Mulan: A digital painting with a beautiful colour scheme and a strong sense of drama. The detail in this piece is simply stunning, it's easy to see the time invested into it (50 hours!)
Deathly Hallows Courtyard: One of many wonderful pieces inspired by the Harry Potter series her gallery. I'm especially fond of her interpretation of Snape and the lighting in this one.
Metal Cross: =lilyhbp doesn't just paint, she also has a growing gallery devoted to her metal work. I'd love to own either of the pieces in this photo.

Hey My Sun-Eyed Girl: One of the first pieces that I ever saw by ~Tsubasa-Mine, and still a fave. The character design, the linework and the movement are fabulous. Plus the facial expression is a hoot.
Pooter Lurve: SO CUTE. Yet quirky. Heh, I am also digging the linework and the bright colours in this one.
Tsubasa JUMP: A very cool, nicely designed wallpaper featuring one of her characters. Excellent cell-shading, great detailing and an extremely cool pose.

Foxglove: The Pool's Closed: What would appear to be a betta-inspired mermaid. I am simply in love with the shimmering tail, the juicy colours and the wild hair.
Crux: Character Lineup A: A fabulously motley buncha characters, each one is a distinct individual with tons of personality to spare. I'm always in awe of artists with the patience to draw character lineups, especially with so much detail and consistency.
Crux: Problem Solving: Starring one of the above characters, the poses, the facial expressions and the punchline are still making me giggle on the tenth viewing.

Beauty in the Breakdown: A very interesting interpretation of a great song, the bright, limited colour palate and the concept are working quite well.
Hulk: A distinct take on an iconic character, the action pose is very nicely done, the muscles are awesome and I like the muted earthy colours. The war zone background is quite cool too.
Grandkids WIP: A lovely digital painting with a more realistic style and some nice texturing. I'm loving the colour scheme and I'm quite curious about the 'work in progress' status, this part alone is looking excellent already.

Sadly, I'm not entirely sure how much actual (artistic) updating there will be over the break. I've got a few pieces on the go but it remains to be seen if they'll ever get past the scribble stage. I seem to be experiencing a bit of artistic burnout in the wake of the previous semester. Heck, I think it had already set in prior to final projects. But thank goodness for breaks and large quantities of sleep.

At the very least I am hoping to catch up on all of my commenting before next year. In the meantime, best wishes to all ^_^

I know in the end it all comes down to practice. But I was wondering, where do you all find inspiration for your own colour schemes? Does anyone know of any tutorials on the subject? How do other artists create such amazing, rich and moreover unified coloured pieces?

Over the last few years at art college I've been struggling with colour theory. I know that my classmates have had similar struggles, but I do seem to have an unusual knee-jerk-reaction where I end up hucking complementary colours at each other none too subtlely. I even took an entire class on the colour wheel in first year and dangit, I still tend to gravitate towards inks and graphite >_O

EEP, I have so many storyboards to finish colouring by Monday morning, which is my main reason for being on this subject. It's looking to be a very, very late night *sighs*

Any input would be tremendously appreciated ^_^

It's been quite a while since the last update. School is back full throttle and despite only having three studios and a lunch hour humanities class I'm somewhat buried at the moment. I do have a couple of projects on the go, including a little bit of fanart, some new original characters and one or two assignments that need retouching. Hopefully I'll have some new uploads in the next little while.

In other news, I've jumped the Avatar: The Last Airbender bandwagon SO BADLY. 43 episodes in four days baby! I think I would've piled through 'em in a single day if hadn't been for school and random jaunts downtown to participate in protests and such. Best of all, I've caught on at the start of the third and final season. Meaning that the fandom is still extremely active, and it makes watching way more fun

I've seen a few random episodes of Avatar over the last few years and I had always admired the animation, but I really missed out on a great deal of character development, random insane humor and the fantabulousness that is Iroh. I'd highly recommend checking out the series and wandering through the gallery of *rufftoon, AKA she of the fabulous Avatar art.

I think I may have to lay low for a while since remaining spoiler free is significantly trickier than anticipated. It's also not helping that I'm intending to borrow the book from the library, which'll definitely put me slightly behind everyone else in reading it. Although my current status is 9th out of 1341 holds, with 200 copies coming in, so I'm pretty sure I'll have it once it's in

As long as she doesn't kill Neville or Luna I can probably deal with any ending. Sadly I am slightly less optimistic about Snape's future, but Rowling had better give that guy a satisfying conclusion.

Edit: I have read the book and I am now officially spoiler-proof! Overall conclusion: slightly uneven, sometimes frustrating, but amazingly satisfying when it came to wrapping certain plotlines. I figured I should warn though that my favorites are currently absolutely infested with Death Hallows spoilers, so do beware.

