(That's a scream of aggravation, not fear...) OK, Open Day's less than a month away, and I've got 3 costumes to prepare... Electra's got a fair bit of work still, Purse needs a fitting and maybe alterations, and Krupp -well, need to start on Krupp next week. I have drawn up my schedule, it's very organised and do-able.

UNTIL the essential foundation garment that all the pieces attach to DISAPPEARS!!! Seriously, not funny. It's bright blue and sparkly, very hard to miss. I've turned my room inside out, checked throughout the house - simply cannot continue without it, and replacing it would be a headache as I've nearly run out of fabric. So I spend a couple of hours hunting... a couple more hours feeling miserable and depressed, playing Sims... then decide to look in the REALLY stupid places for it. Such as, under the duvet on the spare bed... amongst the clean linen... in the stationery cupboard... ok, well, how about the other stored costumes? Purse? no... Wrench? no.... Volta? BINGO.

Electra's jacket was folded underneath the Volta costume.

this. is. not. funny.

Still, now I have it, and I've only lost about 5 hours of working time and have to go run errands before the shops close...

In other news, Boush has hiccups. But that doesn't stop him jumping up and trying to climb into my shoulder, pressing his nose into my ear. I can feel the delicate point of a goofy canine against me earlobe. And now it's up there, I'm pimping it out for anyone to read!

The subject is the costume designs of the musicals Cats and Starlight Express, how they're put together, what makes them work. It's not too academic, and hopefully, pretty easy to read - there's pictures, but no conversation. Unfortunately I had a tight word-count, and went over it with this, so there's plenty of material I didn't cover here, but perhaps the ideas I do explore will get you thinking with other areas.

If you like the Jellicle Cats or our favourite roller-skating trains, and you got a few minutes to fill, please read?
Having not had a competition in August, I've nearly forgotten to start one this month!

Simple competition - paint a face. Face Painting. Makeup!!! Copy a makeup design from Starlight Express, take a photo, send it to me by the 24th September. I'll put them up both on [link] and on a page on my site [link] as I receive them. from 24th to 1st October (see what I mean about forgetting? sorry!) I shall accept votes for your favourite makeup via Private Message on [link] The winner will be announced after, and will probably get a prize!

Rules: Official characters only please. If you're inspired to create a makeup design for your fan-character, please do share, but not for this competition. Also consider what makeup designs are impressive - Dinah, bless her, is never in the same league of artistry as Volta. Think what will make your makeup stand out and get a vote over the others!
Accessories - wig, costume, set, etc, are welcome, but not necessary.
Any type of makeup is fine, whatever works for you...
The design needs to be recognisable, but not a slavish copy of any one photo. Take liberties, make it personal!
It does not need to be your face that you paint - the artist is the entrant, not the model.
Finally, I reserve judgement on limiting the number of Caboose entries. We all love the evil little guy, but if you CAN do something else, please do! If I've got 6 cabeese pics and nothing else, I might ask you to do another design.

Send me a GOOD quality headshot, please! No dimly lit webcam images - show us the details, the colours, your artistry.

So... upload here, email me on belle_pullman@yahoo.com, message me on [link] post on the thread there, whatever you feel like! But please, ENTER!

Welcome to the Great July Fan Fiction Competition! The game's simple - write us a short story, don't break the rules, and the story with the most votes wins.

Dear Diary...

RULES:

The format of the story must be diary entries, as written by one of the characters in Starlight Express. It can be one entry or several entries into the diary.

Each person can enter up to two stories.

DO NOT PLAGARISE - don't copy someone else's work. (you are allowed, if you want, to describe the races we see in the show.)

Keep it family-friendly. No graphic sex or violence. You may imply such things took place, but not describe them.

Length - I don't want to set a definite word count, it can be as short or long as you feel it needs to be to tell your story. But keep in mind that the voters will be reading these stories, and you only have 3 weeks to write it, so no novels please!

To define Starlight Express Characters - the diary must be written from the viewpoint of a Canon StEx character - that means any who have appeared onstage in a professional production. Belle, Caboose, Krupp, Rocky 4, all fine. For this competition, please do not use created characters. The competiton is writing about the real characters!

