to find work during the great depression. The banks had closed, collapsed or simply admitted they could not repay people's investments. The government protected the banks that remained and those banks, even though they needed help, refused to show mercy to the people who owed them money. The banks foreclosed on farms, businesses and homes and put thousands of people out into the street. People hated the bank. Unemployment continued to rise and many fell through the cracks, unable to get help from the National Recovery Act. (Compare to the bailouts of today) People who had stolen to eat were given hard sentences ( Dillinger got 8 1/2 years for stealing $120.00) and were not able to get help so they either stood in bread lines or turned to crime. Dillinger and others robbed banks, in part to survive and no doubt out of criminal greed. Dillinger refused to take the money of those in line in the banks and often told them, "Keep your money, I only want the bank's money." This made him a folk hero and a kind of Robin Hood.

Blatant inaccuracies.
The timelines of the deaths of Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson were wrong. Both were killed after Dillinger was dead. Dillinger was in jail in Lima, Ohio when the prisonbreak in Michigan City happened. He had planned it, but was arrested in Ohio and could not help in the break. All of Dillinger's gang escaped after the Bohemia Inn was raided. All the FBI did was kill 2 innocent 3C workers in a truck as the went to work.
The FBI did not pursue Dillinger or make him Public Enemy number one untill after he stole Lillian Holley's (the lady sheriff in Crown Point, Indiana) car and crossed state lines. Only then was Melvin Purvis put on the case.
Dillinger often conned his way into banks, claiming to work for a security company and then robbing them, not by rushing in with guns drawn like in the movie.
There is no record that Frank Nitty and the Chicago mob wanted to stop him.
His girlfriend was not tortured and Purvis did not rescue her. Purvis was short, a glory hound, was often reprimanded by Hoover and Purvis never shot Pretty Boy Floyd. Although never proven, the question arising from Floyd's death lead to the resignation of Purvis from the FBI just a few months later. The FBI was a viscious group, racist, intollerant and violent, run by J. Edgar Hoover, a closet transvestite, who used his powers to bully and scare people. (The FBI never hired an African American until after Hoover's death)
The FBI shot Dillinger in the back as he ran down an alley from the Biograph Theatre. Two hit him in the back and one hit his neck and came out under his eye. He died instantly, never saying "Bye bye, Blackbird". They also hit several innocent people in the legs and one in the butt while shooting him.
So many people loved John Dillinger that many refused to beleive he died. Almost all the wanted posters showed him without the mustache or scar so people said the man with the mustache was a fake, killed by the FBI as a fraud.
Many people at the scene soaked hankercheifs in Dillingers blood to take it with them.

So this movie missed the chance to connect with the current financial and political parallels. It failed to be accurate and gave the FBI a pass they did not deserve, all in all making this a very bad movie.

I am happy to be working, married, a father of four and holding a job. But I am a geek. I grew up as a preachers son and our church rotated pastors every 3 years so I was the new kid a lot. I was in the band, a member of the chess club and worked on the school newspsper and yearbook. I gave up my lunch money to bullies many times and went home with black eyes often. I sucked at sports, collected comic books and played D&D.
I was the weird kid in High School and never fit in. I always felt like an alien and acted out and dressed in odd clothes in school.
I still collect comics, have over 500 books on vampires, walls covered with action figures and posters - only now they are only in my studio. I have 6 computers in my home, lots of gadgets, a TV in every room and a full cabinet of Horror and sci-fi videos. I have 17 bookshelves filled with books on every subject from astronomy to zoology, fiction, history and languages. Oh, and of course I have the Klingon Language Dictionary.
I don't watch sports, dont like sports and think ultimate fighting is a disgusting indictment on humanity. I hate reality TV and consider American Idol a sign of the fall of civilization. I read 3 books a week, read comics, and go to comic conventions.
I have 4 email accounts, use both pc and mac.
I would rather spend an evening debating the flaws in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings with 2 friends who still live in their parents basement, than beers with a crowd of beautiful people at a ball game.
And in the end, geeks survive, they run businesses, create movies and build webservers. All the jocks and popular kids may rule the school, but the geek inherits the earth.