I also got to see the White Stripes at the Dome on Friday! The decision to get the tickets was completely spontaneous and last second, but totally worth it. The show was loud, and blinding, and fan-freaking-tastic in a happily disorienting way. I rather much felt like a deer caught in the headlights after they had finished blasting through Seven Nation Army as the closer, complete with amazing seizure lights.

My interest in the show definitely cranked up about tenfold when I found out that they were visiting EVERY province and territory in Canada, including the Northern areas. The White Stripes actually played in Nunavut, which completely establishes them as being made of awesome in my mind.

Which brings me to the topic of Canada Day. Try sharing your birthday with a COUNTRY. I could get jealous of Canada, it being a total attention hog

But at least I always have a stat holiday and fireworks, and perhaps it also adds to my overall patriotism? In honor of being old(er), a meme that I nabbed from elsewhere a while back..

The local weather basically goes like this-

In other news, saw the Heroes finale, was slightly underwhelmed and there was some rantage afterwards but I still have high hopes for the next season. Especially after seeing the bit with Hiro at the end. The Lost finale on the other hand was completely puzzling, even with the advanced spoilers I'm still trying to work out what was going on O_o

I'm also currently driving myself absolutely batty with a piece of Heroes fanart, it's a digital portrait and I'm hoping it'll turn out something like Davy Jones in terms of detail and realism. The only problem is nailing the resemblance, it keeps coming and going with each additional layer. With Davy it was so much easier to make him recognizable since tentacle beards aren't terribly common. Moral of the story; humans are a heckuva lot harder to draw than octopus-squid-crab-men >_>

Third year is now complete, I can't quite decide whether to be happy or incredibly aprehensive. All I know is next year has to count! Unfortunately I seem to be going through a bit of an artistic quarter-life crisis at this point. My colour theory and figure drawing skills have seriously been letting me down this semester, ironically environments are one of the few things I still seem to enjoy drawing.

I'm just hoping that I can settle down and do some serious sketching this summer, in addition to dabbling in traditional mediums and attempting to relearn basic colour theory. Not sure how much I'll be uploading in the meantime, but at least I can catch up on my commenting ^^ Hmm, I should probably also be working out a portfolio website and business cards and having a go at Flash this summer..

So much to do and so little time!

-Annoying mandatory scanning and digital archiving of all my work. Check.
-Sleep being classified as entirely optional. Check >_<
-Overwhelming urge to assume the fetal position under a desk. CHECK.

Something has got to give and I'm afraid it may have to be DA and all of my more procrastinatory internet surfing. At the worst it may be a month before I pop in again. In the meantime, I'm wishing the best of luck to anyone who may be in a similar position. I'll hopefully see you all once things have settled down. Please let that be soon O_O

1) I have a complete inability to sit normally at a desk (especially at home). I'm prone to hooking my legs in odd positions and/or squatting on the chair on my tippy toes for prolonged periods of time.

2) Horror movie TRAILERS make me sleep with the lights on. I would probably need sedatives if I actually saw an entire scary movie, especially of the psychological creepy ghost sort O_O

3) Uh..I can walk on stilts? When I was a kid I used to own an old set that were about three feet off the ground and I could run around on 'em pretty good.

4) I can hold my breath for two minutes and I once swam nearly two lengths of a 25 meter pool underwater without coming up for air (on a stupid dare) [/bragging]

6) Even though I love swimming, deep dark water freaks the heck out of me. Almost to a phobic degree. It's not the drowning I'm afraid of so much as large sea creatures, sea weed, octopi, lake ghosts, Krakens and Jaws O_o

Whoo, I am heading into a massive time crunch. I'm actually quite panicked at the moment. So much for reading week being a break, the next four days are looking absolutely frantic when it comes to meeting my personal deadlines. I really want to get more or less caught up on the homework before school returns full throttle, otherwise I am seriously concerned about the rest of the semester (and my sanity)

And I just HAD to choose oils for my painting project, but at least I knew what I was getting myself into this time. Not that it stopped me or anything *headdesk*

On the bright side I managed to get some peace and quiet and regrouping time during the break. And I totally drug Sesroh to a concert ^^ Jars of Clay played one of the local halls and they put on a pretty nifty show with psychedelic lights, a spastic singer and completely eclectic opening acts. But I still can't quite wrap my head around sitting at concerts, which many people were unfortunately doing. I can hardly dance to save my life but it doesn't stop me from at least clapping, headbanging and/or swaying strangely. I believe Great Big Sea and Folk Fest have spoiled me with crazy dancing crowds as I now seem to be addicted to audience participation.

Well, the latest trailer for the upcoming Spiderman 3 has left a number of obsessive comic fans sharpening the ole’ pitchforks. For some random reason it would seem that it’s now been decided that Sandman killed Uncle Ben, instead of that petty thief that Peter failed to stop in the first movie.