Entries in English only please... My German friends, please don't let this put you off, you're free to ask for help in translating if you like!

erm... I think that covers everything?

To enter, please send me an email to belle_pullman@yahoo.com with the story as an attachment. I will then code it into a html page and put it up on Belle's Domain (assuming my computer will oblige...) for everyone to read. You can also post them on the forum.

Entries must be sent by 23rd July. After which, votes can be sent by PM through the forum to me by 30th July, and then I'll announce the winner!

Any questions, suggestions, pointing out the bloody obvious mistake, please ask...

It's been so quiet around here...

Basically I'm not dead yet! I've not added anything here for ages, it seems... this summer my creative energies have very much been focussed on updating my website. If you ever want reference photos for Starlight Express - I have THOUSANDS! I've nearly completed the on-going project of scanning or re-scanning at high resolution every photo in every brochure from StEx that I own, and I'm 1 1/2 brochures away from finishing! yaaaaay!

Just in time too, as a week tomorrow I get the keys to my new "flat". This is my new place, in a FABULOUS location not 5 minutes from my new college. It's in a beautiful Victorian mansion, on a quiet, leafy backstreet. My room is a shoebox. It contains bed, wardrobe, kitchen unit, fridge, ovenette, sink, cupboards. I'm up in the attic, up two long flights of stairs. There's shared bathrooms on the floor below.

As I'll be lucky to fit myself and a pair of shoes in the room, needless to say I am NOT planning on taking my scanner and brochure collection with me! I will have laptop, but I don't know if I'll have any regular internet access, so updates here are likely to be relatively few too. I will post up any fun college work tho! Otherwise, I'll be online when I'm home, which is likely to be fairly often, college is only just out of reasonable commute time (1- 1.5 hours). So I'm not falling off the face of the internet, just won't be online all night anymore!

###Belle###

Why the hell am I going to college to study costume construction... persuing a CAREER, dedicating my working like to costume construction... when I'm SOOO BAD at it?

ok, background... on saturday morning we fly out to germany for the Starlight Express open day. I'm going with Mazz (and Jared, hopefully, he has not yet got a passport.......) I'm making Mazz an Ashley costume (And Jared a Rocky....) we've had this booked for about a month, but with college work, chronic fatigue and overall inertia, I've only really been working on the Ashley this past week, and bullying Mazz and Jared into making a start on the Rocky.

Everything that possibly CAN go wrong, seems to have gone wrong, as far as my making CRAP decisions goes. machinery is all working fine (kisses the wood....) but my brain is very much absent. I've made every dumb mistake possible, un-picked AT LEAST once every seam I have sewn... wasted half the fabrics in getting stuff wrong... wasted 3/4 of the precious TIME in unpicking and re-sewing.... I'm getting stressed.

Stress causes insomnia. I've been getting about 3 hours sleep the past few nights, now we're into the final week before leaving. This means I make more mistakes than before! I've spent the past hour unpicking the seams of the sleeves of the leotard, as I need to completely re-do them. at least once the bits are re-done for the 2nd or 3rd time, they do look good... this will end up a unique and interesting Ashley. In a couple of months' time.

As for poor old Rocky - Mazz made the base unitard the other day, she and Jared painted it up this afternoon... I've heat-set it as well as possible on lycra (using heat sufficient to properly set the paint on lycra gives you crispy toasted catsuit) He may end up having the crappy old accessories I made him 4 years ago!!! Alternatively I might make him a very small pair of gold shorts and spray his skates to match.

So... we leave for germany on saturday morning. The actual open day is Tuesday 12th. We arrive home weds 13th. friday 15th Mazz and I both have a singing exam. Mazz has a dance exam on thursday 14th. Then I go into hospital, for a general anaesthetic and a cortisone injection into my bad shoulder on the 18th July. Last time I had a cortisone injection, christmas before last, the joint locked completely for 4 days, leaving me in absolute immobility and AGONY, then it calmed down to 6 weeks of pain such that I could not use my right arm... then it returned to normal levels of discomfort. SOMEHOW the specialist thinks that giving me a general anaesthetic first will mean this doesn't happen again. I sure hope he's right, or else I have a very unpleasant summer ahead of me. It should, at least, calm down in time for me to go to college in september, to study costume construction, which at this point I'm beginning to regret!!!

