I’m probably going to get a lot of shit for this. Maybe not. I’m not nearly popular enough on DA to make waves. But I need to get it off my chest because it’s been gnawing at me for what seems like forever.

There’s an incredibly popular artist on DA. I won’t say their name/username but you might figure out who he/she is (if you do and ask me if you’re right I won’t confirm either way. This person has a scary large fan base. A few years ago I called a completely different, popular artist out directly on the issue I’m going to address below and was threatened with a reporting and banning by said artist. Lovely.)

Their work is on the front page a lot - very clean and eye catching. Their style is distinctive enough that you can tell who it is right away. Everything and anything they post gets a ridiculous amount of favs. Not going to lie, this person has a lot of talent (though not my cup of tea – too… “sterile” if that makes any sense). Very involved in one particular fandom, but has touched on others, and does a fair amount of original work too.

I throw out the word “original” lightly though as very little of their work is “original”.

They are a “ pose-jacker”, “eyeballer”, “copier” maybe another phrase I haven’t heard of. They take the work of another artist, copy the pose (and often other distinctive elements of the design), throw in different hair, eyes, outfit and call it their own.

It’s not their own, not to me anyway. To me, it’s theft. You’re not just copying a pose nearly line for line, you steal the concept, the idea. Art is more than just a pretty pose put together well skillfully. It’s the idea, the concept, the feeling that’s behind it as well. Just because you change a hair style there, an outfit here, put in a new background doesn’t make it your own.

What kills me though is they freely admit this. They don’t try to hide the fact the pose was copied. I need to go back and check their gallery but this person didn’t used to admit it – until some people started calling them out on it. But even then, no big deal to this artist, they liked the pose so… they stole it.

And that really… I want to say disgusts me but that’s strong. It’s bothersome.

It’s even more bothersome that this person’s fans… don’t care. By all the favs and positive comments it’s accepted.

That really disgusts me. It just goes to show that a pretty shiny picture gets more attention than one that maybe the coloring isn’t so hot… or the anatomy is off… but has an original pose, an original idea, has real meaning behind it. People are paying this person to steal concepts and replace their own character with it. All flock to the shiny and the meaningless nearly always…

When I first started drawing I did what this artist did A LOT. If you dig around on the internet under my old usernames before DA even existed (now I’m really showing my age) you might be able to find some of it. It’s almost all I ever did. I did try to do my own poses, my own expressions, and so on but I felt it wasn’t good enough. It wasn’t as good as what Professional Artist A, B & C did so I’d just copy their ideas, their poses, their art and lap up all the praise. But I tried to hide it – I never admitted what it really was, stealing someone else’s art. I knew deep down it was wrong. And over time I broke out of that nasty habit. Was it harder to draw without eyeballing, without stealing someone else’s work? Yes. But I learned and grew from that more than I ever could by doing what I used to do.

I’ll never be as popular as the artist above. I’ll never get as many favs, comments, praise and admiration. I’ll never have people inspired by a concept I create and have them to their own. I’ll never have people batting at my door for commission work or get the comment “I want to draw just like you” or “I wish I was as talented as you” and so on.

But in the grand scheme of things I feel I am the better artist. I will grow. I will improve. Because I don’t limit myself to what I see in front of me. You keep looking and copying the same things over and over there is nowhere to grow.

All you can do is wait and see what you can steal from someone else.

Not one thing of mine sold at the Otakon Artshow.

You know that what tells me as an artist? I fucking suck. Hell, I always knew I sucked, but hey, a crappy print of mine isn't worth $10.

I'm not reselling. None of the stuff from previous years that I attempted to resell ever did. I told the person who submitted it for me and then picked it up to do what she wants with it, I don't have room for it and I don't want to see it again. And I'm not posting the colored versions of the b&w art I posted. If you got to see it in color at the con, good for you.

That was my last Otakon artshow. And the last time I ever try to sell my artwork ever again, at a con or online, I don't care how desperate I get for cash. I've learned it won't sell, period. Hell, I could only get 1 freaking person to buy a $1 sketch commission this year, why did I think I could do better when competing with professional artists for their money?

- Dear Otakon: Art Show info please? I need to know if I need to hurry my ass up and finish up projects, or if I should chill and wait till next year. Why? ALL prices are negotiable, but please be reasonable!

Single Character Drawing
$5 USD for an uninked sketch
$10 USD for an inked sketch
$15 USD for a full color CG or colored pencil/marker

Detailed background: + $5

More than one character + $5 per extra character

What will you draw/not draw?
I'll draw fanart, original characters, and cartoon/anime portraits but please have a reference image! If you can't provide a reference image I will need a very detailed description of what you want. The more info I have the eaiser it is.

