Sooo... who on devART is going to be attending FITC in Toronto this month???
[link]

My design & systems prof told us about it... The conference is called "Flash in the Can", its basically 3 days of conferences about new media, interactivity design, flash, game design, etc, taking place in Toronto. Apparently the after parties are really awesome, too! It is going to be good times. The conferences are at the Hilton, and the parties are at various bars downtown.

I'm working there as a volunteer, since student prices even are $400. However, I can attend events while not scheduled to work! Woohoo! I am so excited!

Oh, and those who aren't going to FITC, but are in Toronto and interested in getting a job relating to new media, this event is free: [link]

I've been working on a group project for a class called Design & Information Architecture. We are designing an system to help people find locally grown & organic foods in the Toronto area. Also it can assess your diet to recommend places to eat/shop and how to eat healthier. You can also use it to find recipes that feature locally grown products. Right now we've just been working on designing the system, getting process documents done, but here's our stuff so far:

[link]

I worked with a group member on the systems map yesterday, and maaan, a lot of work but it is a very useful document. I can see how I can use these methods to start designing games and such in flash or w/e. I find I am actually very good at thinking in this kind of logical way. Maybe I could do something like this for my career in the future?

Next will be our "representation" phase, when we actually design what this thing looks like. Ah it will be fun! I need to improve my "sleek/stylish" design skills, as opposed to just being arty all the time.

Hey all,

Just a small update...
First of all, I am very busy with school lately. Aaaughh. I have some really fun projects that I am working on, however, they're leaving me with little free time. Though, I do have some free time...

I started taking life drawing courses on friday, it is pretty awesome. Last week we had a sexy asian model... Who will we have this week? I've gotten a lot more experience drawing males, which is good. Also, I've been working on.... pixel art! I'll be honest, it's more like therapy than anything else. Just to sit there, and perfect it pixel by pixel to make it something so small and lovely, it's really soothing! I am working on a new (and improved) sushi set, a chocolate set, more fruits, and in the future a coffee/bakery goods set. So, expect to see both life drawing works and pixel works in the near future....

As for whether or not I'll be going back to Gaia, I haven't a clue. The shop was always tough because if I didn't send out orders daily, they'd build up so fast and it would take me hours to send them all out... so I would always put it off. I DO still browse Gaia and miss the gold income... but it's way too time consuming. Anyway, but it's not forgotten yet... I'll try and come up with something...

Ah! Sooo I went to the Sheridan art store to pick up some new pens/markers because the ones I had basically were dead. And yeah... I have been getting back into drawing lately, so when I went to look at the copics I was like o___o! Ah but I dunno what kind to get. ^o^ I got a black copic brush pen for doing stuff like expressive lettering and concept sketches (soooo sexy!). And yeah... I was gonna get some colours too, but I want to think about it first! For general colouring... do I get the square shaped ones? (I only saw square ones and the oval ones... the brush pens). Does anyone who uses copic recommend specific tones for skin colours??? Ahh I dunno what to get. >_< So yeah advice = good!

Take a screen cap and we'll see. Closest one will probably end up getting some pixel art or some kind of design thing...

Those wondering about my Gaia shop: Unfortunately I don't know when I'm coming back, to be honest I am too busy with school (sending orders takes about 1-2 hours a day). My program is pretty heavy... I have to come up with some creative concepts and finish a 1000 word essay tonight. >_< Plus some type assignments... I am thinking about hiring someone to run the shop for me... they'd take/send orders and receive a certain percentage of the profit. This is probably what I'll do once I get around to organizing it...

Wow, I've gotta say I'm in disbelief. o_O; I just received an acceptance letter from OCAD (Ontario College of Art & Design). ^__^ Squeee! I'm afraid that if I get too excited, tomorrow they'll send me a letter saying it was a mistake. xD So far that's 2/3 places I've been accepted to... I was afraid I wouldn't get accepted anywhere but the local university. @_@

But, ok, let's say I don't get accepted to York (the third place, where I most wanna go). Would I stay here and study at the local university, or go to OCAD? On the plus... the local university is cheaper, i'll for sure get a 5,000-10,000$ scholarship, and I could live at home(wait, is that really a good thing?). However, the program that I applied for (fine arts), isn't quite what I want and probably wouldn't allow me to find a job I enjoy (or one at all xP). I know I don't want to be a gallery artist... They use mostly traditional media, stuff I've already seen and worked with. I'm also afraid the program won't challenge me. Plus, if I stay here for maybe the first year, would I be able to transfer to a different school?

OCAD, on the plus side, is obviously a fantastic school to study arts. One of the top places in Canada. The program (graphic design), is something I really think I'd like and that could give me training for a job I might actually enjoy. But, let's say I don't like graphic design. I can still take classes in animation or in illustration or w/e and maybe switch major after a year or so if I find that this is what I prefer. Unfortuantely, OCAD is in Toronto and a lot more expensive (can i afford it?). Obviously I'd need a job this summer, if not earlier. Not only that, but they don't offer residence... I'd need to find an apartment or live in a student house in downtown Toronto. Living expenses are high there too. I know my dad doesn't want me to move there, that's for sure. xP Hmm, I don't know... I think I need to get my shit together... I really would love to study at OCAD.