Life sucks. Then you die.

*scream*

it's 1.20am, and I'm far too stressed to sleep. JOY. WHY the hell do I choose to do this???

###Belle###

Saw StEx in Oxford on friday night, HELL traffic getting there, arrived 2 hours late; ie, JUST as the show was beginning, without time to check into hotel.

The performance was really good - Star of the night award goes to Mykal Rand as Electra, with his ad-libs! I've never laughed so much at the show in my life- and all laughing with, not at. All intentionally funny. Mykal put in so many little touches of character, petulant foot-stompings, backchat, he's so expressive! My favourite tho is "You think *I* could be converted to Steam? woo hoo." SOOO Sarcastic!
There's still a lot of direction that I'd like to see done differently, and SO much I'd like to do with the costumes.... but overall, I love the show!

###Belle###

Ahhhh, life is good! I have a delicious selection of choolates, a new scanner/printer and a flatscreen monitor awaiting set-up, and an assured future!

Had Interview at Croydon College this afternoon. Now, it depends if, and what, you've heard about the college as to how you'll react. Basically, Croydon's a pretty rough, big town just 4 miles from home, the college is big, pretty rough. But they have a brilliant technical theatre dept, with an excellent reputation.

Compared to Central School of Speech and Drama (primarily a Drama school, also with a good tech dept, who have offered me a place conditional on the grades I get on the course I'm on), Croydon's got smaller facilities, fewer opportunities to work on productions, but they are closer, and offer a two year course, not three year, and they gave me an unconditional offer. Basically, they'll take me whatever. And their students all get work in theatre. Central has big shiny new building, a LOT of practical work, a three year course (I'd rather be out and working soon as possible really) but it's the far side of london, will involve moving into student flat, less secure, and a man had his head chopped off by a mad axe-man round there yesterday.

And I still have three colleges who haven't interviewed me yet! As it stands, I'll go to Central, unless I don't get the grades they need, in which case I'll go to Croydon. Rose Bruford, Wimbledon and London university of the Arts will have to offer me something REALLY special to better the two offers I currently have.

AND I have a new personal sketchbook, and some gorgeous reference photos to add to it... Robbie Williams in a dress, and a behind-the-scenes article on the GORGEOUSLY LUSH new TV adaption of Casanova!
It's just so amazingly, gorgeous LUSH! the calories in those costumes- OMG, they are just gorgeous! the colours! the shapes!
Uploaded a couple of scraps - part of the course I'm doing includes a Community Art Project. Myself and two other students are decorating this little room in the children's hospital. It's really been a group effort on the design and everything, we've painted the room a pale lilac, with white below the window level. It's very calm and serene in the very small, dark room. Then on the blank wall we've got a big mural of double doors looking out onto this beach, which Anthony is painting, Ashley is muralising himself and his skateboard, and I, being the girl, get to paint the dolphins requested by the kids who use the room.
So, I've done my research, found a load of other dolphin murals, and dolphin photographs to use as source material. And I've sketched the group of dolphins I'm painting, which is the first scrap. The second is what I got done on tuesday afternoon- sketched out the shapes on the wall in chalk, sponge-painted the white background, obliterating the sketch lines in the process, then redrew the shapes on the wet paint, gave up and let the paint dry, sketched again, then blocked the shapes in dark-ish turquoise.
So now I got to practice the details I want to put over the shapes, especially the top righthand Dolphin, before we go back to the hospital on friday.
Once we've got the murals done, all that's left is to do wood-effect panels on the white border at the bottom. Then we're done!

WHY does my hairdryer smell of garlic?