I won't draw hentai or mechs

If you're not sure if I'd be ok with drawing something, please don't hesitate to ask!

How do I pay you?
**Paypal is HIGHLY prefered for payment.** If you want to pay another way we can discuss that too.

When do I pay you?
1. If you only want an uninked sketch, you pay in full upfront. I note/email you the sketch.

Inked or color works: I sketch out your drawing and send it to you. If you approve of it, you send half the commission payment.

2. When I recieve the first half of the payment, I'll ink and/or color it. When it's finished, I will note you, letting you know it is complete. You pay the 2nd half and I upload it to DA and if requested mail it to you.

*If you would like to pay in full at anytime you are more than welcome to do so.*

When will it be finished?
I cannot give an exact date as to when I can finish a commission. Between working a full time job and having to work on other commissions/personal projects, it usually takes me a few weeks.

IF you need it by a specific date, the eariler I get your commission request the better! However I can make NO guartentees that it will be completed on time.

Can you mail it to me?
If you want me to mail you the commission piece, it will cost an extra $1 (for postage and paper).

1. Shoot for more commissions. I really enjoy doing them, and the money is nice too

Got this one done, mainly because of that $1 commission sale I had going... My $10 sale seems to be going nowhere though, so the commissions seem to be in limbo.

2. Draw more guys.

Reviewing my gallery, I did draw more guys this year. Not as much as I would have liked to though.

3. Try to move away from CG - try more traditional media (I have a bunch of cheap paint sets I bought, might as well use them)

I did a little more with colored pencil but nothing beyond that. My poor paints are sitting in my closet. I just don't have the proper material to use them (except for the boxes, see below)

4. Try to apply my work to more crafty things (i.e. stickers, mugs, etc.)

Other than the boxes and pillow this didn't happen. Granted, I have a ton of blank boxes, I just don't know what I want to put on them. I have no other ideas beyond the boxes since my stickers were a bust.

So for next year...

1. Expand my realm of fanart beyond Sailor Moon.
Sailor Moon will always have a special place in my heart, but damn it, I'm sick of drawing characters from it and I have no desire to drawn fan characters of mine (not that I have any to begin with mind you). I have 2 more sketches I want to clean up, color, and upload to DA. But after that it might be a while before you see anything from that series unless it's a redo of an old drawing, a commission, or I come up with an AMAZING idea (and with that statement, I'm sure half my watchers will remove me... ~sigh~)

2. Work on the little details
I came across a comment (off DA) that my artwork was "simple". It wasn't meant as an insult, but I felt hurt by it. I would like to have more detail in my work, though I don't know how I'll accomplish that.

Damn, I haven't updated this thing in what feels like forever

- Got a new kitten! His name is Simon Von Tiny Cat (Von paying homage to his old name). He's orange and white and is causing all sorts of trouble for our other cat, Small Cat Oscar (though Oscar isn't really small anymore!)

- My new job is going alright. I don't love it, but my boss actually gives me feedback and has expression in his voice (unlike my old boss...) so I actually have an idea of how I am doing. Which is good. I just want something stable so I don't have to worry whether I'm getting the boot or not.

- Got my Otakon 07 invoice... Even though I sold 4 out of the 5 items I put in (one got damaged during transport which is why it didn't sell) I'm still disappointed. Only one piece got over one bid, the rest were minimum. I worked really hard on one particular piece that I though would sell for a lot more. Maybe my starting bids are too low? I dunno.

- Finally started planning that little old wedding thing. We're shooting for Sunday Sept 6, 2009. It's gonna be a tiny wedding, in part because we don't have large families. That and we have no money to spend on a big wedding even if we wanted to have one My chunky butt needs to get in shape so I started playing Wii Fit again like a good girl

So the day before my move, the day I was supposed to get my benefits (including health insurance) I got fired from my job, in short, because the staff and my boss didn't like me. Did I make mistakes? Yes, but even my boss acknowledged that I was improving. But they didn't like me so I'm out of a job.

So, yeah, I'm royally screwed just having bought a house and a mortgage and all. My fiance and I will be able to get by, but barely.

I applied for about 12 or so jobs last night. I'm planning to sell a LOT of my old manga and other anime/manga related things to help bring in a little money so look for that soon.

Problem solved. The brilliant folks at Sheezy decided to do an account purge... and because another user had a SIMILAR username like mine and had signed up before I had, they brilliantly ASSUMED that they were me and just transfered their account to my username.

....WOW.

Anyway, it's fixed. I have my account back, though I'm reluctant to do anything with it. I'm so disgusted with the staff over there, the fact that they did this and obviously did not contact the users. I hope they're happy with the mess on their hands, they deserve it.

Anyway, remember the lesson here kids: When you ASSUME, you make an ASS out of U and ME.

