I LOVE HAVING A MEAL PLAN AND ON CAMPUS HOUSING!

there is a wicked comic book joint within walking distance of my dorm, so its probably my new favorite place in this town. also, there's an art supply store downstairs from the place... HELL YEAH.

so, question time (as usual)! what kind of comics do you guys read/whats your taste in comics?
i really read basically anything with panels and art that appeals to me, haha. technically, i read American, Japanese, Korean, and Canadian (LOL) comics. genre-wise, everything from superheroes to bubbly shoujo to just... weird.
i will honestly buy a comic book simply based on the art/general pacing, just because i like to look at different techniques and paneling styles. i can see myself taking a course here in college just because I loooove seeing the difference in comic styles from author to author, or from culture to culture. its just really cool to me, hahaha.

i really, really cannot read comics that have art i don't like, regardless of the story. its kind of sad, but if its a comic i think i need to like the art, you know? i can understand that certain styles suit certain comics, but if the art is just BAD (to me), i can't do it. e.g. i will never be able to read a CLAMP series. i'm sorry, i just absolutely cannot stand their art, to the point where i can't enjoy the rest of the comic.

i like comics with strong, independent female characters, but my favorites are the ones with young male leads (this is actually true for me with books, too). i think its fun to see how authors portray that character-type, especially in different genres and situations. so i love the charismatic ones, the cowards, the jerks... they're all pretty cool to me.

and... i secretly love romantic comedies. i've reread Lovely Complex and High School Debut a bunch of times. actually, i love anything Aya Nakahara publishes hahaha. her stuff is so fantastic

i can't stand comics where the main characters are losers... and i mean in the sense that, this isn't really a gag comic, its for serious, but the side characters are more interesting than the main one.
and i really despise the girl comics where the lead girl is pathetic and can't do anything without thinking about the studly guy she's lusting after. like, seriously, you have a pair of god damn legs, use them to support yourself for god's sake.
... b-but i love Kimi ni Todoke. i don't think it fits into the category i just mentioned because Sawako really is trying her hardest, and she's being supported by her own determination and her friends... its a really cute series ;_;

yeah but I'm more or less moved in, here in my dorm. i still have to put up posters and put my shit on my shelves, but its pretty good so far. classes don't start until Monday, though, so i'm kind of bored out of my mind, gahaha.
plus, there are a few major problems that i have been having:

1: Windows 7 is being a bitch (to be fair, it is just the beta...)
2: Windows 7 isn't picking up my scanner and i have to wait for my parents to mail me the CD which i... conveniently left at home...
3: Photoshop is fucking shit up.

i actually attempted to use ImageReady instead of Photoshop (because for some fucked up reason ImageReady works...), but its a little awkward.
but at least i have installed my tablet and printer!!! although my tablet is acting a little weird with this new driver i downloaded and my printer does not really do anything other than... print...
also the tablet being overly sensitive does not help with how weird it is to use ImageReady for coloring shit. i'm sure i can figure out the sensitivity problem, but like i said, new driver thing... not really completely sure how to use it, haha.

i'm curious about how people pick the colors for their pictures. i think 60% of the time i spend coloring a picture is spent trying to pick decent colors. i usually just end up throwing colors around until they look good, gahaha. yes, i am the prince of efficiency.
another thing is, i spend A LOT of time cruising image boards and saving pictures that have compositions/colors/etc that i like... and sometimes when i color, i bring up maybe four of them and use them for color pallets. is that... cheating? or what? i just never thought about it until now, i guess.

so I kind of need money for a few different things. mostly books, and also... I kind of can't afford to go to college gahaha. WOOOOO SCHOLARSHIPS... I hope OTL
I'm mostly looking at my text books which are going to cost a ton not good, gahaha.
the past two summers I've been working in an office, but since this will be the last summer I have as a high school student, I wanted to try and spend more time with my friends before heading off to... wherever I'm going. an office job does not really help with that kind of thing _{(I was basically an even worse social recluse last year than I usually am. the only friends i saw on purpose were my friend Julie and... my brother).
... also, I sort of had a mental breakdown last year at work HAHA oh man.}

the deal is basically, $10 dollars for a full colored commission. MAN IS THAT CHEAP OR WHAT.
....... that is actually less than I would make at my office job, but its both a) more productive, and b) more fun.

this is also because... recently I have had a sudden burst of confidence when it comes to art. not so much, MAN I CAN DRAW! as much as, WOW I actually ENJOY drawing. that doesn't happen very often and I kind of want to take advantage of it

hm okay so this is sort of weird.

