Barenaked Ladies Contest - Effin' Spec Work

For anyone who hasn't already seen this - [link]

Here is what I have to say about it (copied from my comment on the actual contest news article):

"Another cheapshot at Graphic Design...

I'm all for contests and stuff for charity, but BNL will be selling this shirt on tour stops and making fistfuls of cash off of it and the designer get's $1000 is cash and prizes...

Getting people to do design work first, then picking your favorite is an unethical practice and cheapens the entire design profession. And as musicians who struggled a little when they first entered the scene, I'm surprised that they would run anything like this to art and the art community.

As a member of R.G.D. Canada I cannot morally participate in this contest, and if anyone else is serious about the profession of Graphic Design, please review this site (www.no-spec.com) before entering.

I do wish anyone who does enter the best of luck, but know that your design talents are worth more than prizes, and know that larger bands, for the most part, make their millions of merch sales."

Now I'm not trying to stir up controversy... I run a graphic design firm in the Toronto area and I am physically upset that things like this keep on appearing on this site. The Barenaked Ladies will probably receive anywhere from 100-200 enteries for this, maybe more, and get their pick with most like no legal binding to having to pick one at all if they don't find what they are looking for.

I don't know about anyone else, but I like to get paid for the work I do. My design talent cannot be bought for a signed copy of a record and some gift certificates that were probably given to the band in sponsorship anyways. I'm sorry, but something like this completely warrants me going out and downloading their album off Limewire - If I like it I'll pay for it later.

"All entrants to the Contest acknowledge that the Barenaked Ladies will own all results and proceeds including copyright in and to the entrant's designs submitted hereunder. To the extent entrant owns same, entrant hereby assigns such rights to the Barenaked Ladies in perpetuity. Entrants waive any and all moral rights in and to the designs and the artwork created hereunder. Entrants acknowledge that Nettwerk Productions may commercially release or otherwise exploit the artwork design in any manner it deems fit, now or hereinafter invented, without territories limitations, and that entrant shall not be entitled to any payment of any kind as a result of such use or other exploitation. Entrants hereby agree to indemnify Nettwerk and Artist from any and all breaches of this section and any liability, costs or expenses associated therewithin."

Way to lose your rights...

The official launch date of Blindfive™ clothing. And it's slowly killing me - minute by minute - task by task. Just a heads up for anyone thinking of starting their own line... It's not easy.

Online store is just about complete
Catalogs are done
Distribution is underway
Sales are up : ]
Myspace Profile is effin' owned! www.myspace.com/blindfiveinc
Final production stuffs are being completed
Collateral materials are ordered
Hanging tags (Hand made one of a kind artist signed) are being completed right now...

And there is more, but I have a million and a half other things that I have to finish up that are not Blindfive™ related. Oh, and sorry kids, but the final designs are still a secret - not until September first will you get a chance to see anything... Of course, if you had been at Wakestock on Saturday you would have gotten a sneak peak at some things ; ]

Rock and Roll.

We'll be running photoshoots over the course of the weekend locally and most likely celebrating a little bit : ]
I have a new website. It would be awfully nice of some of you to have a look and let me know what you honestly think. I am aware that I need to add some preloaders in some places, and some of the features are still not active, but I need some overall opinions... Any input would be wunderbar!
I hate to see any team lose in penalty kicks, but you know, I am so happy that Germany won. When I was in Mexio last month I met a couple of new recruits from a pro team in Argentina and their ego's were phenominal. I'm sure it's the same for German's, but they are already so stereotypically unapproachable that it would be no big deal if I met them. But the Argentinians... I thought they'd be cool shit.

Probably didn't help that Ali and I kicked their asses in beach volleyball. Over, and over, and over, and over. In your face Argentina.

Canada Day Long Weekend

Ottawa tonight until Monday. Should be good times.

Unfortunately no one good is playing on Parliment Hill, so I think we'll end up making a mockery of ourselves then staggering downtown for some late night debauchery. Nothing says "I love my country" like a bas ass hangover and a fat lip from the night before... Wooooooo....
I hate, with a passion, those that freak when condensation hits the pavement. Drivers I mean. Those that become paranoid with fear when the ground is merely damp. I spent three hours on the highway this morning to get to a meeting that should have taken me 1.5 hours to get to (still effin' far enough for a meeting - but it was for Blindfive™, so it was worth it).

I was an hour late. Shize. I hate being late for anything, even by a few minutes.

The day got better from there. Plus, I couldn't wait to get back and edit images from last night... They'll be added over the next few days.

Out.

I decided "the hell with it" and have reclaimed by blindfive username from my clothing line. I've never seen a company move along so slowly in my life. I swear to god snail farmers have a faster paced work schedule. The problem is production, and the lack of will from supplier companies to take on new work. That problem is finally fixed, so we'll be into production by the end of the month. But I digress. This is not what I want my dear journal to be about.

Dear journal... hell. I hate writing journals, or "blogs" as they are affectionately known in certain circles. Blogs. Blah. I lie. I don't hate writing them if I have something to actually write about. Something entertaining. Something, ummm, something...

Welcome back me... Hurrah.