I'll be 24 a week today. And the following day is Valentine's day. I get so depressed this time of year, because it could be the most fabulous time - romantic dinners, made to feel special... but no. Have I ever received a valentine? No. Has anyone ever bought me flowers? No. Will I be miserable again this year, smiling as my friends get lovely presents and treated to fantastic romantic nights out? Yes... because I genuinely am happy for them. Doesn't mean I'm not jealous tho. I've got a lovely singing voice, and nice hair. I'm the nice personality, responsible one... *sigh*

What have I acheived in my 24th year on the face of the earth? Well. Recovered from a lot of pain in my shoulder... got a fair amount of college work done (not sure if it's enough to pass the course yet, tho, still loads outstanding) What else? Got out to Florida in September, spent time with RB... survived the hurricanes... Had councilling to try to deal with my phone phobia, which has been a qualified success. I'm more confident, more sure of myself, and can deal a bit better with phones, but still don't like using them! I haven't reached my goal, which was to be able to ring up a friend and chat. I can cope with doing banking stuff by phone tho, so practically it's an improvement.
What else? I didn't get to the Open day this summer, but did see Starlight Express in germany in April, and the UK tour in November. Cats tour closed, but will start again in a few months. I've totally lost my interest in the london production of We Will Rock You. They've pissed about with it too much.

It's pretty much exactly a year since I started using Devart properly, too.

I've got my first college interview tomorrow afternoon, and it's for the course I REALLY want to do.

If I get this place, I'll be studying 4 miles from home. It's a 2 year, not 3 year course (which is good! I can't stand being a student for another 3 years!) Apparently, the place (croydon college, hardly the highest ranks of society, but still) has plenty of industry respect...

However, they are altering the course from the prospectus I saw, so presumably they'll run that by me tomorrow. I'm mainly nervous about presenting my portfolio. I've never (successfully) gotten anywhere through my costume making, so I've gotta try to avoid going "yeah, well, like, there's my photos. that's what I did." 'cos that won't get me anywhere!

I've got my photos in a big photo album, all my costume sketches are cut and pasted and mounted into a black sketch book (they were in about 4 different sketch books and on note paper, a right mess!) and I've got a folder full of my costume references, print-outs etc. However I've only mounted four costumes onto design boards with fabric samples etc. I'm showcasing Tutu Pearl, Rustie, Electra and Killer Queen. I've got best part of a month until my second interview, so will get more presented by then.

But Croydon's where I really want to go!

Then on friday, I've got two hospital appointments to see people about the upcoming surgery on my shoulder. My main worry is the recovery time- I've got to get these college interviews presented well, I've got to finish the course I'm on, I've got to do the Final Project which is overall 1/6 of the course over about 6-8 weeks I think, starting in March. My operation date's end of February. If my shoulder's gonna mean I'm unable to write, draw or paint for more than 2 weeks, well... you see my problem. But if I postpone it, the likelihood is that I don't get another date until september, october, when HOPEFULLY I'll be starting a new course. Equally no good. Only solution is if I can get a surgery date end May/early June, then I'll have a miserable summer, but will at least be able to work my academic life.

Anyone got any cheerful news? feels like ages since anyone's spoken to me. Still, until friday afternoon, I'm unlikely to be making much sense, so maybe just as well.

On another note, what do people think of subscribing to Deviantart? it's not too expensive, and looks like you get some cool features... but the advertising doesn't particularly bother me as is. Is it worth the money?

Basically, there's a simple function I want to be able to do, and that is the computer equivalent of photocopying onto Acetate. I want to take a black and white image, and as a layer, convert the white to transparent, and leave the black, and ALSO convert the greyscale to partial transparency... so this layer then can be superimposed over colour, or another image, or whatever.

Thought it was about time I updated this.