OKAY HERE'S THE SCENARIO:
so say you're with your friends looking at clothes or something, and your one friend is like, "oh try on this _______~!"
and you look at it and you're like, "there is no way that would look good on me."
... but your friends are all bugging you about it because they think you should wear it.
you ask two of your um... guy friends their opinions on the subject (because they are MEN AND THEY WOULD OBVIOUSLY KNOW WHAT TO DO IN THESE SITUATIONS LMAO).
so Guy A goes, "are you kidding? you would look great in it!"
and Guy B goes, "you should just wear what you want!"

SO THE QUESTION IS...
which do you appreciate more? Guy A thinking you'd look good, or Guy B thinking you shouldn't let people pressure you into things?

I actually honestly have no idea why I am asking this.
recently I've been running almost shoujo-esque situations through my head for... various reasons. this one came up and I realized I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I THOUGHT WOULD BE BETTER, GAHAHA. I'm leaning towards free-will boy, but being told you'd look good would still be hella fabulous.

because i am very close to starting one.
it'll be about Jaejin and his sidekick companion, Nao (aka mole boy ahahaha). i guess the genre would be like... horror/action/mystery/comedy. mostly action and comedy, probably. because i am so bad at writing mysteries LOL. _{hopefully i'll be able to work on that, though...}
i guess, genre-wise, you could compare it to... shounen, leaning more towards seinin. because man that is just HOW I DO.

it would probably be hosted on smackjeeves or something, because i'll be damned if i'm going to buy a website gahaha. plus man, coding sites for comics is a bitch, seriously; i could probably make my friend do it for me but i am too lazy for that, even.

don't expect this to come around any time soon, since i'm still writing certain parts and working out a ton of kinks (like Nao's character design - GOD DAMN WHY IS HIS HAIR SO HARD FOR ME TO DRAW). if anything, I'd say you'd have to wait until at least June for it to start.
for the record, though, i'm super excited about it. writing Jaejin is an adventure because he's so weird. and you know, sort of evil/antagonistic... and Nao is probably the most distrubingly human character i've ever dealt with. they make such a whack duo, its fantastic.

ETA// YEAH I FORGOT TO MENTION. format wise, it will be a lot like Gunnerkrigg Court (which is awesome, fyi) in that it will sort of build up an overall plot line, but the arcs/chapters will be able to stand on their own. this is just because i can't write a 200+ chapter long story that is BUILDING UP TO THE SUPER SHOWDOWN!!! at the end. its just impossible, hahaha.

does anyone have any interesting myths/urban legends to share? or strange unsolved happenings?
for an example, I've already got Jack the Ripper and the Zodiac killer on my list of "unsolved stuff"; I put Robin Hood on my.... uh, "interesting historical characters" list; but I'm severely lacking in good urban legends.

and when I say good, I mean not big foot/etc.

I'm asking because I need them for a project that I'm working on. so, I need unsolved/mysterious things to use that I can "solve" by drawing my own conclusions by inserting fictional characters. IT WILL BE COOL I SWEAR.
e.g. I've already worked out Jack the Ripper BUT I THINK THAT WAS EXPECTED, since I am... disturbingly fascinated with him. yes.

I CAN'T DRAW RIGHT NOW.
my pinky on my dominant hand was injured, so its really hard to hold a pencil. and even if i can find a way to do it comfortably, I can't keep my hand down on a table for too long, or else too much blood flows to my finger and it HURTS A LOT.

thankfully, the doctor says it should heal on its own in a week or two
but until then, I'm probably going to be dead. maybe I'll post more weird doll pictures. WHO KNOWS.

its not the usual, "oh, i feel like nothing i draw is up to my standards" situation.

i just don't really get along with my art. you know, in the sense that... i can't stand being around it. think of me and art as the crotchety old couple next door who have been married for eons but should have been divorced two months after the wedding and spend every waking moment pissing each other off.
i hate art in the sense that i like doing it, but i hate spending time on it (btw i am never going pro or going to art school. ever)
so i guess i'm basically tsundere for my art... or something


really what i'm trying to say is, i have art ADD. i can't focus on one picture for extended periods of time, which usually results in nothing that i feel is worthwhile to post!

i LOVE doing concept sketches, though. i do lots of sketches/doodles, and i'd spam you with those, but i feel like people would be annoyed by that/wouldn't be interested hahaha.

i think the only time i would ever finish a full piece is if it were for someone else. birthdays, special occasions, and money are great inspiration, hahaha.

I have a job, but recently I've had to take off a lot because I need to be home for different reasons.