Many are shocked, sad and dismayed at the death of so many dying this last week. As far as dying goes, yep, we are all going to die. Some sooner than others and the older you get, the more people you know will die. All my grandparents, most of my aunts and uncles, over half of the celebrities I knew as a kid, 6 people I went to school with, 4 of my teachers, several of my professors and my father in law are all dead. As far as music superstars go - Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Elvis, Dwayne Allman (Allman Brothers),John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Keith Moon(the Who), Karen Carpenter, Mama Cass(Mamas and the Papas), Kurt Cobain, Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead), Freddy Mercury (Queen), Jim Morrison (The Doors), Harry Nilsson (Nilsson - also worked with the Beatles), John Lennon (Beatles), George Harrison (Beatles), Bon Scott (ACDC), Tupac, Ronny VanZant and half of the band(Lynrd Skynrd), Sid Vicious (Sex Pistols), Luther Vandros, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Joey Ramone (The Ramones), Dennis Wilson (Beach Boys), Bobby Darin, Jim Croce, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, all have died in my lifetime and those are just the more famous ones. From the time I was in eighth grade till now over 300 musicians and singers have died and most of them were under age 50 - a lot under age 40, with a third of them dying from drugs, alcohol or suicide. Other famous people that died while I was in school were JFK, Marilyn Monroe, Freddie Prinz (Sr), Sharon Tate, and ones that have died too soon in the last 20 years like River Phoenix, John Belushi, Heath Ledger, Chris Farley, James Dean, John Candy, Anna Nicole, Bruce Lee and Brandon Lee. That is why I am not as hard hit as many of you are about Michael Jackson, because it has happened so many times in my life. For many of you this is the first really big celebrity to die in your lifetime, I am sorry that it had to be someone so talented as MJ os as nice as Farrah. I don't mean to offend anyone.

I originally wrote this as a response to another journal, but I want to post it because I believe it:

While Michaelagelo is credited with genius, we should also remember it was commercial "work for hire" for Lorenzo Medici and his family. A family that bought and bribed its way into the church and had Lorenzo's son Giovanni, a non- priest made pope -(Leo X). Michaelangelo's works were often decorations for Medici crypts or chapels and Not for the pure love of the human spirit and expression.
Earlier works of the ancient world, "Winged Victory", "the Belvedere" and "Venus de Milo" were "public works" for the decoration of temples.
Hokusai and Hiroshige did Ukiyo-e for commercial block prints and pillow books. Toulouse-Lautrec's most famous works were posters for the Moulin Rouge and Follies Bergere.
It has been less than a century that the phenominon known as "art for arts sake" has existed, before that art was part of society and art was commercial, whether commissions from patrons, the church or commerce. There was no distinction of illustrator and artist, only artist. Prints were invented so that printers had something to sell to the poor who could not commission a painting. Shows, follies and circuses gave birth to the art nouveau movement. Mucha's great prints were for the sale of coffee, spirits and cigarette papers.
Diego Rivera decorated schools and government buildings, William Morris designed book covers, Frank Lloyd Wright sold houses.
The Arts and Craft Movement of the 1890's and then 70 years later, Warhol came out with the statement that everything is art, that everything is an icon and beauty and inspiration happens to each of us in different ways. There is no such thing as sacred versus secular art, no true art versus illustration, no inspirational versus sensuality - it is all art. A delicately designed font used to sell soap is as much art as "La Pieta", only our perception is different.

The Earth Wind and Fire/Chicago Concert was killer! Both bands opened on stage together, did 2 songs and then Chicago left and Earth Wind & Fire did a full show ( about an hour and 15 minutes) then Chicago did the same and then both bands came back on stage and jammed together for about 40 minutes. Hearing "September" with both bands playing was awesome and they also did "25 or 624" and it wss freakin' incredible. The concert went from 730 to 11pm.