Anyone know what twit at Sheezy I should contact to get this straighted out? And by straighted out I mean get all my artwork off that site. Forever. What a mess.

Better yet, if anyone is still on Sheezy with an account THEY CAN LOG INTO and could explain this situation for me, I'll be grateful. There seems to be NO way for non-logged in people to get in touch with the admins (genius!) I don't want to set up a separate account just to tell them what a bunch of idiots they are.

This isn't towards anyone in specific... but it's becoming a pattern that I'm not getting paid on time for my commission work by various people. I'm putting a bid on a house, I have to think about my upcoming wedding in God knows when (no we have not set a date yet), and I just don't have time to screw around putting time and effort into the work that I do and then wait for money that may or may not come.

So the update I've made is that I will not be uploading and/or sending out the final piece until I receive payment in full. I hate to do this, but I've run out of patience. Maybe I've been ignorant and too trusting all this time. ~shrug~

So my boss surprised me with a belated birthday present and she, her family, myself and my fiance to see Wicked in NYC. We had the last seats in the highest area in the last row, but I'm not going to complain, the show was awesome (and the tickets were free!) Great, amazing musical, if you ever have a chance to see it, go!

Anyway, progress on commissions are ongoing, I haven't forgotten to anyone who is waiting for one. With work, house hunting, wedding planning, lots of friends birthdays these past 2 months, working on my own personal art projects, and video games (picking up Brawl tomorrow, OMG can't wait)... yep, I've been busy If you're waiting on a commission and would like an update on how progress is going, don't hesitate to note me

After I knock some more commissions out of the way, I'll do an update on selling magnets. I have a better idea of how I'm going to sell/price them (from feedback from the poll and my own research) so expect those soonish

Is it better to try out a whole bunch of different styles and never really settle on one, or stick to one style and constantly improve on it, but never really get good at another style?

So the beginning of this year I made some "art resolutions" for 2007. Lets see how I did...

1. Draw more detailed backgrounds - as in actual backgrounds and not some abstract shapes in a pattern and what not.

I put the effort in, but not enough I think.

2. Try to avoid 3/4 face views, I draw too many damn 3/4 views!

Hahaha... no.

3. Draw more guys!

Again, the effort was there but again, I drew way more girls. I need to move out of my comfort zone. Or at least come up with more scenarios that will allow me to draw more guys.

4. Get more commissions Broke, need money. Ok, not broke, but working as a sub isn't bringing in a lot and every little bit helps.

The one thing I did right this year

5. Sell over $100 at the Otakon artshow in July (last year I made about $80 so it's not an unreasonable goal I think)

I was too ambitious and fell on my face. I barely broke even.

So for 2008?

1. Shoot for more commissions. I really enjoy doing them, and the money is nice too

2. Draw more guys.

3. Try to move away from CG - try more traditional media (I have a bunch of cheap paint sets I bought, might as well use them)

4. Try to apply my work to more crafty things (i.e. stickers, mugs, etc.)

So a lot has been going on the past few weeks...

- 99% moved into my place. Still need to clean up the bedroom a little, but other than that completely settled.

- New computer and gigantic monitor (yay I love my geeky boyfriend!)

- Work passed State Inspection, so everything is more chill, hence, I am more chill and much happier. Like, not dreading going into work every morning. Which is always a good thing.

- Got a crap ton of Wii games (either bought via a crazy sale or from my boyfriend via living in the same apartment as me ) So busy though, I haven't even tried Zac and Wiki yet That and Super Mario Galaxy is sucking my soul away.

So sometime in Nov. I'll be moving

My boyfriend and I found a great apartment. Everything has been renovated with all new floors, paint, appliances etc. It's in a great neighborhood and close to my place of work.

We've picked out furniture and already started packing. Well, my boyfriend has started packing, I'm lucky enough to have the option of leaving most of my stuff at my parent's house and ~slowly~ move it out.

So I'll be internet-less from Thursday night on as I'm shleping to the great north (NH) for my boyfriend's brother's wedding. Fun fun!

And while I'm away my dad will be brining my car around to body shops to get an estimate to fix the door. I hope it's not too much money to fix 0_o
At least I get to drive my mother's car to work until it's fixed. Which is like my car, but slightly bigger. It's big brother if you will so I hope it won't be too different to drive around.

So I went a little nutty in the craft store this weekend... well not really, but after the wedding, I'm going to experiment with printing my own iron-ons and ironing on the designs on carry bags. Hopefully it will come out well. (Maybe this could be a business venture... if there is demand for them But of course I have to see if they even come out nicely)

I also bought a plain white box to draw on. I got jealous of Australia's badass Phantom Hourglass preorder gift and then got inspired to make my own badass box But I don't know what to draw on it ;_; Give me ideas!