Yeah, Sims 2 is out, and it's partly very good. the graphics are BEAUTIFUL, it's fully 3D, gorgeous lighting, just nice. The clothing is fairly limited in meshes, but infinitely customisable in colours and holes. Fairly wide range of hairstyles too. Course, me being me, I can't just take what's there, I gotta try to apply it to create something else- ie. musical theatre characters. And there's never the right hairstyles, length of skirt, etc. So everything's a bit approximate for now. However, Maxis have said they're going to release a tool that allows users to customise objects, and hopefully meshes too.
Downside of the game- the play is kinda slow, each day takes forever. Which is good when your characters only have 20-odd days as an adult, but bad when you've turned the aging off and you're trying to do stuff! takes so long! Gets boring. Still, the beautiful graphics make up for it.

I've got a bunch of homework for college to do this summer. I've not been getting on with it. So now I'm kinda panicking a bit! So... to make me feel better, I'm going to inflict my essays on any poor hapless readers of this!

Firstly: Surrealism. 1/2.

SURREALISM

The Surrealism art movement was born from the research into the human mind led by Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, who discovered that there are three parts to the human mind- The Conscious, the individual unconscious, and the collective unconscious. While the conscious mind deals in words, the unconscious expresses itself through images in dreams and visions. In order to explore the unconscious mind, it is necessary to not judge or condemn the unconscious images, but to explore them both verbally via the conscious mind, and graphically to access the unconscious more directly.

The Collective unconscious is understood to be ideas and thoughts common to all humans, instinctive reactions such as fear of large predators, for a simple example. It directs the emotions and decisions of every person's life. Each element of the collective unconscious is known as an "Archetype" which is defined not in itself, but by its effects.

Surrealist artists found these concepts fascinating, and explored both their individual unconscious and also expressing images from the collective. They accepted that the messages from the unconscious mind were important and relevant, and that the mind needs to be in touch with these messages. Through their art, they tried to express the abstract in terms of the material world. Objects are used as metaphors for the workings of the subconscious, in order for the resulting artwork to be analysed and understood. Surrealist paintings often defy the logic of the conscious mind, yet resonate strongly to the unconscious through the metaphotical imagery of the collective mind.

DALI : “The difference between me and the Surrealists is that I am Surrealism.”
Timeline
11th May 1904: Born in Figueres, near Barcelona in the catalan region of Spain, to a successful family.
Spent childhood summers at holiday home in Cadaques. Lived most of his life in villa in Port Lligat. 1921, Studied at San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts, Madrid. Expelled in 1923 and jailed for political agitation and disturbing the peace.
Early Period (1910 - 1927): mainly landscape painting of his home regions, which influence later work. Evidence of the influences of Impressionism, Cubism, Realism and historical studies in dutch Baroque.
First exhibition held in 1925, international recognition in 1928, when three paintings exhibited in "Carnegie International Exhibition", Pittsburgh, USA.
Transitional Period (1927 - 1928): period of great experimentation. Textures in paint such as resins, sand and gravel, collage including cork and rocks etc. Subject matter became an exploration of the Taboo. beginnings of awareness os the Parisian Surrealists. Style often abstract and grotesque, influenced by Joan Miró, Picasso and Braque.
1929, solo exhibition in Paris, led to joining the Paris Surrealist Group. Met Gala Eluard, married in 1934, first travelled to America that year. Gala hugely influential, inspiring and appearing as his only model in many works.
Surrealism (1929 - 1940): Ultra-realistic, photographic style of painting images from his unconscious mind. Dali's work becomes representative of the movement- in particular "The persistence of Memory" (1931) - the famous Melting Pocket-watches. Politics devided him from the Surrealist group by 1934.
"Paranoiac critical-method" for creating "hand-painted dream photographs" from subconscious desires and urges brought into graphic realisation through hallucinations.
1937, "Swans, reflecting Elephants".
Classic (1941 - 1989): Inspired by classical and Renaissance art, and 1950s technological advances. Left Surrealism behind to develop a more general, broad artistic style. Combining science, faith and mysticism. Remarkable craftsmanship and detail in his work. Also produced films, jewellery and theatre sets and costumes, and writings; poetry, fiction and an Autobiography, "The Secret Life of Salvador Dali." Catholicism was a major influence in his later works.
1940-1948, lived in America, escaping war.
1982, Gala died, Dali's health declined, lived a recluse until death in Figueres, 1989, from heart failure.