Now I don't know if its new rules for concerts ( this was my first one in 9 years) or if its just because the average age at this show was between 40 and 55, but there were things I noticed by their absence. While we were getting our seats ( did I mention we got floor seats, center stage, only 14 rows from the stage?) there were no beach balls bouncing around,
nobody tossing frisbees and no firecrackers. There was no hint of pot floating around, no whiff of sneaking a cigarette and no fights. The encore happened automatically with no lighters held up and nobody threw anything on stage. It was like church. Now I loved the music, I had a great time, (no one hit me, puked on me or fell on me. I didn't get hit in the head with a frisbee, almost blinded by a thrown bottle or firework) but it just seemed wrong to see a concert of 70's bands but none of the feel of that 70's rebellion. I missed the defiance, the crazy fun and the danger. Ah well, I guess the times are a changing...

I met with my publisher, got my comp copies of Slam Bang #4 (Fan-atic Press, 2009) with my story in it. I sold 25 copies, sold several prints, T-shirts and made lots of contacts. I was a panelist and had a presentation on the history of Comics in Ohio. By the end of the Con, I had been interviewed for online blogs and/or videos 3 times, have 2 new contracts for stories, a possible book deal and a single panel illustration. Of course I now have 3 more deadlines to meet and a lot of work to do, but I am stoked. I have also been invited to be involved in the Columbus Cultural Arts and the Ohio Boy Scouts Art Troop. I have been invited to 3 more cons, asked about inking a book, and if I would be willing to collaborate with another artist. I have been asked to write a regular columnon art history for the Comic Related :link[link] website and keep a post thread for Ohio Artists.
Well, I am getting ready for a solo show next month at the Argyle Gallery here in Newark. The trouble is I have to create an incredible show because the show in that gallery right now is my students' from COTC and they are an amazing group of creators. The show they have put up has incredible photography, paintings and design work. I am proud to have a part in their education.

So if you can, get to the Argyle gallery this month to check out the Digital Design Student Show and be sure to come to my show at the end of February. My opening will be on Friday, Feb. 27 from 6-8pm at the Argyle Gallery 30 South 3rd Street, Newark, Ohio. Its free, open to the public and I will have food, fun and great art.

I am sitting here after a good day with my kids, but too much to drink and am now wondering if I make a difference. I try to make everyone I come in contact with feel respect and I try to teach and lead but there are days I feel like, "what have I really done?" Am I making a difference that matters? I think of every student, whatever the age as one of my children and am fiercely protective of them. Is that too much? not enough? I think of each person as some one of value and talent. I want to be a person who has made a difference in their lives. I hope I do, but somedays I wonder do I make life better for people? I guess Im just too buzzed and need to go to bed.
Happy New Year

Well, after seeing all the news on TV of people trampled to death, shooting each other and stealing toys out of the hands of children, I am truly fed up with the commercialism of Christmas.

My wife and I have decided that we are going to spend Dec. 25 working with a local deli that will be a satellite kitchen for the Salvation Army and we are going to spend the day feeding the homeless and out of work. We have asked our families to donate to charities in lieu of gifts for us this year. "This wasn't easy as I will be laid off for - edit addition - "3 weeks" ( No I haven;t lost my job, but I will have no Income from now till after New Years) until after the first of the year", but I mean to truly be part of the spirit of giving this year.

No matter what your beliefs are or what country you live in, I want to encourage everyone to do something kind this month.
Smile at someone, give to the charity of your choice, let the guy in the side road out into traffic instead of cutting him off. Help a child, give something of yourself. Donate a piece of your art to a charity auction.

Most of all take time to see what a wonderful world this is and how badly it needs to be healed by our love and friendship for each other.

Make a difference one day and one life at a time.

Merry Christmas
Happy Channuka
Happy Kwanza
Gud Yule
Feliz Navidad
Joyeaux Noel
Bon Natale
Frohe Weihnachten

It has a larger footprint so that people with older computers will have trouble waiting for it to load or operate, It is hard to locate everything and it is not esthetically better, it is ugly. After reading websites that suck and son of websites that suck, I am pretty sure this would qualify if they do another book.
I subscribe, so I can bitch, but if you are happy or unhappy and are using the free service
SHUT THE FREAK UP! You ain't paying so you don't need to tell us how wonderful it is or whine about how slow or crappy it is.
Whether I like V6 or not, it's going to happen.