BASICALLY, I owe my mom $240, I need to buy something that will cost around $200 dollars (maybe more?), I'm probably about to buy something that will cost me around $480, and I'm already thinking ahead to having to buy Christmas presents and conventions.

AND RIGHT NOW I HAVE... something like $690 dollars. minus about $40 dollars because I just had to buy something.

yeah, so I do actually have a job... but I'm not sure how much longer I'm working there, and [for now] I don't have a job during the school year.

SO THE REAL QUESTION IS...
should I do commissions? because thats really all I can think of doing right now :/ (I'm actually VERY CLOSE to selling some of my dolls)
I think, from just guessing, a CG would be like $20-25, and then everything else would be some amount under that.
I'm mostly worried about a source of income during the school year because a) my parents don't do allowance, b) I'm going to be trying to focus on studying harder this year, so less free time for working, c) I have to go to college next year... KIND OF SCARED OF LACK OF MONEY HAHA.
(my current employers offered to let me keep working during the school year, but its an hour commute to get there and back, so... time wise, its not really possible)

... I actually really wanted to sell keychains, but I don't even have enough money to fund that project, hahaha

so like, the obvious solution is STOP BUYING THINGS BLACKII, but, yeah, I have hobbies and I have things that I want to buy, so uh.

1. I'm extremely indecisive at the worst times. I like to live in the moment, but whenever I'm doing something useless I can never make up my mind, haha.

6. I have a low milk tolerance because of psychological issues (ROFL its sad because its true).

7. People consider me "insensitive" because I have a hard time dealing with other peoples' issues. BUT REALLY IT IS TIME TO THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE.
I have lots of work this summer.
not only do I have to draw (WHAT WHO DOES THAT ANYMORE), I have to work on comic shit. because... Cabaret is going to be a comic and there's nothing you guys can do about it. please excuse me and my MASSIVE cast of characters OTL

also next year I am teaching a course on the history of organized crime. so this summer I have to spend a lot of time picking out books and working on the curriculum and shit. its going to be rad! but its also going to be a lot of work. totally worth it, though.

AND THEN I NEED A REAL JOB. my options so far are:

a) office work. I did this last year, my pay was something around eight dollars an hour. I'm thinking I'll be scanning files into the computer and doing random odd jobs for them (like I did last year). its HELLA boring, but I play my DS during the slow periods so its okay gahaha *worst employee ever* also the people there are really rad and sometimes my dad stops by to do crazy techie things.
and I get my own cubical *w*
PRO: I'm used to it, I know the people there, I get to play DS while I'm on the job (lol)
CON: Hella boring like you wouldn'y believe, I might have to deal with a really awful and tedious youth network trying to make me join their cult and spend my mornings at their temple of unholy lameness. also kind of restricted dress code (SHUSH I LIKE MY FUNKY CLOTHES)

b) CAMP COUNCILOR. my history/english teacher offered me a job at his mosque (yes, where the muslims hang out) as a camp councilor at some summer program they're doing. the pay is ten bucks an hour, Monday through Friday afternoons. I guess I'd be doing... generic councilor things? I'm not sure what kind of summer program it actually is. there probably isn't much out doorsy things, since its in the middle of the city.
normally I'd say no because I'm not so great with kids, but I spent a month teaching art in January, and since I'm going to probably go into teaching, its a good experience to go through.
the only massive issue is the place. its in West Philly, and if any of you know Philadelphia, you know thats... kind of dangerous. AND far from my home. so i actually don't know how to get there rofl.
PRO: more pay!, I'd be with my teacher (who I'm co-teaching my mafia course with), teaching experience
CON: far from home, kind of dangerous, dealing with kids, being in a religious place all day (I'd probably offend a lot of people), trying to handle a religious culture that I'm really not used to!

SO what do you guys think? because personally I have no idea which one to go with @w@

1. i like children a lot, both girls and boys (lol mostly boys, little girls can be assholes). lolol that sounds so wrong, but i think they're so cool. they're so energetic and fun to observe. i'm talking age 7-12, because i think that is srsly the best time of your life. unless you had some serious pedo issues or something as a kid, that would totally suck.

2. i have dreams (sleeping and day dreaming) about torture. LOL WHAT THE HECK. i'm so not a masochist, but i always get stuck thinking about torture scenes. my [boy] characters are all the same because they all eventually get tortured. SO LAME.

3. i have secret fantasies about wearing rainbow skirts and shirts and old school 50s dresses during the springtime. damn i wish i were man enough to actually wear those.

4. i'm the class pimp in my grade. thats... all you need to know about that.

5. i HATE my coloring style. the colors are way too saturated and ugly. i like pictures that use pastel colors, but i have yet to master the art of using them.
