        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ May's Bird of the Month is the Ostrich<br />Order: Struthioniformes, Family: Struthionidae<br /><br />Chosen by :devGarfield428: for placing third in the Bird Interactions art contest!<br /><br />The Ostrich (Struthio camelus) is either one or two species of large flightless birds native to Africa, the only living member(s) of the genus Struthio, which is in the ratite family.         <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ April's Bird of the Month is the Heron<br />Order: Pelecaniformes, Family: Ardeidae<br /><br />Since we had an Egrets journal posted in November, please refrain from submitting Egrets to this BOTM. We would like to give the rest of the Heron family the spotlight!<br /><br />The herons are long-legged freshwater and coastal birds in the family Ardeidae. The herons are medium to large sized birds with long legs and necks. They exhibit very little sexual dimorphism in size. The necks are able to kink in an s-shape, due to the modified shape of the sixth vertebrae. The neck is able to retract and extend, and is retracted during flight, unlike most other long-necked birds ]]></media:text>

        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ Scavenger birds are opportunistic eaters - they aren't picky when it comes to eating carrion! The most well-known scavenging birds are the vultures. In fact, New World vultures are even called "Cathartidae" because they are known for cleansing the environment of decaying carcasses. However, other birds scavenge too. Eagles, hawks, some owls, some gulls, ravens, crows, magpies, and the marabou stork all can't say no to a free meal. There is even one species of parrot that scavenges - the kea!         <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ July's Bird of the Month is the Peafowl<br />Order: Galliformes, Family: Phasianidae<br /><br />Suggested by :devarabianwolflove:<br /><br />Peafowl are two Asiatic species of flying birds in the genus Pavo of the pheasant family, Phasianidae, best known for the male's extravagant eye-spotted tail, which it displays as part of courtship. The male is called a peacock, the female a peahen, and the offspring peachicks. The adult female peafowl is grey and/or brown. Peachicks can be between yellow and a tawny colour with darker brown patches. Toss up some ideas in the comments area, and then we'll hold a poll tomorrow. Boobies are closely related to the gannets (Morus), which were formerly included in Sula. Boobies hunt fish by diving from a height into the sea and pursuing their prey underwater. Facial air sacs under their skin cushion the impact with the water. Boobies are colonial breeders on islands and coasts. However, despite the time that has passed, the repercussions of the oil spill are still being felt by wildlife at all levels of the food chain, as well as by humans. While it was not intentional, our Themed Week, Birds and Sea, is well-timed. It showcases some of the beautiful species that we can work together to protect. Sea birds are affected by the oil spill because the oil soaks into their feathers, taking away warmth and buoyancy.