I've been putting an obscene amount of hours in at work (we're STILL expecting a state inspection which means everything has to be perfect at all times... I think they're never coming lol). I like my job and all, but damn, I need an extended vacation. Like, 2 months worth

I think we're closed during the holidays (x-mas to New Years)... but that's so far away ;_; And I don't get my vacation time till March ;_;

Did some very slight tweaking to my commission information - nothing major, just a little update to payment plans and added a deadline/finishing clause, just to cover my own tush

Speaking of which... 2 commissions finished 1 to go! For now anyway, I might take on a "big" project. Haven't quite decided if I'll do it yet...

As much as I enjoy doing commissions (it gives me a chance to draw things I would never think of... plus the money of course) I don't feel like I have enough time to work on my own projects.

Otakon is coming up in July and I don't feel as prepared for the art show as I would like - as of now I have 3 definite pieces I'm submitting and I'd like to have at least the max of 5. I have a sketch done for at least a 4th piece... and I have no fricking clue what else I should submit. And that's nerve racking. Yes I know the con is months away, but I got a wedding to go to the week before (which means shopping for a dress/gifts/etc. long before that) so I want everything done sooner rather than later.

I have stacks, seriously, STACKS of sketches that I've done just for me that I need to scan and color. And I keep pushing, and pushing it back because I get commission requests.

Yeah, I could stop taking commissions for a while... but I have an expensive video game habit I need to feed In all seriousness my commissions helped pay for a majority of my Wii, so the fact that I didn't have to touch my savings is a big deal. My paychecks from work are going right into paying bills and savings (I desperately need a new car and I'm planning to move out of my parents house by the end of the year) so every little bit helps. So I don't feel I can turn down commissions because I want the extra money to spend on what I want, as opposed to what I need. Yeah, that's incredibly materialistic and selfish... but it works for me for the most part. I just need to find more balance between completing commissions and finishing up my own projects.

So for those who have been paying attention, I got a new job. I don't love it (the only job I'd probably love is drawing all day but that isn't ever gonna happen ) but I like it a lot.

Where do I work? A same day surgery center. Very small, which is nice.

What do I do? I'm the human resource's manager's bitch assistant. I sat in on her giving interviews (so much better to be on the HIRING side for a change) and right now I'm catching up on missing paperwork since the state is coming in to inspect the place. I pretty much do whatever my boss (the administrator) wants me to do. There seems to be no huge rush when I'm given something to do, but I'm a fast worker anyway. Oh, and I have authority over the rest of the staff too - Whehe, power!

Most important, I don't DREAD going into work like I used to (I was a substitute teacher). It's amazing how much better it is working adults than bratty kids/preteens/teenagers (no offense to any who might be reading this of course )

What sucks is my commute (trying to get back on the highway is a nightmare) and since my day is longer it means less time for art But I'm trying to fit in as much as I can when I get home - mainly trying to get commissions done in a reasonable time (and if you're waiting for one, I'm working on them as fast as I can! I swear!)

Ooohhh, guess what I found out...

Turns out the ENTIRE con was a scam. Guy who ran it, possibly wanted by the FBI for internet fraud. All the money that was supposed to be donated to a reputable breast cancer foundation disappeared, dealers never got their money back after the last day of the con was canceled for no reason, events canceled left and right. Guests who were promised paid airfare... their flights weren't even booked. And those winners of the contest? Never got their prizes.

Haha, never thought I'd say this, but I'm glad I didn't win. I'm sorry I entered actually, after I checked out the con website (which has suddenly disappeared, as well as the email addresses for the con chairs) I knew something was up - it looked like it was thrown together in front page overnight.

Also, not all the entries were displayed and nobody was ever told which ones were and weren't... and I tried asking questions COUNTLESS times on the website running the contest - they didn't run the con and didn't supply the prizes - I was not given an answer to simple questions like, how will voting be conducted, etc. Now they're scrambling explain what happened, and are relying the the generosity of established companies/cons to make up for the loss of prizes and the lost charity money.

What a crock. No more contests for me, I'll stick to commissions where I at least get half up front for my troubles.

Ok, it's a little late but I've made some "arty" New Years resolutions. Not many, but I want them posted somewhere to remind me

1. Draw more detailed backgrounds - as in actual backgrounds and not some abstract shapes in a pattern and what not.

2. Try to avoid 3/4 face views, I draw too many damn 3/4 views!

3. Draw more guys!

4. Get more commissions Broke, need money. Ok, not broke, but working as a sub isn't bringing in a lot and every little bit helps.

5. Sell over $100 at the Otakon artshow in July (last year I made about $80 so it's not an unreasonable goal I think)