WHAT THE HECK?!? Hooboy. I just keep trying to repeat the following: in Raimi I trust. He wouldn’t mess with the Spiderman mythos and defining moments that severely, would he?

I think that he did a pretty nifty job on the first two films and Spiderman 2 is still one of my favorite movies. I’m steadfastly clinging to the notion that it’s all a big fake out. Either a) it’s a hallucination brought on my the symbiote b) the police are mistaken or c) Harry is trying to mess with Peter, although I’m not entirely sure how the misinformation really applies in the last instance.

The crux of the symbiote saga has always been Spiderman turning to the dark side and eventually hitting the breaking point where he becomes horrified by his own actions. I believe that going on a vengeance quest against Sandman could qualify Spiderman for darkside-status and I could totally picture Peter being shocked to discover that he just took out an ‘innocent’ man (well, at least innocent in the case of Uncle Ben’s murder).

Plus Sandman’s pretty disposable compared to the more notable Spidey villains and I could swear that the early posters depicted Sandman shielding a child from the cops. If Sandman turns out to be a father, it casts him as a more sympathetic character and it would completely freak Peter out to discover that he tried to kill a little kid’s ‘daddy’.

Hehehe. And then there’s Venom. The fangy one doesn’t quite compensate for the lack of the Ock but I’m pretty sure he’ll still kick arse. Also, Otto so isn’t dead. He might not show up in the films but no body = NOT DEAD YET. Dude, we’re talking about comic book villains. They don’t die. EVER

Anyways, please excuse my geekish ramblings. Although I would love to hear other people’s theories about the switcheroo with Uncle Ben’s killer.

PS. YEE! I’m 10th out of 400 people on the library catalogue for holds on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. DUDE. I AM TEH UBER GEEK!!1! *cough* But not quite as geeky as the person in first place *shakes her fist at the keener*

I'm still mind-numbingly busy with school and work but it's seeming almost manageable this semester. Also, I found the most amazing 6 x 4 inch hardcover sketchbook on sale for four bucks at the art supply store down the hill. It totally reminds me of the cheapo pads that I used to carry everywhere as a teen and I've got big plans for that little book. I've already filled a few pages and it's working so much better than the big expensive books that tend to creatively cripple me. I seem to have issues with drawing on good paper, there's always the feeling that dangit every drawing on this paper must be amazing or I'm wasting my money! I swear, my Grandmother has irreversibly warped me for life when it comes to spending money

I'm down to three studio classes and two half day humanities-type courses this semester. Hypothetically it's a lighter workload than the last two semesters but it's always so tricky to predict. The snow seems to be here to stay and Christmas is starting to loom. I still can't quite get my head around the idea of shopping for gifts in November or heaven forbid, October. I'll probably end up taking the 'artwork as a gift' route at this rate.

Yup. Er, that's about it. Still very fixated on The Who and not drawing terribly much outside of class stuff. AND WHAT WERE THE WRITERS FOR LOST THINKING!? I liked that character >_<

My seat was a wee bit on the nosebleedish side and binoculars were certainly helpful, but the sound was still wonderfully eardrum shattering and the concert atmosphere was great. Ooh, and the opening act didn't suck. They were a punk-leaning rock trio that spent the entire time emulating The Who by jumping all over the place and throwing things, they certainly had energy to spare.

Hehe, evidently Pete associates Calgary with the smell of horse dung, they last played the Stampede back in '68 and the stage was built in a slightly less than clean corral. I also thought it was nice how the guys seemed genuinely grateful and slightly mystified to be playing a sold out show nearly 40 years after thier last trip to Calgary. A number of the new songs were actually quite catchy and I thought Roger's voice held up really well. Then again, I was just impressed to be hearing him belting it out in key over the wall of sound that was the band. Pete's guitar playing made me absolutely hysterically giddy and there was a great deal of windmilling with intervals of microphone swinging. Behind Blue Eyes, the Tommy medley and Won't Get Fooled again were the definite highlights for me, I think I was seeing spots for a good ten minutes after the latter due to the light show *_*

Overall, it was AMAZING and I think my Who-fixation might be even more obsessive than before (hehe, be very afraid). I can only hope that I'll be as spry as Pete and Roger when I hit sixty

Thank you so incredibly much to everyone that commented on and/or favorited my Davy Jones portrait! It's nice to know that all of the work was worthwhile and I'm still absolutely astounded by the way that it rocketed past all of my prior pieces in terms of pageviews. I'd love to thank you all individually but I'm kinda leaving town first thing tomorrow morning and as usual I've procrastinated until the last second on the packing front *sigh*

It'll probably be a little dead around here for a week but hopefully I'll have some more art to upload once I get home next weekend *plots*
